I have this really short script below that only lets me set the font size from 5 to 50 using the slider at the bottom. Anything higher than 50 it will not do. run the program as "wish -f file.tcl" Why can I not increase the font size - using the slider bar at the bottom to anything higher than 50??? Does this work for anyone else? Using xlsfonts there are sizes higher than 50. Someone suggested in an earlier thread about possibly splitting this list (by release or some other topical divide), and it was suggested that people use list filters to extract the topics (release 5.0 was the one mentioned) of interest. I may have gone to the wrong place, but I did go to the mailing list subscription control page for mine, and there are no topics defined on which one may filter. Did I miss something there, or is this more of a local, DIY mail filter suggestion? converting system to raid1

Hello, I've got a single-drive CentOS5 system with two partitions on it, a 101 mb boot, and the rest of the disk as an lvm volume, two partitions in it, / and swap. I've got another disk, same size, and i'd like to add it in as a primary slave drive and convert this system to raid1 for redundancy. I do not want to reinstall this box, which is what the docs i've read say it's easiest to do. Some elude to a procedure, hard yes, time consuming with copying probably, that can do it. Has anyone done this? Thanks. Dave.

I have the 6 CDs for CentOS 5, and I have installed it on a couple of computers without any problem. I just tried to create a virtual machine under VMware 5.5.4, it goes through the 1st CD without problem, and crashes on the 2nd CD for Xorg. Vsftpd & Iscsi - fast enough

To extend space on our 64-bit centos FTP servers, we are considering setting them up to work with an existing PromiseRAID system via iscsi. -just curious if anyone here knows if iScsi is fast enough to serve up all the images? -might it be something where we get dedicated cards and put the iScsi traffic on its own Vlan? Just curious if this would hold up under alot of traffic, like weather images and the like... -karl

iptables patch-o-matic

Hi, I am trying to install some additional iptables modules on a CentOS 5 Box (imq, tarpit, geoip). Can anyone recommend a version of patch-o-matic-ng that works well with the CentOS 5 kernel sources (2.6.18-8.1.4)? The most current version (patch-o-matic-ng-20070521.tar.bz2) does not compile. With patch-o-matic-ng-20061128.tar.bz2 I could at least get tarpit working but geoip and imq seem to be missing. Did anyone build these on CentOS 5? java packages - tomcat5?

Have the jpackage-packaged things like tomcat5 been moved into the disto repositories? Do they work with sun java? In particular, tomcat5 used to require jta. The one yum installs doesn't mention it now, but it also doesn't work with sun java 1.5 installed the jpackage way. What am I missing? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Hi All, I installed clam on CentOS 5 as below. yum install clamav clamav-db clamd I got them form Dag. below are the RPMS I installed. a2ps bug in 4.5?

Hi, My desktops which have gone from 4.4 tot 4.5 (i386) have a problem with a2ps. 'a2ps file.txt' dumps to the terminal instead of to the printer. 'a2ps -P printername file.txt' dumps to a file 'printername' 'lpr' still seems to work correctly. Any ideas about what can cause this? Hello! I need to download updates and install it on several servers. I don't want to mirror all packages just because traffic is expensive here. We use apt-cacher as specialized proxy for our ubuntu desktops, so we download packages only once. Is there similar tool for yum?

Is there a way to force regeneration of the weak-upgrades? I guess there should be a script that does or triggers this in the (new)kernel rpm. Login problem on CentOS 4.4 GDM

I have just restructured my system (repartitioned the main disk to separate /home from /) and I am now getting this error when I try to log in as a non-root user: Your session only hasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or you may be out of disk space. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessoions to see if you can fix this problem. I can log in via ssh or as root, but I don't know what to fix. Since I can log in via ssh, I am assuming that I have enough disk space (there's plenty everywhere), so I'm thinking a config problem, but what? Apple hfs mounting help. OT maybe?

I am running a CentOS 3 server with a kernel version -2.4.21-40. I typically use Webmin to accomplish mounting varied filesystems, but this one has me buffaloed. We have a Thecus N5400 that was mounted on a Mac and a ton of data was written to it. All of the data was placed in yearly folders with content-related folders below the yearly folders. When I mount this through Webmin as an smbfs mount, all I see are these files that look something like .Apple01 and some index files. (sorry this was done yesterday, I couldn't leave the network configured and in place to connect to the N5400, and don't remember exactly what it showed). So I assume this is the way the Mac wrote the filesystem. When I try to mount it as an Apple hfs, I get a message that the fs type is not supported by this kernel. Might anyone have a clue as to how I can get this mounted to show me the real data the way it looks on the Mac. All I really need to do is to change the mod recursively so that older yearly folders are read only. The web interface for the N5400 has this option, but it only works on the top level yearly folder and not the secondary folders below. Thanks for any help and I apologize for what could be OT. Hogwash! Never trust anything in a wiki. They can make up anything they like. With computers, it is always base 2 not 10. All your computer commands are going to give one base 2 numbers even disk drive space. Yes, the disk drive and probably tape drive manufactures are cheating you when they say MB as they mean base 10, but they know full well it is suppose to be base 2. It is like the monitor manufacturers who started measuring the plastic case and quoting that as the screen size. It is really a 15" monitor but with 2" of plastic, they call it 17".

Below is a small script - ran by "wish -f file.tcl" When I run this script and move the slider bar at the bottom on centos 4 x86_64 I get increasing font sizes from 5 to 49. Anything 50 and after is all the same size. How do I get bigger fonts? How to install the devsys after the fact

I'm running with CentOS 4.3 and the system was setup originaly with no development system and no kernel sources. I'm trying to get the headers and libraries installed and it is giving me fits. I've followed the suggestions on several threads and tried to yum install gcc, kernel-headers, kernel-devel but I seem to not be able to get /usr/include or use/include/sys packages... don't know what they're called even. Has anyone succesfully installed these things after the OS and can you please point me at some howtos or docs on how it's done? Any help gratefuly appreciated. Cheers! --p

I have a simply script that I cannot get a font size bigger than 40. Changing the font_size value to 80 does not make the font any bigger just the background. How do I get a bigger font than 40? I run this script as "wish -f file.tcl" What am I doing wrong to not get bigger fonts? After upgrading from 4.4 to 4.5 the ncpmount comand scripts used to backup the netware serevrs fails to mount. The error is: ncpmount: No such device in mount(2) Anybody else having this issue? Thanks -Jay

Hi, One nice thing I have with Debian is the possibility to have a really stripped-down install of things. Let's take an example. I want a cholesterol-free install of GNOME, I 'apt-get install gnome-core' which gives me the bare working minimum of GNOME as a starting point, and then I install what I really need. The same thing applies for KDE, with 'apt-get install kde-core'. Having such a thing would be great on CentOS. Currently, 'yum groupinstall <group>' tends to install many things. What do you think? Installing to other than "/" label

I have a system with Fedora installed on the partition with label "/". Can I install CentOS on a new empty partition (/dev/cciss/c0d3p1), or do I need to remove the "/" label on the Fedora partition and change Fedora's fstab to mount by physical partition? I'd like to keep Fedora as a fall-back OS until I have CentOS completely up and working. Hi, I have access to remote VMware ESX server. Don't really know what the underlying hardware is. Looked at a few dmesg results. As always there is a bunch of stuff I understand and a bunch more that I don't understand. I'd really like to know if it's a 64 Bit CPU, before I create my next VM. pygrub cannot find kernel

I just installed a CentOs 5 domU system on a CentOS 5 dom0 system following the instructions detailed here: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Xen/InstallingCentOSDomU. The installation went through successfully. After installation, however, pygrub can't find a kernel. Where can I find a list of supported USB printers for Centos5? We're looking to add a printer to our system that can print out a full 8.5x11 sheet that has a peel off label on it. So I need something supported, and I need to figure out what to use to spit this stuff out. Strange behaviour from http install

The Symptoms; ============= While watching a CentOS5 install hammer my webserver ( i used "askmethod' to point the machine to the webserver) i noticed a bunch of 404s; 10.1.1.119 - - [22/May/2007:15:01:53 +1200] "GET /cd/1/CentOS/termcap-5.5-1.20060701.1.noarch.rpm HTTP/1.1" 404 319 "-" "urlgrabber/3.1.0" and the installation failed to get started (the same file re-requested over and over) The Cause: ========== I had set my webserver up to serve the iso for centos 5 on /cd/0 and the sme_server7 iso on /cd/1 and the centos 4 iso on /cd/2 (/cd/3 is there, but not mounted to anything) Even though i used server : 10.1.1.8 path : cd/0 the centos 5 installation (anakonda?) seems to have gone up a folder, seen the 1,2,3 dirs and asked for .discinfo on the following paths; /cd/0 /cd/1 /cd/2 /cd/3 Upon finding .discinfo in folders /2 and /3 it has then got all confused (not enough to crash as both sme server and centos 4 are familiar file structures i guess?) and then asked the server for wrong versions of files (again and again in an endless loop) Removing the confusion ( umount /var/www/html/cd/1 ;umount /var/www/html/cd/2 ) solved the problem and everything went smooth after that Just thought i would let people know :) Out of curiousity, does anyone know the cause of this? I imagine it is some kind of fuzzy logic to do its best to recover from paths that are one folder too short/long, or maybe to make sure it is installing the highest version numbered folder? MrKiwi

The compile finished with no apparent errors. When I ran 'make xconfig' I selected 'm' for ne2000 support so that it would create a module. I used the find command to search in /home/cs/redhat for ne.ko and it was not found. I greped the .config file for the relevant lines: The command I used and the output are as follows: grep ISA /home/cs/redhat/SOURCES/kernel-2.6.18-`uname -m`.config | grep -v HISAX | grep -yv disable CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA=y # Bus options (PCI, PCMCIA, EISA, MCA, ISA) CONFIG_ISA_DMA_API=y # CONFIG_ISA is not set # CONFIG_EISA is not set # CONFIG_ISAPNP is not set CONFIG_NET_ISA=y # Wireless 802.11b ISA/PCI cards support # CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_AVMB1_B1ISA is not set # CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_AVMB1_T1ISA is not set # ISA-based Watchdog Cards CONFIG_I2C_ISA=m # CONFIG_I2C_PCA_ISA is not set # ISA devices I also greped for NE2000 in the same file: CONFIG_NE2000=m I am 99% sure that I entered 'y' for ISAPNP and ISA support and 'm' for ne2000. I am more than willing to recompile again and double check the settings after I have run 'make xconfig'. But before doing that, is there a way to limit which kernels in the i686 group are compiled? If it can be limited to one (ie. exclude xen, PAE etc.), then the compile will not take nearly as long. I've been having a similar problem and wanted to provide what hopefully is additional useful information. Like the original poster, things seem OK when booting with the network active. However, network access is extremely slow and timeouts are likely. If I do a service network stop, everything slows down, and keyboard and mouse activity is likely to be dropped. I also get error output which is included below. Booting with irqpoll doesn't seem to have any effect. Of note is that my ethernet driver (r1000) is source built, not a driver included with the build. However, this driver was fine under CentOS 4.4. Let me know what other information may be useful. Centos5, Compiz, and Nvidia

Hi! Just did a TEST install of centos5 on an old PIII box. one of the things I wanted to see was the fancy desktop eye-candy of compiz and/or beryl. This box has a nvidia 6600 series card, and I've isntalled the Nvidia drivers (download from nvidia and run their installer). I used the software updater to install compiz (didn't show up on original install, perhaps I didn't hold my tongue the right way. :) So, how do I run compiz? Found "enable desktop effects", click it, and it says "could not enable desktop effects". Not very informative. From a command line, just type "compiz" and it comes back with "no sync extension". Anyone know what else I need to do? I am trying to use zenity --progress. When I use this script: #!/bin/sh ( echo "10" ; sleep 1 echo "20" ; sleep 1 echo "50" ; sleep 1 echo "75" ; sleep 1 echo "100" ; sleep 1 ) | zenity --progress ~ It works fine... When I use a little program. for(count = 0; count <= 100; count += 10) { printf(stdout, "%d\n", count); sleep(1); } and run it as "myprog | zenity --progress" I dont get anything updating until the end and the program exits. Why does the second example not work. Both are just piping stdout into zenity. Both use carriage return. Thanks, Jerry

I thought I had all the tools I needed for this, but it seems something is missing. CentOS-5 - kmod-gfs dependency issue?

Hi all, I'm wondering if I'm running into some dependency issues on my CentOS5 test-machines. I've installed with a fairly minimal package set, updated, removed old kernels and am now experimenting with iscsi and gfs. I think I need kmod-gfs to get gfs -support, but there is only a version that suits the base-kernel, 2.6.18-8.el5. " [root@node02 ~]# yum install kmod-gfs (...) trying to run sshd daemon in kickstart environment

Hi, I tried to make kickstart environment a little bit more charming by firing up openssh daemon in the limited environment. I edited/checked a bunch of files and almost succeeded but still not. I can reach the machine to run a command like 'ssh -x <kickstartClient> <command>' and it does work for %pre and both chroot and non-chroot %post sections, in fact, you can run a command on kickstartClient through ssh connections without problems. But it still fails because I can not ssh into the kickstartClient to get a local command shell. In short, 'ssh -x <kickstartClient>' fails, 'ssh -x <kickstartClient> <command>' works. Any one has succeeded in this topic? Life will be much happier if we can freely turn on/off sshd daemon for Kickstart environment. Thanks. --Guolin

display pop up message on X

Is there a method to display pop up messages on X display? I found xmessage, however I was hoping for something a little more flexible. like being able to tell xmessage to display a file (typically one line in the file). then send it a signal to tell it to re-read the file and show the new data. Sure I can kill it and re-show it but that isnt very nice... Is there something available in centos 5 for this that I dont know about? Thanks Jerry

Following the update this morning, NTP is failing with the same symptoms that I saw several years ago (pre-CentOS, I believe) when Anaconda mistakenly blessed my ASUS A7N8X, Athlon (CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ stepping 00) based system with an SMP kernel. The symptom is that NTPD never establishes sync with a server, showing over the top jitter values. Rebooting into the previous kernel restores the operation this machine has enjoyed for the last couple years, quickly settling on an external source. (The following was copied after an extended period of time but the fact is that I have to really rush to boot, startx, open a root terminal and enter the commands before ntp stabilizes like this.)
