sorry, this is OT. I'm using the 9.x flash plugin with firefox on Centos 5. I keep hearing about "fullscreen mode" in flash, and it is said that it works on Linux. How do you get into that mode? I saw some videos from youtube the other day on a windows box and they were full screen. On my Centos box the same videos play in a small window in the browser. Buf ... Solved. Problem was that /etc/pam.d/racoon doesn't exists (I found this tip on NetBSD ipsec pages). Simply I have copied /etc/pam.d/passwd to /etc/pam.d/racoon and now all works as expected. Xen VMs: regular filesystem corruption

It seems that Xen VMs are subject to file system corruption under certain conditions. I find that often when I reboot or shutdown a VM the filesystem is corrupted after that and the VM no longer usable. The xm create then fails with some Python errors and an eventual Runtime Error: unable to read filesystem No handlers could be found for logger "xend". Error: boot loader didn't return any data. and I have to throw it away as there doesn't seem a way to fix that (or is there?). I use files for storing the VMs. There is enough space on the drive. The problem seems to happen when I reboot the machine from within itself, not each time, but almost each time. When I shut it down with CTRL+ALT+DEL or with the Shutdown button it doesn't seem to happen. I also find that sometimes a good VM will start up and crash early with a kernel panic, but start up just fine when I try a second or third time. Most often this happened after a new installation on the first reboot. Anyone else seen this or known how to fix that? finding mysql.h & errmsg.h on CentOS?

I am not sure how to modify the config.h script for my CentOS 4.5 box (running Nagios + NDOutils). NDOutils seem to compile fine (./configure && make), but I'm having problems when I try to run the final command in the README file. ********* problems *************************** ndo2db-2x -c /etc/nagios/ndo2db.cfg Support for the specified database server is either not yet supported, or was not found on your system. ************************************************ Someone else (http://tinyurl.com/2jnef8) suggested modding the config.h file in order to eliminate that command CHANGE #include <mysql/mysql.h> #include <mysql/errmsg.h> TO #include </usr/local/mysql/include/mysql/mysql.h> #include </usr/local/mysql/include/mysql/errmsg.h> However, when I looked for mysql.h (e.g. "locate mysql.h") I couldn't find find them (maybe b/c I installed from package?). What might I need to do in order to modify this script for CentOS so that ./configure will run properly and let me install this?

Safe method to remove old kernels

# rpm -qa | grep kernel-2 | sort kernel-2.6.9-42.0.10.EL kernel-2.6.9-42.0.2.EL kernel-2.6.9-42.0.3.EL kernel-2.6.9-42.0.8.EL kernel-2.6.9-42.EL kernel-2.6.9-55.0.2.EL kernel-2.6.9-55.0.6.EL kernel-2.6.9-55.0.9.EL kernel-2.6.9-55.EL I'm running the most recent kernel available, and I've never had a problem with any past kernels, so I don't believe there's any reason to keep all of them. I guess kernels get a fresh install instead of an upgrade? Can I safely rpm-e the old kernel packages? Should this be something I do through yum instead? Some of my CentOS servers have even more old kernels than this sample. Thanks, Scott

question(s) about LVM snapshots

I've recently begun to try out LVM snapshots and I have 2 things I'm wondering about My intention is to run backups off the snapshot. As a first iteration, I left 15% of the disk for the snapshot LV. 1. The HOWTO instructions suggest that the snapshot is in effect as long as the snapshot LV exists, and use lvremove to disable the snapshot. Is this the proper way? 2. I chose 15% because the disk is not that active and I think it will be plenty for the duration of the backup I'm doing. Is there a way to track how much space the snapshot is actually using? Can't get XFS enabled on Centos 5.0

I anm trying to enable XFS with no success. I followed the instructions provided in http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories/CentOSPlus I installed the new kernel. Example: 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5.centos.plus I also installed these packages as described in a post I found yum install --enablerepo=centosplus xfsprogs xfsprogs-devel lsmod shows nothing about XFS I would image there are others out there running XFS on Centos boxes. Could you please help. ps. Just joined the list(switching over from Fedora). I recognised the name Scott Silva from the Mailscanner list I also belong to. Small world. Where does he find the time?

Asus P5B-VM DO board?

Anyone had any success with or hints for a system based on the Asus P5B-VM DO board, or the Intel Q965 (with its associated Intel GMA 3000 VGA chip) in general? I had to put pci=nommconf in order to get the installer (CentOS 4.5) and the installed system to boot, but I can't get the graphics to work. RPMforge metadata problems

Hi, Yesterday evening I added a TIMESTAMP to the root of my tree in order to follow up on the correctness of mirrors. And after 12 hours more than 50% of the mirrors do not have that TIMESTAMP file. It is possible that it is filtered out, so the test is not at all valid. I am going to reduce the number of mirrors and only add the ones that have a recent TIMESTAMP. However since information on why this happens (or when this happens) is scarce, I am not sure if reducing the mirrorlist will be effective. How to enable my RAID again

Hi I have setup software RAID two years ago using FC3 using the graphical installer (RAID1). In the mean time I installed CENTOS4.5 and everything is running fine. At least that was my perception. The previous fedora installation is still around, but is doesn't contain a /etc/mdadm.conf file. Can anyone help me with some steps to take to get it running again. CentOS 5 LiveCD better than the real one?

Folks, I am terribly puzzled by an issue reported as bug 2381 [http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2381] definitely an upstream bug, as it does the same under X/OS 5 and StartCom 5. Simply put: Hibernation fails with horrendous I/O errors after swsusp starts dumping to swap. What bugs me is that hibernating from the CentOS 5 LiveCD *works*!!! (on the same hardware) How could I investigate to see what is the relevant difference between the LiveCD and the installed system, WRT suspend-to-disk? It has been said that "CentOS 5 i386 Live CD is based on the ADIOS Live CD Project", but also that "CentOS Project would like to thank Patrice Guay for the creation of this CD". Who is supposed to know better about this issue? Also, how could I check if upstream has a similar bug report? I don't have any RHN acct. It's a shame that RHEL5 && clones fail to work properly with a specific laptop (Acer Travelmate 5310/5320/5710/5720 have the same architectural design), but an ad-hoc LiveCD works! Is there a command line option on grep that says count ALL occurances on a line not just the first one??? echo "jerry jerry" | grep -c jerry only returns 1 and not 2. Looking at the man page I did not see anything like that. Thanks, Jerry

problems with "yum --enablerepo=centos upgrade" command

On CentOS 4.5, I'm trying to upgrade MySQL 4 to MySQL 5. (I enabled the RPMforge with the repository protection) rpm -qa | grep mysql gives me: mysql-4.1.20-2.RHEL4.1.0.1 mysql-server-4.1.20-2.RHEL4.1.0.1 But when I try to update yum --enablerepo=centosplus upgrade mysql-server I get Loading "priorities" plugin Setting up Upgrade Process Setting up repositories Reading repository metadata in from local files 484 packages excluded due to repository priority protections Could not find update match for mysql No Packages marked for Update/Obsoletion I suspect that something here has to do with this not upgrading properly? I'm looking to troubleshoot this error when I run "tail /etc/httpd/logs/error_log" [Tue Oct 09 07:22:59 2007] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Directory index forbidden by rule: /var/www/html/ (I get this when I run Nagios' "./check_http -H 127.0.0.1".) All I did was install CentOS and then modify httpd.conf to include "ServerName 192.168.1.10:80" and also run " htpasswd -c /etc/nagios/htpasswd.users nagiosadmin". Is this a permissions issue on my /var/www/html/ folder? I tried to get the Apache page to serve properly, and it's not doing that. And when I try from another computer, I don't see anything in the logs, which made me think it was an IPTABLES issue (which it doesn't appear to be). The guys from X/OS have released it for 5.0 along with the other updates (on Oct. 9). Are the "enhancements"... "not important" as long as they're not "security updates"? Kernel Update and Ultra Monkey

Hi, We currently have an CentOS 4.5 running Ultra Monkey box serving web requests to two real servers. Info as below : ipvsadm-1.24-6 heartbeat-2.1.2-3.el4.centos CentOS 4.5(kernel-smp-2.6.9-55.0.6.EL) All was working fine this morning until I upgraded our OS and patched the kernel to kernel-smp-2.6.9-55.0.9.EL via YUM(CESA-2007:0937). After that users started complaining that they were being switched from one real server to another ie sessions weren't sticking. Nothing has changed on the Ultra Monkey configuration. udp question

i all I use linux as GiGE router and have 6 NIC on it Those days the NIC interrupt takes around 100% CPU but the system is 4G memroy and 8 CPU. I can't see any error packet in this NIC interface too After I block the udp, the %CPU drops. but the UDP only takes around 8M in general We use UDP traffic for voice. How to export X displays

I have a CentOS server at home and want to view the X display on a laptop running Ubuntu, and not having much success. Here's what's been tried so far: I ran this command on the CentOS server: export DISPLAY=192.168.0.18:0.0 And ran this command on the Ubuntu laptop: xauth +192.168.0.2 When I try to run, say, xclock on the Ubuntu laptop, this is the error message I'm getting: [root@centos-ws ~]# xclock Error: Can't open display: 192.168.0.18:0.0 I'm assuming there's an important little detail I'm missing somewhere, but don't know what. Replacing failed software RAID drive

CentOS release 4.5 Hi All: First of all I will admit to being spoiled by my MegaRAID SCSI RAID controllers. When a drive fails on one of them I just replace the drive and carry on with out having to do anything else. I now find myself in the situation where I have a failed drive on a non-MegaRAID controller, specifically an Adaptec 29160 SCSI controller. The system is an Acer G700 with 8 internal hot-swappable SCSI drives arranged in two banks of 4 drives. Each bank is connected to a separate channel on the 29160 controller. When I installed CentOS 4 I enable software mirroring between the two banks so that I ended up with 4 pairs of mirrored drive (sda/sde, sdb/sdf, sdc/sdg, sdd/sdh). The problem I have now is that it is sda (the boot drive) that has failed. I have not encountered this problem before and therefore I need to make sure that I understand what I need to do before I start mucking around with things and dig myself into a deeper hole. I have spent much time attempting to research the problem but have not been able to come with any definite information to help. As far as I can see I have two options... Option 1: Leave the system running and replace the drive. Then either the RAID software will re-sync the drives or I can manually sync them with mdadm. I have not seen anything that will support this option but I am hoping that it is a valid option. Option 2: Create a boot disk (floppy or CD) that I can boot from but that points to sde (the boot mirror). Shutdown the system and replace the failed sda drive. Boot from the new boot disk. Format, partition and re-sync the new sda from sde. Shutdown, remove the boot disk, and reboot from the new sda. Can anyone confirm either of these options and point me in the right direction to any documentation that would assist me. Does anyone know if there is a fix for nscd segfaulting after a short period of time. Googling for it came up with one result that suggested deleting the files in /var/db/nscd , but that didn't help. Another result was about run away processes which is not the problem I'm having. CD emulation (a la daemontools)

I was wondering if anyone was aware of a method for mounting virtual CD devices with CD image files. I keep images (.CUE/.BIN pairs) of my CD collection on a NAS appliance tucked away in my closet. I'd like to write a script to mount each one, create ID tags, rip the tracks, then move along to the next one. I figure with a quad core opteron, it should be able to crank through them in a few days (it's a few thousand CD's worth of images). Anyone done this before with their trusty CentOS box? I'd be using CentOS 5. Best,

Thanks for the replies (and thanks Matt, PCI-e is indeed what I meant -brain freeze moment), I realise "linux dd" works -and is in fact how I've installed CentOS 5, but unfortunately I require a card (PCI even!) that will not require driver updates every kernel update and support a minimum of 6 ports in RAID 1. Being a noob at Linux I'm having trouble sourcing a card that is supported in the 2.6.18 kernel without the need to install drivers, and replies from manufacturers either evade the question or require a Masters degree in Linux, so I thought I'd tap into the combined knowledge of everyone here! So I'm still open to suggestions! ssh X11 forwarding not working

I'm having problems with ssh.com and X11 forwarding ssh: SSH Secure Shell 3.2.0 (non-commercial version) on i686-pc-linux-gnu I am in the process of testing some of my machines with CentOS 5 x86/x86_64 and have run into a bit of a snag. X11 Forwarding is not working. I've tried all combinations of (+/-)[Xx] and it doesn't work, seemingly it doesn't want to set the environment variable properly and therefore doesn't know where to send the X requests. Any hints? I've checked the ssh config files and they seem to be identical to the config files on our existing SuSE 10.0 machines which are working. This is troubling indeed. -- James A. NFS and Firewall

Hi Folks, I'm using VMWare on a Linux Host (CentOS) with a Linux-Guest Sidux). And I'd like to use NFS. Furthermore I'd like to use the Firewall in CentOS with this little GUI. If I activate this firewall then my Guest says "no route to host" on mounting nfs. Firewall disabled -> no problem occurs. Is there a solution to use firewall _and_ nfs ? Please, no iptables scripts. two internet connections questions

I have two internet connections. One is a partial T1 of data (and rest voice) the other is business cable. Both connections come into my office into (2) centos 5 boxs with 2 ethernet cards in each box. The second ethernet card is 192.168.1.59 and 192.168.1.1 respectively. I have all my DHCP settings setup for a gateway of 192.168.1.1 In the event that the internet connection is DOWN (box is fine just the cable modem is down) how do I set things up so I can take advantage of the second internet connection? Look for users in both LDAP and /etc/passwd

Im running CentOS 5 with samba configured as PDC, with samba 3.0.24 and openldap-servers-2.3.30-2. My /etc/nsswitch.conf is like this: passwd: files ldap shadow: files ldap group: files ldap The problem is when I try to restart LDAP (/etc/init.d/ldap restart) then the init script just hangs. I suppose it will try to run slapd as the ldap user The ldap user is not in LDAP only in /etc/passwd, how can i configure my system to look for users first in LDAP and then in /etc/passwd When I remove LDAP from my /etc/nsswitch.conf, so it looks like below passwd: files shadow: files group: files then ldap start up nicely, but then my LDAP users can't sign in I tried to do different changes in pam, but without any progress Please advice

I just upgraded one of my Tao boxes to Centos 3. The usual procedure is to do a yum update twice, and all is fine. This time, I had to rebuilddb before I could run the second yum update, and once I started this, yum fails. It says that $releasever is "1.0". Now I realize I could manually edit my yum.conf and make it go to 3, but this may not fix the problem down the road. Can someone tell me where this variable is defined, and any suggestions on how to fix this problem, please? Might a reinstall of yum packages fix this, as a last resort? Thanks very much. That seems to have worked. One other question. If a program is already running on the remote machine and you want to move the display to the local machine, can that be done? i.e. I have Thunderbird already running on the remote machine, and would like to move it to the local machine. Would that work? Or would it be necessary to kill the remote process and re-start it with the tunneled X session? Thanks, Paul

ot: vlans and vmware

Does anyone have VLAN tagging working from within a guest on vmware-server? I'm running a centos 4.5 guest on a centos 5 host with vmware server 1.04and I've tried creating vlans using both the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts method and just doing it from the cli via vconfig. Either way appears to work, the OS creates the vlans, but I think vmware's network adapter must be eating the tags or something, since the guest is not able to talk to the real vlan on the switch. On the host I setup vmnet3 to be bridged to eth1. I bring eth1 up on the host but don't configure it in anyway. Vmnet3 is configured as eth1 on the guest as well. If I create vlans on eth1 on the host, it is able to talk to corresponding vlans on the switch. I'm wondering if there's some trick to get it work or some configuration string needed in the vmx file? Right now I have the vlans setup on the host and then bridged to vmnetX adapters for the guests. But this is kind of messy since I have to take all my virtual machines down to change anything. Strange sound/browser problem on Centos5

I just did (the other day) a clean install of Centos 5 and am having a really weird problem that I never had before (on centos 4.5). when listening to nrk p2 (http://www.nrk.no/p2/) using Firefox, and when the small window for the player gets obscured by another window the sound stops playing. Move the obscuring window and it starts right up. I haven't yet been able to tell if it is paused, or if it is just silenced but still running. Hi dag! Thx for your reply! So, there will be no release in the near future of centos 5 for Z? At the moment we got a realy small z/linux installation, but i love it. Keeping the TCO as low as we can was necessary to satisfy the decision-maker. So we decided to choos a free linux distribution, centos was a good decicion we thougt. (redhat / fedora was always my favorite flavor *g*) It would be great if we can give something to the community! Personaly i can't help very much cause i'm the only knowledge carrier here for z/linux, with anoter colleague, and so we havent much time. How is development going on for centos on z and how can we help so i can talk with my head. Thx for reading! expand physical volume

Hi. I added a disk to a hardware raid 5 array and now i want to expand the LVM physical volume. There are now 4 sas 146GB disks in the server. The virtual disk /dev/sdb from the raid controller has been resized successfully with the server management software osma. [root@srv1 ~]# fdisk -l /dev/sdb Disk /dev/sdb: 438.4 GB, 438489317376 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 53309 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 1 35539 285466986 8e Linux LVM When i run "pvresize /dev/sdb1" the output tells me it has been resized, but actually the physical volume didn't expand to the partition size 438GB. forcing Y on yum upgrades

I'd like to be able to do a "yum upgrade" without having to hit Y each time. While "yum install -y [program]}" seems to work, "yum -y upgrade" doesn't seem to. Is there a way to easily do this?
