[OT] External RAID storage / NAS

Hello List, I need storage for my home network - lots of storage. It's going to hold pictures, home movies, music, other bits of data, etc. I'm looking to start at about 500 GB, but I'd need to eventually grow that to 1 TB, or more. I also want something that is quiet, has hot swappable drives (not necessary, but a plus), is fairly easy to manage, and can be directly attached to the network. Obviously, it has to work with Linux distros, and support NFS. I've done some research, and so far the ReadyNAS NV+ looks to be the best. Is there anything else similar to the ReaddyNAS NV+? I currently have an Arena Aiby v2 for my small business/home office, but it's LOUD, cannot be directly attached to the network, big, and uses PATA drives. It's also leased, so instead of buying it out at the end and moving it to personal use, I just want to let it go when the lease is up. All recommendations welcome. Why new "SCSI" devices in 4.5 kernel?

I've been running CentOS 4.4 on my Thinkpad 600E machine. Now the new 2.6.9-55 kernel wants to support the SCSI devices I don't have. After the 4.4 --> 4.5 update, on the reboot kudzu informed me that it had detected my PIIX4 controller. Well, OK. That same chipset has been in this machine for 10 years, but if the OS wants to re-detected it that's fine with me. Here, finally, is my question: why is my limited system RAM being wasted with device drivers I don't need? It occurs to me that maybe CentOS 4.5 wants to handle my CD-ROM as a SCSI device. Is that done with plain old CD readers? This Sanyo CRD-S372B is far to old to actually write CDs and would probably burst into flames if I put a DVD disk into it. So... any thoughts as to the sudden appearance of this SCSI support? Thanks.

I looked on the mirrors and could not find rpmdevtools. yum install rpmdevtools does not install it either. Where can I find rmpdevtools? Any way to run openssh daemon on a kickstart client (stage2)?

Hi, Any one have succeeded in firing up a sshd daemon when a machine is being kickstarted? I know VNC can be setup to minitor the kickstart process, but it is too limited and so I can not see the console and other screens with ALT+Fn keys. If sshd daemon can be setup at this stage, then we can remotely ssh into the being kickstarted client(s). and directly see what things happen during %pre, %post and other stages. cannot label a lightscribe disk

Hi I am having problems labelling a lightscribe disc in a Lacie USB2.0 interface CD/DVDW. I am running CENTOS 5.0 I can read and write cds and DVDs including DLs without any problems. Both xcdroast and k3b detect the unit as TSSTcorp-CD/DVDW SH-S162L Lacie's 4L software unfortunately doesn't detect any unit with either the gui interface or the cli interface. Oddity with 4.5 and linode.com

I just did a "yum update" on my linode instance to update from 4.4 to 4.5. That worked just fine. But on reboot it took 3 minutes to do the "checking for new hardware" stage. I initially thought that's because of a new release, so I did another reboot. That also took 2 minutes. OK, a minor issue (I don't reboot often) but... dunno if this is a UML issue or a linode specific issue, but 2 minutes in kudzu is a little odd! -- rgds Stephen

Problem reading smbfs mounted filesystems

Mounted smbfs directories/files using line in fstab (CentOS 4.4) - mounts OK, but when I attempt to open files, I get the message "Error loading document ..... The operation on <document> was started with an invalid parameter". Any help appreciated please. Thanks, Andy

Crazy idea for a portable CentOS installation

I've got CentOS up and running on my hp pavilion laptop. There wasn't enough space on the internal hard drive to shrink the NTFS partition and install CentOS there, and I didn't want to go through the exercise of copying everything to a new larger internal drive until I knew 5 was going to work, so it's installed on an external USB drive -- except for /boot which had to be on the internal drive in order for grub to properly dual-boot XP and CentOS. Now the thought occurs to me: Is there some way I can easily carry this external drive to another machine, plug it in, and boot up the same CentOS installation? There are two constraints: (1) There is no /boot on this drive, so I have to re-create that, and (2) I don't want to have the /etc configuration that works with my laptop destroyed by whatever kudzu finds on any other machine I might plug in to, so I need a separate /etc. Which leads to my question: Can I somehow: * copy /boot and /etc onto separate partitions on either this USB drive or a thumb drive [let's say a thumb drive for clarity in the rest of this paragraph], and * re-run grub to install a boot loader on the thumb drive, such that * the end result is that when I boot the laptop from the internal disk with the CentOS USB plugged in, I get exactly what I have now, but * when I boot from the thumb I get the root from the CentOS USB with the thumb /boot and /etc mounted over it? Kudzu could thus do whatever it needs to for the current hardware in the thumb /etc, without changing the original /etc, but everything else would be exactly as it is when I boot the laptop. Is there any chance at all this will work? I assume to change the boot device and reassign the /boot and /etc mount points I'll have to boot from the rescue CD. I've never done a grub reinstall by hand before (always used lilo in the past) so I'd appreciate pointers to the specifics of doing that for CentOS 5.

I was surprised to see a big list of updates and feared an upgrade to centos 4.5 or 5.0 so I stopped the process with CTRL+C. Hi, today I did a yum upgrade and see that there was 193 packages to update and 3 packages to install... I always upgraded my server (with yum) on a weekly basis so I don't undestand how it is possible to have a so big update. Is there something wrong with my yum setup ? A mix between different versions of CentOS ? I'm running CentOS 4 i386 Thank you

I could swear that this was working just last week, but now when I run the Adobe Acrobat reader, it hangs. If I run it "directly" (/usr/bin/acroread) with -DEBUG as the first argument, I get an infinite loop of: expr: syntax error I tried removing and reinstalling it, but no change. When creating a VMWare client that is Cent OS 5, the default SCSI disk is not recognized by the installer. Any suggestions for getting a disk on a COS5 client? Possible alternatives: 1) IDE disk, seems to work fine, 2) ??. Follow up to choice 1, is there a performance hit? While I have you, what is the best choice for "Guest Operating System".? And here is what the situation is : 1) There is a functional Alpha available at my home. 2) I am not interested in doing any of the porting work but will be happy to help with some parts of the testing. So, now the situation is - how many people are really interested ? And if there is enough interest - how many people really want to put in the efforts ( and have the know how ) to work on this ? Hi All, I had a box centos5 AMD64 X2 4200+, Asus motherboard, Nvidia 7100 video card, 512M, when playing a video at 1080p it did well but had a couple times went out of sync. So amd dropped its price and I got a 5200+, gigabyte motherboard, Nvidia 7100 video card, 512M. This FASTER system is actually slower. The video is WAY behind on sync. I have looked at the X config they are the same. I have the same mplayer version I have the same centos 5 version The CPU usage is actuall below 60. I ran "cpuspeed -C &" on both boxes /proc/cpuinfo on both boxes report the correct values. 4200+, 512cache, clocked at 2200 5200+ 1024 cache, clocked at 2600 What can be causing the faster machine to SUCK so bad at playing the video back? Only thing I can think of is I installed perl 5.8.8 from centosplus repo in the last week for Spamassassin purposes and it snagged some mysql stuff at same time. If I do a minimal centos 5 install Then if I do a yum -y update then if I do a yum groupinstall "Development Tools" "Development Libraries" (is that syntax right, it works)? both are installed yet if I yum grouplist this is all that shows up as installed even though both are installed Installed Groups: Development Libraries System Tools Dialup Networking Support Network Servers Mail Server If I check to see if I can install them individually after that they both say there are installed and up to date. :-) Just wondering if it was something that needs to be addressed as a minor inconvenience or pretty output type bug thanks -- Abba Communications Spokane, WA www.abbacomm.net

CentOS 4.4 on Thinkpad T30

I installed CentOS 4.4 on an old T30 I had lying around using a slightly modified kickstart file that I use to install on desktop systems. I had to manually fix the resolution for X, but everything appears to work fine out of the box otherwise. Except for two issues: o After a period of inactivity (> 30 minutes), the laptop will go to sleep and I can not wake it up other than a hard reset/reboot. o If I pull the network cable, almost every command hangs (this is with a local account, although the system is configured for NIS); if I reconnect the network, the hanging commands complete (I've tried running strace, but that hangs as well). I think the second issue also happens on my desktop systems, so it's not related to the laptop itself, but it is more likely that a laptop be used off the network. Any suggestions? Alfred

I have a USB disk and when I turned it on in the past, it's icon would appear on my GUI Desktop. Now it is no longer visible. Greets, Ummmmm never had one b4... picked up a new 4 Gig SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB 2.0 Flash Drive to play with. Dunno if I will keep it or not. I am mostly interested in using it with CentOS of course. Ummmmm it comes with like 120 meg of non linux apps and stuff on it. Can I dust that garbage and just reformat this unit to boot with CentOS or?? Been around for a long time, know google exists etc and how to search etc, yet I wanted to hit the list and see if I could prompt for some CentOS list wisdom about dealing with this from a CentOS Linux perspective. :-) Im thinking putting the CentOS DVD on it and using it for installs among other things... maybe get one for 4.x and 5.x etc :-) Please share your stupid cruzer tricks!!! Hi all, since I'm installing several copies of CentOS I was thinking of using some system to save bandwidth. I started looking at mrepo, but I noticed that, if I let him sync with updates and rpmforge repos, I'll end with a _lot_ of unneeded files. Also I have to modify the various yum repos configuration files for it to work. What I would like to achieve is just download the same file only once: does anyone know if there is something like a "yum proxy-cache" or if it is possible to instruct squid to caches at least the rpm's and to serve them regardless of the server (by default yum uses a server list, so it would be nice to have the system working without having to fiddle too much with config files) tia Lorenzo

We are in the process of transiting from 4.4 to 5.0 and I may need to be able to switch back and forth for a while. Is it possible (or advisable) to run both 4.4 and 5.0 on the same machine, or does that involve a lot of reinstalling/repartitioning and a fair amount of pain (I have only one disk on the test machine for this purpose). I'd rather just go to 5.0, but that's not up to me at the moment. Looking to cluster an FTP server. Right now we do a mix of stuff where we use a few separate servers linked through various hacks, that utilizes VSFTPd heavily for hundreds of television station news websites, where, of course, the current weather maps get uploaded from everywhere, all day, from NOAA and the like. I'd like to move from the current setup to something that's more HA oriented, -is GFS and option in Centos and is it viable to make an FTP server setup like this? (please no responses about SFTP, I use that too on other servers and yes, prefer it even if it slows things down). Hardware is not an issue, just curious about what some of you sage folk might have experimented with, and possibly have put into production. A google search turned up relatively empty, so hopefully this isn't one of those questions that gets a collective "huh?". Essentially am just trying to get away from the many separate machines I use now where I have to clone entries from /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow all over the place. Bonus: I have an ISCSI NAS device/promiseraid, so perhaps there's an option there instead of doing GFS I could grab a slice of space that way and just have one server with a huge amount of space? It doesn't answer point of failure totally, but... -krb

To my surprise, I was seeing the same activity on two logical volumes (LV) and the physical disk containing the two. A little investigation showed that one LV was a snapshot of the other, and I was reading from one of the snapshots. While I understand that the two LVs share some common Logical Extents (LE), I believe it is a bug that the disk statistics show the activity on both logical volumes. Should I report this in the centos bugzilla or upstream's bts? Thanks, Mike Fedyk

Using Xen under CentOS 5.0

OS: CentOS 5.0 x86. I have an internal modem with a driver that works with CentOS 4.x but not with 5.0. So I am thinking of using Xen in conjunction to SL 4.x. My question is, does this require separate physical partitions for SL 4.x, or will these be part of a VM file or something with CentOS 5.0 as a host?

Squirrelmail Problem on CentOS 4.4

Recently, some of my accounts cannot read any email in the INBOX within Squirrelmail. The error.... The server couldn't find the message you requested. Most probably your message list was out of date and the message has been moved away or deleted (perhaps by another program accessing the same mailbox). The messages are not being moved out. In fact, I can delete one of those messages just fine. I can also move messages to another folder. Oddly, once I move a message I can open and read it.. and I can open and read any message in the Trash folder. So, it seems that something has changed during an update to who knows what, which has borked up reading mail in Squirrelmail. It does seem that this is occurring so far on what would amount to root users of an account. In other words, the user created during a hosting installation. So, files are stored in /var/www/rootusername. When I add additional email users to an account, I put their user files in /var/www/homes/rootuser/additionalusername. Has anybody else experienced this? I'm a bit lost as to where to look. I am using Sendmail/Dovecot and have been on this server since CentOS 4 came out. This could be any of so many things from PHP to IMAP, but mostly it seems to be some pathing problem.. just not sure where to begin. The only thing I am finding in apache error logs is this: PHP Notice: Undefined variable: charset_converted in /usr/share/squirrelmail/functions/mime.php on line 316, referer: http://domain_name_replaced_here_by_john.com/webmail/src/right_main.php?PG_… Which doesn't seem to have any affect on other users and looks like it refers to the folder list and not the email reader. The default files read on boot up of an RH install CDRom are located in /isolinux/ To run custom kickstart scripts we need to modify the /isolinux/isolinux.cfg and add the kickstart file to the boot process. See here for kickstart script generation. For each kickstart install we need to add 3 lines to the isolinux.cfg file. A label line - This is the identifier you type at the linux boot prompt A kernel line - This does not change A append line - This is where we tell the boot process to use a kickstart file. Firstly backup the original file. # cp /DVD/isolinux/isolinux.cfg /DVD/isolinux/isolinux.cfg.orig Now edit and add our custom kickstart file. # vi /DVD/isolinux/isolinux.cfg Add label myboot1 kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img ramdisk_size=8192 ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg This will enable you to type myboot1 at the boot prompt which will call the ks.cfg located in the / of the DVD disk. Multiple kickstart files can be added by using different label and append lines. For Example: label myboot1 kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img ramdisk_size=8192 ks=cdrom:/ks1.cfg label myboot2 kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img ramdisk_size=8192 ks=cdrom:/ks2.cfg -------------------------------------------------- Have fun. After you let the rescue software mount the partition, *don't* chroot. It's been a long time since I had to mess with booting in rescue mode but lets assume your old root partition gets mounted under /mnt/sysimage and you told the rescue software to go ahead and mount it. If your /boot is a separate partition, you'll need to mount it manually. Assuming you keep everything where it belongs, mount it under /mnt/sysimage/boot. Then run grub by doing: /mnt/sysimage/sbin/grub --config-file=/mnt/sysimage/boot/grub/grub.conf This way grub "sees" /dev for the running system but uses your real grub config file. I would like to how how I can take the CentOS 4.4 Server Cd for example and modify the ISO to put on my anaconda-ks.cfg file and then modify the kernel parameters to automatically load the anaconda-ks.cfg file so that I can create a CD that I just stick into my machine it will format the drive, install the basic configuration I like without asking any questions. I need to install like 20 machines and I wanted to basically just stick a CD in the drive and let it do it's thing. Any help on how to accomplish this would be appreciated. Devin Atencio

Hello all, It seems, tzdata-2007d-1.el5.noarch.rpm contains information about Cuba/Havana time zone that activates DST at a time other than the one that is going on in the country... Is there an updated tzdata somewhere correcting this info? or how can I correct this on my own? Thanks, J.

centos rsync paths: cobbler

am using cobbler to import via rsync -and having trouble munging paths properly to download the 64-bit dvd or others, -what's a known good rsync path to use, or a command line that would allow me to determine this myself? When I use the web browsers of course and go to centos.org, you'll get the usual "not a suppoorted protocol" when clicking around trying to isolate a good path/server. i'm doing: cobbler import --mirror=rsync://need.servername.domain/path/to/centos86_64 --name=centos64 -any suggestions? (sorry, new to this, but definitely interested in rolling out cobbler). -krb
