automounted filesystem appears empty on first reference

I have an odd automount problem. The first time I look in an automounted filesystem (when the mount is requested), it is empty; the second time it is not. Moreover, I only see this behavior on Centos 4.x systems, but not on Centos 5.0 systems going to the same fileserver. Here's an example, with some details simplified to clarify. In this example, fileserver1 is exporting fs1. centos4$ /bin/ls /mnt/fileserver1/fs1 # first time, directory looks empty centos4$ /bin/ls /mnt/fileserver1/fs1 # second time, I see the contents file1 dir2 I don't see this on Centos 5, which comes with a new (v5.x vs v4.x) version of automount: centos5$ /bin/ls /mnt/fileserver1/fs1 # I see the contents right away, on the first try file1 dir2 I watched the logs on fileserver1, and automount request is logged immediately after the first ls prints nothing. The automount maps are stored in ldap. The Centos4 and Centos5 systems are referencing the same maps. The entry in auto.master for fileserver1 (for cn=/mnt/fileserver1) is: ldap:ou=auto.fileserver1,ou=autofs,dc=example,dc=com --timeout=86400 --ghost -o rw,hard,async,noatime,intr,retrans=4,timeo=100,rsize=8192,wsize=8192 and in auto.fileserver1 is (for cn=*): fileserver1.example.com:/export/& At first I thought it had to do with the --ghost, but I took that out and adjusted things and still had the same problem. It is completely reproducible if I umount the automount between tries. Any idea what is causing this? I have been unable to find a similar-sounding problem, even with extensive Googling. Why does the first automount appear to be asynchronous, with some kind of race condition, and the second is synchronous? I even see a little hesitation on the centos5 box before ls prints the directory contents, so it appears to be waiting for the automount to complete. All the Centos 4 and Centos 5 boxes are current with "yum update". This problem is causing failures on some of our applications because they don't see their data the first time they run, when the automount occurs We see this across many boxes, and several fileservers (the fileservers are Fedora Core 5 and 6 machines, for stupid reasons). hi all!! i have som experince with xen in other distros, i never used xenmanager or interfaces do work with xen, im trying to install a centos5 guest , but i get always the same error "virDomainCreateLinux() failed", i have selinux disabled, no firewall, using mirror http://centos.oi.com.br/5.0/os/i386, using a file: for disk. Cross-platform GUI libraries with drag 'n drop IDEs

OS: CentOS 5.0 x86. I am a programmer, relatively new to GNU/Linux and am looking for cross platform GUI development, mainly for EL5 and Windows. I have found wxWidgets so far. I prefer drag 'n drop programming IDEs, QT seems to provide this for GNU/Linux, but it isn't free for Windows. Does anyone know of any decent GUI cross-platform library for EL5 and Windows with a drag 'n drop IDE? Thanks.

excluding directories in rsync

Hello Everyone, I am trying to exclude a directory (and all file and sub-directories under that directory) when using rsync. I have spent two days on google, but everything that I can find there involves excluding individual files, not an entire directory. Peculiar situation while build httpd-2.2.6 from provided spec

Hi all, While build a rpm from the httpd-2.2.6 sources (spec file included in the source package), i had a situation where packaging would fail at the step where several link are created for "logs" etc directories. <<..snip from httpd.spec...>> # symlinks for /etc/httpd ln -s ../..%{_localstatedir}/log/httpd $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/etc/httpd/logs ln -s ../..%{_localstatedir}/run $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/etc/httpd/run ln -s ../..%{_libdir}/httpd/modules $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/etc/httpd/modules ln -s ../..%{_libdir}/httpd/build $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/etc/httpd/build <<......>> It had me scratching my head for quite a while before figuring out that the %_sysconfdir macro wrongly gets translated to /usr/etc (should be /etc) Putting "%_sysconfdir /etc" in my .rpmmacros file did the trick and the package got built cleanly. Does this qualify as a bug? Anyone else faced the same problem? Regards. A.S.

External view in sample BIND named.conf

I just want to confirm that this is a "bug" before reporting it to Bugzilla. I started with the sample named.conf included in the distribution and found that I couldn't query my server from outside my LAN. I finally traced it down to the match expressions in the sample's external view. bind-9.3.3-9.0.1.el5 /usr/share/doc/bind-9.3.3/sample/etc/named.conf The view has these match settings: match-clients { !localnets; !localhost; }; match-destinations { !localnets; !localhost; }; Changing these to "any" allowed queries to get in. Is the ! syntax invalid for this version of BIND? I don't see anything in Buzilla that looks like this issue: <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/buglist.cgi?component=bind&order=bugs.bug_id>

PHP5/CentosPlus big mess.

Ok, so if you tuned in last time, I couldn't make the installation/upgrade of PHP5 from the Centos4 CentOS Plus repository work. Not one to be easilly dissuaded, I shapened my shovel and dug myself a hole. So using the exclude= lines in the repository config file backfired big time: even if I excluded the exclude= lines, yum continued to exclude the files on those lines, and only deigned to update three php files. Thus, my user complained that the mysql pieces were not there. So what I did was install CentOS 4 fresh into a VM, update it, then I just did a: # yum --enablerepo centosplus --exclude php-pecl-ssh2 --exclude php-eaccelerator --exclude php-pear-Image-GraphViz --exclude php-pear-PHPUnit2 install php php* (see the explanations for the --excludes on http://wiki.xdroop.com/space/CentOS/4/Updating+to+PHP+5) Please with my illusion of progress, I then copied the RPMs from the local cache to my target machine, and installed them with # rpm -Uvh --nodeps --replacefiles *rpm The --nodeps was because some other package not otherwise updated depended on the previous version of php-pear, and the --replacefiles was because rpm was complaining that some file owned by mysql-4 conflicted with the mysql-5 package even though it was going to be "upgraded". RPM package wish list

hello, Does our beloved Centos project have a page where one can request that an RPM package be built, especially for C5? How about alerts when those requests have been satisfied? I know about 3rd party repos like rpmforge, epel, and kbextras. I can search those in YUM. Centos seems to have specialized as a server OS in the past, but my experience is that it is an up and coming desktop/workstation OS too. Anaconda Partial Freeze...

Hey, I'm trying to run a kickstart script on a new piece of hardware... I've never used this HW before, so it's possible that there may be something faulty... After the DVD boots, I type "linux ks=http://blah/blah.ks" and hit enter. Once I get to the anaconda line which says "running /sbin/loader", the machine sits in a frozen state for a long time (3-5 minutes)... anyone have any clue what's going on here? Or at least how to debug it? It's too early to switch tot he other terminals, so I'm a little lost. I've tired testing the RAM and reseating, etc... nothing seems to works. - G.

Logwatch for postfix

On CentOS5 with the latest updates applied, the logwatch filter for postfix returns way too many lines from the log. I get an "unmatched entries" message and all messages that have gone through the system is listed. Here is an example: 8F930A8092: to=<morten(a)foo.bar>, orig_to=<morten@localhost>, relay=local, delay=0.19, delays=0.06/0.01/0/0.12, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered to command: /usr/bin/procmail) I have tried to look at the logwatch config and some google hits on similar problems but on debian. The hints there does not match what is relevant for CentOS. Anyone seen this problem on CentOS or is it some specific problem to my configuration? I use fetchmail/postfix/dovecot/procmail locally on the server to consolidate mail. Buggy SATA detection w/CentOS5 + Intel H6300ESB?

I've been handed a Supermicro system that is using the Intel® H6300ESB Serial ATA Controller (Supermicro P4SCI motherboard). When I install CentOS5, everything seems to work OK, but it has absolutely horrid disk performance. Upon further inspection, it seems that the SATA disks are being treated as legacy IDE devices using PIO. Gah.... Has anyone else had this problem? I recall having similar problems last year sometime with some Supermicro systems, but I can't seem to remember how I fixed it. :-) Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Best,

change md uuid?

I sometimes clone working machines by separating RAID1 mirrors and letting each re-sync with a new partner in different machines. What will happen if a mismatched pair of these drives ever end up together in the same machine? rootpw and graphical mode?

Is there some kind of caveat to using the rootpw --iscrypted directive and then specifying a graphical install? I always seem to get the prompt coming up... If I remove the graphical and do a text install, it works fine and if I remove the --iscrypted and put a plain-text password in there, it works as well. Any suggestions? - G

Printing multiple copies in Cups

Permissions question

My www directory is owned by "apache" and the group is "todd" and the permissions are 775. My Windows computers use Samba and they log into Linux with "todd". Under the www directory there are various directories which may have a group belonging to a user e.g. "viewpoint". Using this example, there is a directory under www (acutally called httpd), "viewpoint" that is owned by "apache" and is a member of the "viewpoint" group. "todd" is also a member of the "viewpoint" group. Now this is the problem I do not know how to correct: if "todd" using Samba creates a directory in "viewpoint", the owner and group is "todd" with 755 permissions. Now if the "viewpoint" user tries to write to the directory, he does not have adequate permissions. Maybe I have not setup the owners and groups correctly. maybe there is something I need to do with how Samba interacts with the server. Any suggestions will be appreciated... X login screen fails on the first try

I set up a Centos 5 machine a couple of weeks ago and everything was working perfectly. It survived a few reboots and whatnot with no problem. I moved it to another location on Saturday afternoon and, again, it booted up and worked fine. It was rebooted this morning and now the graphical login screen doesn't appear. Everything appears to load normally but once the text login screen appears, that's it. No graphical login screen. If I log in at the text console and type startx I am told that X is already running. If I hit ctrl-alt-f7 at the text login screen I see a completely blank/black screen. If I then hit ctrl-alt-esc the graphical login screen comes up and everything works as it should. If I switch to runlevel 3 and log into the text console and type startx, my desktop shows up just as it should. There are no errors that I can see in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Again, this all worked fine up until this morning and nothing changed. Today I rebooted it several times and I consistently get the behaviour detailed here. Sound problems on envidia 6510 in Compaq SR5110NX

I've go a Compaq Presario (SR5110NX) that I've loaded CentOS 5 on and all is well except for the sound card. I understand that OSS supports the chipset but it's not being detected an loaded properly and I've invested a significant amount of time already. I've probably got an old supported card lying around here somewhere but I hat to give up on the principal. I would rather not download the proprietary drivers as that will create a dependency when the kernel is upgraded and I'm shipping this off to a remote law office where I'd like them to be a little more self sufficient than having to have me log in and recompile each time they upgrade a kernel. Any experience or advise with this would be appreciated. Regards, Chuck

Centos5-live kernel panic?

I am fairly sure that I had gotten this to work before, and I know that the Centos4-live disk worked OK, but now (maybe since I upgraded BIOS) I get this sequence after booting the live cd: Creating /var in RAM ... Done Found Centos-live.sqfs but couldn't mount it: Linking /usr to /centos-live/usr /linuxrc: 1208: [: not found Freeing unused kernel memory: 296K freed Write protecting the kernel read-only data: 684K Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found Try passing init= option to kernel So far I: 1. checked md5 of downloaded .iso 2. burned another copy of CD w/ verify after burn using KD3 3. tried CD in a VMWare machine, and it boots up fine 4. tried failsafe boot option I am guessing that the problem goes back to the "Found centos-live.spfs but couldn't mount it" line, as this mounts OK on the VMWare machine. In case the hardware layout is confusing it, and I really do need to pass an init argument to it, my layout is: IDE 0 Master: None Slave: CD drive IDE 1 Master: CD drive Slave: hdd (windows 2000 boot) IDE 2 (SATA): sda IDE 3 (SATA): sdb IDE 4 (SATA): sdc MB is Gigabyte K8N Ultra 9 nVidia NForce 4 chipset F9c BIOS version AMD64 processor 1gb RAM Glad to supply other info if you tell me what you need and where to find it. Dear all Salam!!! i am using php+mysql for jffnms. i installed php myadmin for mysql administration. after login to phpmyadmin it says mbstring missing..... i search the yum has php-mbstring.... but when i install it using yum it says: php 4.3.9 update php-snmp update My question is if install php-mbstring, will php be effected and shows abnormal behaviour to jffnms???? Help with Dell Latitude, CentOS 5, and intel 3945abg wireless

I've visited several web pages, including Dell's, for help in getting the wireless card activated. lspci shows it, but iwconfig doesn't list it. I also visited linux.dell.com and downloaded and installed the 64-bit Fedora 7 RPMs, but couldn't get anywhere. dellwirelessctl also doesn't show up anywhere. I'm running a fully updated kernel/distro. What am I missing? Thanks. Scott

I have installed OOo 2.3 on CentOS-5. Everything seems to work but I had to locate the item reproduced below. Since this is a vital modification I reproduce it here so that it gets a wider audience. FYI: OOo 2.3.0 and SELinux: "no suitable windowing system found, exiting." OpenOffice.org (OOo) 2.3.0 is incompatible with the SELinux technology activated by default in Fedora 7, Fedora Core 6 (and older) and Red Hat Linux system (and, optionally, in other Linux-based systems): see http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=80816 for more information and current situation. Symptoms: * If OpenOffice.org is started from the GUI, it simply doesn't start. * If OpenOffice.org is started from the command line, the error message no suitable windowing system found, exiting. is displayed and OpenOffice.org exists immediately. The best resolution so far consists in setting the proper security context: execute (as root or with sudo privileges) # chcon -t textrel_shlib_t libvclplug_gen680li.so.1.1 in the program directory in your OOo installation. A more radical resolution is disabling SELinux altogether (requires root/sudo privileges): * Command line (as root): # setenforce 0 * GUI: System -> Administration -> Firewall and SELinux -> set "Permissive" mode. Note that, with the default configuration, SELinux will be restored in "Enforcing" mode upon reboot or instalaltion of a new kernel if you change it via the command-line utility. Hello! I just joined this mailing list a couple of minutes ago. I'll start to use CentOS for academic purposes. We'll try to build a cluster based in machines with this OS. First of all, I'd like to beg you for patience, because I'm comple- tly new in Linux. My first question is: every tutorial on installation talks about inserting an installation CD, but I'm not sure about what do it means... I've downloaded the four files .iso availabe in CentOS.org, but I don't know what to do with them. Should I burn this files into de CD the way they are? Should I unzip them before this? Details: I'm using Windows, trying to install CentOS 4 in a 32 bit's PC. I've downloaded CentOS-4.5-i386-bin.......iso. Thank you for any help! ~ J. Unable to boot xen dom0 on IBM System x3250

I have an IBM System x 3250 that successfully boots using the standard kernel (2.6.18-8.1.10.el5) but fails to boot with the xen kernel. The kernel appears to fail when it attempts to initialize the driver for the onboard SAS controller (LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1064E PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS). Can anyone provide any advice? Here's the relevant info. Please let me know if any other information would be helpful. too many links error when creating directories

hi , our centos os has an ext3 file system. and i cant create any more directories, it gives me a too many links error, even when doing a manual mkdir. is there any workaround for this? without changing it to a different file system like reiserFS? we dont have a reiserfs module in the os so it will have to be installed. and can it be possible to install a reiserFS without having to reformat the os? just mount it after installing? please advise

hostname not being picked up by DHCP

Hi - I am using the CentOS v5 desktop installation and am setting up a new lab for our engineering department. Initially I computers got their IP addresses and computer names from the DHCP process and the computer were getting the info from the dynamic pool. These name would be d-23-76.mnsu.edu, where the d stood for dynamic and 23-76 refered the IP address of xx.xx.23.76. The computer hostname would show up as d-23-76. I did not want the computers to get different IP address so I put the computers onto our DHCP table as manual DHCP clients by assigning a name and mac address to an IP address. Now the computers get the correct IP address but the hostname is localhost. Hi, Please respond privately as this is o.t. I'm looking for individuals experienced in plesk management. I'm getting an error running plesk 8.2, it was working before an upgrade. Logging in to plesk individual clients are able to be backed up, but when atempting to back up an entire domain an error about agent-runner not being able to establish a connection is given, connection refused. I've restarted the psa service and confirmed it is running. Thanks. Dave.

glibc errors related to nss_ldap or pam_ldap?

I am trying to track down the cause of some errors that have been occurring on a number of our servers using LDAP. We have noticed that when a certain LDAP group exceeds 65 users we begin seeing glibc errors for users in the group. Users that are not in the group do not exhibit this behavior. We have seen this issue on machines running Centos 4.5 x86 & x86_64 with glibc-2.3.4-2.36 and RH4 x86_64 running glibc-2.3.4-2.25. We are running Fedora Directory Server 1.0.4 on Centos 4.5. We have added a 3rd FDS slave and turned up debugging but have not seen anything that appears to be relevant in the logs on the 3rd slave. This problem is not a 65 user limit as we have other groups with well over 65 members that do not display this behavior. CentOS-5 - Suffering from LDAP experimentation

I was playing aeound with the GUI authentication configuration and was called away from my desk after I had configured the LDAP DC entries but before I had tried to start the ldap server or do much of anything else. When I returned the terminal session was screen-saver locked and entering my user password did not make it respond. I kept getting a time-out error. Rebooting took forever and was delayed for long periods at two points that I do not recall as being problems before; Loading IPtablesv6? and Starting system message bus. More importantly the user GUI takes forever to start. I am seeing these entries in the /var/log/merssages filr (vis ssh login through another system.): Sep 27 15:37:13 inet02 perl: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://127.0.0.1: Can't contact LDAP server Sep 27 15:37:13 inet02 perl: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 8 seconds)... Sep 27 15:43:26 inet02 gdm[3483]: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://127.0.0.1: Can't contact LDAP server Sep 27 15:43:26 inet02 gdm[3483]: nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server - Server is unavailable So, how do I undo whateever it is I borked when I experimented with LDAP? Waking up X

I just finished installing CentOS 5 (again)... and I'm having trouble with my X config (I _think_). If I 'startx' then switch to a console (using CTRL+ALT+F*) and then back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7), 1/2 the time it comes back, the other half I get a black screen and I can never recover the session. X is still running (CTRL+ALT+Backspace kills it) but there seems to be some type of power saving or screensaver that kicks in and won't let the session restore... Any hints on where to look? The X logs don't _seem_ to show anything... - G.
