I am looking for it..... I need it (according to the docs) for Scalix 11. And their docs say it is included in SuSE, but it does not seem to be in Centos 5. And I think I had it for a Centos 4 system.

I have just finished setting up and configuring a server running CentOS 5 with 2 Xen VMs. This article describes my journey through this, including the problems I faced and there solutions. chown and chgrp on 4.5 vs 5.0

I just noticed that on centso 4.5 I have an executable with the +s (chmod +s myexe) doing a chmod root myexe and chown root myexe does NOT affect the +s setting. However, on centos 5 this is not the case. chmod +s myexe chown root myexe or chgrp root myexe will DROP the +s status. How can I get around this? I want to keep the owner, group, world settings. nfs installation

Im trying to install nfs on my server. i tried to do apt-get install nfs nfs-lock portmap. but portmap is the only one available. Is there a new name for nfs and nfs-lock nowadays?

SFTP error (perhaps due not to using passive mode?)

I'm getting a weird error when I try to sFTP on a CentOS box (which I don't have root access). when I run: sftp -oPort=990 user(a)host.domain.com I get the following error, which I suspect is a result of not being in "passive mode" (which works when I use Filezilla on Windows) Connecting to host.domain.com ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer Any suggestions?

ssh key with redundant targets?

Is there a way to tell ssh that it is OK that the target of a command may be one of several machines, not necessarily the one it stuck in ~/.ssh/known_hosts last time around? This might be due to DNS round-robin or an HA failover. Setting StrictHostKeyChecking to no in /etc/ssh/ssh_config allows commands to complete but it still prints the warning which confuses people. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Connecting two NICs with the same mac address to the same network would be a Bad Thing (tm), as network switches would be confused about where to send packets destined for the MAC address in question. Years ago, Sun workstations with multiple NICs would always have the same MAC address for all the NICs. That being said, it does seem less than helpful on a modern motherboard. Sorry - I missed the original post - but I can think of one scenario where two NICs have the same MAC address. However, it's extremely unusua.l. The IEEE has managed the allocation of addresses for Ethernet, but IBM has done the same for Token Ring. The two didn't talk, and so their allocated address ranges overlap. Consequently there are a number of pairs of Token Ring and Ethernet cards out there that have the same MAC address. Token Ring/Ethernet bridges have to do some bit-fiddling to map TR MAC's to Ethernet because of it. That's probably not what the OP was enquiring about - unless he's extremely unfortunate and still has to deal with TR. NFS / DNS problem

Hi all, Today we have had a strange problem that has taken down our website, we understand what happened but not why so I am hoping someone has seen this before. We have our web servers (web1 web2 web3 ..... web10) mounting an NFS share (/export/data) from server nfs1. On the web server side we use autofs in the format nfs-dedicated:/export/data where nfs-dedicated is an alias in our internal DNS servers pointing to server nfs1. We run a primary and a secondary DNS (bind) server ns0, ns1 authoritative for our zones and our webservers have them configured in /etc/resolv.conf Today we had to run some upgrade on the dns servers (bios firmwares etc) so we took down ns0 and with it our website went down. All the nfs shares disappeared from the web servers (the logs show requests to mount/unmount timing out), but at the same time on nfs1 the logs show requests (mount and unmount) coming from the web servers and no errors. As soon as ns0 is back up, all gets back to normal. Minutes later we take down ns1 for maintenance and it doesn't have any impact on the website. dig @ns0 nfs-web gives exactly the same results on ns0/1 Back to the office we try to reproduce the same scenario configuring iptables on web3 to block traffic to ns0 but the server (web3) keeps working fine reverting to ns1 for name resolution (as you would expect). Has anybody seen this happening before? Any comment/suggestion much appreciated. Thanks Simone

dns propagation problem

Im using centos 4.5 and bind 9.2.4-27.0.1.el4, im having a problem propagating updates on domains. when i update the main NS the secondary and tertiary doesn't update automatically. i need to delete the <domain>.zone file in the secondary and tertiary to get update from the main NS. I don't where's the problem i don't get any errors i just dont get the AXFR when the don't delete the file from the backup NS.

text installer used in Linux?

Can someone tell me the name of the text installer used in distros like Debian / Ubuntu? I'd like to create one upon first time boot for a CentOS-based virtual application I'm making. So, after someone boots up, I'd like to have a little GUI thing ask them questions and then put those variables in a file (or maybe use something like sed to edit other network config files).

Forcing ifcfg-eth0 to use the same nic in multi nic machine

I am new to CentOS (coming from Fedora) and I really like it! I am having difficulty getting one of my machines to boot and assign the same designation of eth0 and eth1 to the same nics consistantly. I have an MSI motherboard with 2 nics on the board. Strangely enough both nics report the same MAC address. This is not an issue since I use the computer to route between two different subnets so they don't see each other on the network. The problem comes when I reboot and they race against each other to see which one will get to be eth0. If they switch my routing dies and I loose access with out rebooting and hoping they switch back or switching the actual cables. I have googled and searched my networking resources but all of the fixes that I have found focus on using the MAC address to solve the problem but in my case they are the same. The only difference is that they use different drivers. One is a Realtek and other is a Marvell. I have turned off Kudzu or they reconfigured every time a booted the machine. It only happens every once in a while but I need it to be consistent. Any suggestions or pushes in the right direction would be most appreciated. Doug Coats

Using a program

OS: CentOS 5 x86. There is a program I am using which requires a start up service running. The service runs in Runlevels 3,4,5. When I am using the program as a root it works fine. When I am using it as a user it produces an error. If I do as a root, /etc/init.d/program start, then I can use it as a simple user. I have emailed the company that makes it and had no response. Any idea on how to fix this?

I am familiar with centos and this forum, and have some rhel / centos questions. Therefore I'm asking the question here I am about to install rhel4.5 on a hp dl380 with 4 disc's. The standard rhel installation installers all in one partition? Will there be any advantage of splitting the file system up? What would be a good recommended partition table for a server running scripts handling big amount of transactions? Normally i would do something like this, but i need to ask the question since I haven't installed on a production machine before /boot /opt /usr /var /tmp /home An other thing, I haven't installed rhel before, only centos and notice a difference in that yum is not a part of rhel, and later figuring out that no updates are possible since I installed without the graphics's. Are there other significant differences between CentOS and RHEL?

Adding Things to Rescue Mode

I'd like to add a few things to rescue mode. I'm tired of having to use a floppy with hardware drivers when ever I need to go into rescue mode and there are a few other utilities that I'd like to add as well. How would I go about doing this? Matlab 2007a and C5 out-of-box broken

I had to reinstall C5 64-bit out-of-box on two machines. Before the reinstall, Matlab 2007a 64-bit worked fine. Now, I get "failed to start the desktop; failure loading desktop class". matlab -nojvm works fine. The reinstall was not an upgrade. I tested on two identical systems - one before I installed the NVIDIA drivers, and one after. No difference. I installed jre and jdk 1_5.0.11 on one system, and redirected /usr/bin/java to the newer one. No luck. I tried installing Matlab as root and sudo, running it as root and plain user. No difference. Web sites aren't helping me much. I performed a complete install (selecting ALL items from EVERY catagory of the C5 64-bit DVD). The machines are not on any network and never will be (both isolated systems) Anyone else with ideas? Thanks. Scott

Thanks Phil, I might just do a complete re-install of CentOS 5 when I return home from holiday in Spain tomorrow! This attempt to get wifi working has kept me occupied for the last 2 weeks or so (among other things). booting CentOS in rescrue mode from USB (+over network)

Hello, is there a way to boot CentOS 4.5 from USB flash key in rescue mode ? The prefered solution would be to have booting part of CentOS started by SysLinux and download the content of CD1 from a network server (HTTP), like Anaconda is able to use command "method". Best regards, Martin

decTOP - Centos install fails but DSL frugal install worked

I got 4 of those decTOPs (http://www.dataevolution.com/dectop%20info%202.htm) and upgraded the memory to 512Mb. I cannot get Centos 5.0 to install. I have the keyboard mouse attached to an ATEN USB-PS/2 adapter (probably should try without this). I have a USB DVD/CDRW drive. The install CD boots just fine. But then the install says, "No CD" and takes me to Askmethods. So I use FTP, as I typically do anyway. They have a generic USB ethernet dongle, but the last device listed on the ethernet devices seems to work just fine. I get all the way through configuring and when it gets to Resolving Dependencies, it crashes. Something about not finding the kernel? And how do I remotely write the debug information? FTP does not seem to be the protocol used. So I partitioned a drive on another system. In partition 4 I copied the 6 ISO CD images. I boot from CD, and then switch to Local Harddrive from /dev/hda4 and /. . Then install follows the same behaviour as the FTP install, so at least I know it is not the USB ethernet. And there is no option to write the dump to /dev/hda4 Openfiler 2.0 hangs at "Resolving Dependenies". Just sits there. Oh, Openfiler 'figured out' to load up a USB driver to get to the CD. I haven't found my FreeNAS CD to see what it does. But the latest D*#nSmallLinux (DSL) had no trouble booting and running of CD. Now I have successfully done the Frugal install to the hard drive and am booted without the CD at all. Now I REALLY want to run Centos on a couple of these units. What should I look for that is causing Centos to fail to instal? How do I capture that debug trace? Since I DO have DSL up and running, if there is some test to perform, let me know. I haved NO experience with DSL or Knoppix. Next is an ASTLinux install on one of the boxes. I really want Trixbox instead.....

NAS -- Centos 5 DIY or Openfiler 2.0

I need to set up a NAS. Got a box with a 200Gb drive ready to go. I have installed Openfiler 2.0 on it but..... I really can't add other services, like FreeRadius (keep the list simple for now). So maybe I should just stay with what I know and use Centos. Other experiences? Are there good DIY NAS instructions for Centos 5?

migrating users from linux to centos

Dear All, I have been running linux 9 server as a dns and mail server and is workin fine.. i want to install CENTOS 5 with all the latest mail server software and bind as well as all the libraries on another machine whic is already done also the data is backed up and will be tranferred. but i would like to know i have about existing 100 mail users how could i tranfer these usernames and passwrd to the new CENtos 5 server .. if i copy the /etc/passwd from my linux server it gonna overite my centos5 /etc/passwd file as there r new users n also new groups create when i installed centos5 n software also i see that the /etc/shadow has only read permisson for root so cant be over written is there a way i cd possiblly have the existing users with thier password on centos5 so i dont have to ask them for their passwords n create all users again appreciat ur help Thanks and regards simon -- Network Administrator

PHP 4 on Centos 5

Hi! I want to install PHP 4 via RPM on a CentOS 5 server. I downloaded the CentOS 4.5 , installed all needed dependency packages, but I'm having troubles while building the RPM: I was having compile errors with the Apache APR module, I had to make a symlink form apr-config to apr-1-config, since the package expected to find apr-config which didn't exist, and had to pass via CFLAGS the result of "apr-config --cppflags --includes --cflags" Now I reach a stage, where some test are made, I to check fo some PHP bugs and it fails there... I removed the first bug giving probelsm to see what happened, and failed with another one, which it's really strange, bugs like the #23951 which was solved in June 2003... I don;t understand why is this happening.. :( Has anyone been able to compile a PHP 4 RPM on CentOS 5 or are there any available SRPMs out there already prepared for this? I've compiled PHP 4.4.7 from source downloaded form php.net with no problems, but I would like to install it via RPM, preferably by using the CentOS PHP 4 RPM. If there isn't, I will compile directly form source and not use RPM, but would prefer to do it via RPM if possible Thanks in advance, Juan PS: please, don't reply telling me to use PHP 5, I NEED to use PHP 4 on this case, will migrate to PHP 5 ASAP, but still can not do it yet :)

Updating system

Hi... I'm about to update my centos 4 x64 as is said in the centos-announces list, but i have a question. The link included in the mail direct me to a redhat web page where the update is explained and remarks that all previously released updates must be applied in order to set the current update. My question is, do i have to set some parameter when aptemting to update my system by "up2date" command or does it do automatically? Rick, The reason i used top was because I noticed that mailscanner and smtpd were always on the list UNLESS the issue was occurring. I will try ps + grep next time as well. Cannot Boot XServer

I am currently using Virtual PC 2007 to install/configure CentOS 4.5. I've got the O/S installed ok. However since running a yum update, I can no longer successfully complete an init 5 boot. Virtual PC gives an internal error 13 message. If I boot to init 3, I can reconfigure the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and run 'startx' manually without any problems. If I then shutdown the Virtual PC and restart, it will not boot to init 5. Anyone seen this before and can offer any assistance? Automount configuration problem

I have a simple automount configuration problem. I've done two similar, clean, Custom installations of CentOS 5.0, on two similar, but not identical boxes. On my box, automount is working perfectly. On my daughter's box, it's not working. If I put the FC6 DVD into the drive in my box, I can see the contents of the DVD, without any problem. If I cat /etc/mtab in my box, I see this line: /dev/hdc /media/FC_6\040i386\040DVD iso9660 ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,uid=503 0 0 In System > Preferences > Removable Drives and Media, in both boxes, for Storage tab, the 3 top boxes have check marks. Mounted on /media. On my daughters box, nothing in /media. It's /dev/hdc. Question: What configuration file do I need to change, in her box? TIA! Lanny

Thanks again Phil for all your help, It's now on the hardware tab OK and says ipw2200 eth1 ethernet configured! However, what I just don't understand (and sorry if I'm being dumb!) is why the "new" adapter just doesn't show up in the list of adapters on the devices tab as Intel Coporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG or some such. So the problem is when I try to set up eth1 with all the necessary wireless info (WEP key etc), I can't do it because I can't select the right adapter! I'm sure I'm nearly there, but this last "small step for man" is proving to be a bit of "a giant leap...."! Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but you do need to reboot after adding the line to /etc/modprobe.conf. Memory is hazy as I have not done this for quite a while, but I believe you also need to add the adapter in system-config-network with "New" on the "Devices" tab. It does have to show up on the "Hardware" tab for this to work. Assuming you get that far, it is good to create separate profiles to use when you move from wired to wireless. These can be selected at boot time by adding "netprofile="MyProfileName" (in my case MyProfileName can be "Wired", "WiFi", or a few other location-dependent values) to the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf - otherwise defaults to the last used profile. Can either manually edit at boot time (requires you to remember the legal profile names) or maintain separate grub stanzas for different profiles. hello, I have problem to install lm_sensors on CentOS 4.5 (Linux 2.6.9-42.ELsmp). I am getting error message "FATAL: Module bmcsensors not found." after I enter "modprobe bmcsensors". I got advice to install http://bmcsensors-26.sourceforge.net/ into my kernel, but I don't know how to do it. Does somebody has experience how to get lm-sensors working on CentOS 4.5 ? Unable to add new device Intel Coporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG

Using CentOS 5 - installed ipw2200 firmware and tried to set up new eth1 wifi device, but adapter Intel Coporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG doesn't show up in list of adapters when I try add New Device (ipw2200 does show up on hardware tab as ipw2200 eth1 ethernet configured). yum install libstdc++-devel

On CentOS 4.5 (x86_64); happening on several different machines with libstdc++ and libstdc++-devel v. 3.4.6-8 only one of the i386 or x86_64 versions of libstc++-devel is installed if I yum install libstdc++-devel it will install the x86_64 version and remove the i386 version, but not warn me. Similarly if the i386 version is installed it will install the x86_64 and remove the i386, without warning. But if i remove libstc++-devel (and necessarily gcc-c++), then reinstall with yum install gcc-g++ libstdc++-devel both versions of libstdc++-devel will be installed. Now that you mention it, IIRC I had to add "alias eth1 ipw2200" to /etc/modprobe.conf to get eth1 to show up on my laptop. Custom vmlinuz/initrd.img ??

Unless I am barking up the wrong tree. I need to build a custom vmlinuz/initrd.img. I am using cobbler http://cobbler.et.redhat.com/ and am trying to get it to work with VMware, When I imported the CentOS 5 installation CD cobbler selected a vmlinuz/initrd.img and stuffed them into /tftpboot/images/CentOS5-i386/ I don't betlieve this vmlinuz/initrd.img supports the WMware network drivers. How do I check what drivers are supported in this vmlinuz/initrd.img pair? If as I suspect I need to add support for the vmware nic drivers, how do I do that? -- Drew Einhorn

I've loaded the ipw modules with /sbin/modprobe ipw2200 and then /sbin/lsmod | grep ipw which gives: ipw2200 136873 0 ieee80211 33417 1 ipw2200 However, when I run system-config-network I don't see Intel Coporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG (eth1) in the list of adapters. Also, when I type the following command # dmesg | grep ipw I get this message: ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.0kmprq ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation usbcore: registered new driver ipwtty drivers/usb/serial/ipw.c: IPWireless tty driver v0.3 I've had loads of help so far from the CentOS list, for which I'm really grateful, but don't seem to be much nearer to getting wireless networking on my Dell Inspiron laptop - any more help much appreciated.
