We are testing some simple low bandwidth video and audio broadcasting using real server and client softwares. So, for quick check and simplicity, we were plunking along TESTING on an 3.2GHz XP box and I noticed frames were getting dropped on the broadcast just for resizing a window on the screen during the session. Talk about totally lame... I know this can be a big deal and start conflicting opinions yet I need some experienced perspective please? Can anyone chime in on what they use or what they would buy if they were going to have a workstation box for development that could double as test server and have good high speed storage and excellent video and audio etc etc Im thinking of a box that does audio and video development, can easily handle virtualization, and of course do general work apps plus setting up various server processes for testing whether intranet or internet etc etc It can be premade like specific dell or hp (please list component choices for clarity) OR A hand built box with specific list of components that Now, I know this has been done in magazines with great expense, and even with lower expense, yet I trust the list more than a magazine that wants to sell me advertising etc Thanks in advance - rh

Hello I have a newbie question, given a centos 5 installation, An 5 very large disk arrays ( 2.5Tbytes each ) - Is there a way to suspend or stop the fsck during the boot up? The system seems to pick the most inopportune time to decide to reach the check count limit... and with this many disks, a reboot takes several hours... which is an eternity when your boss is looking over your shoulders for data right now! A ^c worked under version 4 - but has no affect on version 5 Thanks in Advance Dan

Postfix smtp freezing

Hey all, For the last 8 months I have been running a postfix / mail scanner setup based on Johnny Hughes' excellent tutorial. For the firs 7 months I have had no issues. This past month I have been having instances where the user gets an smtp error while trying to send email. Restarting the postfix service is all it takes to resolve this issue. The problem is that it has begun to occur more and more often. It is now up to once every day. I have found nothing unusual in the mail or messages logs. As I am an ultra newbie I am unsure of the next step to take to resolve this. I have search through the past messages on this list and can find nothing. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Jason Ross

Hi folks, As a breather from the "thread-now-wider-than-my-headers-window-in-thunderbird" conversation re: mixing repos, I have a question regarding a machine I'm about to put online. :) I run a web hosting company and my secondary (primary to the world) DNS box died from a massive rootkit/hack last night. It was running an old Slackware 9.1 installation and I will be completely cleaning those drives sector-by-sector. After which I'll be installing CentOS 5 on that hardware. As it will be a production server and this is my first foray into CentOS/SELinux in a production environment I was hoping to get a recommended list of what to include and, more specifically, what *not* to include from the distro CDs I will be doing a text based install, hoping to avoid the installation of X. Other than BIND and vsftpd, I don't think I need much. This machine will be pulling zone files from my primary web server and storing some archive files and backups for me. I'm dilligently R`ingTFMs, and will continue to.... I'd sure be appreciative of any jumpstart help and/or any pitfalls of which to be cognizant. TIA, ~Ray

limits.conf for file size on vsftpd

I've read conflicting reports on whether this works or not ... I have a chrooted instance of vsftpd (using chroot_local_user=YES), with nopriv_user=vsftpd. I set the following in my limits.conf file: vsftpd hard fsize 50000 Now, I know this works in a shell. However, I want it to work for users uploading files, but they can upload away without issue. Has anyone actually got the limits.conf setting to take effect? I tried adding session required pam_limits.so to pam.d/vsftpd, but that doesn't seem to have any effect either. mysql.users deleting

Hello, Today I was working with MySQL in a test box (CentOS 5.0 x86_64) using phpMyAdmin interface. Accidentaly I've removed user table in mysql database (so, mysql.users)... :S I've two interesting questions: 1) Despite of it, ddbb server seems to work perfectly. I use 3/4 diferent databases with their mysql users... and it works yet! I don't understand, because mysql.users is the reference that MySQL server uses to admin their users and permissions access. ¿?¿?¿?¿?¿ Maybe a kind of memory caché is active... but I think this have not any sense... I've suposed the mysql.user was totally _required_. 2) ¿How I can reisert mysql.user table without reinstall entire package? I am an experienced MS administrator of W2003 servers & Exchange systems. I have 5+ years UNIX mid-level experience but not in centOS. Grounded in SCO UNIX (the real SCO UNIX). We want to use CentOS on a recently grave yarded Dell poweredge 400SC server. This is a P4 3.0 Ghz, w/4GB memory, 2 SATA 250 GB disks. We want to use this server w/CentOS5, to provide file and print resources to 100 users. Each Department wants control over common folders of info for only their group. Each user wants control over their folders. Pretty much standard permissions for departments. Is this do-able with the server and centOS5 and 100 users? Thank you in advance. Ken

On centos 4 there was a package xloadimage. There doesnt seem to be one in centos 5? yum provides xloadimage doesnt return anything on centos 5. Was this overlooked?? How do I get it. Jerry

Centos 5 install failed. Could it be the USB ethernet?

I am installing Centos on a decTOP via ftp, that comes with a generic USB ethernet. I chose the last listed driver some USB ethernet, and the install took off. Got all the way to selecting packages and then it failed. I don't have any SCP stuff to copy the debug too, but it LOOKS like the ftp is failing now. As if the installer lost track of the driver I selected? Well I will try a total CD install next. But any insight on this could be helpful!

I had the same problem (after updating from 4.5). I found I had the wrong repository for rpmforge (el4 instead of el5). Recommend a USB 802.11 dongle?

I ALMOST bought a dongle on sale at ecost without checking. There is a driver for the CP Technologies adapter, but not as an rpm, it seems. Madwifi.org says no USB support. Though there is some discussion of using the ndiswrapper driver. So which to use? Anyone out there with any success?

Hi, I have a CentOS 5.0 LAMP server, and I need to install the php-yaz module to implement the Z39.50 protocol (which handles data exchange for public libraries). I've already done this with Debian (a one-liner: apt-get install php-yaz) and also on Slackware (more complicated: compile Yaz, rebuild PHP). Has anyone here ever done this on CentOS? Centos 5 install failed compounded - no CD?

First off, there is no access into the bios on this unit It will boot from the hard drive or a USB CD. I have a USB DVD/CDRW. The system will boot from it. But if I just press enter to install off the CD, I end up at the askmethod menu. I press the local CD option and am told, no CD. Help?

Hi Again try to learn, how to make package. Now when I try to make from .src.rpm I get: [root@oh1mrr lataa]# rpmbuild --rebuild webmin-1.360-1.src.rpm Installing: webmin-1.360-1.src.rpm error: Legacy syntax is unsupported: copyright error: line 12: Unknown tag: Copyright: Freeware What's wrong with rpm? or me, eh? :D Also if I try install webmins noarc.rpm I don't get it work properly... Is there package for centos 5 somewhere? Webmin is one of the killer- progs, what I've used, so would like to use it further more. Using here vanilla kernel-2.6.21.1 rpm-4.4.2-37.el5 Jarmo

Quick query about LVM in 4.5

Howdy, Does anyone know if anything has changed with the LVM system from CentOS 4.4 to CentOS 4.5? I'm having kind of a funky issue. Clone physical into virtual

Is there a formal, or preferred, method for importing a physical CentOS machine into a VMware instance? I know they make software to move Windows machines, but I couldn't find one to handle our CentOS servers. I have done something via scp/sftp in the past, which *seemed* to work, but if there's a better way I'm more than interested in hearing the process. Thanks! Scott

Opposite of cp -u

I had at one point copied a large number of files between drives and did not use the -p and thus the timestamps were all set to the date of the copy. I did not catch this, and deleted the source. So I 'lived' with it and have since changed many files. Well, yesterday I found a good backup of many of those files and I want to restore them to their proper dates. cp -p -u is exactly the opposite of what I want. I want to copy only if the source files have an earlier date than the destination files. The source files are just an old copy on another drive that I found when cleaning up things...

I need to also mention that this server will be the only server in this domain, so there will NOT be any Microsoft servers here. The Microsoft solution for the this function is too expensive, so we want to install centOS5 and configure the centOS5 server as the primary file and print server. The user PCs are Microsoft windows.(w2K & WXP). Are there some comprehensive "how too's" on how the setup the domain, etc. and what needs to be done with a network of windows clients and linux server? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Phil, I think I'll use RPMforge - the only thing is, I'm a bit confused about how I should install the rpm. Do I use yum - I think I have to modify something to get yum to access the right repository don't I? Or do I just download the appropriate rpm from RPMforge and install using rpm on the command line? Also, do I need to install anything else (module dependencies?) or will yum or rpm take care of that? If using both or neither, depends on whether you want to go with Axel's (ATrpms) kmdl approach (may have to wait for him to build new packages after a new kernel arrives) or with Dag's (RPMforge) dkms approach (rebuilds kernel modules on-the-fly - requires development environment to be present). Either is likely to be less complicated than trying to use the tarball, and both have the advantage of having the package manager handle updates to new firmware or drivers. I think you can find stuff with Google, for some WinModems, to get them to work on Linux.. As other posters pointed out, these are not true modems and normally require MS Windows to work. Inexpensive junk, installed into new low end boxes for end users. As another poster pointed out, an External Serial Modem will do the trick for you. I believe *any* External Serial Modem will work on Linux, but, I'm not positive of that. Lanny

RHEL5 and CentOS 5 root logins

I found, under a 64-bit CentOS 5 workstation install, it is possible to modify /etc/inittab and add a couple of lines to prevent root from logging into the console. I found, under a 64-bit RHEL 5 server install, adding the same two lines completely breaks the OS, to the point that a reboot after the lines are added, the OS brings you to a fsck-like prompt, and other things break, too. I didn't have time to look at the logs for specifics, if any were recorded. Does anyone know if a CentOS 5 server install option permits locking out root from console login? Does anyone know of a way, in RHEL 5 Server edition, to prevent root from a console login? Thanks. Scott

Hi, I have a CENTOS BOX as a firewall . both iptabes and iproute 2 are running on it. pls see bleow for installed RPMs. [root@firebox ~]# rpm -qa |grep iptables iptables-1.2.11-3.1.RHEL4 [root@firebox ~]# rpm -qa |grep iproute iproute-2.6.9-3.EL4.7 It has 3 ethernet cards. pls see below. eth0 - internet ip (pls asume. 1.2.3.4/29 ). it connects to ISP router. eth1 - 192.168.100.254 eth2 - 192.168.101.254 There are 2 LANs behind this firewall. both LANs have access to internet due to SNAT rules in the firewall. I have given many SNAT rules per ip basic. some users have full access, some have only web and smtp. I have added many forward rules to suit those SNAT rules. All work fine. one LAN is 192.168.100.0/24, while the other LAN is 192.168.101.0/24 Now, I want LAN with 192.168.101.0/24 to allocate 64 kbit out of 256 kbit. the rest for others. I added rules to the firewall. But I still can not allocate 64 kbit for LAN with 192.168.101.0/24 I think I need a PREROUTING chain for LAN with 192.168.101.0/24 Script is given below. I have a problem creating homedirs on the fly. Since RHEL5 / CentOS5 you have to use pam_oddjob_mkhomedir instead of pam_mkhomedir. Everything is working (the homedir is created) but two things. First on every logon I get the following error message, and I don't know how to fix it: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name com.redhat.oddjob was not provided by any .service files Second: The permissions of the new created homedir is wrong. It should be 700 but it is 755. Can anybody tell me, how to fix these two problems? Thanks Peter

Virtualisation of Netware?

Hi, I am hoping someone can kick me up the learning curve (!) on Virtualization: We have an old piece of data logging software that was written in Turbo Pascal 6 using a file I/O module tuned to Netware and so it expects its data files to be on a Netware server and will not access them locally or via an MS/Samba share - essentially, it uses direct NCP calls for parts of its data access. The logging software was replaced two years ago, but we need occasional access to the data for a minimum of 6 years and so I wondered whether I could virtualize a Netware 3.x/4.x/5.x or 6./x server under Linux (or Win..er..you know..). I have found some articles on Netware 6.5 virtualization but would really appreciate input from anyone actually doing this already - otherwise I'll just have to keep the existing Netware server in the computer room to be fired up about 3-4 times a year 'on demand'. For info, I'm running a Netware 6.5 1-user 'demo' licence - the original install was on Netware 3.12 until the server died and no-one could find the original Netware floppies! Thanks Nigel Kendrick

startup config scripts for CentOS

On CentOS-based VM appliance I'm building, I would like to create a script that runs upon login that asks the user a series of questions that does (among other things) ask them to input their networking information (IP, mask, gate, DNS, etc). I'm hoping you guys might point me in the right direction. Here are some of the specific things I'm looking to accomplish with such a script. (1) Where might I look to for creating these types of scripts (e.g. I'm assuming Bash is the way to go here?) (2) Are there any templates out there that I might use as a starting place? (3) Once I write something, where/how do I call it in /etc/rc.d/ (4) And once it starts, what is the best way to make sure that it doesn't run again upon the second (and subsequent) reboots? Ideally, someone could show me a model of something like this that's already done, and I could just mod that. Otherwise, I'll grind through something manually, if I so have to....

"near native" performance with xen?

Just wondering if there was a howto or other URL that explains what is needed to achieve "near native" performance on a xen domU -- for this purpose, I am thinking about a single domU running on a physical server, in comparison to that same physical server running the same kernel but non-xenified. For instance, using a physical partition for VBD v. using a file-backed one is one of the more obvious ones. Assigning all the VCPUs. And as much RAM as you can get away with (maybe leaving the dom0 with 512MB). But are there others? Since I'm doing paravirtualization, I assume I don't need to turn on VT in the BIOS? What about 32-bit v. 64-bit OS, for the dom0 and for the domU? (I'll be using CentOS-5.) Anything else? johnn

Yum install preferred arch only

I have a couple 64-bit CentOS 5 installations here and was wondering if there was a yum option to have it install only x86_64 arch by default if no arch is specified. I tired of having to append .x86_64 on all package names I only want the x86_64 versions of, if I want the i386 versions too I would add the .i386 package to the list... Thanks All, Ross S. W. CENTOS 4 and mono

Hello, Im trying to configure my centos machine to run webservices. Im using the mono repo from www.*mono*-project.com, for rhel-4. After configuring every thing, it all seemed to work fine with a simple webservice for testing purposes. For that, a friendo of mine created a vb webservice on a windows machine and I copied the all resulting files(asmx, dll, etc). When I access the webservice via GET, every thing works just fine. But when I do a POST, the mod-mono-server2.exe goes away :( Does anyone can help me to debug the problem? The apache logs doesnt help much. Thanks

For stability reasons, I'm running CentOS 4 for VMware (it's the devil I know). Are there any compelling reasons to upgrade to CentOS 5 for it? I'm relatively new to the whole virtualisation scene and perhaps there are some updated packages that might be good for VMware?
