./configure -> "libgd unusable" (shall I build from source or scrape and rebuild?)

On a relatively new Nagios 2.x / CentOS 4.x server (only like a week old), I am experiencing gd(-devel/-progs) problems and am wondering if I should just scrape and rebuild. Here is my situation: I installed LAMP+Nagios+NagiosQL and was going to install PerfParse so that I could have trending info integrated with Nagios. The configure script would run ok, but would crap out on make && make install, leading me to believe something was missing from the configure script (I had all the prequesisite files installed). In an effort to fix it, another sysadmin did a "yum remove gd", which ripped out Nagios. I reinstalled Nagios and gd, thinking that would be ok, and since then, PerfParse's configure script says that "libgd is unusable" Any ideas? Or should I just scrape and rebuild while I still have time before this goes into production?

video capture via nvidia g3, cento5 (rhel5) - arrrgghhh

I've never messed with video capture on a linux system, and someone point me the right direction? I've been googling like crazy, and can't seem to get any good pointers. I'm trying to get some kind of video capture working and eventually get a live cam setup and security setup with motion sensing. I've given up on getting my USB webcam to work. I'm now trying via the video input of my G3 card. I've installed the latest nvidia drivers for g3 and still no go. Not sure I even have the slightest clue of what I'm doing. Any pointers or good resources? Thanks.

32bit HVM within CentOS5 x86_64+xen3?

Hi *! I have to install a xen virtualization host that will start with 4GB RAM and will maybe grow to 8GB in the future. And there has to be a 32bit winXP domU. Is CentOS5(.1) x86_64 able to run 32bit HVMs or do i have to stick with i386/PAE? /nils.

Adding user's and groups

Is it ok to edit the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files manually to add users and groups or would this circumvent other required system commands from being executed when adding them at the command line via useradd and groupadd? In reading the docs @ http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/s1-users-tools.htm… I see a user that is created with these utilities is disabled until unlocked with passwd. If someone is creating users for services without home dirs and shell access, how do you handle the password? Looking at the example provided in a doc I am reading, there is "*" in the password field in the passwd file. Is that suggesting it's just not displayed in the doc, or does the "*" have specific meaning? Thanks! jlc

Hi all.. I would like to switch to CENTOS Postfix from sendmail. My current sendmail, in combination with the very old obtuse-smtpd, allows me: 1. To control who of the internal users can send mail and to which domain or accounts 2. To control who of the internal users can receive mail and from which domain or accounts 3. To obtain a copy of all sent mails 4. To obtain a copy of all received mails Obtuse-smtpd is very easy to configure and very effective. It takes control of all smtp activities over Port 25 and, after filtering and checking, passes the safe mails to sendmail for final delivery. Obtuse can, also, check for addressability, through DNS, of the mail sender and other useful features. Unfortunately, obtuse-smtpd is so old that it works only (don't be surprised) with old sendmail versions. So, I always have to uninstall the in-OS shipped modern sendmail version and replace it with the proper old version. Now: Can Postfix do all this ? Or, at least: Can Postfix work in combination with obtuse-smtpd ? (at the end, obtuse just calls sendmail for the real mail delivery; it only receives mail in port 25 and checks what it receives with its rules, allowing or rejecting at the end) Thanks a lot, in advance. Replacement for Linux-HA (heartbeat) - RedHat cluster?

Hello, I'm beginning to give up on making Linux-HA's heartbeat work for my environment (CentOS x86_64) and am wondering what other option have I got to help me: 1. Use IPVS to maintain a cluster of virtual servers, either master/slave or load-balanced. 2. Use DRBD in master/slave fashion to keep a home-grown application highly-available. The first thing I stumbled upon is RedHat Cluster Suite ( http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/centos_linux_guides/centos_cluster_c…) from which I also saw some packages on my CentOS servers. I've never heard of it before and am just starting to dig its docs, but if someone here can confirm/deny that this is a possible route to take it might save me some time or doubts. Thanks, --Amos

Hi, there was a message in the list at Fri 26 Oct 2007 21:13:58, that beagle was added to centos testing repo. But I could not find it there. Please could someone give me an advice. Thank's a lot! "We have added beagle-0.2.18, tomboy-0.8.1, and mono-1.2.4 to the CentOS-5 testing repo for both x86_64 and i386." Are there any experiences with beagle under centos 5? Centos 5.1 distro: How to upgrade 5.0 to 5.1 with yum??

Hi, Redhat announced RHEL 5.1 on Nov 07, so hopefully CentOS 5.1 will be ready shortly. But I get kind of nervous of the arrival of 5.1. My problem is: I have hundreds Centos 5.0 boxes just finished installation and I will continue to install and upgrade hundreds more in next few months. With the arrival of Centos 5.1, I don't like to reinstall them anymore but continuous upgrade instead -- if this is possible? Currently I download the Centos 5.0 upgrade packages from mirror sites on Internet (.../centos/5/updates/{SRPMS,i386,x86_64}/...), with the arrival of Centos 5.1, are the existing Centos 5.0 update packages will be removed in honor of Centos 5.1 updates? or it will stay? And how about the Centos 5.1's default packages in distro? Give an example here: 2.6.18-8.1.15 version kernel is the most recently updated kernel for Centos 5.0 distro, if the Centos 5.1 distro comes with 2.6.18-8.1.10000 kernel and in the first few weeks there are no kernel updates for 5.1, then how can I upgrade my kernel to 2.6.18-8.1.10000 naturally -- will the 2.6.18-8.1.10000 shows in the same update sources directories(.../centos/5/updates/{SRPMS,i386,x86_64/...)? A similar question is: are the update diretories contains only updates for 5.1 distro, or both 5.0 and 5.1? Deleting a user?

Hello, I've compiled linux-ha heartbeat into an RPM but when I try to install it (after "yum erase heartbeat*") it complains that the user hacluster still exists: # rpm -ivh heartbeat-2.1.2-1.x86_64.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] useradd: user hacluster exists error: %pre(heartbeat-2.1.2-1.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 9 error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping heartbeat-2.1.2-1 I ran "userdel -r hacluster" which just disabled the user login then edited /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow to remove this user completely, but I still get this error. What else can I do to remove this user and help useradd succeed? I'd rather not force script-skipping if at all possible. Thanks, --Amos

Hi Guys, I had a strange problem yesterday and I'm curious as to what everyone thinks. I have a client with a Red Hat Enterprise 2.1 cluster. All quality HP equipment with an MSA 500 storage array acting as the shared storage between the two nodes in the cluster. This cluster is configured for reliability and not load balancing. All work is handled by one node or the other not both. There are two 100GB RAID 5 logical drives in the MSA500. Linux sees them as /dev/md2 and /dev/md3 respectively. Running cat /proc/mdstat shows them as "active multipath" and otherwise healthy. There is a nightly shell script that runs and backs up information via tar to a USB external drive. The last thing the script does before unmounting the USB drive is to run the sync command. Yesterday it was noticed that the backup script was hung. A quick check via "ps aux" showed the backup script and a sync process still hanging around from Monday night. All attempts to stop these processed failed and it was decided a reboot was the best fix. All production services where shut down as much as possible. Because of the locked processes the machine would hot shut down properly and was physically turned off. On reboot the drives in the server were checked via e2fsck with no problems. The shared storage: md2 and md3 also mounted without errors. All services started properly. No errors about md2 or md3 were reported in dmesg or /var/log/messages Strangely, all files added via Samba after Monday are gone. This is limited to only one device: md3. Everything else is fine. Checking the two drives/partitions that make up md3 show none of the missing files. Any brilliant thoughts as to where those files might have gone would be appreciated. The files lost are not critical so there are no major problems but it's a puzzle I can't quite figure out. Shawn

Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility - mini-pci wireless card 1390

Is there any way I can find a driver and/or get the above wireless card working in CentOS 5 on my Dell laptop (Inspiron 1501). I've installed ipw2200 from RPMForge, but it now appears that this won't work because the card is not an Intel PRO/Wireless card. Dell seem to support only MS Windows Vista now so I don't think there's much chance of getting a driver from them - so am I on a fruitless 'crusade' in trying to get wifi in CentOS 5 in this case? Any helpful advice much appreciated please? Thanks, Andy

I finally picked up a "real" modem (not a winmodem) and put it in my machine. I pulled down the hsfmodem driver from the source, got a license and installed the driver at full power. If I use wvdial, I can get out through the modem, so I know that works. By any chances, have you ran 'ps ax' from root and looked to see what does not look like it should be there?? IF you are willing, paste your 'ps' output for us to help you find the program that is running and sending out the emails. also review your sendmail rule set. Next, to help lock down your server a little more make sure you have set a password on your VNC. I had and Italian 17 year old poking around one of my Amateur Radio boxes via VNC, simply cause I forgot to set a vnc password, so it was wide open like a windoz server box without a login screen, you know, the good old "I AM OPEN FOR YOUR PLEASURES..." Also change your sshd, the port it is on, and do a rule set that only allows a specific ip to access it. I think I am correct saying you can do that as well with VNC. I am runnig posfix on Centos 4.4 as a Mailgateway. It only accepts mails for domains and then forwards mails to Lotus domino Server. All clients sends outgoing mails to that Lotus domino Server. Then , That Lotus Domino Server sends mails to Postfix mailgateway. This postfix mailgateway sends mails to all the destinations. But, This Postfix mailgateway has about 150 messages in the mailq. Some are unwanted mails. I think they keep trying until 5 days old. I want decrease it to ONE DAY. In Sendmail, this can be done by editing sendmail.mc as below. centos remote installation

Hello I am installing Centos from remote location and have no problem if I upgrade Centos, however if I will have problem if I go through fresh installation, because once the fresh installation finished,at next reboot Centos will ask to define another user name with its pasword and that will be the time I will not see the console messages, so I should automate that part. Is there any easy way to do this or I should go all the way through Kickstart procedures ? Thanks

Kernel panic - where to go from here?

CentOS 5 has been running continuously since 9/21 on my "do everything" home server (with the exception of a kernel update). It's a fairly old Athlon machine that serves as a firewall and various servers (dovecot, samba, NFS, dhcp, OpenVPN, etc). I connected via OpenVPN about a week ago and discovered I get a kernel panic. I've since found that this is very repeatable and happens only after being connected via OpenVPN for about 4 hours or so. I was able to manually copy the stuff on the console after the panic (see below). I googled "unable to handle kernel paging request" and didn't really find anything useful (to me). I've tried both kernel version 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5 and 2.6.18-8.1.15.el5 as well as OpenVPN versions 2.1_rc4-1 and 2.0.9 all with the same results. Not sure where to go with this(?). Should I post this on a kernel mailing list? Or somewhere else? network interface activation order

I am using CentOS as a firewall/router. I am using bonded interfaces, vlan interfaces, and bridge interfaces. My problem currently is that on boot the system is attempting to activate the bridge interface before it's bonded-vlan members have been created. What this means is that the bridge is created but not activated. Is there anyway for me to influence the activation order and have bridge interfaces dealt with last? CentOS /boot kernel files removed after rpm upgrades

Hello, I ran a yum update on a centos 5 machine. I then removed some old kernel files, 2.6.x.14 and 2.6.x.10 older kernels. The issue is i got the error "Grub can not create template". I checked /boot and it is now empty. If i reboot this box it certainly will have an issue. I'm running the latest kernel 2.6.x.15 i believe it is. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks. Dave.

Stuck at GRUB

Hi, I have a Dell poweredge 400SC here with an LSI scsi card. I installed Centos4 a while ago and put it in a datacenter. I rebooted many weeks after, and the machine didn't come back up. So I went to the datacenter tonight to find out that the server was stuck at "GRUB". Nothing more. So I decided to re-install Centos4. The partitions were already there, so I just made sure partitions were formatted and the install went fine. When I rebooted, "GRUB". I'm at this point and I don't know exactly what I could do to diagnose furthere. Any ideas? Regards, Ugo

Find out how they got in and make sure that hole is fixed. Do an rpm verify on all installed packages (excluding configs), reinstall the rpms that fail the verify. Find all binaries that are not accountable in rpm and nuke them. Harden your host with selinux and audit, keep audit logs of all changes to binary files and essential configs and make sure the audit logs are immutable. Keep an eye on the system for a while to make sure you haven't missed anything. More importantly, mount your dev filesys with atimes disabled and ext3 indexing on. Use tmpfs for /tmp, /usr/tmp, /var/tmp, it uses swappable ram filesys which helps a lot too. Make sure nothing gets put in those tmp dirs that needs to persist across a reboot and limit the max size each can take to 1/2 total memory. More memory... RAID, LVM, extra disks...

Hi, This is my current config: /dev/md0 -> 200 MB -> sda1 + sdd1 -> /boot /dev/md1 -> 36 GB -> sda2 + sdd2 -> form VolGroup00 with md2 /dev/md2 -> 18 GB -> sdb1 + sde1 -> form VolGroup00 with md1 sda,sdd -> 36 GB 10k SCSI HDDs sdb,sde -> 18 GB 10k SCSI HDDs I have added 2 36 GB 10K SCSI drives in it, they are detected as sdc and sdf. What should I do if I want to optimize disk space? The simplest solution would be to create /dev/md3 out of sdc1 and sdf1, and add it to the VG, and increase the size of my /vz logical volume. However, if I could convert that to a RAID5 (it could be possible to re-install, but I would rather not), I could have 6 drives in RAID5, so I'd have 5x36 GB (180) of space available total, instead of 3*36 (108). Also, please note that this is a Dual PIII 1.2 Tualatin. I'm runing OpenVZ with virtual machines that are not really CPU expensive, but I would not like to see my processors spending most of their time computing XORs for the RAID5. Any suggestions/tips welcome. Regards, Ugo

One thing I remember about getting NetworkManager and the piece that handles keys (not gnome-keyring; don't remember the name right now and the laptop is off) was to tell that piece to use the generic wireless kernel API instead of the ndiswrapper control interface. reasons for using CentOS in business environments

My apologies if this question has been previously answered, but could anyone here provide me with resources that I might use to help build a case for exclusively using CentOS in an enterprise environment? (Approximately 200 servers) Long story short, I've used a little of everything out there (Gentoo/Debian/*BSD/Slackware) and have a fairly good overall strategy of how they all work (all of them have lived on my laptop at one time or another over the last 10 years or so), but I'm now looking for solid business reasons that I can present to the CxO types of a company to show them that CentOS is probably where they'd like to look. Reasons thus far I've come up with include: --free *and* "fully" (at least, in my experience) compatible with RHEL --fairly stable (I don't have problems unless I start mixing repos) --yum packages (almost as cool as Debian! Ok, I'm biased...or maybe I don't know how to properly use yum?) Any other suggestions / tips I might add to my list would be greatly appreciated!

cisco vpn client on linux

Is there a cisco vpn client for linux centso 5 AMD 64 bit? Using google it talks about cisco vpn client but everyplace to download is blocked. I then found a vpnc reference but did not find a 64 bit version. yum install vpnc did nothing.... What is my next step? Jerry
