I am an experienced MS administrator of W2003 servers & Exchange systems. I have 5+ years UNIX mid-level experience but not in centOS. Grounded in SCO UNIX (the real SCO UNIX). We want to use CentOS on a recently grave yarded Dell poweredge 400SC server. This is a P4 3.0 Ghz, w/4GB memory, 2 SATA 250 GB disks. We want to use this server w/CentOS5, to provide file and print resources to 100 users. Each Department wants control over common folders of info for only their group. Each user wants control over their folders. Pretty much standard permissions for departments. Is this do-able with the server and centOS5 and 100 users? Thank you in advance. Ken

On centos 4 there was a package xloadimage. There doesnt seem to be one in centos 5? yum provides xloadimage doesnt return anything on centos 5. Was this overlooked?? How do I get it. Jerry

Centos 5 install failed. Could it be the USB ethernet?

I am installing Centos on a decTOP via ftp, that comes with a generic USB ethernet. I chose the last listed driver some USB ethernet, and the install took off. Got all the way to selecting packages and then it failed. I don't have any SCP stuff to copy the debug too, but it LOOKS like the ftp is failing now. As if the installer lost track of the driver I selected? Well I will try a total CD install next. But any insight on this could be helpful!

I had the same problem (after updating from 4.5). I found I had the wrong repository for rpmforge (el4 instead of el5). Recommend a USB 802.11 dongle?

I ALMOST bought a dongle on sale at ecost without checking. There is a driver for the CP Technologies adapter, but not as an rpm, it seems. Madwifi.org says no USB support. Though there is some discussion of using the ndiswrapper driver. So which to use? Anyone out there with any success?

CentOS 5.0 and php-yaz

Hi, I have a CentOS 5.0 LAMP server, and I need to install the php-yaz module to implement the Z39.50 protocol (which handles data exchange for public libraries). I've already done this with Debian (a one-liner: apt-get install php-yaz) and also on Slackware (more complicated: compile Yaz, rebuild PHP). Has anyone here ever done this on CentOS? Centos 5 install failed compounded - no CD?

First off, there is no access into the bios on this unit It will boot from the hard drive or a USB CD. I have a USB DVD/CDRW. The system will boot from it. But if I just press enter to install off the CD, I end up at the askmethod menu. I press the local CD option and am told, no CD. Help?

Hi Again try to learn, how to make package. Now when I try to make from .src.rpm I get: [root@oh1mrr lataa]# rpmbuild --rebuild webmin-1.360-1.src.rpm Installing: webmin-1.360-1.src.rpm error: Legacy syntax is unsupported: copyright error: line 12: Unknown tag: Copyright: Freeware What's wrong with rpm? or me, eh? :D Also if I try install webmins noarc.rpm I don't get it work properly... Howdy, Does anyone know if anything has changed with the LVM system from CentOS 4.4 to CentOS 4.5? I'm having kind of a funky issue. Clone physical into virtual

Is there a formal, or preferred, method for importing a physical CentOS machine into a VMware instance? I know they make software to move Windows machines, but I couldn't find one to handle our CentOS servers. I have done something via scp/sftp in the past, which *seemed* to work, but if there's a better way I'm more than interested in hearing the process. Thanks! Scott

Opposite of cp -u

I had at one point copied a large number of files between drives and did not use the -p and thus the timestamps were all set to the date of the copy. I did not catch this, and deleted the source. So I 'lived' with it and have since changed many files. Well, yesterday I found a good backup of many of those files and I want to restore them to their proper dates. cp -p -u is exactly the opposite of what I want. I want to copy only if the source files have an earlier date than the destination files. The source files are just an old copy on another drive that I found when cleaning up things...

Thanks Phil, I think I'll use RPMforge - the only thing is, I'm a bit confused about how I should install the rpm. Do I use yum - I think I have to modify something to get yum to access the right repository don't I? Or do I just download the appropriate rpm from RPMforge and install using rpm on the command line? Also, do I need to install anything else (module dependencies?) or will yum or rpm take care of that? I think you can find stuff with Google, for some WinModems, to get them to work on Linux.. As other posters pointed out, these are not true modems and normally require MS Windows to work. Inexpensive junk, installed into new low end boxes for end users. As another poster pointed out, an External Serial Modem will do the trick for you. RHEL5 and CentOS 5 root logins

I found, under a 64-bit CentOS 5 workstation install, it is possible to modify /etc/inittab and add a couple of lines to prevent root from logging into the console. I found, under a 64-bit RHEL 5 server install, adding the same two lines completely breaks the OS, to the point that a reboot after the lines are added, the OS brings you to a fsck-like prompt, and other things break, too. I didn't have time to look at the logs for specifics, if any were recorded. Does anyone know if a CentOS 5 server install option permits locking out root from console login? Does anyone know of a way, in RHEL 5 Server edition, to prevent root from a console login? Thanks. Scott

Hi, I have a CENTOS BOX as a firewall . both iptabes and iproute 2 are running on it. pls see bleow for installed RPMs. [root@firebox ~]# rpm -qa |grep iptables iptables-1.2.11-3.1.RHEL4 [root@firebox ~]# rpm -qa |grep iproute iproute-2.6.9-3.EL4.7 It has 3 ethernet cards. pls see below. eth0 - internet ip (pls asume. 1.2.3.4/29 ). it connects to ISP router. eth1 - 192.168.100.254 eth2 - 192.168.101.254 There are 2 LANs behind this firewall. both LANs have access to internet due to SNAT rules in the firewall. I have given many SNAT rules per ip basic. some users have full access, some have only web and smtp. I have added many forward rules to suit those SNAT rules. All work fine. one LAN is 192.168.100.0/24, while the other LAN is 192.168.101.0/24 Now, I want LAN with 192.168.101.0/24 to allocate 64 kbit out of 256 kbit. the rest for others. I added rules to the firewall. But I still can not allocate 64 kbit for LAN with 192.168.101.0/24 I think I need a PREROUTING chain for LAN with 192.168.101.0/24 Script is given below. I have a problem creating homedirs on the fly. Since RHEL5 / CentOS5 you have to use pam_oddjob_mkhomedir instead of pam_mkhomedir. Everything is working (the homedir is created) but two things. First on every logon I get the following error message, and I don't know how to fix it: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name com.redhat.oddjob was not provided by any .service files Second: The permissions of the new created homedir is wrong. It should be 700 but it is 755. Can anybody tell me, how to fix these two problems? Thanks Peter

Hi, I am hoping someone can kick me up the learning curve (!) on Virtualization: We have an old piece of data logging software that was written in Turbo Pascal 6 using a file I/O module tuned to Netware and so it expects its data files to be on a Netware server and will not access them locally or via an MS/Samba share - essentially, it uses direct NCP calls for parts of its data access. The logging software was replaced two years ago, but we need occasional access to the data for a minimum of 6 years and so I wondered whether I could virtualize a Netware 3.x/4.x/5.x or 6./x server under Linux (or Win..er..you know..). I have found some articles on Netware 6.5 virtualization but would really appreciate input from anyone actually doing this already - otherwise I'll just have to keep the existing Netware server in the computer room to be fired up about 3-4 times a year 'on demand'. For info, I'm running a Netware 6.5 1-user 'demo' licence - the original install was on Netware 3.12 until the server died and no-one could find the original Netware floppies! Thanks Nigel Kendrick

startup config scripts for CentOS

On CentOS-based VM appliance I'm building, I would like to create a script that runs upon login that asks the user a series of questions that does (among other things) ask them to input their networking information (IP, mask, gate, DNS, etc). I'm hoping you guys might point me in the right direction. Here are some of the specific things I'm looking to accomplish with such a script. (1) Where might I look to for creating these types of scripts (e.g. I'm assuming Bash is the way to go here?) (2) Are there any templates out there that I might use as a starting place? (3) Once I write something, where/how do I call it in /etc/rc.d/ (4) And once it starts, what is the best way to make sure that it doesn't run again upon the second (and subsequent) reboots? Ideally, someone could show me a model of something like this that's already done, and I could just mod that. Otherwise, I'll grind through something manually, if I so have to....

"near native" performance with xen?

Just wondering if there was a howto or other URL that explains what is needed to achieve "near native" performance on a xen domU -- for this purpose, I am thinking about a single domU running on a physical server, in comparison to that same physical server running the same kernel but non-xenified. For instance, using a physical partition for VBD v. using a file-backed one is one of the more obvious ones. Assigning all the VCPUs. And as much RAM as you can get away with (maybe leaving the dom0 with 512MB). But are there others? Since I'm doing paravirtualization, I assume I don't need to turn on VT in the BIOS? What about 32-bit v. 64-bit OS, for the dom0 and for the domU? (I'll be using CentOS-5.) Anything else? johnn

Yum install preferred arch only

I have a couple 64-bit CentOS 5 installations here and was wondering if there was a yum option to have it install only x86_64 arch by default if no arch is specified. I tired of having to append .x86_64 on all package names I only want the x86_64 versions of, if I want the i386 versions too I would add the .i386 package to the list... Thanks All, Ross S. W. I did the same (changed the speed in the BIOS settings) and it's working. I tried it at 80 but I think I'm going to bump it to 160 and see if it works. I still wish I could figure out why the adaptec kernel driver won't install though. Maybe I'll try downloading the source and manually compiling the kernel module.

CENTOS 4 and mono

Hello, Im trying to configure my centos machine to run webservices. Im using the mono repo from www.*mono*-project.com, for rhel-4. After configuring every thing, it all seemed to work fine with a simple webservice for testing purposes. For that, a friendo of mine created a vb webservice on a windows machine and I copied the all resulting files(asmx, dll, etc). When I access the webservice via GET, every thing works just fine. But when I do a POST, the mod-mono-server2.exe goes away :( Does anyone can help me to debug the problem? The apache logs doesnt help much. Thanks

CentOS 4 vs 5 for VMware?

For stability reasons, I'm running CentOS 4 for VMware (it's the devil I know). Are there any compelling reasons to upgrade to CentOS 5 for it? I'm relatively new to the whole virtualisation scene and perhaps there are some updated packages that might be good for VMware?

Simple fix, Adaptec & CentOS = :-( LSI & CentOS = :-) We spent a few days trying to get Adaptec cards working with LTO-3 drives. It was suggested to me from this list to try an LSI, we bought one, it worked, problem solved. Thanks Fabian, There seem to be a number of different ways of installing the ipw2200 firmware and as I've said already I've tried puttting the .fw files into the firmware directory - why doesn't this work? What is actually the best/recommended way of installing the firmware in CentOS 5 please? - not too complicated please as I'm a linux enthusiast but not a great expert! help with samba and ldap on centos 5

Hi everyone; I'm having some trouble with samba on a centos 5 box; the box has been configured to authenticate against an ldap server via authconfig....authentication for normal use (console, ssh) works great....I'm having some trouble with samba using single ldap users or local users....It's rather weird, shares in which access restrictions are based upon ldap groups are working fine, getent group shows local and ldap groups, however attempting to assign access to a share for either a single ldap user or a local user doesn't work, and produces the following error when trying to hit the share: smb_pam_passcheck: PAM: smb_pam_auth failed - Rejecting User myuser1 ! For local users, I've added local os accounts as well as accounts in the samba database with smbpasswd Any ideas? Thanks for your help. Aaron

Stability issues with Dovecot imap-login in Centos 5?

I wonder if other people are seeing stability issues with Dovecot and imap-login against LDAP? I've changed from pam_nss to ldap without nss in Dovecot to see if that helps the issue. I realise Dovecot is version 1.0 in Centos 5, would it be more advisable to switch to Cyrus? I'm using mbox mail spool files would that work with Cyrus? Chris

how to find out which is the system disk by bios?

hi, how can i know which is the system disk by bios? i've pc with 2 sata disk connected to the on board sata controller and 2 other connected to a pci card sata controller. bios see all disk as well as linux, but in linux kernel sda and sdb is the pci card's 2 disks and the on board controllers are sdc and sdd. my problem is centos install the system by default to sda and intall grub in the system disk's mbr (ie. sda's mbr). which is right most of the time, but in my case the system is not boot after the install since grub (and the os) it's not on the system disk where the bios try to find it. ok after i recognize it i can choose sdc during install and install the whole system there, but the worse thing is that i'd like to do it from a kickstart file _automaticaly_. so i have to somehow discover which disk will be choosen by the bios as system disk? or which disk is connected to the on board controller and which is the pci extension card? how can i find out this information (eg. by a shell script in kickstart %pre section)? and this scripts should have to work for all kind of motherboard and sata card too:-) thanks. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

I wouldn't use any other file system than XFS as it is the most reliable file system out there. We've been using XFS on a x86 system for over a year now and haven't had any file system problems. It has actually saved us on occasion. From what I've read, people have only reported problems when they pile layer upon layer of stuff on their disks. Logical volumes, NFS, etc., etc.. We are using XFS on RAID drives, both RAID 1 and 0, and the only extra item we add is NFS. ipw220 wireless firmware for CentOS 5

OK, I've downloaded and unzipped the firmware files in ipw2200-fw-3.0.tgz - so I have 4 files: ipw2200-bss.fw, ipw2200-ibss.fw, ipw2200-sniffer.fw and LICENSE.ipw2200-fw, all of which I've placed in the /lib/firmware directory. Unfortunately, the instructions in README.ipw2200 and INSTALL are not clear as to what to do next. I'm using CentOS 5 on my (Dell) laptop so setting-up wireless networking should be reasonably straightforward - shouldn't it? Any help much appreciated - I'm a real linux fan, but it grieves me to say that, in this case, "wireless works much better in Windows XP!" replicate centos installation

Since neither anaconda nor system-config-kickstart can give a list of all packages that has been installed, waht is the recommended way to replicate one system for another new installation (without using hd cloning) ? Is it possible to simply do 'rpm -qa >> my-ks.cfg' ? When running anaconda installer, it gives system selection as well as package grouping (desktop vs server -> gnome vs kde -> gnome-pilot etc), which file provides these info? Thanks! --beast
