NIS probs - Login and no home dir -help

I'm trying to configure two things on my RH 5 server with dual-boot CentOS 5 (out-of-box) and Windows XP w/SP2 (fully patched) clients: - NIS/NFS: I have managed to get user logins, but all accounts produce Can't Find Home Directory, Using Root! The error logs, when trying to mount any NFS directory, is the server claims permission denied. I've reviewed many web pages and reviewed my config files carefully. Just a matter of finding the winning config. Firewall and SELinux are disabled, and the machines have been rebooted many times. - Samba: Ideally, I think if I can get NIS/NFS working fine, it would make sense that when Windows users log in (I've gotten samba to permit the XP systems to be added to samba with samba acting as the PDC), they log into their UNIX accounts. But, upon attempted login, Windows produces the famed small alert window saying Roaming Profiles cannot be located, Windows is creating a temporary environment that will not be saved upon logout. What is the magical Samba config/line to permit Samba/domain logins to read from the server's UNIX side and give the Windows domain user their UNIX home directory for login, and have their UNIX home directory as a mapped drive (effectively their roaming profile)? centos5 iptables expert needed

Hello, I'm setting up a centos5 router for a friend. It will direct traffic to an internal webserver, already in place, as well as run squid proxy. It should do nat and have a firewall with iptables. I've set up routers before for this purpose but always of the bsd type and using their firewalls. I understand the concepts, nat, packet filtering, etc. but i'm not getting iptales at all. If anyone is an expert on this i'd appreciate hearing from you. I have what are probably basic questions, i've read the docs, but i am lost. Thanks. Dave.

Hi, Any one would like to suggest an tool for large-sacle multiple-networks, multiple-views DNS zone files automatic generation? The DNS configuration tool comes with Centos 5 distribution, system-config-bind, looks like more improvment is in need; I've come upon a tool h2n, which create zone files from a static hosts file, looks like better. But I don't know pupular the h2n perl script is in use, and whether there are any other better/modern tool(s) to begin with. Any one can shed a light on this topic? CentOS 4.5: Automounted USB disks eventually stop appearing on desktop

This is just a minor annoyance, but I wondered if anyone has any insights. When I first boot the system and log in to Gnome, and then plug in e.g. a USB stick or compact flash card, I get an icon for it on the desktop. I can right-click on this icon to "eject" the filesystem, etc. Eventually, though, for no obvious reason, this stops working and I no longer get an icon when I insert a USB device. The automount is still happening; I can still navigate to the device under /media with Nautilus, and I can still umount it from a shell as a nonprivileged user. What process is supposed to be noticing the new mount and adding the icon? Any clues as to why it would stop doing so?

Can't print from Firefox

Hi, I've just installed CentOS 5.0 on my father's laptop, in replacement of Windows XP. Everything runs fine, except I can't seem to print from Firefox. So far, I can print a test page from the CUPS interface (as root). As user, printing works fine from applications such as GEdit or OpenOffice.org Writer. But I can't print anything from Firefox. CentOS/RH 5 Samba as PDC+NIS w/o LDAP?

For those who are new or forget - I have a RHEL 5 Server and a few dualboot XP w/SP2 and CentOS 5 systems. The Linux machines were installed straight of CD/DVD, no patches. I was initially going to try a single sign-on to the RH 5 box via LDAP, but RH says it simply isn't possible and I don't know my way around LDAP other than it is a database and exists. So, option 2 is to simply have the RH 5 Server act as a Windows PDC via Samba and use NIS to enable users to log in, all the while, in either situation, having the RH 5 box serve out the user's central home directory - mounted as a drive letter under Windows, or exported under Linux. I've spent much of last week and much of today [trying to learn] LDAP, and today, finally deciding to dump that, but proceeding with Samba as a PDC. For Samba as a PDC - what is the best way to have Win XP Pro w/SP2 successfully authenticate to Samba as a domain controller with encyrpted passwords? And, to have Samba establish the user's home directory as a mapped drive? I've used a barrage of web sites showing various smb.conf confing files but can't yet get my test XP machine to authenticate to the domain I set in my smb.conf file. For NIS - what is the best way to permit the user to log into their account, created on RH 5 server, and have their home directory exported to their workstation? I presume there will be no problem with users simultaneously logging into multiple workstations, be it Linux or Windows? I only bother the list because I have scoured so many web sites, some with a variety of options, I believe I'll get the best answer here. Thanks. Scott

Creating your own CA and SSL certificates

I've been looking all over (google, wiki, manuals) for docs, and I can't find any mention of how to set up a CA or certificates *specifically for centos 5 / upstream 5*. There are plenty of generic guides on using openssl for this sort of thing, but I'd like to play nice within the standard structure of this system. I've found the /etc/pki directory, but can't find much information about it. I reviewed the openssl.cnf file, and it looks like it's not completely set up, as many directories it references do not exist on the system. What I'm looking to do is set up my own CA, then make some certificates for use with SSL, and sign them with the CA. This will be used for internal purposes. Any pointers to guides or information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Kernel parameter "pci=nommconf" "nophet"

Hi list I am installing a couple IBM System x3650. IBM Support advises to put "pci=nommconf" and "nophet" at installation prompt and later in grub.conf. But what those parameters do? Strange behavior from OO Writer

I just had the strangest experience I can remember since I ran Windowsas my base OS.... Yesterday I was editing a file in the OO Writer (word processor). Today, it will not open. I copied it to a new file, and it opened fine. I edited it, updated it and closed it. Then I tried deleting the original file and copying the new one to the old name. Won't open. Renamed again, and it opens fine. WTF???? Does OO and/or the writer have name prejudices that develop? Thanks. mhr

Xen VM vanishes after creation

Just starting and playing around with Xen on Centos 5. I created a new VM (para-virtualized) with the Virtual Machine Manager, installed Centos 5 minimal on it, rebooted after successful installation. The VM console vanishes on shutdown and that's it. The VM id vanishes from the VM Manager and there's no way to get it back. It looks like the new VM doesn't exist. xm list shows only Domain-0, virsh list --all tells me that it cannot list the inactive domains. A restore from the VM file fails as well. The VM image file exists (in /home/vm), a config file for it in /etc/xen exists. But I don't see where the path to the image file might have been saved. Maybe that's the problem? (I know the location can create a problem with SELinux, but I'm currently running permissive and only testing.) Getting info on hardware RAID

Hello everyone, I'm doing an audit of all our servers here (there aren't that many maybe around 5-10) and one of the things I'm doing is taking note of each server's hardware specs (processor, memory, etc). I can't seem to figure out how to get the information for the hard drives. The drives are in a hardware RAID5 array and are all SCSI types. I would like to get each physical SCSI drive's specifications (like, disk capacity). Also, we have another server that also uses Hardware RAID and there's a RAID5 and a RAID1 array in there and I would also like to get as much information as I have on them. How do I get this information from the console? Is this possible? I don't have physical access to the servers and can only log in remotely. Thanks, Matt -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Hello everyone, Although we use CentOS primarily on our servers, this query is actually more of a general networking question than something specific to CentOS. In the next week or so, we shall be migrating our in-house servers to a data center. While we're doing that, we'd like to show a "Site down for maintenance" message while the servers that hosts our websites (we have around 15 sites hosted btw), are down. So, how is this accomplished? While I can probably hack something on our name servers, I'm sure there are people on this list that have been doing this and could give some recommendations as to the best practices for this type of task. NX on 4.5 vs 5.0

NX connections to my 4.5 server give "cramped" looking fonts (as if the resolution were wrong). Connections to my 5.0 server look great regardless of the resolution. Both use GNOME. Is there anything I can do to the 4.5 servers to increase the quality of the NX connections? Thanks, Scott

How can I avoid this?

adding x to an existing system

Hello, I've got a centos5 box that originally did not have x on it as it was headless. It's purpose has now changed and x is now needed. I'd like to install it and gnome preferably without having to reinstall the os to get the ease of install, it just works when anaconda does it, is this doable? Thanks. Dave.

Single sign-on help requested

I have a RHEL5 Server and some dual-boot XP/CentOS 5 systems (Linux systems all 64-bit). All Linux is out-of-box, with all packages, minus international languages, installed. No patching has been done. On the server, I selected system-config-authentication and enabled LDAP for User Information, Kerberos, LDAP, and SMB for Authentication, and Shadow and MD5 Passwords, along with Authenticate system accounts by network services for Options. All machines are on an isolated LAN, with no DNS server (I could always enable and configure DNS on the server if it helps the cause). I also don't know if it matters, but the server is running the virtualization kernel (xen), but the clients are not. I only have LDAP service enabled on the server. Kerberos services are enabled on both client and server. I tweaked the LDAP and Kerberos settings using the CentOS/RH GUIs, and have the clients looking to the RH box for authentication. I also have the firewall enabled, but am letting kerberos and ldap ports through as tcp. During a login test, /var/log/messages on the client showed: lin1 gdm[pid]: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://192.168.1.100: Can't contact LDAP server lin1 gdm[pid]: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 32 seconds)... lin1 dbus-daemon: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://192.168.1.100: Can't contact LDAP server lin1 dbus-daemon: dss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server... lin1 xfs: ... During boot time, Starting system message bus: [long pause] then error messages about DB_CONFIG and /var/lib/ldap, the usual cannot find DB_CONFIG in /var/lib/ldap, showing the example.com instead of my customized ldap settings, etc. I've checked openldap.org, but I figured if the configuration appears to be simplified via an included GUI, I shouldn't have much trouble gettigns things going. Anyway, what am I missing? Anything special RH 5 is doing compared to the openldap docs? Both servers have been rebooted since adding the respective ports in the firewall. The goal is a to permit my test user, created on the server, to sit at a workstation, boot into either Linux or XP, and get their home directory. Ideally, the server only needs to consist of one account for them, which they get upon login on the workstation. I want to highly restrict _any_ third-party tools/apps/etc. I will be happy to take suggestions and leads, but I want to try and rely on what RH has provided. Thanks for any insight/help. Scott

UTC vs local time

Samba and Scalix

I'm hoping to integrate a shared folder(s) so that we may be able to drag and drop files from various OSs into a shared folder on a CentOS server which can be accessed via Scalix SWA or some other email client. Maybe I'm totally off base with how Scalix stores files in public folders... maybe everything has to be in mbox format for all folders and this could never work..... Anyway, I started thinking about Samba and Scalix in combination and was wondering if anybody knew of a way to perhaps use the combination to do what I want? Anybody here know when there is going to be an update for the cluster packages for the 2.6.9-55.0.2 kernel that was released in June? The packages available from the repo are compiled against 2.6.8-55. I want to update my GFS cluster to CentOS 4.5, but I don't want to do such a major upgrade and leave out the kernel packages. -- Bowie

NFSv4 on CentOS 4.5

Hi. I'm having trouble accessing a shared directory over NFSv4 on a CentOS 4.5 machine. My export file reads /test 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0(ro,async,insecure,nohide,no_subtree_check) Running the mount command with NFSv4 as the filesystem gives me a permission denied error. [root@pebble-anoop ~]# mount -v -t nfs4 pebble-anoop:/test/ /mnt/ mount: pinging: prog 100003 vers 4 prot tcp port 2049 mount: permission denied I've also tried to include the fsid=0 argument in my /etc/exports file. That gives me a whole different error [root@pebble-anoop ~]# mount -v -t nfs4 pebble-anoop:/test/ /mnt/ mount: pinging: prog 100003 vers 4 prot tcp port 2049 mount: special device pebble-anoop:/test/ does not exist Also, the parameter root_squash or no_root_squash don't make any difference whatsoever. Any ideas how I can solve this? It is imperative that I use NFSv4. NFSv3 won't do. Thanks. -anoop

Hi Guys, I am polling my 'guru' resources to find out if I can get in touch with anyone (UK based, ideally) with support experience of the THEOS operating system. We have one group of sites running a legacy system based on THEOS - an OS that seems to have 'borrowed' the best parts of DOS, VMS, *NIX and Netware. We are migrating some remote sites from Wyse Terminals, serial port muxes and Kilostream (which is costing us an arm and a leg) to PC clients over broadband. We have put the clients in place (desktop PCs with a client app - easy) but need to understand how complex it is to setup the remote printing - the support company involved reckons it's *so* complex they need to send an engineer to each site (3 sites, 2 printers on each) and it will take 2 days + travel + accommodation just to make the printers work! We have remote access to all the client PCs + routers etc. so I want to get some insight into what exactly is involved. Any takers? Thanks

Hot swap SATA?

Should it be possible to hot-swap SATA drives with Centos5? It doesn't seem to work on my system. Removing an unmounted drive locked the system up, and leaving one out at bootup makes the devices change names and keeps grub from finding /boot on a scsi drive that is shifted up. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

I downoaded flash9 for linux. Installed it: ls /usr/lib64/mozilla-seamonkey-1.0.9/plugins/ flashplayer.xpt libflashplayer.so libnullplugin.so However seamonkey is not doing flash yet. Does it not work in 64 bit? Did I miss something? Anyone else have flash going on amd64? I thought you put the files in the above directory and restart. Didn't work for me. Jerry

BIND issues, server not responding

Hi all, My CentOS 5 nameserver is seemingly unable to be queried by anything but itself (localhost, 127.0.0.1). From any other machine, including the primary which *does* transfer zone files correctly to this machine (which is secondary), requests time out. I've put SELinux into permissive mode, so I don't think that's an issue. /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf begins thus: ===================================== options { directory "/var/named/slaves"; listen-on { localhost; 127.0.0.1; 64.135.16.15; }; }; ===================================== I've placed a copy of resolv.conf in /etc/ as well as /var/named/chroot/etc as a result of seeing this message in /var/log/messages (the file in /etc/ had been a symlink to the file in the chrooted path before this) Aug 22 13:10:06 sunspot restorecond: Will not restore a file with more than one hard link (/etc/resolv.conf) No such file or directory /etc/init.d/named status returns: [root@sunspot etc]# /etc/init.d/named status number of zones: 172 debug level: 0 xfers running: 0 xfers deferred: 0 soa queries in progress: 0 query logging is OFF recursive clients: 0/1000 tcp clients: 0/100 server is up and running So....while I'm sure it's simple, I'm stumped.
