HELP, I accidentally initialized my /boot partition

So I installed a second drive in my system today, and instead of typing "mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1" I did a "mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda1". Fortunately, that was just my /boot partition. I thought I could just copy the contents from the /boot partition from another system, but that didn't work as expected. The again, I don't have another system that's identical to the mine. What is the best way to re-create the /boot partition for my system? Alfred

I wrote a bunch of files to a backup DVD about two months ago and now neither of my drives will read it. I get mount errors from "not a directory" to something like "unrecognized file system type" and so on, usually after a really long wait and a notice about how the drive is write-protected (duh). results from 'netstat -tlpn' gives me a line... tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:46929 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - googling for port 46929 doesn't turn up anything and so I don't have a clue what process this belongs to. Someone else had pointed out that it is *not* an automount problem. When I verified the gnome-mount package, it apparently is fine. I'm stuck with this problem on my daughters box. I can (usually) mount a DVD on her box manually, as root, but that's not something I am going to teach my 6 year old or my wife to do. I don't want them running as root. I am running the Firewall and SELinux (permissive mode) on my box and on daughters box. Works perfectly on my box. In my daughters box, in the same drive, it will mount a CD OK but not a DVD. If you find a solution for this, please post to the ML, because I'm sure we are not alone. There's probably a configuration file that isn't 100% correct or permissions incorrect, but I don't know which file. Lanny

OT: Suggestions for database for physicians patient records?

This is very OT. If list readers can point me in the right direction, to other mailing lists, or web sites for recommended databases, that will be much appreciated! My wife's doctor wants to move records, for approximately 6000 patients (over a 12 year period), from paper (18th century) to a database (20th century). The data entry will be a PITA, for his secretaries, regardless of what software he goes with. I did some reading about MySQL, and I also did some googling for Linux+database and there are many other databases out there. One requirement is that one field be variable length (patient history: surgeries, treatments, etc.), which I suspect might vary from 200 words to 3000 words. That field size needs to be very flexible. If there are "front ends" that will make it easier for his secretaries to input patient records to the database and access it, that will be a "plus". It would also be a plus, but, it's not mandatory, if they can do this in Spanish. It's a small office (2 surgeons, nurses and secretaries) so I suspect there might be 4 to 6 workstations connected to the database server, maximum. I would like to help him get the best possible solution. Something with a large user base, excellent documentation and an active ML, like CentOS, is the goal. Thanks much! Lanny

Install on a usb flash drive

I all, I was thinking about installing centos on a usb flash drive. Perhaps a 4GIG. I dont need X or anything on this drive so installing should fit just fine. Are there boot issues with these flash drives? I'll be using a newer motherboard so the motherboard should be able to boot USB. Does this work? Have others done anything with flash drives? I am wanting this flash drive to be the ONLY drive in the computer. Kind of a dedicated machine running multiple RS232 multiport cards. Thanks, Jerry

Monitor not put in powersaving mode

I notice that CentOS 5 only blanks out my screen, but doesn't set it to powersaving mode (the power LED stays blue instead of going yellow). I think I saw this on CentOS 4 as well, but I had a CentOS 4 console machine only for a short time back then and after that only remotely used ones. Now I have one fully running workstation with X under CentOS 5 and would like to fix that. This also happens in run-level 3, so it's not specific to the X-Server or desktop manager. Hi, I would like to do a network install using PIXES boot, however the ethernet device was not supported by centos installation (RTL8110SC). How do i add this module into the initrd? I know i can use: mkinitrd --with=r8169 `uname -r`, but i did not know what is the standard modules included in the installation initrd of Centos. Thanks! --beast

Data recovery with superblocks?

It recently occurred to me, as I was partitioning a RAID with fdisk, that when I built the system, I was presented with a graphical utility that "magically" created the partitions. Now, using fdisk, I was reminded of being given superblocks. Although I haven't used data recovery techniques using superblocks, is there a way to retrieve the superblock numbers the OS has assigned to a partition? Thanks. Scott

Any suggestions to help me troubleshoot a "killed by signal 11" problem with Postfix? I've Googled and fiddled, but cannot figure it out. I have no idea where to look/start. Based on this post, Wietse suggests this type of problem happens when there compiled with different libraries. However, I installed the latest CentOS-plus kernel (2.6.18-8.1.8.el5.centos.plus) but there doesn't appear to be a kmod-gndb for this kernel. Looks like the latest kmod-gnbd is available for kernel 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5. But I cannot find a kmod-drbd for this kernel. Am I missing something or is this worth a entry in the buglist? CPU and FBDIMM thermal monitoring

I'm running Centos5 x86_64 on an ASUS DSBV-DX/SAS mainboard with a Xeon E5345 quad core CPU. The mainboard BIOS shows me all the thermal information about CPU and the FBDIMMs as well as the fan rotation speeds. ACPI is set to version 3.0 in the BIOS. Under Centos5 I can't see any of these information under /proc/acpi/thermal_zone. This directory is just empty. Do I have to load any special kernel modules to get the correct values? Of course I'd like to have acpid give alerts or shut down the system in case of overheating. Best regards, Bernd.

To create a user: spamfilter. and add -u spamfilter to the start command. So I created the user and group. Install CentOS from a floppy disk

Hi, I'm trying to install CentOS 4.5 in a PIII. Problem is the computer doesn't boot by the CD-ROM drive and when I try to access the BIOS to change the settings, the machine goes bezerk :( Is it possible to start the install through a floppy and then continue the rest of the install process with the CDs ? logrotate and httpd logs

I swear that I've removed httpd from logrotate.d on more than one occasion because I prefer to rotate httpd logs on my own schedule. But the config keeps on returning and throwing off my stats. I'm assuming that when there is an Apache upgrade that it's re-inserting the config into the logrotate.d directory? Is there an easy way to stop it from doing this? I *really* do not want to have to manually remove the config each time I upgrade Apache... Thanks, Scott

centos 4.5 deleting the top panel

I can right click on the top panel and select "Delete Panel" on centos 4.5 however, is there a way to do that in a shell script? I was looking at gconf-editor under apps/panel/toplevels/top_panel but I dont see anything there about "dont show it at all". Thanks, Jerry

Hi all, On my newly up-and-running nameserver (CentOS 5), I noticed the following alerts in /var/log/messages after restarting BIND. (lines inserted to aid in reading). As I'm new to SELinux, I'm hoping for some pointers on 1) if this is an issue which simply *must* be addressed, or if it's something I should live with, and 2) how to eliminate the warming messages without sacrificing SELinux protections. The system does not have X installed, so 'setroubleshoot' isn't an option (unless there's a text equivalent). yum update fails, cobbler check fails

Hi, I'm running Centos 5 on an IBM x3550 series server with kernel version 2.6.18-8.el5 #1 SMP, dual xeon, 9GB ram system. When I run yum update, I get this error: --> Running transaction check --> Processing Dependency: libevent-1.1a.so.1()(64bit) for package: nfs-utils --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: libevent-1.1a.so.1()(64bit) is needed by package nfs-utils I could do a force past this, but was just curious if anyone else has run into this issue. The reason I ask is that I just installed RPMforge, cobbler, koan, and dnsmasq. 11 wget ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/dag/redhat/el4/en/x86_64/dag/RPMS/rpmforge-release-… 12 rpm -ivh rpmforge-release-0.3.6-1.el4.rf.x86_64.rpm 13 yum install cobbler 14 yum install koan 16 yum install dnsmasq 17 cobbler check -I get this error when running cobbler check: [root@localhost ~]# cobbler check Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/cobbler", line 18, in ? import cobbler.cobbler as app ImportError: No module named cobbler.cobbler Could these two symptoms relate to the same root cause? Customizing locale settings in CentOS-4.5

I am trying to determine how to customize the date and time display of system utilities and user programs using the locale settings. What I really want is some sort of utility program that does the same thing for CentOS as the Regions Settings Control Panel app. for MicroSoft Windows accomplishes, but I have no hope of seeing that. I have traced the login locale processing through /etc/profile /etc/profile.s/*.sh and ~/.bash_profile and have decided to work backwards from ~/.bash_profile. What I initially wish to accomplish is to set the date and time display (only) to iso-8601 format. I infer from what I have read that setting LC_TIME to "i18n.UTF-8" "should" accomplish this (presumably referring to /usr/share/i18n/locales/i18n). Diskdump on a Logical Volume.

Alle, I'm trying to setup diskdump on a FJ E7110 notebook. Disk partitions were auto configured, using /dev/hda1 for /boot and /dev/hda2 for VolGroup00 (LogVol00 (/) and LogVol01 (swap)). Can diskdump be configured to use the logical swap volume? Quotas not working over NFS?

Hi I have a problem with displaying quotas on a NFS client running CentOS 5. It works fine in the sense that I can display the quota for a user when running the quota command as root, It does not work when running as a ordinary user as shown in the example below. Hard Drive Recovery

I have just finished setting up and configuring a server running CentOS 5 with 2 Xen VMs. This article describes my journey through this, including the problems I faced and there solutions. It documents the installation of CentOS 5, from a single CD, adding software, configuring squid, NFS, Xen, etc and sharing yum cache and lot more! I request everyone to check this out and tell me what should I do to make this setup properly secured and robust. Comments requested!!! chown and chgrp on 4.5 vs 5.0

I just noticed that on centso 4.5 I have an executable with the +s (chmod +s myexe) doing a chmod root myexe and chown root myexe does NOT affect the +s setting. However, on centos 5 this is not the case. chmod +s myexe chown root myexe or chgrp root myexe will DROP the +s status. How can I get around this? I want to keep the owner, group, world settings. nfs installation

Im trying to install nfs on my server. i tried to do apt-get install nfs nfs-lock portmap. but portmap is the only one available. Is there a new name for nfs and nfs-lock nowadays?

SFTP error (perhaps due not to using passive mode?)

I'm getting a weird error when I try to sFTP on a CentOS box (which I don't have root access). when I run: sftp -oPort=990 user(a)host.domain.com I get the following error, which I suspect is a result of not being in "passive mode" (which works when I use Filezilla on Windows) Connecting to host.domain.com ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer Any suggestions?

ssh key with redundant targets?

Is there a way to tell ssh that it is OK that the target of a command may be one of several machines, not necessarily the one it stuck in ~/.ssh/known_hosts last time around? This might be due to DNS round-robin or an HA failover. Setting StrictHostKeyChecking to no in /etc/ssh/ssh_config allows commands to complete but it still prints the warning which confuses people. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

I believe that as long as the interfaces are connected to different networks, there is no problem having the same MAC address. Connecting two NICs with the same mac address to the same network would be a Bad Thing (tm), as network switches would be confused about where to send packets destined for the MAC address in question. Years ago, Sun workstations with multiple NICs would always have the same MAC address for all the NICs. That being said, it does seem less than helpful on a modern motherboard. Sorry - I missed the original post - but I can think of one scenario where two NICs have the same MAC address. However, it's extremely unusua.l. The IEEE has managed the allocation of addresses for Ethernet, but IBM has done the same for Token Ring. The two didn't talk, and so their allocated address ranges overlap. Consequently there are a number of pairs of Token Ring and Ethernet cards out there that have the same MAC address. Token Ring/Ethernet bridges have to do some bit-fiddling to map TR MAC's to Ethernet because of it. That's probably not what the OP was enquiring about - unless he's extremely unfortunate and still has to deal with TR. MS Exchange to MBOX

We are planning on moving a large amount of Exchange mailboxes to UNIX mbox format. My question is, does anyone know of any projects out there or of any tools that can assist in this conversion? Thanks Josh

NFS / DNS problem

Hi all, Today we have had a strange problem that has taken down our website, we understand what happened but not why so I am hoping someone has seen this before. We have our web servers (web1 web2 web3 ..... web10) mounting an NFS share (/export/data) from server nfs1. On the web server side we use autofs in the format nfs-dedicated:/export/data where nfs-dedicated is an alias in our internal DNS servers pointing to server nfs1. We run a primary and a secondary DNS (bind) server ns0, ns1 authoritative for our zones and our webservers have them configured in /etc/resolv.conf Today we had to run some upgrade on the dns servers (bios firmwares etc) so we took down ns0 and with it our website went down. All the nfs shares disappeared from the web servers (the logs show requests to mount/unmount timing out), but at the same time on nfs1 the logs show requests (mount and unmount) coming from the web servers and no errors. As soon as ns0 is back up, all gets back to normal. Minutes later we take down ns1 for maintenance and it doesn't have any impact on the website. dig @ns0 nfs-web gives exactly the same results on ns0/1 Back to the office we try to reproduce the same scenario configuring iptables on web3 to block traffic to ns0 but the server (web3) keeps working fine reverting to ns1 for name resolution (as you would expect). Has anybody seen this happening before? Any comment/suggestion much appreciated. Thanks Simone

dns propagation problem

Im using centos 4.5 and bind 9.2.4-27.0.1.el4, im having a problem propagating updates on domains. when i update the main NS the secondary and tertiary doesn't update automatically. i need to delete the <domain>.zone file in the secondary and tertiary to get update from the main NS. I don't where's the problem i don't get any errors i just dont get the AXFR when the don't delete the file from the backup NS.
