Sorry guys. I saw the "uploading the new DVD's" a few days ago and thought I would ask. I really do not want to put anyone out and please do not go through any trouble on my account. I would rather be contributing rather than asking. Like I said I had already moved to Fedora for the P5KC and for the P5K-VM I have been trying to duplicate what Dave is doing. But I never know if I am doing it right or what else am I screwing up by rolling only new kernel rpms. Perhaps that is the kind of questions I should be asking rather than ask if things are ready. Can you get away with taking new kernels from kernel.org and making rpms out of them to use with Centos 5.0 without it effecting anything else or having to upgrade anything else? Thanks again. btw - like I said in email last week at the start of this thread you never hear from me but your efforts maintaining Centos are greatly appreciated. public Key Problems after Centos 4 -> 5 update.

Hi, I have just updated my system from Centos 4 to 5 using the DVD. When I try to update using Yum, it gets so far then I get: "Public key for tomcat5-jsp-2.0-api-5.5.23-0jpp.3.0.2.el5.i386.rpm is not installed" How do I get the key and install it? Thanks Rob

logrotate problem

Dear All Salam, I have syslog server running logs of network devices, I am facing problem about two weeks that my weekly log is not rotating, as i manually runs the script it does, secondly i put the entry in cron.daily, still today i checked but no log rotation.... manually running is fine. 02 4 * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.daily Regards, Umair Shakil ETD

Found an error or two from my logwatch report from yesterday, thought I would share this in hopes this is just first time run of the problem I noticed in the Kernel report section... Also not sure why there's an issue with automount either.... but I guess I could ask on that issue as well. Wits end! ndis got me - give me sanity with my wireless!!!

All - desperate plea for help here. Overview Centos 4.5 Kernel 2.6.9.55.0.9.EL with source dell Latitude 810 Im totally at my wits end... Ive tried like mad to get ndiswrapper to work for my lynksys WPC54GS wireless card. No matter what I try ndis gives some kind of error on installing the module after about a dozen attempts 8 kernels, and 5 days- I finally GAVE UP! unreal So, I install the http://www.linuxant.com/company/ ever$ion (im not above paying $20 to save me a few wasted days) this program dosnt have a problem detecting the card, making the lights blink, I cane see the access point using iwlist scan, I know precisely what the essid is, as well as the encryption key, BUT now.... the stupid thing cant get an ip form my dhcp server!! Please help - some kind of sanity check, Im ready to jump out the window!! ;) Im up for ANY solution, I can install kernel source.. ndis bla... I just need some thing that will work. At this point i have an incredibly low opinion of the developers of ndis - that shouldn't not release such stuff. Ive followed the dcs to the letter and either the kernal compile puked... or ndis chokes on some flyshit in a function.... unreal! Anyway I do have this working on the same laptop but I did it about a year ago and cnat find the 1.37 version of ndis. At tthis point ndis is just too picky Anyone??? Thnaks Bob

rsync bug with --relative and --delete fixed in CentOS5?

Yohoo! I'm using rsnapshot-1.3.0-1.el5.rf (from DAG) and rsync-2.6.9-1.el5.rf (from CentOS5) together. Rsnapshot now starts every task with the "--relative" switch. Without this switch it will backup all subsequent folders (like /proc and so on) which isn't desired. So I can't omit the "--relative". But there was a bug for rsync prior to 2.6.9 that it won't delete files from the destination directory when "--relative" and "--delete" are used together. See at http://samba.anu.edu.au/ftp/rsync/rsync-2.6.9-NEWS for this. Now I figured out that this bug is fixed in FedoraCore5. In CentOS5 I have rsync-2.6.9-1.el5.rf Now my question is if this bug is fixed in CentOS5/ RHEL5? Hi I am sure the answer here is really easy but i am stuck! # mount | grep data | awk '{print$1,$2,$3}' gives me the info i require locally, however i need to execute this over about 1000 hosts so i run things remotely using ssh something like # MOUNTER=`ssh $i 'mount | grep data | awk '{print$1,$2,$3}''` however this fails as at the end of the line there are 2 ticks eg ' together - Can anyone offer me some syntax help please? thanks

Hi all, I've the same problem, I've download the CentOS-5.0-x86_64-bin-DVD.iso from one centos mirror, i've applied deltaiso and the created image is 2 GB, the md5sum check of iso.delta (CentOS-5.0-x86_64-bin-DVD-ich9.iso.delta) is ok, what's wrong ? deltaiso program exit on the same as Michael , maybe I've downloaded the worng DVD 64 bit iso version? do you know any good mirror link for that? thank you in advance Simone

Xen crashes?

Is anyone else having problem with Xen Crashes or can provide hints why this happens? I can resolve it by restarting /etc/init.d/xendomains but I'm curios why it happens, the machine is running 64bit Centos 5, 16GB memory. Hi All, I have a Trixbox server (CentOS derivative) from which our Cisco IP phones get their config files via TFTP. I have noticed that when I run the TFTP server via "service xinetd start", I am not able to get files via TFTP. I have tested it by doing a manual transfer via a TFTP client from another machine. When I try to run the TFTP service manually by doing "/usr/sbin/in.tftpd -l", I do not encounter any problem whatsoever? Any pointers regarding this issue? Do I have to enable anything else? Hi, Does anyone have a pointer to correct documantation for generating and installing a self signed ssl cert for use on httpd on a C-5 machine? The docs say to use genkey but AFAIK upstream rm'd crypto-utils from the distro and as such it is not available. rolling your own kernel - guidelines?

Let's say I want to use a much newer kernel - even one from the future, such as the upcoming 2.6.24. :-) What would y'all smart folks do in this case, in order to avoid any possible nasty consequences? Would you import the config file from the original CentOS5 kernel into the new kernel, and let the kernel deal with the differences? Using raid 1 for rollback purposes

Hi All, For quite some time I've used raid 1 as a means of providing a rollback mechanism for an upgrade (which I learned from others long ago). So essentially, before an upgrade you split the mirrors and upgrade one side or the other. If your upgrade goes well you sync one way, if your upgrade does not you sync the other (much hand waving and chanting going on, as its more complicated than that, but that is the essence of the solution). Recently, I was asked to do the same thing but with a raid 1+0 solution. Its easy, enough to break the raid 1 volumes underneath, but then how do I use the broke off volumes to form the duplicate strip. Pictures may help. About 50% of the time this works with no issue, the rest of the time it fails. Cronjob script with date stamp?

I have a cron job that calls a shell script - the script invokes dump. I'd like to do two things: - Have the script dump the results of the job to a text file. I tried this with /path/to/dump my switches -v >> /home/me/dump.log But that just produced an empty file. - Have the dump file be date-stamped with the date it was executed. Right now, I manually edit the script to change the filename to the date the dump will be taken. To get a differential dump, would I have dump produce its output to the same file each time? I would not want to overwright the existing contents. I'm currently dumping to a file on an external hard drive, but will eventually go to tape. Thanks for feedback. Scott

Migrate CentOS 3 to 4 to 5?

Hi, After the previous debacle with PHP and MySQL it has been decided that we think about an upgrade from CentOS 3 to 5, since that would solve our problem, if successful. I tried finding information on how to best attempt this, but thanks to a plethora of contradictory information my head is now spinning with a few rpm (rounds per minute). The situation is as follows: Remote box at our host who offers CentOS 3 as the most up-to-date OS, unless you pay them an unholy amount of money for RHEL or Windows licences. Popping in a CD for an upgrade does not work for us. We can and will have the OS restored to a clean post-install state prior to updating. I have little intimate knowledge with CentOS, RPMs or yum, but general good UNIX experience. I know "live" yum migrations are greatly discouraged, but it seems to work for people. The most detailed instructions I seemed to be able to find are here: http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=382 Can anybody confirm this to work, is there anything else that's implied but not spelled out? dovecot fails to start at boot, but starts manually

dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5 on CentOS 5 I reboot the server and dovecot fails to start. But I can then issue "service dovecot start" and it starts up just fine. How to debug? I don't see anything in /var/log/messages nor /var/log/maillog. I did have to set SELinux to permissive (in /etc/selinux/config), as dovecot can't get at its SSL certs. I'm debugging that independently. (SELinux is also disabled for clamav, another item to debug.)

VMware not correctly configured for running kernel

Something happened over the weekend power-related on my VMware test server, and when I came back and restarted my VMware server box (running CentOS), I got the following message: "VMware Server is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for the running kernel. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl." I ran that .pl script, answered all the questions (just entering in the default values), and all seems to work ok now. Is this someting VMware related? CentOS 4 related? Or possibly some misconfiguration on my part? This box has been working fine for months (and has been rebooted many times), so I'm not sure what "changed" (certainly nothing on the host OS level). Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I have a local yum repository for CentOS4, and from time to time I add new (custom) kernel RPMS. However, when I run 'yum update' on an SMP box, yum 'installs' the new kernel, kernel-devel and kernel-smp packages, but 'updates' the kernel-smp-devel package. i.e. I end up with multiple versions of the kernel, kernel-devel and kernel-smp packages, but only the latest kernel-smp-devel What do I need to do to get the kernel-smp-devel RPMS to 'install' instead of 'update'? Quota inside chroot environment

Hi List, I have users chroot'ed on a CentOS 5 server. They should be able to check their current disk usage with the quota command. Basically, it works - however, there are some drawbacks I hope someone can help me on: In order for the user to access the aquota.user file I hard-linked it into the users root. Unfortunately the users do not 'see' any changes in disk usage until quotaoff/on is executed. I have a FreeBSD 5.3 server with the same setup where this step is not required. I also noticed while quota is enabled I cannot even create the hard link on the aquota.user file into a users root. Can someone explain what's wrong about my setup or does anyone have another approach to get quotas working for chroot'ed users? David

group descriptors corrupted on ext3 filesystem

I am unable to mount an ext3 filesystem on RHEL AS 2.1. This is not the boot or root filesystem. When I try to mount the file system, I get the following error: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdj1, or too many mounted file systems When I try to run e2fsck -vvfy /dev/sdj1 I get the following error: Group descriptors look bad... trying backup blocks... Segmentation fault When I try running e2fsck -b 294912 -vvfy /dev/sdj1 (providing backup superblock location ..which I tried several of) I get the following error: Segmentation fault In dmesg, after trying to mount the filesystem, I get the following error: EXT3-fs: group descriptors corrupted ! EXT3-fs error (device sd(8,145)): ext3_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 128 not in group (block 523)! Any ideas? Thanks, Barry

Centos 5 on Large Disks.

Hi All, Sorry if this has been answered many times. But i have been going through a lot of pages (via google search). The more i search, the more its confusing me. I have a server with 6 (750G each) SATA disks with H/W Raid 5. I plan to allocate the space as follows swap 8G /boot 100M / 20G -- and remaining space to /data{1,2,3,N} (equal sizes) However after the installation and reboot, i got an error about bad partition for /data8 I had hit the 2T limit. Then i found this page at http://www.knowplace.org/pages/howtos/linux_large_filesystems_support.php which speaks of using Parted/LVM2 and XFS. If i understand this correctly, I need to have 1 disk to host the CentOS installation. And i can use the other 5 disks in a RAID array (label type gpt...) Is it not possible to partition and use the existing RAID 5 volume? I really am not sure about how to proceed for this big disk problem. Any ideas/links will really help. Thank you. Regards, A.S

DHCP Client without default gateway

Hi all, I have a question about DHCP, it's possible to get an IP address (from ISP) but that the client doesn't get a default gateway from DHCP? Because I want to put a different default gw. And if this is possible, what I have to do? Thanks in advance Dario

NIS/YP revelation (I think)

So I configured my Enterprise 5 server to have NFS configured on specific ports via the NFS Server menu option. Since having done that, I am unable to get my two CentOS 5 workstations to bind via YP. One worked just fine before the port reconfiguration, but broke after. The other never worked fine. NFS works fine on both, but NIS will no longer bind. What do I need to change on the client side to permit binding? I presume the port changes are the problem, and solution. Thanks. Scott

packages in "base" that are not in "nobase"

Is there a way to list the packages that are in a "base" install, but that are not in a "nobase" (core) install? I did a nobase install, then ran "yum groupinstall Base", but this just lists everything in base, including the core packages. Mainly, I'm just looking to audit the packages, and add only necessary ones back to a nobase install. So far, I've come up with sendmail, man, logwatch, logrotate, vixie-cron. johnn

SATA disk issue

I'm in the process of upgrading the hardware in a small cluster based on CentOS 5 and Xen. The old hardware had dual ide disks, the new dual SATA. In both cases /boot and / are on RAID 1 partitions on each of the disks. The remainder of the disk is a RAID 0 with volume group laid on top. Here's my problem, when booting to Xen the box gets to the point of mounting filesystems for dom0, detects the logical volumes but cannot find an ext3 filesystem on md1 then panics. If booting straight to Linux all goes fine. The same configuration is running fine on the box with the ide disks. I'm wondering if the way Xen handles SATA (running as SCSI devices (sda, sdb, etc.) might be part of this, seems unlikely as the lv's in the vg are at least detected which would seem to be comparable to being able to detect an ext3 filesystem. FWIW I checked the grub.conf against the old config and there are no pertinent differences and I compared the initrd's pointed to by each stanza and they are identical (extracted to sepearate directories, did a diff on the directories, compared the init scripts from the old initrd and the new and found nothing not related to the additional hardware and all seeming to be in order. Other potentially significant differences: AMD Athlon 4400 dual core CPU vs. Intel 2.4 GHz 4 gigs RAM vs. 2 gig RAM ASUS M2A-VM system board vs. IBM NetVista Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Upgrading PHP + MySQL on CentOS 3

Hi, I have a CentOS 3 server that I need to update to MySQL 5 + PHP4. I downloaded and installed the MySQL client and server RPM packages for Red Hat 3, including the Shared Compatibility Libraries which provide /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.10, .12, .14 and .15, which seems to be the recommended way of upgrading a MySQL 3 installation. I then went on to recompile PHP 4.4.7, which worked fine. But my PHP installation is still using libmysqlclient.so.10, which does not play 100% correctly with the current MySQL 5 server. I'd need it to use libmysqlclient.so.15. Apparently /usr/lib/php4/mysql.so is linked to libmysqlclient.so.10. How do I update/replace/relink the php-mysql connector to have PHP talk to MySQL using the current client libraries? Any hints'd greatly appreciated. Cheers, Dav
