computer down - want to get help

Hi all I know this is for Centos. but you may help me I am running the fedora7 (PAE kernel, disable selinux) as router. it has been up 28 days. Yesterday the computer was no response suddenly I saw the login prompt in the console but the keyboard didn't have any response. After rebooting, I check logs and (I have own logs - ps , top, dmesg every mintues). the computer was ok before freezing. No kernel panic also Do you have any ideas to cause this problem? eg; overhead, memory leakage, and so on.... Do you have any suggestion? mysql 5.1 rpm spec file?

Does Red Hat make available spec files for future releases? I took the existing mysql 5.0 spec file and, with a few mods here and there, was able to build the 5.1 rpm. But there are some new things which I am curious how they will deal with (ndb stuff, primarily), and was wondering if they have available the "beta" SRPMs or spec files for future versions of software. johnn

Going back to old kernels?

As the latest 4.5 kernel (2.6.9-55.0.12.EL) is unstable for me (crashes about once a day) I want to go back to the rock solid kernel that I had before the update (2.6.9-34.0.2.EL). If nothing else then to confirm it's not a kernel problem. Are there any current packages that might not work with this older kernel? As kernels don't get updated but installed the old kernel is still there and I would just need to change the grub.conf. Anything else? As this is a remote machine I would at least need to be able to login via ssh if not everything is ok. Thanks. Kai -- Kai Schätzl, Berlin, Germany

Vmware Server on Centos 5.1

Hi all, I am running some Centos 5.0 x86_64 servers as host os for vmware server 1.0.3 on both Opteron and Xeon systems. They are all running fine and stable. But now I am in doubt to upgrade to 5.1. Yum update wants to overwrite newer app package

This is probably a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway (I do that - you all know... :-). Due to a bug I found in OOo 2.0, I moved to using OOo 2.3, back when I was still running CentOS 5.0. Now that I have upgraded to 5.1, yum wants to update my OOo from 2.3 BACK to 2.0. Is it possible to get yum to recognize that 2.3 is newer than 2.0, or should I just exclude OOo from the updates? Dear All, I am still new to iptables and need some clarification and My Current Setup is CentOS 4.4 I need to implement some sort of transparent proxy server for the rsync protocol. (In case you don't know: rsync uses tcp and the standard port 873). I want to port forward the rsync client request to server2 from server1 and Details are given below 1. I am Execute the rsync command from client to server1 (192.168.13.165:8888 i.e with dummy port number ) 2. In Server1 192.168.13.165 will redirect the rsync request from client to sever2 (192.168.13.205 with default port number) 3. captive portal

Hello, Forgive the cross-posting, but googling showed results from these two lists. I'm looking to set up a WiFi gateway with two nics, and iptables. The catch is i have to use a captive portal as well to ensure all traffic goes to a single destination. I've read about several packages, but haven't seen any docs that say how to integrate everything. If anyone has this setup i'd appreciate knowing what software your using, and experiences with it, positive or negative. Thanks. Dave.

Strange GUI/GNOME Lockups

First, a hello to all! I recently moved to CentOS from Fedora on my primary desktop due to a desire to have a highly reliable stable desktop that would be supported long term without constant upgrades. I'll keep my laptop Fedora to see what's new, but I wanted CentOS to be my ultimate "stable" workstation. However, since installing CentOS 5.1 I have been plagued by a strange problem I haven't seen in ANY other distro I've ran on this PC, including a RHEL 5 30 Day Demo that prompted me to install CentOS in the first place. My GUI (GNOME desktop BTW) will randomly have strange little lockups or freezes where I can't interact with any windows or use any menus or applets. SOMETIMES I can ctrl+alt+arrow to another workspace to free it up, but just now I had to ctrl+alt+backspace to free it up. There is nothing strange in /var/log or the system logs. It just simply freezes. I'm hoping that someone would have some kind of suggestion, or even where to start looking for a solution, as I REALLY want CentOS to be my FT OS on this machine. SCSI controller suggestions for a 5.x server?

We are preparing for a new file server (Dell 2970) with an external disk array with integrated RAID (raidking.com) The array presents via Ultra 320 SCSI. We are looking for anyone that has had experience or opinions on SCSI cards without RAID that have a good performance working under CentOS 5.x. Any suggestions/comments on the controllers with large storage especially at or above 2tb would be appreciated. Any help would be appretiated and any additional information that is needed please ask. phpmyadmin issue- what's really working at this time?

Basic phpmyadmin issue, but I can't seem to solve it. Qube3 with CentOS 4.5, PHP4.3.9, BlueQuartz. phpmyadmin was working a while but after long disuse, the index.php now just displays as text. DirectoryIndex in httpd.conf at /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf /etc/admserv/conf/httpd.conf has index.php added. /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf if I uncomment the AddType to bring in *.php, the phpmyadmin startup breaks but clicking on the direct link to config.inc.php gives a blank screen (so I guess loads fine). /etc/admserv/conf.d/php.conf already had the Addtype uncommented but it doesn't seem to be used(?) If I put 2.8.* phpmyadmin in per the BQ wiki (and config it minimally as the example), apache fails to load, same for 2.10. Should this be fine with the 2.7? I didn't touch it :), it seems to have broken as part of regular yum updates-- perhaps the php update in Sept? (I haven't used phpmyadmin for a long time). What is supposed to be working at this time with our aging base? I'll then put that on and then troubleshoot from there. Thanks- Brian

Thanks Karanbir! It seems you have taken on the task of reducing this volume. Frankly, at 200 or so messages per day it is simply too much and I don't have time to even read the headers. So much is not directly related to CentOS but yet the 'list' has in the past been so good at troubleshooting almost everything. My problem is the items important to me, I deal with my own hardware issues, I don't post to this list with regards to issues with other software, although I have in the past made recommendations... troubleshooting those however doesn't really belong here. Meanwhile, I hope I'm not missing the obvious, the basic issues with running CentOS based packages. I have suggested before that maybe alternative lists would be a good idea. I think a xen list does exist? For sure a CentOS/Hardware list could be of benefit... not really a CentOS item, but best placed in front of those running CentOS. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud here and adding to what I'm trying to avoid, yet another CentOS thread on an already overloaded IMO list. John Hinton

I have an annoying little issue that perhaps someone can explain to me. I installed zenoss (very cool, http://www.zenoss.org) and things are OK. when I use emacs or when somethings like a cron job execute, I get notice of an error... emacs: /opt/zenoss/lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by emacs) or /usr/bin/webalizer: /opt/zenoss/lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libgd.so.2) doing my google bit, I seem to find that this isn't a necessarily a zenoss problem but rather a problem caused by all sorts of software that install a version of the libpng12.so is there some method of fixing this using ld ? Samba problems on 5.1

Hi list, Since I've upgraded from Version 5.0 to 5.1 i have strange problems with samba. Since 5.1 the connection from a XP client to the samba server disconnect often, especially then i write a file to the share after some idle time. Some informations of my config. I've noticed quite a few of these India consulting companies using the mailing lists to supplement their lack of internal skilled personnel. It really gives me pause when/if I need to consider outsourcing technology work. Clustering MySQL

I'm just beginning to consider using the Clustering available with CentOS. We are going to spec out some new hardware, and after reading most of the Clustering manuals, I have a small question about MySQL. I would like to run High Availability MySQL, in other words, similar to how you can run HA HTTPD and the like. The catch seems to be if I run MySQL on an individual server, with common MySQL replication to another server, how do failovers work? I see a real problem with table locking and the like. Is there a way to run multiple MySQL servers that get removed from the cluster as opposed to failing over when using the newer MySQL versions (I am running 3.23 now, so a little behind)? We now have the new firewall & router installed in our office, that supports a secure VPN connection. We need to enter your Peer IP and your Private IP in our device. They indicated xxxx.xxxx.xxxx/24 as format for the Private IP. The settings you need to know at our end are the following (remote site info is given below) Peer IP: 194.237.227.202 Server IP: 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.255 Pre-shared key: d769hdsKJ Ike, Phase1: 3des, sha, dh2 Ipsec, Phase2: 3des, sha Now, Could you pls let me know the suitable VPN pkg for the above configurations. Can I use Open VPN? What about Open Swan or Free Swan ? I prefer to install RPMs. Where can I find RPMs for the right pkg? I googled and found some info. [Re-sending ...] I would like to ask why upstream and CentOS provide no compat-openssl packages like Novell does in SUSE. We are trying to install binaries for gLite (a huge toolkit for grid computing linked against upstream v4 libraries) on CentOS 5. I was under the impression that this would be possible because v5 is "binary-compatible" with v4. But it seems this "binary compatibility" doesn't extend to OpenSSL. What, then, is the scope of the upstream and CentOS binary compatibility guarantees? (OpenSSL is not yet in the LSB; is this significant?) We will probably want to roll our own compat-openssl packages to provide the relevant libssl and libcrypto .so files, using e.g. compat-openldap as an example. Is this something we could contribute? It doesn't seem to exist yet in any repositories linked from http://wiki.centos.org/HowToContribute/Packages. Assuming it makes sense to contribute this, we'd want to do it right. Could anyone outline steps to make the packages secure and compatible? For example, is it sufficient to roll up the .so files from the CentOS 4.xopenssl packages into rpms and add Requires tags for .so files from compat-glibc? Thanks in advance for any help! -- Ed

I'm running up-to-date CentOS 5 w/ Xen. I'm getting tons (tons = 13787 just yesterday, presumably because I have a monitoring system poll every 5 minutes) of log entries of the following: netsnmp_assert index == tmp failed if-mib/data_access/interface.c:467 _access_interface_entry_save_name() and netsnmp_assert rc == 0 failed if-mib/ifTable/ifTable_data_access.c:209 _check_interface_entry_for_updates() When I do an SNMPWalk, everything looks ok (now that IPv6 is back on) on the host doing the walking, but on the other side it is spewing the above messages. I have not been able to find out anything about these. I had IPv6 turned off (by the "alias net-pf-10 off" method), but in troubleshooting these messages I turned it back on (because there were other snmpd messages complaining about unable to find ipv6 entries). vsifax on Centos 5.1

All.... I am trying to install vsifax on a 64 bit Centos 5.1 system. The Esker staff have been helpful but no cigar. At first they thought the problem might be related to a 64 bit machine so I tried to install vsifax on a 32 bit Centos 5.1 machine and received the same error. One of their installation scripts is trying to execute a binary called eula which fails. ./eula: cannot execute binary file The tech support of vsifax advised me they had one other customer use Centos 4.5 and succeeded in a vsifax installation. I was hoping whoever had the other vsifax installation might be listening to this list and could give me a hand. Thanks much!!! Greg Ennis

[OT] Connecting to a Windows server via NFS

Hello, I realize this may be off-topic for this mailing-list, but at this point I am not sure where the problem is continue troubleshooting. We have a server that has Windows Unified Data Storage Server that is supposed the be able to provide NFS shares. I have attempted to setup a NFS share and I think I have it setup correctly on the server. I have the User Mappings created on the Windows server and share setup. When I mount the share from my CentOS server, I get this: # mount -o rw storage:/share /srv/nfs # ls -l total 1 drwx------ 2 4294967294 4294967294 64 Dec 11 14:46 nfs # ls -l nfs ls: nfs: Permission denied My guess would be permissions on the Windows server, but the test it, I have setup "Everyone" to have full control of the share while I test it. Custom Installer Kernel

Hi All, I'm trying to remaster the boot.iso image with a custom kernel as the nForce based boards I have are not supported by the stock CentOS 5.0 installer, but they are supported by newer kernels. I need this so I can do kickstarted network installs. Is there a howto available for how to go about this? Hello, Today i ran a yum update and installed kernel 2.6.18.53.1 from centosplus. I then rebooted to ensure i was running it. I was and went to remove the previous kernel and kernel-devel packages v2.6.18.53 also from centosplus. In both cases yum gets to the running transaction check then hangs, i don't get any errors it just sits there. I have to manually kill the yum process to resolve this. This does not happen with any other package add/removals. Any suggestions? Thanks. Dave.

Kickstart + CentOS 5 = doesn't prompt for network information?

This may be more appropriate for an upstream list. That said... I'm doing kickstart setups of CentOS 5. My kickstart config includes a network configuration item. Depending on options passed at boot-time, the network config item may or may not include a --hostname option, but always specifies eth0. When I do a kickstart install, I notice that even though I am using 'interactive' (basically so the user can override any of the kickstart settings should they need to), the networking screen never pops up and the values from my network get used. If the usr didn't provide a hostname entry on bootup, then localhost.localdomain gets used as the system hostname. I'd like for the user to be able to select the hostname via the installation wizard as they would normally in a non-kickstart install. Perhaps for CentOS 5 kickstarts I should just not include the network option at all in order to make the network configuration screen accessible inside the installer? Ray

I am running a server inside of VMWare, and the clock gains ~30 seconds every 1000 seconds or 1.03X. I have a local repo of CentOS 5.0, base and updates, I can't use rsync , so I do it manually, I mean I got the packeages from /var/cache/yum and copied to where the repo is and do createrepo, meanwhile I only have CentOS 5.0 everything was fine, but now I don't know how to create de 5.1 and keep the 5.0 I need some help thanks to all manny -- "Nuestra recompensa se encuentra en el esfuerzo y no en el resultado. Problem with driver disk on amd64

Hi, I have a really strange problem with a driver disk (http://wiki.centos.org/HardwareList/RealTekRTL8111b) on amd64. I'm remotly booting the system via isolinux-files, so I unfortunatly do not have access to relevant logs, all I can see the the primary console/screen. With i386, the driver disk works just fine and I can install via http. But with amd64, the installer complains no driver for the hardware could be found, which again keeps me from installing the system. Due to the lack of RTL8111 hardware, I cannot debug this locally either. Does anybody have an idea what might be wrong? Thanks. -- Fridtjof Busse

How to disable hal's polling of CD-ROM drive in CentOS 5.1?

Given that I hardly ever use the CD-ROM drive, it makes no sense to have hal constantly polling it for new media. How can I disable this polling in CentOS 5.1? Thanks.

module mppe with pptpd causes kernel crash

Hi, configuration of PPTP for windows clients , using MPPE causes kernel crash. It is a known bug which is in bugzilla on RedHat https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=248716 I was thinking that CentOS 5.1 has allready a kernel patched , but as it seems NOT. Or am i wrong? Thanks David Hlacik

5.0--> 5.1 lm_sensors "General Parse Error"

Problem and solution, not sure if correct After upgrading to 5.1 and restarting, lm_sensors complained "General Parse Error." Google pointed here: http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Devices Where I found this under "SENSOR CHIP DRIVERS - STATUS" AMD --> "Since Kernel 2.6.19" Latest AMD K8 processors have integrated sensors which can be read directly without any additional monitoring chip. Driver contributed by Rudolf Marek. Userspace support available in lm_sensors 2.10.1. Upgrade to lm_sensors 2.10.1 is mandatory, earlier versions of libsensors will fail with a "General parse error" message. My kernel is "2.6.18-53.el5.centos.plus-i686", but I figured I must of gotten me some backported stuff in there (i.e. I'm in over my head). I upgraded to the lm_sensors in ATRPMS testing repo, and the problem went away. (lm_sensors-2.10.5-52.el5) -- Sincerely, John Thomas

Problems configuring SAMBA share on remote machine

I'm having problems getting a SAMBA share on a remote (Windows XP) machine to allow me write access to files. I can copy/paste whole files OK from my CentOS 5 box, but can't do any editing of files on the Windows XP machine, which I use as a file server for most of my domestic data (historical reasons for using Windows!). I've tried re-setting permissions to allow write access to the cifs-mounted folders/files, but without success - any suggestions please? Thanks, Andy

Newer gamin package for CentOS 4.x?

The gam_server in gamin-0.1.7-1.2.EL4 occasionally goes into an infinite loop (googling indicates there have been problems with this in gam_server for a long time, I see "another attempt to fix ..." dating from 2004). Does anyone know whether a newer version of gamin has finally fixed this and if so where an RPM or SRPM for the fixed version, suitable for CentOS 4, might be found?

CentOS 5 sysreport

I stumbled across this issue because I requested to install the sysreport package in my kickstart file. Anaconda complains that such a package doesn't exist. There is a bug report about this already (http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2492) but it's certainly a strange situation. 1. Anaconda doesn't think the package sysreport exists 2. yum thinks it exists: # yum list sysreport Loading "installonlyn" plugin Setting up repositories Reading repository metadata in from local files Available Packages sysreport.noarch 1.4.3-13.el5 base 3. But installing with yum fails: # yum install sysreport Loading "installonlyn" plugin Setting up Install Process Setting up repositories Reading repository metadata in from local files Parsing package install arguments Package sos - 1.7-9.1.el5.noarch already installed and latest version Nothing to do 4. The sysreport file from the sos package fails to run: # sysreport Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/sbin/sysreport", line 31, in ? import sos.policyredhat ImportError: No module named sos.policyredhat 5. But if you extract /usr/sbin/sysreport from the sysreport package using rpm2cpio for instance, it works just fine. So it would be nice if yum would allow installing the sysreport package (see step 3 above) as that would appear to solve all the problems. Alfred

Howdy folks - I just moved my laptop from Fedora to CentOS. FC6 was running rather sweet, then they decided to EOL it, and F8 - while it had some nice new features, it was just way to quirky for me. I no longer enjoy re-installing the OS quite so often, hence my move to CentOS. So I installed CentOS 5 on my laptop, and built a bunch of packages, making "yet another" repo for CentOS. These are primarily straight rebuilds (in mock) of Fedora 8 source rpm's - taking care to avoid anything that conflicts with or replaces CentOS packages. I know there are a dozen or so addon repos already - and if you are happy with them, stick with them. My goal was to stay as close to Fedora 8 packaging for these addon packages as possible, benefiting from their packaging guidelines, and also to not replace the stable very well tested CentOS packages. [yjl-misc] does not replace any CentOS packages and has stuff from F8 everything like AbiWord, Gnumeric, Bluefish, BitTorrent, etc. as well as some multimedia related libraries. [yjl-livna] has rebuilds of stuff from rpm.livna.org - mostly multimedia related, including xine and totem-xine. Depends on [yjl-misc]. [yjl-php] has php 5.2.5 and does replace the CentOS php, it should probably only be used if something you are doing requires php 5.2.x.
