Installing GCC 5.3.0 in CentOS 6 in Docker.

I need to compile some C++ 11 with GCC 5.3.0 on CentOS 6. All of this is happening inside docker in CI using the centos:6 base image. (NB. It can't be GCC 6 or 7, because I have to send binaries to clients who won't install newer vs of libstdc++.so.) Until recently, I was installing devtoolset-4-gcc-c++ via yum, and then using RUN scl enable devtoolset-4 gcc to build the code. Unfortunately, devtoolset-4 is no longer supported, so this has stopped working. I've been trying to compile GCC from scratch, but it's been running for hours and hours – even if I get it working, I'll have to replicate the whole process inside Docker and I suspect it will be very brittle. Is there any easy way of downloading a precompiled version? E.g. -- Is there something that I can do to go back to the old v. of Software Collections? Or -- Is there somewhere I might find a precompiled gcc 5 package? Thanks very much, Mohan

Lenovo Ideapad 320 touchpad not recognized

I'm setting up a new Lenovo Ideapad 320 and everything shows up and works fine except for the touchpad. I did have to get into the bios and set Legacy for boot device and boot mode to get Centos 7 to finish installing. The default bios settings would load the Centos 7 Gnome Live image from a usb flash drive and work (except for the touchpad) but when I tried to install to the hard drive it would get to the end of the process and kernel panic when it was writing the bootloader. Setting Legacy Boot in the bios solved that problem. I have run yum update so everything is up to date. But the touchpad doesn't show up at all. Unfortunately, that didn't change anything; xinput --list still doesn't show the touchpad. I have found references to some deb packages and fedora rpms that don't appear to exist for Centos 7: xorg-x11-drv-synaptics-legacy.x86_64 elantech-0608-dkms_0.2_all.deb I've pretty much run out of ideas. How to set macaddr with nmcli

I see my problem. I mis-read what nmcli con mod eth0 mac "02:67:15:00:81:0B" does. It sets HWADDR; which interface to link to, not MACADDR, what MAC address you want for your interface. So I have read the nmcli pages and googled a bit. I cannot find a way to set MACADDR. I suppose I can set HWADDR then use sed to change it to MACADDR, but this seems a real hack. ARM boards do not have assigned MAC addresses. Uboot uses various information to generate a local MAC address. I want finer control of my MAC address for my servers. In the past, I just edited ifcfg-eth0. I am trying now to do it all with nmcli. I thought I had it, but I misread the manual. Any pointers? thanks BTW, I remember setting MAC addresses on 3COM 3C501C boards because the old board died and we had software licensed to specific MAC addresses. So you had to specify your MAC address in the config file. The DEC admin had to do a similar thing if he had to swap out his LAN card (related: read up on why Dr. Comer set ARP timeout to 10min). Then there was that counterfeit 3C503C from Malaysia, all with the same MAC address. Caused havoc on the networks. EVERYONE had to specify their MAC address with those. 3COM did find the plant making these clones and shut them down. But the damage was done to a lot of us.

ifcfg-link?

This is happening with the Centos7-armv7 image 1804, but I was wondering if it is a broader C7 issue. My image has only 2 ifcfg files: ifcfg-l0 and -link. 'ip a' is listing the ethernet as eth0. ifcfg-link has contains: DEVICE=link BOOTPROTO=dhcp ONBOOT=on I then used nmcli to create my ifcfg-eth0 nmcli con delete eth0 nmcli con add type ethernet con-name eth0 ifname eth0 ip4 192.168.129.11/25 gw4 192.168.129.1 nmcli con mod eth0 ipv4.dns "50.253.254.2 192.168.129.1" nmcli con mod eth0 mac "02:67:15:00:81:0B" I moved the cable to the 192.168.129.1 vlan (which does not have a dhcp server), and nmcli con up eth0 Error: Connection activation failed: No suitable device found for this connection. Oops. ? rebooting did not help. Came up with no address for interface eth0, yet no suitable device. Where would I look to find what may be happening here? I appreciate that this may be specific to armv7 and my Cubieboard2, but then again, it may be something known by other Centos people. Thanks for any help!

NFS/RDMA connection closed

Hi, we are having a problem with NFS using RDMA protocol over our FDR10 Infiniband network. I previously wrote to NFS mailing list about this, so you may find our discussion there. I have taken some load off the server which was using NFS for backups, and converted it to use SSH, but we are still having critical problems with NFS clients losing connection to the server, causing the clients to hang and needing a reboot. I wanted to check in here before filing a bug with CentOS. Our setup is a cluster with one head node (NFS server) and 9 compute nodes (NFS clients). All the machines are running CentOS 6.9 2.6.32-696.30.1.el6.x86_64 and using the "Inbox"/CentOS RDMA implementation/drivers (not Mellanox OFED). (We also have other NFS clients but they are using 1GbE for NFS connection and, while they will still hang with messages like "NFS server not responding, retrying" or "timed out", they will eventually recover and don't need a reboot.) After these messages on the clients, their load will continually go up (viewable through Ganglia) (I would guess since they are waiting for NFS mount to re-appear). They aren't reachable any longer through SSH and neither can root log in through console via IPMI web applet (just hangs after entering password, may get to prompt eventually but system load is so high), they need to be rebooted through IPMI interface. Currently we are trying the IPoIB. We haven't started a cluster job yet so not sure how it will perform. With the NFS/TCP over 1GbE the server/nodes would hang from time to time but still did not crash at least, however was of course slow being limited by 1GbE. We haven't had this problem until recently. I upgraded our cluster to add the two additional nodes (n008 and n009) and we also added more storage to the server (/newwing and /working). The new nodes are AMD EPYC platform whereas the server and the nodes n001-n007 are Intel Xeon platform, not sure if that would cause such a crash. The new nodes were cloned from n001 and only kernel command line and network parameters were changed. The jobs are submitted to the cluster via Sun Grid Engine, and in total there are about 61 jobs that may start at once and open connections to the NFS server... it sounds like it is a system overload, although the load on the server remains low, under 10%, even as it hangs the load may increase to 80%. The server is a few years old but still has 2x 6-core Intel Xeon E5-2620 v2 @ 2.10GHz with 128GB of RAM. Would appreciate your assistance to troubleshoot this critical problem and, if needed, gather the required information to submit a bug to the tracker! Desktop lag with CentOS7/Mate and high CPU usage

We have noticed significant desktop/UI lag on CentOS7 workstations using Mate when the CPU usage is high - i.e. the mouse pointer lags and moving windows (e.g. terminal windows) become jumpy (not smooth) We didn't see (or notice) this issue with CentOS6/Gnome2 This can easily be shown by running something like 'cpuburn' (https://patrickmn.com/projects/cpuburn/) and moving a mate-terminal window around the screen We can make things 'better' by running CPU intensive apps via 'nice' (without any noticeable performance hit to the CPU intensive app) - but this is a rather messy way of fixing the issue We can also make things better by renice'ing X to a negative nice level However, both these approaches seem wrong to me - as I'm probably missing something straightforward here Does anyone know of any CentOS7/Mate settings that could be used to improve desktop/UI responsiveness with high CPU usage ? Screensavers on Centos-7

Hi all! I keep having problems with screensaver(s) on Centos-7. I have in the past liked Xscreensaver, so I've installed it and tried to suppress whatever other screensaver is on the system. Xscreensaver works fine for a day or 20 then quits working. After a lengthy battle I gave up and removed it. I'm now trying mate-screensaver, which does the same thing! when I say "quits working" I mean just that. one night it goes to a black screen (as configured) then a minute or two later the power manager shuts off the screen. The next night it does neither, and forever after. Sometimes after a reboot it'll work again for a while then it starts misbehaving again. First question: Anybody have any similar issues? Anybody have any ideas on what's going on here and what I can do about it? So, not being in a position to reboot, last night I killed mate-screensaver and mate-powermanager, with the hopes the daemons would restart themselves. No such luck. so I tried to figure out what programs I could run to get them started again. So far I'm too stupid to be able to figure that out, as well. Second question: Anybody able to clue me in on how the screensavers and power managers are managed/started? there isn't a systemctl module for it, as far as I can see. if I run mate-screensaver from the commandline (as me, not root) I get no prompt back, so I assume it's running silently, but it also doesn't blank the screen at the specified time. C7 Xfce group

I am working with Centos-arm which right now only has the gnome and kde desktops. I am spoiled with using Xfce on all my Fedora systems (MUCH longer battery life on my notebook, for example). I like its simplicity. I see from messages here that mainline C7 does have the Xfce desktop. Can someone give me a list of rpms that make up the group, so I can try starting with the minimal image and see if I can build an Xfce desktop? Meanwhile I am going to put in a request for Xfce on the centos-arm list. thanks

Finding user's files

This is among the things we need to do when a user leaves, and it's a larger question than it sounds. Our Office has many servers, with a good number of fileservers for projects, with large filesystems (i.e. 10's of TB). Can anyone think of a way *other* than running what's probably a many-hour long find / -user on all our systems, which is really intensive, to find all the files own by a given user? Locate would be great, but from the man pages and what I can find online, it only stores filenames and paths. mark

Below some background on this. [I have attached the tech details at the bottom of this message] I started a new CentOS7 installation on a VM, so far all good, o/s boots fine. Then I decided to increase VM disk size (initially was 10G) to 13G. Powered off the VM, increased the vhd via the hypervisor, booted from CentOS livecd, selected "recover my centos installation". Then I used the following sequence of commands to make the new vhd size "visible" to the o/s ... - ran fdisk /dev/sda and deleted partition 2. (This is the LVM partition where the o/s is stored. The first partition is /boot [xfs] partition *non lvm*.) - created a new partition with same starting sector as before deleting it, but a different ending sector (to reflect to the increased space). - set partition type to 8e (lvm), saved settings and exit. - ran pvresize and lvresize to make new space visible to the o/s.All good, I can see the space increase on 'lvdisplay centos/root'. - ran 'mount /dev/mapper/centos-root /mnt/root' to temporarily mount the o/s partition. - ran 'xfs_growfs /mnt/root' to resize the o/s fs to the new size. It was successful and I could actually chroot to the o/s and verify new disk size. - rebooted and tried to boot from hdd this time. Grub menu shows up and loads default kernel (3.10.0-862.9.1.el7.x86_64). - after initial kernel boot up process, booting continues to initrd and then it's where the problem starts... - looks like dracut has issues locating/enabling /dev/mapper/centos-root (lv) and as a result it cannot boot to the 'real' root fs (/). - while in dracut shell, I execute the following command sequence: 1. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/root 2. lvm lvchange -ay /dev/centos/swap 3. ln -s /dev/mapper/centos-root /dev/root 4. exit ...and the o/s boots fine...so looks like the pv,vg,lv is detected properly while in initrd, but somehow dracut has difficulties enabling the root,swap LVs ? - While in o/s, I rebuild initrd by using: 'dracut -f -v -a lvm' Note, I have to use '-a lvm' as for some reason, if don't, the lvm utils (lvm,lvm_scan) are not being included to the initrd, not sure why this happens. After rebooting, same thing happens, I have to manually boot the system via dracut shell. I'm a bit stuck at this point, any clues what I'm doing wrong in here ? I don't say how you do it is wrong, it's just easier/faster to do things while the system is online if downtime matters. I don't really know what causes your issues. The reason may be that I have more and more problems understanding the whole boot process and all the variants we used to have over more than two decades... But, what happens if you let the kernel post install scripts do the work or setting up the initrd things? If you reinstall the latest kernel, does it change anything? ecryptfs (from centosplus) and libvirt lxc quest on it - quest upon start shoots host in the head

hi guys I have a lxc guest on Dell's R815(AMD Opterons) which I just moved to an ecryptfs mounted folder(using centosplus' kernel) Copying data to that folder seems to work just fine, but I as soon as I start the quest the host gets shot in the head, hard reboot, no dump. I also have another, virtually identical guest but on Intel platform and that one does not do anything but runs okey. Any of you guys has experience such gross abnormality? many thanks, L.

Xfce vs. VirtualBox : font size problem

Hi, I'm running CentOS 7 with Xfce on my main workstation. I just installed VirtualBox, and the application is running nicely. The only problem is that VirtualBox fonts are too tiny. How can I make the application behave and use the system-wide font settings ? Therefore, we decided to buy four additional hard drives that should configured also as raid 10 (/dev/sdb). I want to use LVM to extend disk space for root and home. My (successful) test procedure in a virtual environment looks like this: 1. devide /dev/sdb into /dev/sdb1 for root and /dev/sdb2 for home using parted 2. Convert disk to physical volume: pvcreate /dev/sdb1 3. add physical volume to volume group (called centos): vgextend centos /dev/sdb1 4. Can anyone recommend a mailing list or other resource for finding a home for old server hardware? I've got a growing bone pile of retired Dell and Supermicro rack servers. I've stripped the drives and memory but hate to see the other old parts go to waste, like old RAID controllers and other proprietary parts.

Good evening from Singapore, I am torn between deploying Microsoft Exchange 2016 and Linux-based SMTP servers like sendmail, postfix, qmail and exim. Relative ease of installation and configuration is an important consideration factor. Microsoft Exchange 2016, Domain Controller, and Active Directory are relatively easy to install and configure. Linux-based SMTP servers are extremely difficult to install and configure and of course, extremely time-consuming. One of the features of Microsoft Exchange 2016 is that you can create additional folders on your Inbox in the server (server-side). Can Linux-based SMTP servers do that? Does Exchange 2016 offer more user-friendly features or Linux-based SMTP servers? Besides the above considerations, how about security? Traditionally, Linux is far more secure than Windows. Judging by security, Linux-based SMTP servers ought to have a higher percentage of the market share? Finally, I can only use Windows Server 2016 Standard Evaluation Copy FREE for a period of 3 years MAXIMUM. But I can use Linux servers and Mail Transport Agents (MTA) FREE perpetually. Please advise. Finding memory usage

I have a CentOS 7 server that is running out of memory and I can't figure out why. Running "free -h" gives me this: total used free shared buff/cache available Mem: 3.4G 2.4G 123M 5.9M 928M 626M Swap: 1.9G 294M 1.6G The problem is that I can't find 2.4G of usage. If I look at resident memory usage using "top", the top 5 processes are using a total of 390M. The next highest process is using 8M. For simplicity, if I assume the other 168 processes are all using 8M (which is WAY too high), that still only gives a total of 1.7G. The tmpfs filesystems are only using 18M, so that shouldn't be an issue. Yesterday, the available memory was down around 300M when I checked it. After checking some things and stopping all of the major processes, available memory was still low. I gave up and rebooted the machine, which brought available memory back up to 2.8G with everything running. How can I track what is using the memory when the usage doesn't show up in top? -- Bowie

C7, just updated firefox, bugs

I just updated the "critical" firefox update, and it is *seriously* buggy. 1. I killed my old session, and started a new. Many (all?) tabs show *nothing* until I put my cursor in the URL bar and hit <enter> 2. I cannot open a link in an email in thunderbird. I click the link, and after a bit (30 sec? more?) a small windows tells me that firefox is running, but not responding, which it certainly responds when I focus on firefox. mark

In some cases it becomes some kind of "undefined" or at least I'm not able to print it out in a report (in "r1:"). In the configuration file above I marked some lines with "BEGIN/END big shit". Between the BEGIN/END I commented out two lines. If I "run" with that configuration file I see the reports "r1:" and "r4:" but not "r2:" and "r3:". It's not clear to me why I don't see reports "r2:" and "r3:", but I'm interested in the value of $(info.info_list)" in "r1:", I only have "r2:" and "r3:" here to maybe help to localize the problem which is described later. I'm using that slist to collect some system info and then printing out the report and it would NOT be a problem if some system informations were missing but it IS a problem that in some cases the whole slist becomes undefined and in that situation I receive a completly empty report "r1: ". Is decoupling Apache + PHP into separate nodes possible?

<preamble> I have deployed Linux/Apache/PHP (node1) + MySQL (node2) with Security Groups (AWS) or iptables controlling who can connect to the MySQL server. In topology terms -- a 2 Tier architecture. In AWS - one can deploy several such instances behind a ELB. Each LAP instance talks to a MySQL RDS. The LAP instances are either mod_php or PHP-FPM. OS -- CentOS, Ubuntu. Debian </preamble> For one of my client's end user customer, their InfoSec team is asking if Apache and the PHP application can run in separate nodes (3 Tier arch). To the best of my knowledge Apache + PHP (mod_php) have to be in the same node. With PHP-FPM it is conceivable to have Apache talk to PHP-FPM running on a separate node (see diagram https://goo.gl/xTfbjg) But I have not done it myself and I am not sure if it is feasible. If it is feasible then what's the best practice to distribute the *.html *.css and *.php files between the Apache + the PHP-FPM nodes and how to achieve load balance between Apache and PHP-FPM nodes. I have searched but not found any reference setups. Would appreciate suggestions / references from anyone who has done a 3 Tier Apache + PHP + MySQL deployment in production. SCLO: Clang 5 package

Hi, a new version of llvm toolset was released on RHEL including clang 5 several months ago: https://developers.redhat.com/blog/2018/05/03/announcing-ga-for-latest-soft… devtoolset 7.1 (gcc 7.3) was announced around the same time and has been in CentOS sclo repo for some time now, but still no sign of clang 5. Is this on anyone's to do list? llvm toolset contains a really convenient version of clang / clang-format, which I believe many developers are using daily for various tools. Clang 5 is required for C++17 support, so a prompt update would be highly appreciated. Sorry if this is not the correct mailing list. Best regards Tim

Mail has quit working

Hello, Mail has come to an abrupt stop. Running C7, postfix and dovecot. Using Roundcube as the client. Mail stopped working Saturday and I cannot figure was has happened. I have not touched this server except to upgrade packages. I believe Roundcube was updated maybe a week ago but know I was getting mail since then. Crond is no longer send mail. I checked /var/spool/mail as well as /Maildir in home directories. Zero byte files. Checked all logs and the only thing I could find was in /var/log/maillog : warning hostname localhost does not resolve to address 127.0.0.1 I corrected that by changing inet_interfaces to localhost from all in postfix.cf When I try to log in with Roundcube, it just times out. I'm stuck! TIA for any suggestions!!

FF60 does not allow download to ssh/davs

Hello All, this concerns fully updated Centos7 / Mate machines; I have people connect to ssh en davs locations. In /home/user/.gtk-bookmarks I put entries like ssh://192.168.1.8/data data-remote People can then click on the bookmark in the file manager and connect to it. Since FF60 people can no longer save files for instance from their mailbox to these "mounted" locations. Before, when choosing "save as", the mounted ssh location would appear in the download window. I guess this is not a bug but something one can disable/enable in about:config. Many thanks for any advise on this. greetings, J.

bad text under KDE and C7

I recently installed C7 from a C7+gnome CD. Gnome was awful enough that I promptly installed KDE. KDE is not doing so well either. Text in text editors invoked by "opening" a file is flakey at best. E.g. pieces disappear and duplicate. Terminals seem ok, including vim invoked from the terminal. Firefox text seems ok. The sidebar text in file-browser windows often has "black tape" over it, usually completely covering text. The file names are ok. Hi, I just migrated my workstation running CentOS 7 from KDE to MATE. It looks like I'm having the same problem with the Caja file manager than with Dolphin. Folder contents don't get refreshed automatically, and I have to hit F5. For example, when I download a file (say, a compressed archive) from the Internet, I have to hit F5 to see the file in Caja. And when I extract the archive, I have to hit F5 again. Anybody knows where this nagging problem comes from? Centos 7 - Canon Powershot A410

I have an old Canon Powershot A410 camera that used to just work with Centos 6. All I had to do was install Shotwell and forever after I could just plug that camera in and Shotwell would automatically load and all was well. I'm now trying to get that camera to work on Centos 7, but am having no success. Or do I need 2 static public IP addresses at the minimum? With Exchange 2016 groupware taking up HTTP, HTTPS, IMAP, IMAPS, POP3, POP3S, SMTP, and SMTP/S ports, I personally don't think I can deploy cPanel behind the same public IP as Exchange. Logwatch inconsistency

Hi all, In my logwatch config I clearly state only too report on Yesterday. The funny thing is that in the MailScanner section the number of mails scanned is different thant th number reported in the postfix section to be put on hold. Ik I grep the Requeue statements in the MailScanner logfile this is exactly the same number as the scan result of Hold in the postfix logfile and is equal to the number reported by logwatch in the MailScanner section. How come postfix reports a lot more being put on hold than the real number? There is at least some inconsistency in there. Firefox 60 crashes when trying to save an image

On any web page with an image, if i right-click on the image and select "Save Image As...", firefox crashes. Panic with EL7 KVM guest on EL6 host on AMD server with latest kernel

Hi, I have AMD servers running CentOS 6.10 as KVM host and on it guests running CentOS 7.5. Since the latest kernel update on CentOS 6.10, kernel-2.6.32-754.2.1.el6.x86_64, I can't boot the CentOS 7.5 guests with kernel-3.10.0-862.6.3.el7.x86_64 anymore. Reverting CentOS 6.10 host to kernel-2.6.32-754.el6.x86_64 fixes the problem. Screendump of the panic is attached, not very helpful I guess. The CPU models where I could test it are: cpu family : 15 model : 65 model name : Dual-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2218 stepping : 3 cpu family : 16 model : 6 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) II Neo N36L Dual-Core Processor stepping : 3 Didn't test on newer CPU family yet. Clamd issues on Centos 6.10

Hello all, Been having an issue today that I can't seem to solve, so reaching out to others much more knowledgeable for help/advice/assistance. I ran the software update this morning and installed 134 packages, clamd was one of the packages. Upon completion of the update, I needed to reboot the box. I tried deleting the mirrors,dat file and re-running freshclam (did not reboot the box between file deletion and command line execution), no effect... Also, I have the default mirror location in freshclam.conf, which seems to be fine considering its been like this for years. I tried to locate the 'country code' paramater but gave that up after I got a headache looking over the documentation. I don't think its relevant to this issue anyway. I'm stuck on how to fix this. Nothing on the web shows what resolution is, nor how to fix it. Seems like I can get and receive emails, but I have no idea if they are being properly scanned. Thanks in advance, Jay

It is most likely because Firefox 60 uses a 'private' gtk3 runtime (which includes its own fontconfig set up) on el6 - as el6 uses gtk2 natively I've reported this problem at: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1601475 James Pearson

FF 60.1 can't print pages to files...

Yet another issue with this new browser. If I look at a web page and try to print it to a file, FF crashes. CentOS 6.10 Going back to FF 52.8. This new version is just unworkable for me. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MzK "Less is MORE."
