Hi List I'm trying to update to the lastest kernel but I have a dirver that is not inculded in the distrubution, and I had to use the driver disk when installing centos 4.4 in the first place, The driver megasr .ko works fine with the installed kernel but I cannot find on for the updated kernel, any adive would be appreciated. without the updated driver there is a kernel panic on boot due to not finding the correct hard drive controller driver Thanks in advance for your help Robb

I'm in an all-Dell shop and am contemplating buying one of these to use as an "emergency gateway server" in case my primary fails. It'll let me take the primary out of service to upgrade its OS. Has anyone installed CentOS on one of these? Any gotchas? Centos 5 killing applications

I recently upgraded to CentOS5, and now I have application that suddenly close. Did not have any problem under 4.x Applications that crash regularly. Claws mail [compiled under CentOS5] VMware 5.5.3 workstation I see nothing in /var/log/messages. STRANGE MOUSE POINTER BEHAVIOUR - CENTOS-5

Hi All, I have done a fresh install of CentOS-5 (64bit) from CD's downloaded and sha1sum checked. The install is a minimal version with KDE and XEN - to use as DOM0. However when booting up and logging in the mouse pointer appears as normal. Once in the Graphical screen the pointer disappears. The mouse does work as you can see changes in the icons on the screen when moving in around and if you click on an icon it opens. I have tried various setting for the mouse pointer but nothing makes it visible. Any pointers ? TIA ChrisG

The kickstart in this instance is passing through a firewall appliance, which I think is Open/FreeBSD based and we now believe is breaking tcp window scaling. It seems that CentOS3&4 was unaffected by this but with v5 network connections hang after transferring about 500k. On a network that does not pass through this firewall v5 works as expected. Dean

centos5 cifs/autofs

Hi all I am trying to use the cifs module to mount a share from a win2k3 server but I am getting the following error in /var/log/messages - the filesystem does mount but i'm having other issues accessing the data from our web based app. Can anyone explain why I get this error please? Do not forget to double check the /etc/nsswitch.conf file too. The line that starts with `hosts:' should have `files' listed first and `dns' last. New Centos User - Yum Repositories Question

I've been using Red Hat and its derivatives since RH4.2. I use Fedora Core 6 for all of my desktop machines, but I decided to go for Centos 5 for my new colo web server. So I've just taken delivery of a new Centos 5 virtual server from Bytemark (http://bytemark.co.uk/) and I'm trying to get it set up with all the RPMs that I'm used to from FC6. As I understand it, the Centos Extras repository at http://centos.karan.org/ is the equivalent of Fedora Extras, so I've downloaded and installed the *.repo file from that site. But I still don't seem to have access to all of the RPMs that I was hoping for. I was particularly looking for the Perl CPAN modules that are part of Fedora Extras. Very few of those seem to be available. Am I just too early? Is the Centos Extras repository not quite ready for Centos 5 yet? Or is there a technical reason why the Fedora Extras RPMs can't be rebuilt for Centos? Or do I need to configure yum for a different repository? if I have to rebuild the RPMs myself, then I'm quite happy to do that. I just wondered if they would become available automatically if I waited a while. There's no real hurry to get this server up. Cheers, Dave...

adsl-set up (solved)

A few days ago I wrote complaining that my new, cheap Compaq Presario (sr5010nx) could not create and maintain a dsl connection using Centos5. I was puzzled that that Ubuntu - with pppoeconf - would work just fine but Centos5 could not be configured. (cento4 -also) Eventually I googled and found a bug report for the r8169 Gigabit ethernet driver. Conclusion - there is a patch in new kernels - I tried the Centos 2.6.18 kernel - again no results - and finally I installed a fc6-2.6.20 kernel - problem solved. -----------------gary

Greetings One production box we have deployed is a yum current centos 4.4 Im thinking we should move to perl 5.8.8 in regards to Spamassassin among some other items... Would someone please tell me from experience if do the command below of yum --enablerepo=centosplus update perl* Q: will I get everything I need for this exercise or should I be looking to get some other supporting packages from the centosplus repo as well? Oracle instantclient on CentOS 4.4 with DBD::Oracle

Does anyone have experience on installing the Oracle instantclient and DBD::Oracle on CentOS 4.4. I have been having several issues with getting the RPMs from Oracle's site working with DBD::Oracle. I can get the oracle instant client to install without issue. But I cannot compile/install DBD::Oracle using cpan or cpan2rpm. I found http://freshrpms.net/docs/oracle/ which has a nosrc rpm for the oracle instant client but I cannot find the ZIP files that are referenced in the SPEC file as Oracle has released a new version. When I try to build perl-DBD-Oracle-1.16-4.el4.src.rpm from that page it errors out...When I try to install perl-DBD-Oracle-1.16-4.el4.i386.rpm it says it cannot locate the .so files that the instantclient installed although I know they are there. Lost file associations, only application/octet-stream

Hi, After updating from CentOS 4.92 to 5 through manual hacks and 'yum update' (see http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2007-April/079023.html) I've lost all gnome file associations. Now every file is identified as application/octet-stream or text/plain or x-directory/normal (for directories). I've checked everything with 'rpm -Va' but couldn't find problem related to mime types. CentOS Install From Scratch on XFS File System

I'm thinking about switching to CentOS 4.4 x86_64 from another RH based version. However, I need to install it from scratch and I need EVERYTHING (including /boot & /) on XFS file systems. Does the default installer allow this? If not, how difficult would it be to make the necessary changes. Problems running programs compiled unter Centos 5 on Centos 4 machines

I know this is quite a handwaving, stupid question, but I don't know where else to ask it and maybe somebody here can at least point me into the right direction, because I'm stuck. I have a program package that were using here (OpenFOAM for those who know it). My problem is that when I compile and link this package on CentOS 5, it won't run on CentOS 4.x-machines but stops with a floating-point-exception. The funny thing is that my experiments with strace and gdb indicate that the problems occur during the loading of an .so (that does not belong to the package). I was able to remove that so from the build, the program then failed with similar symptoms at another library. Has anyone here seen similar behaviour and what would be a possible solution? (to compile under 5 in such a way that it runs on 4) My problem is, that moving all machines to CentOS 5 is not possible, because our cluster-solution (Rocks) is based on 4. Any hints (how trivial they may appear to you) are most welcome.

Hello List, Due to a problem with CentOS 5 and one of our firewalls I am having to disable tcp window scaling to stop network connections grinding to a halt. I am also trying to Kickstart CentOS 5 machines through the firewall so need to disable window scaling at install time. I have added to the kickstart file %pre echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling But the install still hangs while transferring the stage2.img Should the above %pre work or do I need to do something else to disable window scaling during the install. In case anyone's interested CentOS 5 is the first time we have suffered this problem both CentOS 3&4 worked without issue. Thanks Dean

There is (was?) a bugzilla for bcm43xx problems. I was able to get it to work only as long as I turned off authentication at my WAP. I recently tried bcm43xx with CentOS5 and the system froze during boot. This was with an x86_64 kernel. I went back to ndiswrapper which seems to work. LVM Resizing Problem

I'm new to lvm. I decided to decrease the space of a logical volume. This probably means that the 2 "systems" aren't talking to each other (or my lvm command failed). When I rebooted, things failed, going into "repair filesystem" mode. I tried fsck /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol05 but after awhile, it started giving block errors, specifically "Error reading block <block-number> (Invalid argument) while doing inode scan. Ignore error<y>? I held down the <Enter> key for awhile in hopes that I'd be able to get through the errors, but no joy. I finally cancelled the thing. I can rebuild the server, it's no big deal. In fact the logical volume that went bad isn't a big deal data wise, and I shouldn't need that data to bring up the server itself. I shouldn't need to mount it. So can I still save this? === Al

CentOS 5.0: Xen vs OpenVZ

Hi all, I've just installed CentOS 5.0 on two brand new server, and it's time for me to migrate a few virtual machines from the old servers. The old servers are running CentOS 4.4 + OpenVZ; I'm quite happy with this setup: fast safe and simple (for my experience as of now :) ) Also is very easy to migrate one virtual machine to a server to another for maintenance/reboots. I've also managed to setup a nightly rsync for backups and it's very fast (two pass: first rsync with virtual machine up; shutdown virtual machine; second rsync; restart virtual machine... all in a matter of minutes for a complete backup even on the biggest virtual machine with 12G of used disk space) Now the dilemma: should I stay with OpenVZ or should I jump to Xen? What I don't like of OpenVZ is the non-stock kernel; instead I like the easiness of management. What I don't like of Xen is the slow restart and the disk management (either dedicated partition or image file) which can lead to slower backup and harder migration; instead I'm attracted by the standard and fully supported kernel. Does anyone have experience on Xen and have advice on which could be the best compromise between the two solutions? Of course with Xen I have to start all over on learning but... hey I'm a Linux fan, I like to learn! Many thanks and have a good day Lorenzo Quatrini

Suggestions for partition

The recent thread on Anaconda and RAID10 made me start to think about how to partition a server I'm about to set up. I have two 146GB SCSI drives on an IBM x3550. It will be used as a build system. As such, there is no critical data on these systems, as the source code will be checked out of our source control system, and the build results are copied to another system. I usually build my systems with Kickstart, so if a disk dies, I can rebuild it quickly. Given all that, how would you partition these disks? I keep going back and forth between various options (HW RAID, SW RAID, LVM, etc.). I guess speed is more important to me than redundancy. I'm tempted to install the OS on one drive and use the entire second drive for data. This way I can rebuild or upgrade the OS without touching the data. But that will waste a lot of disk space, as the OS does not need 146GB. The only thing I'm pretty sure of is to put 2GB of swap on each drive, but after that everything is still in the air. I am looking for any and all suggestions from the collective wisdom and experience of this list. Thanks, Alfred

yum upgrading

I have boxes on CentOS 4.2 that I want to move to CentOS5. Are there any problems envisaged in trying to move 4.2->4.3, 4.3->4.4 and 4.4->5.0, using yum upgrade and changing the repositories at each stage? I guess it is not too good an idea to try it in one step. Or do I need the CDs? Can anyone advise? Problems with Server and Mail server

Hi... I've have problem with my file and mail server. I have a Centos 4 with file and mail server for my office network, which is compose with Linux (xandros 4) and windows (2k) work stations. The problem is that suddenly some linux machines can't access the the remote files on the server, but they can see the server in the file manager, but there is no files. When I enter as root, there is no problem... I can access remote files and devices in the server or in other machines (shared folder, files or devices). Windows machines can access anywhere (server and others work stations, linux and windwos); some linux machine can access anywhere too, but other can't access the server but can access shared resources. I think it may be a access permition issue, but this happens from one day to another, and in at least 3 linux machines... so, where can i look for solution in my server? Other thing is the mail server (outgoing) doesn't work, when i try to send a mail through the mail server (the same file server machine), it search for the outgoing server (192.168.0.10) and can't establish connection. A linux user friend told me to shutdown the machine and disconect the power cord for a minute and then restart the system. It worked for a time, but then it start the same problem and can only be solved by shooting down the system, and that is a bad solution. The mail server use to work fine, 24/7. These 2 problems start when a electric crash burned out the router, and then when i replaced it the start to happen, but router configuration is fine and doesn't seem to have a problem. I added all the aticonfig[1] entries where they are now, but the desktop horizontal option was not there. 6) Rebooted. 7) X came up with mirrored desktops again. I logged in as root and ran system-config-display (from the gnome menu). it said "Individual desktops" so I changed that to "Spanning desktops"). Saved that (no monitor or video card changes). Then I vi'ed into the xorg.conf file and noticed the first device had the desktop horizontal option turned on. Just in case, I added it to the first aticonfig[0] device, too. Saved a copy of that, just for good measure. Then I logged out. 8) New screen: left screen had the login box, all stretched out. Right screen - the blue background. I logged in as me and now I have spanning desktops (finally) again. Thanks to all, but mostly Jeff Stacey, who hung in there and kept sending me occasional hints. This time, it all fell into place. CentOS 4.4 Installation on Dell poweredge 2900 raid 1 + raid 5 fail

Hi All, I install CentOS 4.4 without additional driver disk. When I partition the disk, I create nothing on the raid 5, and I just create " / " " /boot " and "swap" on the raid 1. And it works. When I create a mount point /storage on the raid 5 and create " / " " /boot " and "swap" on the raid 1. The error comes again, saying that there are inconsistency on the raid /dev/sdb1 What should I do? Regards, Fung

CentOS 5 Xen Files Left in /var/lib/xen ..

I have a machine with four guests on it, and it seems to create and leave lots of files with names like vmlinuz.LqKA3h and initrd.kolvQu in directory /var/lib/xen. The remain there even when all guests are gracefully shut down .. and additional ones get created when they are next started. The end result, of course, is that the root file system fills up. So .. how can I prevent this from happening? I've got SELinux disabled and I have Guest files in /XenGuests. Firefox 2 on CentOS

Hi, has anybody succesfully compiled & installed firefox2 from source on CentOS 4 ? We need it for a ltsp project with some changes on the source code from firefox. On RHEL3 its working, but on CentOS 4 as well as RHEL4 Firefox2 is not starting after successfull compiling. Just 2 know whether its a problem of FF oder CentOS/RHEL ... thx Harald

CentOS 5 and fail2ban

I had fail2ban working against ssh and vsftpd in CentOS 4.4 but in 5 it only works against ssh and not vsftp. This is with the same conf files for fail2ban and vsftp which I used in 4.4. I suspect that the higher version of vsftp may be the cause. Has anyone managed to get it work? Failing that, any pointers on how to downgrade to the vsftpd-2.0.1-5.EL4.5.i386.rpm used in 4.4? __ Iain Lee

rpmforge repo for centos5

Hi, I just downloaded and installed the rpmforge-release rpm file for centos5. Ftp isn't working here, so it went http, but the http mirrors are giving me error 11, connections refused. Is this a problem with the particular mirror? Also, how do i query a specific repo to find out what packages it contains? Thanks. Dave.

SATA on Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 MB

Hi Gang! I've got this (now old) Gigabyte motherboard (GA-7N400 Pro2), I've had it for just over 3 years. I use it, so far, with only PATA devices. I'm toying with the idea of buying a matched pair of SATA drives and when I install Centos 5 (hopefully soon), building it with software raid (using the two drives as mirrors of each other). Now, I wouldn't have ever even thought of this question, except I've been reading recently that most/many/some new motherboards, those few that still offer PATA, often cannot boot from PATA any more because the manufacturer has saved a couple of bucks by not putting a suitable PATA chip on the board. Now, given that this board is 3 years old (designed even longer ago than that), I'm wondering if the SATA support is complete? That is, can Centos 5 boot from SATA on such a board? or am I merely an old man who worries needlessly? YUM grabbing two architectures

Afternoon all, Is there any particular reason why yum fetches rpms for two architectures on almost any update/install I'd like to perform? This includes both i386 and x86_64. Here's a small excerpt after performing a 'yum update' cups-libs i386 1:1.1.22-0.rc1.9.18 update 107 k cups-libs x86_64 1:1.1.22-0.rc1.9.18 update 112 k I'm assuming I'll have to put in an explicit arch into /etc/yum.conf? - sf

CentOS cutom kernel compilation

Could any one let me know how can I compile & build CentOS kernel. In redhat Linux the kernel source ia available under /usr/src/linux But in CentOS i am getting two directories named as Kernels and redhat under /usr/src the directory /usr/src/redhat is having again four subdirectory without any contents name as BUILD, RPMS, SPECS, SRPM And /usr/src/kenrnels is having the the directory 2.6.9-42.EL-hugemem-i686, 2.6.9-42.EL-i686, 2.6.9-42.EL-smp-i686 I dig the directory source 2.6.9-42.EL-i686, when I am executing make command after make menuconfig, I am getting error as "include/asm-i386/asm_offsets.h -- no such file or directory.. I am not sure wheather i am doing the right operation? Could any body suggest me any How to or step by step guide for CentOS kernel compilation Thanks in advance Brijesh Shukla

Moving a Centos 5 install to another disk

I want to get Centos 5 on my notebook, at minimal risk. I want to install it on a clean drive, make sure it 'works', the delete everything but /home (which is on a separate partition) from the Centos 4 drive and copy the Centos 5 over. Any 'caviats'? I would first tar up the Centos 4 stuff before putting my foot into it. To what extent do I need to have the same drive layouts? Is it enough that /boot and / are consistant (ie each is in its own partition). I am working with /home in a separate partition. Thanks for the help!

yum can't connect to mirrors

Hello, I added rpmforge yum repo to my yum config and then the box couldn't connect to fetch updates. I added enabled=0 to rpmforge.repo as well as add-ons, contrib, and centosplus, but i'm still getting mirror errors. I believe i've got some file corruption somewhere, but i don't see where. I can't even fetch packages in updates now, keep getting connection refused msgs. Thanks.
