Centos 5 and blutooth mouse

I have an hp dv9000 laptop with centos 5. everything is working except my bluetooth mouse... I go up to the icon (upper right) for bluetooth, right click on it, click the discoverable icon, then click the discoverable button on my mouse - ----- and nothing. Nothing pops up with a pin number for the mouse, nothing happens at all... Does this not work? What might I be missing. Jerry

Raid5 issues

So when I couldn't get the raid10 to work, I decided to do raid5. Everything installed and looked good. I left it overnight to rebuild the array, and when I came in this morning, everything was frozen. Upon reboot, it said that 2 of the 4 devices for the raid5 array failed. Luckily, I didn't have any data on it, but how do I know that the same thing won't happen when I have real data on it? I kind of feel that the problem might be that I'm using SATA drives, and they probably tried to self-correct and error and took too long, and the raid controller assumed that it was a bad drive, and took it out of the array. The question is, is there anything I can do about it? Russ

Installing from a custom kernel

Since the built in kernel doesn't have the raid10 module for some reason, I would like to custom compile a kernel that does, and install with it. How would I go about doing this? Russ

wget not in minimal install

Hi All, I used to always do a minimal install with v4.4, and wget (and other tools) was included. With v5 if i untick *everything* in the installation (incl "base") so that i can install from 1 cd, wget is not included. I couldn't make sense of any of the xml or xml.gz files on the installation cd. (/dev/cdrom/repodata/*), although they do mention wget as 'default' rather than 'mandatory' in one of the files. Which option should i tick to get wget? or should i just use a kickstart install and throw yum -y install wget dos2unix in the postinstall section? MrKiwi,

CentOS 5: GDM starts, but console doesn't switch VTs

(2nd attempt, the mailing list is still bouncing some gmail SMTP servers because of the multihop DSBL.) Over the weekend I installed CentOS 5 on my hp pavilion ze5300. The graphical install went just fine, and everything (except wireless, haven't worked on that yet) seems to be working. However, on boot, the text console comes up. If I hit Alt-F7 manually, I'm switched to the graphical GDM login, and that logs me in to a Gnome session as usual -- but the console never automatically switches over to the GDM virtual terminal, as far as I can tell. Is anyone else experiencing this? It may be that this happens only with the Xen kernel and has something to do with rhgb itself switching into text mode because of the microcode module installation failure that has been discussed elsewhere.

Zimbra MTA and Contact package?

Does anyone have any feedback on the Zimbra MTA and Contact software? I just saw that Comcast is going to start using the software, I played with it over a year ago and dumped it. It seems to have been developed much further and works, open source and compiled for RedHat 4 Enterprise. Any feedback would be helpful... Thanks, john

runuser: /dev/null permission denied when init script is run via service

Hi, I have problem with runuser utility and permission to /dev/null. runuser is called from init script. When init script is run /etc/init.d/callrec start, then there are no problems with permissions, but when init script is called via service callrec start. Then runuser starts complaining about permissions. runuser: /dev/null: Permission denied What is strange is that I do not redirect to /dev/null anywhere. Permissions to /dev/null are: crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 1, 3 Apr 16 16:39 /dev/null The difference between calling init script from command line and from service tool is that service calls script as parameter of env env -i LANG=en_US.UTF-8 PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin TERM=xterm /etc/init.d/callrec start CentOS is 4.3. OT: Quick ext3 command

Hello, Sorry for the off-topic, but I've just installed CentOS 5 on my home box and I want to put the journal on another drive. I created a software RAID-1 device, /dev/md1, and formatted an ext3 file system on it. Now I want to move the journal to /dev/hda5. I've googled for this and the process appears to be: mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 -O journal_dev /dev/hda5 mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 -J device=/dev/hda5 /dev/md1 Now, here's the fun part. I've already put data on /dev/md1. Will the above commands reformat /dev/md1? If so, is there an easy way to move the journal for /dev/md1 to a new partition? TIA! Jeff

Trying to build custom Python 2.4.4 RPM

I'm trying to build a custom RPM with a standalone Python 2.4.4 in the /opt directory to keep it isolated from the stock version of Python in CentOS 4.4. The end goal is to use it in conjunction with yet-to-be-built RPMS of the current versions of Zope and Plone. The spec file I've constructed allows me to build a RPM successfully, but when I try to install the RPM, it complains: error: Failed dependencies: /usr/local/bin/python is needed by python24-2.4.4-0.i386 I'm not sure if this is more of a Python or RPM issue. So, I'm hoping someone on the list knows enough about both to help me out. Laptop non-graphic install init 5 to X not Gnome

Well I got my 1st notebook install done. Since the video card takes 24Mb memory, installer would not go graphical (256-24=232). But I can now boot into character mode. an init 5 brings up X, but I am in the X environment, and I want to be in Gnome. What file am I to edit and what changes do I make? thanks.

kernel update and RAID controller

Hello, I have a problem with drivers. I believe it is a general topic for Linux administrator. I managed it to install Centos4 with driver disk for my RAID controller. Unfortunately after "yum update" my kernel is updated and I see some warnings about missing driver. After restart kernel is stopping with message "kernel panic". The server I am installing on is Intel S5000PAL http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s5000pal/ and the drivers are version 07.15.0209.2007 on http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scripts-df-external/filter_results.aspx?strT ypes=all&ProductID=2451&OSFullName=Red+Hat*+Enterprise+Linux+4.0&lang=eng&st rOSs=129&submit=Go%21 Could somebody give me some advices how to fix this ? ssh to failover target?

I have some machines that send ssh commands to a load balancer appliance that is really a pair of machines that can fail over to each other. The ssh keys are set up on both targets, but whenever the active target is changed, ssh issues a warning about a "man-in-the-middle" attack also goes to the log and the console which tends to alarm the operators. Setting the strict host check to no lets the command complete anyway, but is there a way to get rid of the warning completely? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Email client shortcut

Under SL 4.x GNOME, when I assigned a button shortcut for Email (the "Mail" button of my Microsoft Internet Keyboard), the default email client (thunderbird) was launched. Under CentOS 5.0, Thunderbird is launched as "thunderbird -compose %s" (defined in GNOME "Preferred applications"). This has as an effect when I press the email shortcut a compose new message window opens, and not the thunderbird main client. If I erase the "-compose %s" part, it has as a side effect that when I click on an email web link under firefox, it doesn't open the compose window but the thunderbird client. Any nice fix on this, other than choosing between the two? Thanks.

NFS issue

Hi List, I must be going mad or something, but got a really odd problem with NFS mount and a DVD rom. Here is the situation, /dev/md7 58G 18G 37G 33% /data which is shared out by NFS, (/etc/exportfs) This has been working since I installed the OS, Centos 4.4 I have a DVD on that is device /dev/scd0, which I can mount anywhere I like, no problem. However, the problem comes when I try to mount it under /data/shared/Photos/Archive1. It mounts ok, and I can see the data on it form the server, but I cannot see this data over the network on any NFS client when mounting /data/shared. If I mount /devscd0 as /mnt and export that, I can mount the over the network fine. If I take another device, /dev/md4 and mount in same place, (/data/shared/Photos/Archive1) i cannot see those files over the network either. I do this kind of thing not quite everyday on Solaris and it just works.. I know I must be missing something, but i'll be b*gger** if I know what. No messages in any /var/log/* file. Any ideas would be most appreciated? Cheers AM

MPlayer doesn't seem to work right in CentOS 5

I could be mixed up here, but I have mplayer working perfectly at home in CentOS 4.4, but I just built it here at work for CentOS 5.0 and it doesn't produce any sound. My h/w: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) Dell Precision 390 Intel Pentium 4 3.00GHz 2Gb RAM The sound from Adobe/Macromedia flash player works fine (in seamonkey) - should I be telling mplayer to build for i386 instead of x86_64? Debugging sendmail

I have Centos 4 running on my server. During bootup, it hangs on the starting of sendmail. When I use the GUI interface to check what services are running, sendmail is shown to be running. However, if I try a restart, it just hangs. If I try to send mail with the php sendmail, it times out. My Linux skills are limited, so I am not sure what steps I should follow to debug the problem. Stumped: kernel 2.6.18-8 source doesn't build???

I installed the kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.src.rpm today and went to build it, but it fails with this error: $ rpmbuild -bp --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec Building target platforms: x86_64 Building for target x86_64 error: Failed build dependencies: unifdef is needed by kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.x86_64 I double checked and this appears to be the latest kernel source rpm on centos/5.0/os/SRPMS. CentOS 5 + Nforce 4 SLI Intel SATA problems

I've been having an extremely hard time using the on board SATA controller on my nvidia based board. I have two 160gig Maxtor SATA drives attached to the on board controller, setup as software raid0. The problem is the array is extremely unreliable, where I'm getting constant I/O errors like: sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x00040000 end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 20010007 sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x00040000 end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 20010000 I've wiped and scanned the drives with the Maxtor diagnostic utilities which passes both drives with flying colors. I've had no issues when i was doing the same thing with Suse 10.1, the same setup was 100% reliable. I also have two 160gig Maxtor ATA133 drive in the machine on the on board PATA controller and they work totally reliable. I'm wondering if anyone else is having a problem with on board nvidia sata controller thats part of the nforce4 chipset? btw its using the sata_nv driver. Also when I reboot it works fine for a few hours and then begins to act up again. Blocking radio streaming

Hi, I'm the system's administrator at my company. All servers are CentOS :) I've been noticing that many people spend the whole day hearing to online radios. How can i block the streaming ? Hi All, I have some old HP Netserver LPr¹s that have old HP RAID controllers (NetRAID 3si¹s). The RAID controllers don¹t work too well with CentOS. I¹ve not been able to get the installer to see the controllers. I¹ve read a lot of notes that don¹t seem to point to me having any success. So 2 questions. Has anyone successfully used NetRAID 3si controllers with CentOS? Can anyone recommend an alternative controller that would play nicer with the OS? I¹m shooting for RAID1 only. Thanks Brian

5.0: installing everything

I realize that the @everything packages option is now gone in CentOS 5.0 (ix86 and x86_64), but my experiments to date don't show how to practically simulate the same effect (and I have a good reason for doing so). I want all packages, all languages. If one installs from CD, and selects all packages and options, the resulting anaconda-ks.cfg file does not have a complete package list. For example: - performing a kickstart install using the package list from the full-install-from-CD anaconda-ks.cfg results in a system with only about a third of the available packages, missing some notables such as openssl. - A kickstart install with a wild-card glob in the packages list does not work either; one gets a minimal install. Wild cards evidently not supported. - A kickstart install with a full listing of every rpm (not packages) in the %packages section does work, but it takes _two days_ of 100% CPU to resolve dependencies. So, how do I determine the proper full package list to use in the %packages section for a kickstart install? Do I have to go grubbing around in comps.xml to find the proper package list? TIA, Steve

Hi, following system: Dell PE2650, 2 2.4ghz Xeon, 1gb ram, Dell Perc4DC Controller It has EL5 installed, but I wanted to change to Centos because of the missing workstation packages in the entry server repository. The system was redhat up2date until yesterday, so the latest kernel was missing. I changed redhat-release to centos-release packages and the new centos kernel was installed the via yum. This kernel does not boot. Error messages: i20:iop0: Get status timeout i20:iop0: Reset timeout i20:iop0: could not reset controller i20:iop0: Reset timeout kernel panic Here are my findings when setting emulation in scsi adapter bios to i2o: - initial redhat el5 install fails, no adapter found (mayby centos install is affected, too, have to set to 'mass storage' to install) - redhat's kernel-2.6.18-8.1.1.el5 and kernel-2.6.18-8.1.3.el5 boot with i20 enabled - centos latest 2.6.18-8.1.3.el5 does not! error messages above - setting to 'mass storage' all is fine Is this really a centos kernel problem (I read in centos kernel changelog about special centos changes), or is this for any reason because this is actually a redhat system? Centos 5 text install doesnt install all of GNOME

I did find this out in another message here and they are right. This is a missing piece (one of many!) in the text install. Even if you select Gnome as your workstation WIndows environment, not all of Gnome gets in. You still have to do: yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" Then edit /etc/inittab file to reflect as shown below id:5:initdefault: ^ This number should be 5.

The RHEL 5 documentation talks about a utility called genkey, apparently part of a package called crypto-utils: https://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-5-manual/Deployment_Gui… However, I can't find that package or that utility on CentOS 5 - did a few digging with yum but nothing showed up. Anybody knows: 1. What happened to those things on CentOS 5? 2. Apache User Isolation/Perchild, or PHP "chroot"?

Has anyone set up any form of apache user isolation on CentOS? I have multiple virtual hosts on my machine, run by users who do not trust eachother. The problem is that any php script run by apache is able to do things like raw file io on other users' .htpasswds, php scripts, hidden directory listings, and so on. Database passwords can even be divulged in this way, since they are often stored in .php scripts, which can be read "in the raw" as files by other php scripts. What is the easiest method for dealing with this? I found http://webauth.stanford.edu/manual/mod/perchild.html but it does not seem to be compiled with the CentOS 5 apache, and I've read elsewhere that php has issues with mutlithreaded apache. Is there any easy way to isolate individual users, by either having apache setuid, or chrooting php scripts, or (ugh) a clean way to run a new apache copy for each vhost? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? On a Compaq DL360 G1 w/ dual PIII 1.27's I installed Centos 5 minimal and then a yum update When I do a "uname -a" I get this Linux tstsrvr.abbacomm.net 2.6.18-8.1.3.el5 #1 SMP Mon Apr 30 19:55:44 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux When I do a rpm -qa | grep kern* I get this kernel-devel-2.6.18-8.1.3.el5 kernel-2.6.18-8.1.3.el5 kernel-headers-2.6.18-8.1.3.el5 It is interesting that I did have this issue with my first Compaq DL380 load with slightly faster dual PIII's Centos 4 always found both processors automatically... hmmmmm, now... what part of my brains have done fell out my ears that I am not seeing the obvious solution on this one??? Hello, I've got the first disk of centos5. I plan to do a minimal install, correct me but that's where you uncheck everything, what about base do you uncheck that as well? I am curious as to the 5.0 server CD? Anyway i want to implement software raid during the install. I've got two identical drives hda and hdb when i get to the disk partition screen, this is in text mode, do i select raid, then what? I'd also like to give my volume groups more memorable names than volgroup00 and the like. Thanks. Dave.

Hi, 'exclude' option fails for yum on centos 5. I tried to yum install a group on a x86_64 machine, but it installs both ix86 version and x86_64 version. So I added the following line to /etc/yum.conf, clears /var/cache/yum/, then run 'yum groupinstall Ruby', but it reports that ix86 version packages will be installed still. Any one know what's the correct syntax to exclude one or more 'arch' from group installation on centos 5? Please help.
