Anybody here know when there is going to be an update for the cluster packages for the 2.6.9-55.0.2 kernel that was released in June? The packages available from the repo are compiled against 2.6.8-55. I want to update my GFS cluster to CentOS 4.5, but I don't want to do such a major upgrade and leave out the kernel packages. -- Bowie

NFSv4 on CentOS 4.5

Hi. I'm having trouble accessing a shared directory over NFSv4 on a CentOS 4.5 machine. My export file reads /test 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0(ro,async,insecure,nohide,no_subtree_check) Running the mount command with NFSv4 as the filesystem gives me a permission denied error. [root@pebble-anoop ~]# mount -v -t nfs4 pebble-anoop:/test/ /mnt/ mount: pinging: prog 100003 vers 4 prot tcp port 2049 mount: permission denied I've also tried to include the fsid=0 argument in my /etc/exports file. That gives me a whole different error [root@pebble-anoop ~]# mount -v -t nfs4 pebble-anoop:/test/ /mnt/ mount: pinging: prog 100003 vers 4 prot tcp port 2049 mount: special device pebble-anoop:/test/ does not exist Also, the parameter root_squash or no_root_squash don't make any difference whatsoever. Any ideas how I can solve this? It is imperative that I use NFSv4. NFSv3 won't do. Thanks. -anoop

Hi Guys, I am polling my 'guru' resources to find out if I can get in touch with anyone (UK based, ideally) with support experience of the THEOS operating system. We have one group of sites running a legacy system based on THEOS - an OS that seems to have 'borrowed' the best parts of DOS, VMS, *NIX and Netware. We are migrating some remote sites from Wyse Terminals, serial port muxes and Kilostream (which is costing us an arm and a leg) to PC clients over broadband. We have put the clients in place (desktop PCs with a client app - easy) but need to understand how complex it is to setup the remote printing - the support company involved reckons it's *so* complex they need to send an engineer to each site (3 sites, 2 printers on each) and it will take 2 days + travel + accommodation just to make the printers work! We have remote access to all the client PCs + routers etc. so I want to get some insight into what exactly is involved. Any takers? Thanks

Hot swap SATA?

Should it be possible to hot-swap SATA drives with Centos5? It doesn't seem to work on my system. Removing an unmounted drive locked the system up, and leaving one out at bootup makes the devices change names and keeps grub from finding /boot on a scsi drive that is shifted up. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

I downoaded flash9 for linux. Installed it: ls /usr/lib64/mozilla-seamonkey-1.0.9/plugins/ flashplayer.xpt libflashplayer.so libnullplugin.so However seamonkey is not doing flash yet. Does it not work in 64 bit? Did I miss something? Anyone else have flash going on amd64? I thought you put the files in the above directory and restart. Didn't work for me. Jerry

BIND issues, server not responding

Hi all, My CentOS 5 nameserver is seemingly unable to be queried by anything but itself (localhost, 127.0.0.1). From any other machine, including the primary which *does* transfer zone files correctly to this machine (which is secondary), requests time out. I've put SELinux into permissive mode, so I don't think that's an issue. /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf begins thus: ===================================== options { directory "/var/named/slaves"; listen-on { localhost; 127.0.0.1; 64.135.16.15; }; }; ===================================== I've placed a copy of resolv.conf in /etc/ as well as /var/named/chroot/etc as a result of seeing this message in /var/log/messages (the file in /etc/ had been a symlink to the file in the chrooted path before this) Aug 22 13:10:06 sunspot restorecond: Will not restore a file with more than one hard link (/etc/resolv.conf) No such file or directory /etc/init.d/named status returns: [root@sunspot etc]# /etc/init.d/named status number of zones: 172 debug level: 0 xfers running: 0 xfers deferred: 0 soa queries in progress: 0 query logging is OFF recursive clients: 0/1000 tcp clients: 0/100 server is up and running So....while I'm sure it's simple, I'm stumped. Help with backups

I've got a Redhat 5 server running Samba, and two dualboot CentOS 5 workstations. Until we get a better backup strategy, I'm backing up the workstations to the server via mounting a shared samba drive to /mnt. Trying tar cvf /mnt/samba_share/backup.tar /* eventually yields backing up /mnt, which produces an unwanted loop, including /mnt/samba_share I looked at tar with --exclude /mnt but didn't seem to get the results I wanted. I tried dump, which looked like it was working, but I have no idea what files it was backing up, and couldn't find an option in the man page to have it show me the files. I would have let it go, but since I couldn't be sure about /mnt recusion, I opted out of it. I ended up, for now, tarring each top-level directory to its own tar file, except, of course, for /mnt. What do people suggest? Thanks. Scott

SATA vs. SAS

I have 8 WD SATA HDD with raid ready (3mbps) hard disks on a 8 port 3ware controller.(on raid 5.) Does anyone have a comparison on SATA raid and SAS raid disk. As you know SAS disk are very expensive and I would like to know from experts in the list who could suggest which of the following would be the best. Option 1) 2 servers each having 2.0TB raid disk with SAS drives, 2GB ram and standard other features. Option 2) 4 No servers with 1TB each with 2GB ram and standard other features. If Data files (mostly AutoCAD Drawings of size 5MB to 50MB) are distributed as per the above options do you think which could perform better?. As you know the price of SATA disk is much cheaper than the SAS disk and we could nearly by 4 servers for that money. Probability work disturbed by a server crash is low in the second case but I am not sure about the comparison on performance. I would appreciate if you could spread some thought in this regards, and apologize if this is out of topic. Best regards, Rajeev

New server is not discovering USB drive attachment

Just built a Centos 5 system last night that will be a NAS server. I have a bunch of notebook drives with information I want to populate the NAS with. I am logged in as root. I plug in the USB notebook drive device and nothing. My notebook has no trouble with this device. Obliviously I missed something in the install. autofs is reported as running, so not that.

10+ TB RAID experiences?

I'm looking for RAID options for at least 10 TB to attach to a Dell PowerEdge 2950 running RHEL 5 64-bit Server. The system will act as a single sign-on server for XP and Linux, thus storing user's data from mounted home directories exported from the server to various workstations. It may also house a database. I'll need a storage solution starting at least 10 TB. Most of the SAS devices I've seen go up to 2 TB. Looking at the IBM System Storage devices, for example, they offer 12 TB and up. I'm not sure of the budget, so I'll discount cost for now. How good are IBM's rack RAID devices? I'm just looking at their System Storage DS4xxx line. How about EMC? Network Appliance? Clariion? Quality of unit, reliability of unit andservice and support, overall cost of ownership? Expandability? Thanks for any and all insights. Scott

How do I get kudzu to still look for new equipment but stop checking to see if some devices are present or not? For example. I have an ATEN USB keyboard/mouse adapter. Sometimes at boot, it is not ready? or something and then kudzu asks if I want that in or not. Of course I want it in!!! I may have to unplug and plug it back in, but don't bother me. I have a similar challenge with the USB ethernet dongle....

rpm command freezing

Howdy, If ever somebody here might have encountered this, the rpm -qa commands just stuck for ages on my box ( honestly this is rhel 3 box). I done rebuilding already the /var/lib/rpm/__db* as per KB article but to no avail. Any additional hints what's to look for? CentOS v4.5 and Intel 965/G33BY chipsets - PATA support

Greetings CentOS users, I have run into a hardware issue with the Intel 965 chipset. It appears that the latest kernel doesn't support the Marvell PATA controller. I can kickstart the computer, but after the OS is installed the DVD drive can't be accessed. There are patches against 2.6.18 for the Marvell PATA controller here: http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/10/16/157 There is bug report ported for RHEL 5.0 and I assume this will apply to CentOS 5 also. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=237372 What are my options other that to try to patch the current kernel (2.6.9-55.0.2.EL) ? Solved: HTTP user directory permissions - Centos 5 post-install

The problem was permissions on /home/user not /home/user/public_html I have not spent the time looking into details, but I booted up the old server (fortunately I had not blown away the drive content yet), and looked at all the directory tree. The permissions for /home/user was drwx--x--x The user that I was using on the new system was the one created by the post-install, first boot process. Its permissions were: drwx------ Other users that I created with drwxx-rx-r So I changed the new system's user directory permissions to match that of the old system, and everything is working. Just one more footnote about installing a new Centos 5 system, check the user directory permissions.

Drivers build easily on CentOS. Just make sure you get drives that are on their compatible list. This may not be as much of an issue now, but I had some problems with drives being marked bad and dropped out of the array when I first set up mine a couple of years ago. This was caused by firmware incompatibilities and fixed by upgrading the drive firmware. Once this was fixed, everything has worked flawlessly since. -- Bowie

Force run of quotacheck at boot

Hi All, I think I have managed to corrupt my quota files so I need to run `quotacheck` but that needs the partition to have quotas off or be unmounted which isn't ideal for a production system :-p I was trying to find a way to force the system to do a full `quotacheck -cvuga` on a reboot but on looking in rc.sysinit it seems it will only force a quotacheck on boot when fsck finds problems with the disk. Anyone know of a way to force this (touch a file etc.)? Thank you in advance Dan

I have a centos 5 server running on olidata tegeo server with 2 opteron 1800 and 8GB ram. I installed centos 32bit so I should be able to use 4GB. My system on boot recognize 4GB ram but allocate only 2GB. Extract from dmesg: Warning only 4GB will be used. Use a PAE enabled kernel. 3200MB HIGHMEM available. 896MB LOWMEM available. Memory: 2056396k/4194304k available (2043k kernel code, 39416k reserved, 846k data, 232k init, 1179584k highmem) Why it suggest me to "Use a PAE enabled kernel."? Thanks. Giuliano.

Hi folks, As a breather from the "thread-now-wider-than-my-headers-window-in-thunderbird" conversation re: mixing repos, I have a question regarding a machine I'm about to put online. :) I run a web hosting company and my secondary (primary to the world) DNS box died from a massive rootkit/hack last night. It was running an old Slackware 9.1 installation and I will be completely cleaning those drives sector-by-sector. After which I'll be installing CentOS 5 on that hardware. As it will be a production server and this is my first foray into CentOS/SELinux in a production environment I was hoping to get a recommended list of what to include and, more specifically, what *not* to include from the distro CDs I will be doing a text based install, hoping to avoid the installation of X. Other than BIND and vsftpd, I don't think I need much. This machine will be pulling zone files from my primary web server and storing some archive files and backups for me. I'm dilligently R`ingTFMs, and will continue to.... I'd sure be appreciative of any jumpstart help and/or any pitfalls of which to be cognizant. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry for my broken ass webmail, but I don't have access to a real mail client at the moment. Personally I would recommend against installing any service that isn't absolutely necessary. Such as FTP. On a DNS server, if that's all it is going to be, there is no need for FTP services. If you need to upload things to the server, use scp, which is a part of SSH. The install is going to add alot of services that you probably won't need on the server, such as sendmail. Shut down any service that you don't need. The fewer services running the fewer attack vectors. You will never get it "hack proof". What you will get is something that "script kiddies" may not bother with in favor of easier targets. Like the old saying goes, "You don't have to run faster than the cheetah. You just have to run faster than the man running next to you." I would also, if possible, disallow root logins to the server via SSH. I just did an install of CentOS 5 on one of my machines. However, when I try to use the 'service' command (such as 'service httpd start') I get an error that the service command is not found. Why would that be? Where does this command come from? I can launch the services just fine using the respective /etc/init.d/ entries. --------------------------------------------------------- Sorry for the broken webmailer... All, I have been looking at zenity to pop up messages on the X screen. Is there another alternative to zenity that I have not found? I need to be able to completely remove the OK button, I cannot find a way in zenity to do this. also It would be nice to have a --timeout 5 option on the command line also. Any suggestions? Jerry

Progress on the decTOP

The unit has two sets of two USB ports. Each port is marked. One for the keyboard, another for the mouse, a third for the ethernet, and the forth for the printer. If I put the USB DVD/CDRW in the mouse port, and the keyboard in the printer port, I see the USB driver loading, and the CD is recognized. For both Centos 4.5 and 5.0 I have submitted a bug report on the Centos 5 crash further into the install.....

simplest boot to set hardware clock

Well I found a significant source of my problems with these decTOPs. Hardware clock is back at Jan 2006. And many things fail..... And there is no way to access the bios from a boot sequence. On the one I discovered this, I watched everything get errors during all the reboots a Trixbox install goes through. Once I was allowed to log in, I ended using date to set the system date and hwclock to use the system date to fix the hardware clock. Thanks!

Diskless client from system-config-netboot doesn't boot.

Hi folks, I've followed a set of instructions I found on http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_books/centos_linux_guides/centos_enterpris… which describes using system-config-netboot to set up PXE booting. I used a CentOS-4.3 install (custom, all options de-selected, then anaconda-busybox installed after the fact) as a reference/base. I followed the instructions, extrapolating a bit as the window defining the diskless client has more options than those presented in the example. When I boot the PXE client, it does the pivot root operation, and finally concludes with: SELinux: Disabled at runtime SELinux: Unregistering netfilter hooks ...at which point it hangs for ever. I have tried performing a yum -y update on my reference system, then recreating the root mount point, but it fails the same way. I should probably mention that both the reference and diskless client are identical hardware, and that the hardware has successfully PXE booted a diskless OS (a RedHat 8.0 as it happens) in the past. The lack of any information on the web implies that I'm doing something trivially incorrect, can anyone tell me what it is? RAID storage - SATA, SCSI, or Fibre Channel?

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 and am looking to add more storage. I know a lot of factors can go into the type of answer given, but for present and future technology planning, should I look for a rack of SATA, SCSI, or fibre channel drives? Maybe I'm dating myself with fibre channel, and possibly SCSI? I may be looking to add a few TB now, and possibly more later. What are people using these days? What throughput and reliability are you seeing? What accounts for the cost differences? Thanks. Scott

Install stops seeing USB CDrom

I have sought information on this in the past. I have a decTOP that I can install DSL on with no trouble from my USB DVD/CDRW drive. Centos won't. Neither 4.4 or 5.0 The boot starts, the CD is being read. After I respond to language, it stops saying it can't find the CD. If I go the linux askmethod approach, I can 'see' it loading the install image from the CD, it goes through the language part. Then when I select Local CD it can't find the CD. So I was thinking. Is there a driver I should be loading? Afterall, this is a DVD/CDRW and MAYBE there is an intrepretation problem? Although I have used this SAME DVD/CDRW to install on other systems.... So it might not be a drive type issue, but rather a USB driver issue? I know from past attempts, if I go the network approach, and select a USB ethernet dongle (the last on the list) it finds my USB ethernet dongle. But that might mean that in this case the install followed a path of first loading a USB driver, and then proceeding. Why not go the Network route? This is a Trixbox install and it is a Trixbox CD.

can't login to remote cvs server

Hi Everyone, I have, for the first time, installed and minimally configured a cvs server on a CentOS 5 box. I followed a "how to" to do the initial configuration, so I'm sure I haven't done anything wrond (according to the "how to", anyway). But, I keep getting this error: $ CVSROOT=:pserver:ksandhu@kermit:/var/cvs/asterisk $ cvs login Logging in to :pserver:ksandhu@kermit:2401/var/cvs/asterisk CVS password: /var/cvs/asterisk: no such repository /var/cvs/asterisk exists, and it's been initialized like so: sudo cvs -d /var/cvs asterisk init I also created "cvsuser" and "cvsadmin", which I've used to set permissions and ownership on /var/cvs/asterisk: drwxrwsr-x 3 cvsuser cvsadmin 4096 Aug 20 14:00 /var/cvs/asterisk I'm stumped. I can't figure out why cvs keeps saying the repository doesn't exist. I'm missing something critical, obviously. Does anyone have any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?
