fetchmail log messages I don't understand

I see these messages every time fetchmail pops my mail. I don't understand what certificates it is talking about, or how to straighten this out. fetchmail: Server CommonName mismatch: localhost != mail.mydomain.com fetchmail: Server certificate verification error: self signed certificate fetchmail: Server certificate verification error: certificate has expired What do I need to read up on to understand this and find a fix? Centos 5 on Large Disks.

Hi All, Sorry if this has been answered many times. But i have been going through a lot of pages (via google search). The more i search, the more its confusing me. I have a server with 6 (750G each) SATA disks with H/W Raid 5. I plan to allocate the space as follows swap 8G /boot 100M / 20G -- and remaining space to /data{1,2,3,N} (equal sizes) However after the installation and reboot, i got an error about bad partition for /data8 I had hit the 2T limit. Then i found this page at http://www.knowplace.org/pages/howtos/linux_large_filesystems_support.php which speaks of using Parted/LVM2 and XFS. If i understand this correctly, I need to have 1 disk to host the CentOS installation. And i can use the other 5 disks in a RAID array (label type gpt...) Is it not possible to partition and use the existing RAID 5 volume? I really am not sure about how to proceed for this big disk problem. Any ideas/links will really help. Thank you. Regards, A.S

DHCP Client without default gateway

NIS/YP revelation (I think)

So I configured my Enterprise 5 server to have NFS configured on specific ports via the NFS Server menu option. Since having done that, I am unable to get my two CentOS 5 workstations to bind via YP. One worked just fine before the port reconfiguration, but broke after. The other never worked fine. NFS works fine on both, but NIS will no longer bind. What do I need to change on the client side to permit binding? I presume the port changes are the problem, and solution. Thanks. Scott

packages in "base" that are not in "nobase"

Is there a way to list the packages that are in a "base" install, but that are not in a "nobase" (core) install? I did a nobase install, then ran "yum groupinstall Base", but this just lists everything in base, including the core packages. Mainly, I'm just looking to audit the packages, and add only necessary ones back to a nobase install. So far, I've come up with sendmail, man, logwatch, logrotate, vixie-cron. johnn

SATA disk issue

I'm in the process of upgrading the hardware in a small cluster based on CentOS 5 and Xen. The old hardware had dual ide disks, the new dual SATA. In both cases /boot and / are on RAID 1 partitions on each of the disks. The remainder of the disk is a RAID 0 with volume group laid on top. Here's my problem, when booting to Xen the box gets to the point of mounting filesystems for dom0, detects the logical volumes but cannot find an ext3 filesystem on md1 then panics. If booting straight to Linux all goes fine. The same configuration is running fine on the box with the ide disks. I'm wondering if the way Xen handles SATA (running as SCSI devices (sda, sdb, etc.) might be part of this, seems unlikely as the lv's in the vg are at least detected which would seem to be comparable to being able to detect an ext3 filesystem. FWIW I checked the grub.conf against the old config and there are no pertinent differences and I compared the initrd's pointed to by each stanza and they are identical (extracted to sepearate directories, did a diff on the directories, compared the init scripts from the old initrd and the new and found nothing not related to the additional hardware and all seeming to be in order. Other potentially significant differences: AMD Athlon 4400 dual core CPU vs. Intel 2.4 GHz 4 gigs RAM vs. 2 gig RAM ASUS M2A-VM system board vs. IBM NetVista Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Upgrading PHP + MySQL on CentOS 3

Hi, I have a CentOS 3 server that I need to update to MySQL 5 + PHP4. I downloaded and installed the MySQL client and server RPM packages for Red Hat 3, including the Shared Compatibility Libraries which provide /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.10, .12, .14 and .15, which seems to be the recommended way of upgrading a MySQL 3 installation. I then went on to recompile PHP 4.4.7, which worked fine. But my PHP installation is still using libmysqlclient.so.10, which does not play 100% correctly with the current MySQL 5 server. I'd need it to use libmysqlclient.so.15. Apparently /usr/lib/php4/mysql.so is linked to libmysqlclient.so.10. How do I update/replace/relink the php-mysql connector to have PHP talk to MySQL using the current client libraries? Any hints'd greatly appreciated. Cheers, Dav

Lan Kernel Problem

I'm building a Linux box to act as Proxy/Router/Firewall. I'm using CentOS 4.5, with an "old" motherboard (Asus A8V-X), and two Ethernet NIC, based on a realtek chip, that's widely supported under 2.4 and later kernel (the cards were functioning excellent in another PC whit Fedora Core 1). CentOS detects the on board LAN, but not the other two, in fact, knoppix 5.0.1 doesn't detect too (kernel 2.6.17), but, Knoppix 5.1.1 (kernel 2.6.19) detects all three cards. Do you have any idea why this behavior? Centos 5.0 detects all three too, but I don't now why, my firewall script (ipv4) doesn't work with this release. Now, thank you very much! Best Regards.

Samba, AD and non AD Machines

Hi All, I have configured Samba 3.0.23 to work with Active Directory. Based on all the tests shown here: http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/unixclients.html#adssdm Things are working as expected. Most machines and users are working as expected. I do have some Windows machines on another subnet, NOT joined to the domain that are giving me grief. Going to Start->Run->\\ip.of.samba.server I get the following error: The format for the computer name is invalid I can ping the samba server without problems. Installing Skype in CentOS (4.4)

I'm trying to install Skype on a CentOS 4.4 system and I've followed the instructions on the Skype website at http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/repositories.html but when I run yum install skype it fails with a whole string of error messages, ending with Error: failure: RPMS/libsigc++20-2.0.17-1.el4.rf.i386.rpm from rpmforge: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. Has anybody managed to install skype successfully - if so, how please? Thanks, Andy

multipath using 2 NICs (or HBA?)

I'm told that we cannot do Multipath I/O on our iSCSI SAN on RHEL with 2 network cards. I could use 1 network card, but need an HBA. Is this true? Do I need an HBA, or can I do Multipath using 2 NICs? We're running RHEL 4 and CentOS 4 and 5 servers on this network. I have been reading through the device-mapper documentation, but I have not found anything (unless I'm not clear on what they're saying). Eventually I will give it a try but I haven't had the time to fiddle so far. Thanks, Scott

I have this old memory that the kernels used are a hodge podge of backports etc. So for a kernel-smp-2.6.9-55.0.9.EL should I use 0.4.10? Hi We have up until now been a Dell shop but are looking at HP. I would normally monitor hardware by installing OMSA from dell and then using nagios as the monitor. Are there tools for HP that would allow me to do similar? thanks

I am forwarding this exchange from the BIND 9 list (I posted the question) because it seems relevant. any comment on this? The proper fix would be for the linux people to stop issuing this warning in production kernels. In the meantime, you can shut it up by editing lib/isc/unix/socket.c and changing the function clear_bsdcompat() so it always sets bsdcompat to ISC_FALSE.

restrict network access

Hi, I have two pc using centos 4, these machines need only access to the (big, class b) local network. Because of security reasons the network access should be restricted to this local network - mainly the users of these pc should not be able to access webpages outside of the local network. My problem is, that I have no own centos repository and therefore these two pc need access to the centos mirrors to get updates. What would be the best way to restrict the network access to the local network and allow the access to some external addresses (a centos mirror and maybe some other servers/websites). I was thinking about iptables but I'm not very experienced in this questions - maybe there is an easier way. The configuration with iptables seems to be very complex, I was skimming through some tutorials and the man pages. In thanks and with best reagrds, Arne

how does one remove bond1?

Hi List, We're using bonding to create bond0 with 2 NICs, and noticing that CentOS 5 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5 (and presumably older) creates bond1 as well. I'd like to remove bond1 from the system, so that our monitoring scripts don't pick it up, except for those machines that actually do have a bond1. So... how does one remove bond1? Thanks! Software RAID: on same IDE port or on different ones?

I have a general question on software RAID performance. If using two IDE disks on RAID 1: is there much of a difference performancewise if I put both on one IDE port as master and slave or should I better put them on seperate ports. I remember from olde days that it was recommended to put CD and hard disk on different ports to maximize the throughput between them and as RAID1 is theoretically writing to both disks at the same time I guess putting them on different ports might be an advantage. C5 i386 DVD boot problems

I tried to boot from two different CentOS 5 DVDs, both pass the checksum test, and both give me the same error on a Dell laptop from either GUI or text install modes: invalid compressed format (err=2) VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block(253,0) Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic... I did some google searching and learned other people have had the same problem, but no resolutions were ever posted. I'm downloading the CD version and will see if that makes any difference. Assuming it won't make a difference, how do I resolve this so I can get CentOS installed on the system? Thanks. Scott

I have 2 new boxes that I cannot use yet because of problems supporting these newer chipsets in 5.1. Does anyone know when the CD version of 5.0 x86-64 that has support for these chipsets be available on any on a Centos mirror? Has the support for these chipsets been added to yum yet? Here are my latest results with these chipsets and Centos 5.1 1. Asus P5K, E6850, P35 Chipset: Does not boot or install without "acpi=off all-generic-ide irqpoll nommconf" Also, when it does boot it does not recognize LAN and video hangs loading gnome. I tried install the Asus Linux driver for the mobo but 'make install' produces error that kernel sources cannot be found. 2. Asus P5K-VM, Q6600, G33 chipset: Installs and boots as long as "acpi=off" switch used. But I understand this disables multi-core support. new freenx and nx RPMS released, manual action for x86_64

There are new RPMS released for nx and freenx in the CentOS-4 and CentOS-5 Extras repository. I normally do not announce that here, as those can easily be obtained on a normal "yum upgrade/update", however in this case there are special actions required *_IF_* you have the x86_64 architecture for either CentOS-4 or CentOS-5 with the current versions of nx and freenx installed. The freenx and nx in the x86_64 tree were i386 versions prior to this release because the nomachine code would not compile on x86_64. This release fixes that and the new versions are x86_64 RPMS and no longer i386. This means that YUM will not update the currently installed i386 RPMS that are installed on x86_64 machines. ============= *_ATTENTION_* ============= If you are running nx and freenx on x86_64, to get these upgraded you *_MUST_*: 1. Manually download the x86_64 RPMS from these location: CentOS-5: <http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/extras/x86_64/RPMS/freenx-0.7.1-1.el5.cen…> <http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/extras/x86_64/RPMS/nx-3.0.0-4.el5.centos.…> CentOS-4: <http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/extras/x86_64/RPMS/freenx-0.7.1-1.el4.cen…> <http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/extras/x86_64/RPMS/nx-3.0.0-4.el4.centos.…> 2. CentOS upgrade in Xen domU?

I'm running into a slight problem trying to upgrade a CentOS 4.4 install to 5.0. The configuration: CentOS 4.4 is an old install that used to boot natively. That has since been backed up and restored to two seperate LVs (as the original install had two partitions). The host system now runs Debian, and I've been able to successfully boot the old CentOS 4.4 install under Xen (with a Debian domU kernel, but that's besides the point). I've decided to upgrade the CentOS domU to CentOS 5. After determining that the recommended upgrade path is to do so via the installer, I grabbed the CentOS installer kernel/ramdisk and configured my domU to boot from those. The installer comes up without a problem. Things get hairy when the installer takes a look at the 'disks'. I receive the following message: /dev/xvda currently has a loop partition layout. To use this disk for the installation of CentOS, it must be re-initialized, causing the loss of ALL DATA on this drive. It looks like the installer doesn't like the fact that there are no partitions (which is correct, as the 'disk' is actually a logical volume under lvm). As I'm trying to do an upgrade, and not blow away my existing setup, this isn't going to work. My question, therefore, is - how do I tell the CentOS 5 installer to ignore the fact that there are no partitions, and to simply do the install? As mentioned previously, the CentOS domU does boot perfectly fine, and given the prevalence of volume groups, logical volumes and virtual machines these days, it seems rather silly to have an installer absolutely rely on the existence of partitions before it'll let one do an upgrade or install. -- Mike Edwards | If this email address disappears, Unsolicited advertisments to | assume it was spammed to death. Postfix dropping settings CentOS4.5

My company is using Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security Suite 7.0 for linux. This setup uses Postfix as a mail gateway for MS Exchange. The problem I'm having is ever so often Postfix 2.2.11 will lose the Transport mapping lookup tables setting. When this happens, mail into our domain will stop being relayed to our Exchange server. The border router is an OpenBSD firewall running NAT between the Internet and a DMZ like subnet, and in that a Linux antivirus server is running NAT to the LAN. When the client does a DNS query it reaches to the f/w where dns is running and is returned into the A/V server but never hits the 0.254 interface. (Shown by running tcpdump on each interface.) On 28 July, I changed from ProtectBase to Priorities. I kept unusually detailed notes that day. Yesterday, when I added the RPMForge respository, so I could install MPlayer, I found that the /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/priorities.conf file no longer exists. I'm not sure how that happened. Using XEN VMs with non-US keyboards?

Is there a way to use Xen VMs with non-US keyboards at the console in a convenient way? I read somewhere in the documentation that only US-English keyboards are supported in the Xen console, but there's more to this. I would imagine that I then can type a character that is on a different key in the US-English layout from my German layout by using the key where it is on the US-English keyboard. For instance use y for z. That's how it would work on a normal console. But with the VM it's completely different and some characters cannot be typed *at all*. For instance, I cannot type the / or - characters (depending on what layout I choose: de (any) will prohibit me to type -, while us will prohibit me to type /. On the other hand when I type y I get a y. I assume the reason for this must be that the keyboard layout of the host machine is de as well. If I changed that to US-English I might be able to type and get what I expected. But I really don't want to change the main keyboard layout. Has anyone found a way to cope with this, so one could at least type all characters? The only way I can use Xen VMs at the moment seems to be to install them and then connect via ssh. centos: infinite loop at boot using mptspi scsi device

hello, i am very new to centos and experienced some trouble yesterday when installing centos 5 onto our workgroup server. Our Server is equipped with an external RAID-array using an LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI (rev 07) SCSI controller. Unfortunately the Server won't boot with the array connected, but gives the error message: target1:0:2: Domain Validation detected failure, dropping back again and again. The now deleted SuSE 9.2 distribution (kernel 2.6.11), that we used for a long time was working just fine with the array. However Debian 4.0 which uses an 2.6.18 kernel just like CentOS 5 does not. We then tried to use the recent Fedora Core 6 kernel 2.6.22-xx which is working fine again, so this has to be a kernel issue. As i don't like the idea to have to use a Fedora kernel with CentOS, i am looking for a recent (unofficial) kernel that has been tested to work with CentOS. Is there any repository for that (maybe with some kind of security updates too)? -- best regards Jan Falkenhagen

Memory problems with CentOS box

Hello all I am running CentOS 5 on a small server and I am having very strange memory malfunctions. The computer runs perfectly with no problems whatsoever. From time to time, after a soft reboot, the computer emmits beeps corresponding to a memory fault. It never reboots again until I find and remove a now defective DIMM. That DIMM can never be used again because it is out of order. This just happened for the *fourth* time and is costing me a lot of hassle and perhaps expense if the manufacturer does not replace the DIMM freely. The memory is DDR400 ECC from Kingston and of the type recommended by the motherboard's manufacturer. The board is a Tyan Tomcat i875p (S5102). Would it be possible that the DIMMs are being destroyed by some software component from the OS, perhaps the I2C management? The DIMMs do have EPROMS... Are they being incorrectly accessed by some software component and their program modified? Could this be the board's fault? And how? I don't know what to think of this, I never saw anything like that in my already long experience with computers... I must say again that this memory error *never* happens while the computer is in service, it always happened upon a soft reboot. Any hints would be appreciated. Thank you

Display resolution problem on Centos 4.5

I've got a Centos 4.5 box at work (installed at 4.0 and kept up to date) that's having a really weird problem I haven't been able to figure out. It's been doing on for a loong time but today it just got my goat and I spent some bit of time fighting with it, unsuccessfully. /etc/X11/xorg.conf specifies that the display resolution should be 1280x1024. When root logs in it is. when a user named 'interface' logs in it is. When I log in with my normal login, 'fredex', it isn't. I get 1152x864. when I look at the "screen resolution" utility on the preferences menu it says 1280x1024. when I look at the "display" utility on the "system settings" menu it says 1280x1024. but using the monitor's OSD settings, the monitor says it's 1152x864. I CAN force it to 1280x1024 by using 'xrandr', and it then works fine at that resolution until I log in the next time. I'm left to conclude that at some point in the murky past that I must have done SOMETHING in Gnome that causes Gnome to somehow mess with the resolution when I login but not when other users do. But I've been reading the Centos forums, the Red Hat Knowledgebase, and the FAQs at gnome.org, and none of them has shed any light on this issue. Can any of you help please?
