touchpad problem

Hi all! I have a new-to-me (i.e., used) laptop and am having a problem making the touchpad behave. It is an old HP Elitebook 8530p, and I THINK it has a synaptics touchpad. But I don't remember how to get more specifics than that on Linux, lspci, lsusb and lshw don't tell me anything helpful. lsmod doesn't list anything containing "syn" or "synaptics". Anyway, I've installed C7 on the laptop and pretty much everything works just as I expect it to, but even though I configure the touchpad for two-finger-scrolling, it simply won't do it. It also won't do edge-scrolling, and it has a mark along the right side of the pad that seemingly implies it should do edge-scrolling. If I could figure out which synaptics touchpad it is I might be able to find out if it does or does not support two-finger scrolling (like both my netbooks do). Can any of you remind me how to find out the Synaptics model it is, and/or figure out if it would be expected (or not) to support two- finger scrolling? Any advice will be appreciated, thanks in advance! sssd ldap_user_search_base filters with '#' characters in names

I'm trying to craft an ldap search filter for use with ldap_user_search_base in sssd.conf which is using Actice Directory (AD) as the back end on CentOS 7 clients The filter looks for users that are memberOf a particular group - however, the group name start with a '#' character - i.e. in AD, the group name is listed as something like '#ABC XYZ' But when I set ldap_user_search_base to something like: ldap_user_search_base = OU=Users,DC=Example,DC=com?subtree?(memberOf=CN=#ABC XYZ,OU=Groups,DC=Example,DC=com) then 'getent passwd user' fails to return anything (for 'user' that is in that group) However, when using the above syntax with a group name that doesn't start with a '#' character, then things work as expected When I use ldapsearch, it reports that the user is a memberOf: memberOf: CN=\#ABC XYZ,OU=Groups,DC=Example,DC=com But using the '\' in sssd.conf for the search filter cause sssd to error with 'Invalid search filter' in the logs Escaping the Escape ('\\') also gives 'Invalid search filter' Does anyone know how to 'escape' special characters in search filters in sssd.conf ? Continuous Release (CR) Repository has been released for CentOS Linux 7.6.1810 for X86_64, i386, armhfp, aarch64, power9, ppc64le

We have pushed the CR repository for CentOS Linux 7.6.1810 for following architectures: x86_64 i386 armhfp aarch64 power9 ppc64le We are currently still working on the ppc64 / ppc architecture as we are having issues with some of the 32bit ppc mulitlib builds. CR is basically the packages that will update your install from CentOS Linux 7.5.1804 to 7.6.1810, minus the centos-release rpm and the anaconda rpms. What we will do now is take these packages and create the new install tree and install media, then test those and finally release them as the official CentOS 7.6.1810 release. This process typically takes about 2 weeks from the CR release .. at which time CentOS Linux 7.6.1810 becomes the default release. CONFIG_RTC_SYSTOHC not set for CentOS kernels

Hi folks, RHEL 7 documentation says that if either ntp or chrony is running on a system, then it will enable the kernel feature to sync system time to the hardware clock every 11 minutes. This needs the CONFIG_RTC_SYSTOHC option to be set. However, it looks like this option is not set for CentOS kernels: # fgrep CONFIG_RTC_SYSTOHC /boot/config-3.10.0-862.14.4.el7.x86_64 # CONFIG_RTC_SYSTOHC is not set This explains why on some of our servers, the hardware clock is out of sync with the system time. Does anyone know why this option is not enabled for CentOS kernels? Regards, Anand

'date' format differences between CentOS 6 and 7 using the en_GB locale ?

Just noticed that the output of 'date' is different between CentOS 6 and 7 when using the 'en_GB' locale - e.g.: CentOS 6: % LANG=en_GB date Thu Nov 15 11:42:46 GMT 2018 % LANG=en_US date Thu Nov 15 11:42:56 GMT 2018 CentOS 7: % LANG=en_GB date Thu 15 Nov 11:43:07 GMT 2018 % LANG=en_US date Thu Nov 15 11:43:11 GMT 2018 i.e. with LANG=en_GB on CentOS 7, the day and month are swapped when compared with CentOS 6 Any one know why the en_GB locale has changed between CentOS 6 and 7 ? Firefox Video Capability

One of our summer interns has stayed on during the school year to work some weekends on special projects. This past weekend, her assignment was to trouble shoot problems with Firefox when trying to view various on-line training videos. At some web sites, the video associated with the page will not play and we get the messages shown below. The Download statement is actually a link and was used to download this rpm file: adobe-release-x86_64-1.0-1.noarch.rpm. "Cannot Play Video" "The latest version of Adobe Flash is required to play this video." "Download the free Flash player here." The intern did not install this rpm because doing so outside of yum did not seem like a good idea. We also do not really know how the Adobe Flash utility is called up by Firefox and whether or not the installation would solve the problem or possibly cause other problems. This problem is not happening on our Windows 7 machines, but not everyone here has a Microsoft machine to use. On Windows, the Firefox occasionally updates itself when launched so that might explain the difference. The training videos always do play on Windows 7 systems when the web pages are brought up. We also noticed that on Windows 7 there are no Firefox related processes remaining after closing all Firefox browsers. This is not the case on our CentOS 6 systems as indicated in the output below. Is this video viewing issue a common problem, and if it is, can someone provide some direction to correct it. Drop/Terminate data to/from source using firewalld rich rules

I need to be able to temporarily cut off the source of network slowdowns. What I used to do: Router with 2 x NICs running slackware 14. Execute iptraf-ng, choose IP Network Monitor and sort by Byte Count. The sorted screen always seemed a bit confusing but I could usually pluck a couple of IP addresses with racing byte counts and cut all traffic to them using an iptables rule. Then if I wanted to identify the computer or device, I’d go into the dhcpd.leases file and look for the ip address and the corresponding device hostname. It was a bit of a pain, but it worked. Now: Router with 2 x NIC’s running CentOS 7. Using systemd and firewalld with 2 zones: external (internet-facing) and internal (LAN-facing). Now when I try the same thing using firewall-cmd rich rules, it won’t work. off-topic question about RDP to Win-10

I have a win10 VM in virtualbox on my Linux (C7) desktop. I CAN connect to it with rdesktop 1.8.3 (now rather old, but it's the latest release), but cannot connect with remmina or krdc. Both of them just hang for a while then say they can't connect. Curiously, they all will connect to the win10 box in my office. They don't show any other useful information, and I don't know where to go to figure this out. Anyone out there have any ideas they can share? thanks in advance! Multiple grub2 Users with Passwords

Hello All, I am trying to set multiple users with passwords for modifying grub2 menu entries at boot. I know I can set a "root" user grub2 password with grub2-setpassword. I have also been able to make a grub2 user password using the grub2-mkpasswd-pbkdf2 command and adding set superusers="user1" to the /etc/grub.d/40_custom file. However, I have multiple user administrators that will possibly need access to grub at boot (i.e. to boot to single user mode to fix a broken configuration file). I've tried generating two different passwords with grub2-mkpasswd-pbkdf2 and adding: set superusers="user1, user2" password_pbkdf2 user1 grub.pbkdf2.sha512.1000./hash1/ password_pbkdf2 user2 grub.pbkdf2.sha512.1000./hash2/ with no success. The first user account worked but not the second. Does anyone know the correct syntax to add multiple grub2 user accounts with different passwords in 40_custom? All tutorials I've found online explain a single user but not multiple.

Evolution: always a 90-second delay

I'm trying to use Evolution on the latest CentOS 7. Whenever I try to receive or send mail, there's always a 90-second delay before the connection works. Since the delay is always exactly 90 seconds, I think I may be waiting for something to time out. Perhaps this is a clue. My address is user(a)example.com. I have to log in to pop.example.com or imap.example.com as user, not as user(a)example.com. Evolution seems to always try to connect as user(a)pop.example.com or user(a)imap.example.com. I can't get it to try to connect as user. Perhaps it tries to log in incorrectly and gives up after 90 seconds, and then tries to log in correctly. I want to use Evolution because I want my mail client to use maildir rather then mbox. I used to use kmail, but that's no longer possible with CentOS 7. -- Yves Bellefeuille <yan(a)storm.ca>

CentOS 6: Logrotate / selinux problem

Ever since a recent power failure I have been getting a Logrotate error. My machine is on a UPS -- it shutdown cleanly, but I suspect that its BIOS/RTC battery is dead, since the machine came up thinking it was 1982 :-(. I reset the clock and everything is fine, *except* I had to delete Logrotate's state files (which had bad dates). Load html file into elinks from desktop

With a html file on my (Mate) desktop I would like to be able to right-click on it and select "open with" and have it load into elinks. But I haven't yet figured out the magic command line that I need for this to happen. gnome-terminal --command="elinks %s" That loads elinks but doesn't load the html file into it. gnome-terminal --command="cat %s | elinks" doesn't work either. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

Hi all! I just (well, a few days ago) installed C7 on a new-to-me (used) laptop, and notice something I've not noticed before, either on my personal desktop, or other C7 machines I use: every time I log in, it gives me a message something like "last failed login <timestamp>", where the date and time it gives are RIGHT NOW, just at the time I'm logging in (which succeeds). Anybody know why that would be happening? BTW, using the Mate desktop, but did not change the DM, so I think it is still GDM. Thanks in advance! Fresh install C7 nvidia

Yum through a proxy

I have configured yum to use a proxy via the yum.conf file by adding: proxy=http://myproxy.com:8080/ What I noticed when running yum check-up date is that some requests are going through the proxy while the system seems to be trying to resolve the domains of other hosts in the repo and trying to establish direct connections to them instead of going through the proxy. Can anyone explain this behavior?

A newbie question about searching an installed packet

Hi, I’m french and literally one. So I’m not really easy with Sheakespeare language. So, accept my apologies. As write in subject, I’m a newbie about CentOS an all RedHat declines. I wrote a Shell script for ours Debians (all sort of Debian like) which verify which packets are present before running. I thought I had found an equivalent with « yum list installed | grep <packet> » command but I have sometime alerts about a lock because an other instance of « yum » is running. I don’t understand why a simple « yum list » impose that! I suppose, like with « aptitude search », it is an understanding scorie. I’m sure there is an other way to do what I want to do: just verify if a packet is, or not, installed. Help? Desktop files change?

Hi, Does anyone know if they changed the way that desktop files for apps work? It seams that inside your start script you can no longer change your scripts directory. Does it now call some form of restricted shell? Anyone know where you can track these changes? command in kickstart file to write disklabel?

Dear All, At some point after release of CentOS 7 (though this thing might have started before, it is just when _I_ noticed it) I discovered that if I stick into machine drive without disk label, and then do kickstart installation, the command in kickstart file clearpart --initlabel does not work. Even worse: if I just use GUI installer the drive is not listed between available disks. If I switch in the same installer to some virtual console Ctrl + Alt + F2 I can see that the kernel installer run under definitely sees the drive: /dev/sda is present. It must be an issue beaten to death, but somehow my search ability fails on this particular one (I am not "googling" but "duckduckgo-ing", though this shouldn't matter the problem as usually must be myself). Can someone suggest something? I know it is trivial to just create disklabel before sticking drive in machine, but once I'm using kickstart, any need in separate manual steps feels really lame. Yum and proxy settings

I have configured yum to use a proxy via the yum.conf file by adding: proxy=http://myproxy.com:8080/ What I noticed when running yum check-up date is that some requests are going through the proxy while the system seems to be trying to resolve the domains of other hosts in the repo and trying to establish direct connections to them instead of going through the proxy. Can anyone explain this behavior?

Centos 6.9 Ipset broken after installing xtables-addon

I have managed to break my system by installing xtables-addons-1.37. Now ipset does not work. "Kernel error received: Invalid argument" I built the addon from source on my centos 6.9 system as per instructions for centos 6. It looks to me that xtables-addons has built and installed a ipset-4 extension due to my kernel: 2.6.32-754.6.3.el6.x86_64 I already had ipset v6.11 installed and now both do not work. The README indicated that I need a kernel > 2.6.35 which I presume is the problem. This now has become a major problem for me as I rely on ipset. Anyone suggest what I might do to fix this problem? What can anyone tell me about the polkit-gnome package that came with CentOS 7.5? Looking at the Fedora pack for the same, it seems like I'm missing pieces of this package. Re: https://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/epel/7/x86_64/Packages/p/polkit-gnome-0.106-0… I start my gui session with startx instead of GDM. I am having a lot of authentication issues at the moment. I am somewhat familiar with dealing with polkit but mostly things are not working well at all. On an older version of openSUSE I once used with systemd, I started up a kde-polkit-integration app as part of my X session init, in a local .xinit file. I have and old dump format backup done under fedora 7 which is stored on disk and has an sha256sum file that indicates there are no data errors in the backup file. inquiry about limitation of file system

I have a website with millions of pages. We often deploy our websites on centos with Nginx and Apache Http Server as HTTP Web Server. I am very worried about the performance of web server if the amount of pages is very very large. I wonder whether the performance will be affected if there are too many files and directories on the server. Besides, our bugdet is limited. We do not want to deploy too many Servers and use other file system such as GFS. So I want to know the limitation of centos file system and how should I handle this issue.

fingerprint reader on C-7 ???

Hi all! I just got a new (to me) used laptop (HP EliteBook 8530p) and find that it has a fingerprint reader. Wondering if it could be made to work for me (Centos-7) I did a lot of googling (well, actually duck-duck-go-ing) and found a ton of hits on either setting it up in Windoze, or others wondering if it can be used in Linux. Some info on setting it up in Ubuntu, and a couple of pages on setting it up in Fedora, pages that were ten years old, or so. Found an academic paper on a group that wrote portable tools in Java that allegedly enable it in a cross-platfor manner, but not the software itself. Does anyone here have any better information on if it is possible, and if so, how? thanks in advance! netinstall problem -- corrupt alsa-utils-1.1.0-10.el6.i686.rpm?

Hello. I try to install from the netinstall iso file. Everything works as I expect up to the screen where I have to choose between "Desktop", "Minimal Desktop", "Minimal", etc. If I choose either "Desktop" or "Minimal Desktop", I have a pop up saying "Installation Starting" with "Starting installation process", and, about a few seconds afterward, an "Error" pop up that says: The file alsa-utils-1.1.0-10.el6.i686.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a missing file, a corrupt package or corrupt media. Please verify your installation source. If I choose "Minimal", this is the same except that instead of the alsa*.rpm, it is iputils-20071127-24.el6.i386.rpm. I have successfully used this installation procedure in the past, literally tens times (last time in January). Since it says "verify your installation source", I have now tried again with CentOS-6.10-i386-netinstall.iso CentOS-6.9-i386-netinstall.iso on two different USB sticks, written with unetbootin and livecd-iso-to-disk on two different computers. I also have a DVD with some former CentOS version (perhaps 6.4). I have tried the installation on 3 different computers (on one of which the procedure worked in the past). Every time it is the same. NB: during the installation process, the URL I enter is http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6/os/i386/ Any "chance" there is a problem on the CentOS side? Otherwise, what could I be doing wrong now? One of our summer interns has stayed on during the school year to work some weekends on special assignments. This past weekend, her assignment was to draft, and try out, procedures for scanning all incoming regular mail including the envelopes. This is a new effort for us because previous mail handling was done by another organization. Most of our incoming mail is from other businesses that create printed address labels. Many of these labels also have a type of bar code below the address. Is there a Linux utility or standard application that will read and translate these codes. Thanks.

Hi, I have a setup problem with cups on my CentOS7 laptop. In client.conf If have set the cups server FDQN used at work ServerName servprint.lmy.lab.fr But when I'm at home if I do not comment this line with: # ServerName servprint.lmy.lab.fr cups freeze as soon as I try to print something on my local home printer as the remote server is unreachable. This seams to be an old 2012 bug (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1050422) but I'm unable to find any work around 6 years later! My cups in CentOS7 is cups-1.6.3-35.el7.x86_64 Any idea ?

Some warnings from SCL's MariaDB

Hi all, I am seeing a lot of warnings with mariadb's server from yesterday: InnoDB: page_cleaner: 1000ms intended loop took 10945ms. The settings might not be optimal. According to mysql and mariadb docs, this problem is related to number of page cleaner threads. And it can only set innodb_page_cleaners as high as innodb_buffer_pool_instances. But on the basis of which options should I adjust these two parameters? Regards, C. L. Martinez

Setting up sendmail to mail system messages on CentOS 6 and 7

Hi all, I've previously configured sendmail to send system messages on selected servers running CentOS 6. Usually they just kinda' work out of the box. No problems to speak of. However most of my CentOS 7-servers are rather flakey when it comes to sendmail. Most of the time they just won't send mails for whatever reason. Further, most of the time I can get it working, it's usually about a firewall rule not set, the firewall not having been reloaded or some simple such. There is however this one server that just won't play along. Daemons are up and restarted to pick up any changes, hostnames set etc. but still nothing. I'm at wits end with this one. I've always found that very easy to use and also requires almost no configuration: https://www.server-world.info/en/note?os=CentOS_7&p=mail&f=1 (on the same site, a lot of very useful CentOS7 info) Usually for local servers, all I do is: 1. Add root alias in /etc/aliases 2. Run 'newaliases' 3. Send test mail: echo "test from `hostname`" | mail -s 'mail test' me@address That's all. ian

libuv bug ??

EPEL package but I think there's a packaging bug, thought I would ask here. Trying to build something that requires libuv-devel - it finds the .so but can't determine version. header files are in /usr/include/uv however the pkgconfig file specifies /usr/include as the include directory. The pkgconfig file also has the version so I'm not sure why the make file can't determine version, but maybe it is trying to get version from a header and looking in /usr/include instead of /usr/include/uv because the pkgconfig file doesn't specify the subdirectory? Other devel packages with header files in sub directory or /usr/include do list the sub directory in the pkgconfig file, so I think there might be a bug in that pkgconfig file because it doesn't?
