None of these look to me like they are related to the problem - no dual head. What's worse is that s-c-d doesn't seem to understand this either. I'm trying to install CentOS 5 on an Intel DG965W MB, but I'm getting a kernel panic: VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block(253,0) Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(253,0) I suspect it is because the drive is not being recognized (at all), but I'm not sure. I've tried various combinations of flags, including: all-generic-ide, pci=nommconf, remapping [enabled], irqpoll, acpi=off ... ... but the result is always the same... Are there issues with this chipset and Centos 5? ( RHEL's HCL is unhelpful. It was empty, when I checked. )

For the interest of all concerned: The 32-bit version of Seamonkey works perfectly with the flash plugin. I haven't tested others yet, including the acrobat reader, but I have much more confidence that problems encountered there will be easily soluble. Can't get resolution higher than 1280x1024 - Centos 5

Hello all, I can't get higher than 1280x1024 resolution (60hz, 24 depth). I'm running Centos 5 x86 64bit on AMD Athlon64 x2 4600, Geforce 6200 PCI express. Even as root, that is the highest I can set the display. I am guessin the kernel does not support my combo? Everyone, Sorry for this second post but one of the members pointed out to me I had posted it in a thread belonging to a different subject. I am trying to use CentOS 5.0 in place of SCO OpenServer 5.0 as well as replacing terminal Word Perfect. I have looked at jed which is available via the Fedora extras and it appears to have what I will need. Do any of you have an CentOS 5.0 rpm for jed or know where I might find one. Thanks, Greg Ennis

rsync problems on windows

I'm trying to use the CentOS server for windows backups. I want to use rsync to get the data over there. I downloaded cwrsync, but I'm having issues getting it to work. I keep getting: "Disconnecting: Timeout, server not responding." Has anyone seen anything like this? Hi there, I am using tar to backup the whole system (specific directorues usr,lib,sbin,etc,var,home,root). On bare metal recovery I install the minimal portion of the syetm and then I throw the tarballs. Any opinions? D. Karapiperis

In the vein of the "Can't get resolution higher than 1280x1024" and "Another CentOS 5 oddity..." threads, I just installed CentOS5 w/Xen kernel on a Sony VAIO desktop with an nVidia NV5M64 (RIVA TNT2 64 Pro) card, using an old Samsung SyncMaster 700NF monitor. system-config-display chose the highest possible resolution for the monitor and Xorg did its best to drive it, but it just isn't quite right: rhgb merely made a mess, which only sort of clears up when gdm starts. After I log in, only bits and pieces of menus and windows are painted. Rebooting single user I re-ran system-config-display and it claimed to have written 1280x1024 into xorg.conf, but in fact it didn't: it omitted the "Screen" section entirely. Rhgb was still messed up, gdm still seemed to be at some very high resolution, and then after logging in I found myself at 800x600 with no option to set the resolution higher. Three passes of switch-to-text-console-and-run system-config-display (including manually selecting my monitor) later, I finally have everything working, but only at 1024x768. If I choose any higher resolution, the repainting issues return. I won't really need the GUI very often after I get other things set up, so I'm not particularly worried about this, but I thought I'd report it for benefit of anyone else who might encounter a problem with a similar video card. I'd be interested to hear further thoughts on whether this could be a kernel issue, as suggested by Preston Crawford. (I have installed all the updates, for what that's worth).

I'd like to point out that overall I am quite pleased with CentOS 5, although I am having more fun with it than I did with 4.4 and I knew less about CentOS then (duh). Most things seem to work fine, including a relatively smooth installation from the DVD image I downloaded, although the number of screensavers I can see (and this could be related to the ATI/dual head problem) is pathetically low - there are only 5 or six. Phleagh. I had no trouble reinstalling the border theme I had before, and although I don't particularly like the new main menu construction, it makes sense enough to be not too unworthwhile. I'm curious about how the suspend function works, how to reactivate (nothing seemed to work) and, most importantly, how to get it OFF the main menu. Anyway, I reinstalled Seamonkey 1.1.1, and it landed flawlessly, although I had to look to find the x86_64 version. It came without any plugins, as usual, but I have tried reinstalling the flash player plugin, and it just won't work, not even with nspluginwrapper installed. Is there some trick to this that I need to know (and what?)? Installing from working Linux partition

I've got some servers running other flavors of Linux (eg. FC2) and I'm wondering if I can install CentOS5 to a new empty partition (eg. on a new drive) while running under the old OS? It seems like the installer OS just needs some hardware sniffing ability and the ability to read the installation media and write to the target media, so in principle one should be able to install from a working system to the new partition and then update one's existing GRUB config. Is this doable or perhaps even commonly done?

Hi all, I'm trying to install CentOS 5 as a domU in a CentOS5 dom0 system and I use Virtual Machine Manager to do it. I've dumped all CentOS5 CDs contents in /var/www/CentOS to make a local http media source. It works fine in dom0 browser. When I arrive in "Locating installation media[*]" step I point out to http://localhost/CentOS (which is perfectly active and available) resource, but the application always responds the same: Error, HTTP resource not available. I've also tried with http://127.0.0.1/CentOS but I get the same error message. ¿?¿? Running SELinux necessary for the average user?

I'm wondering because it seems to be slowing my machine down considerably under CentOS 5. Especially the daemon they include to monitor SELinux and the program that attaches to it. I tried opening this earlier and it just sat there spinning. I want the knowledge that my machine is secure and safe. But I'm wondering if the price is worth it. Is it necessary for my machine to be fairly secure? Preston

Centos %.0 failed to recognize my video card

I tried to install Centos 5.0 yesterday and it was a complete failure. The installer could not detect my vidio card. The vidio card is a nvidia geforce fx GeForce FX (generic). This is the same vidio card that was perfectly recognized in Centos 4.3 The anaconda installer repartitioned my disk and installed a custom selection of software. This took about 1 hr. When I rebooted it would no start x windows. I even took a file copy of the Centos 4.3 xorg.conf and put it in /etc/X11 directory. I tried system-config-display reconfig and it failed to recognize the vidio. I reinstalled Centos 4.3. I have had the same problem when I was trying to install fedora core 5. I am convinced the redhat people removed the monitor selection for a viewsonic VP171b. This is why it must have happened. I had reported this problem when I was on the fedora core system. But Redhat did not do anything to correct the problem. I am stuck at Centos 4.3 forever. I am so frustrated I even tried Ubuntu but that would not recognize my usb 1.0 mouse. Mouting Xen DomU images in Dom0

Hi everyone, I have a CentOS 5 Domain0 with a CentOS 5 Domain U installed on my machine, it all works flawlessly. One of the problems I am faced with is transporting the Domain U image to another machine (not in real time). Since the Virtual Machine Manager allows installing the guest operating system using the CentOS 5 installer, it ends up treating the partition (in my case an LVM partition) as a physical disk. To backup my Xen image is xm save the best way of doing it? Or can I infact mount the partitions created by the Domain U in Domain 0 and tar.gz them. PearDB, PHP, CentOS 5

All, I'm trying to get a small app working but it requires DB.php provided by Pear. I've double checked and I have php-pear.noarch installed but there is no DB.php (just DependencyDB.php ). There seem to be no other packages that have pear or a DB.php file. Anyone have any ideas where I can get it? I've found just the files provided from the Pear site but I have no idea where to copy them to so everything is noticed properly. Suggestions/Solutions? Thanks!! Lonny

Rebuild all currently installed RPMs?

Hi there, Does anyone know a quick way in yum or rpm to reinstall all currently installed rpm's - ie: Some files have been deleted but you don't know which ones.. So you just want to force a reinstall of all currently installed. I have been using: Rpm -Va | grep missing >> missing.log And then more missing.log Rpm -q -whatprovides /path/to/file And then Rpm -Uvh --force ftp://mirror/path/file But it's a slow and painful process. It's on a CentOS 4.4 machine. JC

CentOS 5 dual head doesn't work

I just bit the bullet and installed CentOS 5 on my work desktop, and although I have two monitors and a card that supports them, I cannot get the display configuration to work with both as a continuous (spanning) desktop. I have tried using the correct (autodetected) monitor type (digital and analog), a generic LCD with 1280x1024, nothing works. Every time I set the configuration, the X server fails to restart and I wind up with single-head monitoring (duplicate displays on both screens). I am experiencing hangs on the Keyboard Lang selection screen in GUI Mode install on a M/B setup with Intel BIOS SATA RAID. Workaround is to use 'linux nodmraid' switch which disables visibility of RAID volumes during drive detection of Disk Druid. Has anyone else tried this config without workarounds and success?

Hello again. Working to put Centos 5 on my old Toshiba Portege 3490ct (256Mb memory). PCMCIA CDrom and Lan card. Using 'linux askmethod' to be able to install off of my FTP server (have done 4 PC installs so far off that server successfully) It's video card is: S3 86C270-294 Savage IX/MV After recognizing the video card I get the message about no graphical install available. Putting on and external monitor does not change this. Problem with the character mode install is no LVM partition management functions. I need to alter the default partitioning. This IS an older notebook. It does have Centos 4.4 on it right now. How would I use the ftp install and specify 'acpi=no' (perhaps the old bios???). Or I could build a partial kickstart file on a diskette (add the USB diskette drive) to do the partitioning and then switch to package selection (and maybe even in graphical mode)? Some guidance here would be great.

Configuring bind

I'm new to Centos and am in the process of building a new server. On my test box, I've installed CentOS v5 x86_64. When starting bind for the first time I found that named.conf and various zone files where missing. I installed named.conf along with localdomain.zone, localhost.zone, named.broadcast, named.ca, named.ip6.local, named.local, named.zero along with a couple test domains. The problem I'm having is when I use this box as a nameserver from another box or a workstation. If at the prompt of the test box I can ping say google.com, but not from my workstation or other local development boxes when using this testbox as a nameserver. The named.conf and zone files were copied from another local development box with RH 8 installed. I am of course pointing to the test box to use as DNS server in my workstation tcp/ip config. Think of this as a motion as one might move at a meeting. Discussion and refinement are in order. I don't understand the current rationale for a single CentOS users' list; probably in times past it was sensible, but I think the time has come for splitting the list by release. I'm speaking from my own perspective, but I'm sure others have similar stories. How many users use all CentOS releases? I am not on the Fedora users' list because of the volume of email, though I do use Fedora Core and might usefully contribute to FC in that way. Similarly, I'm no longer on the OpenSUSE list, same story. The time has come when I must, again, reduce the volume of email I see, because it's clogging my modem. I use CentOS4 and plan to use CentOS5. I am interested in email for those, but not for CentOS 3 (I have no systems) nor CentOS 2 (I have one RHL 7.3 system that thinks it's CentOS 2, but it's in maintenance mode, and anything I do I will do alone). I don't know how much email I would eliminate by dropping email for Centos < C4, but when I move to CentOS 5 I will lose interest in C4 and then there will be savings. If this list were split into one for each release, then subscribers could choose which email they see. At present, it's all or none, and neither suits me. If this list is split into four, then I expect the transition method would be to subscribe everyone on this list to the new four. At some point, this would become read-only (nobody posts), or maybe all mail for this goes (via a filter to fix the headers) to all the others. By "fix the headers" I mean "do whatever it takes to ensure replies go to the list the subscriber is replying to." I'm sure this transition arrangement is imperfect; my objectives are to encourage CentOS to have the separate lists, and to ensure that the transition is fairly easy for users so we don't lose lots of subscribers. The equivalent beasty doesn't exist in the x86_64 config file. Yum package/instlal/update problem

Hi gang! I'm trying to update my videolan client (0.8.4a-4.el4.rf) to the latest 0.8.6 version. I see that Dag has a 0.8.6 for EL4 (I'm running Centos 4.4) but when I do "yum update videolan-client" it says there's nothing to update. My apologies for this because it is, technically, OT, but it is a classic example of what rotten support Linux (and CentOS) get in the US from equipment manufacturers. The whole email is a lie because they DO have the drivers on their asia site, they just don't want us 'Murkins to get our hands on them. Or maybe it's part of some clever little nuance of their agreement with Micro$oft not to provide the Linux drivers so they can have the rights to distribute the Window$ drivers with the printers. Sound problems with CentOS

Has anyone experienced this before? This happened to me even under CentOS 4.x. But basically what happens is that when I play MP3s, whatever the right speaker crackles at higher volume. And it's always that speaker and only that speaker. If I turn the balance to the other speaker I have no problems. So it feels like it might be a mixer issue. I use Alsa, of course, as that's what the default is. Is this a known issue or does someone know how to fix it? Preston

Sftp slow on both our centos installs

The short version. Copying over SFTP to our centos boxes maxes out at 2MB a sec. The Question: Is there some sort of speed limitation somewhere in the ssh/sftp daemon? Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening? The long version We have centos 4.6 installed on 2 different machines, different hardware, different nics. Even on 2 different subnets. I've tried different switches, 1000 Full/Half 100 Full/Half and still get the same speed. It maxes out at 2MB a sec. Same switch, network, client using sftp to our xserves gets 10MB a sec. Basically filling the pipe of the network. The only thing that is the same on both the linux boxes is the distro. So i thought maybe someone may have come across this before. I haven't tried other protocols yet (FTP and HTTP) I'll check that tomorrow. Thanks, Jamie

CentOS 5 and ndiswrapper

This is an abbreviated version of an e-mail that I also posted to the ndiswrapper mailing list. Compressing the long story, I ran into the same problem using CentOS 5 as I had with Fedora Core 6 and ndiswrapper: my laptop (HP Pavilion zv6000 series with a Broadcom BCM43xx wireless NIC) would lock up or spontaneously reboot after a few hours if I brought up the wireless interface. I also tried using the native bcm43xx driver but the system wouldn't even boot. On a whim, I tried the current "plain vanilla" kernel (2.6.21) from kernel.org. My laptop has been up and stable running the 2.6.21 kernel with the wireless NIC up using ndiswrapper ever since. Does anyone have any idea why the un-patched kernel from kernel.org works fine with ndiswrapper but both the FC6 and CentOS (RHEL) kernels lock up or spontaneously reboot? I built the 2.6.21 kernel by copying the config file for 2.6.18-8.1.1 from /boot and doing a "make oldconfig". Everything is x86_64. Cheers, Dave P.S. Hi, I have CentOS 4.4 installed on a system at an ISP and I am trying to setup lm_sensors. It would be a lot easier to setup if I knew what motherboard I was using! :-) Is there any way of identifying the motherboard of a system remotely (via SSH)? Many thanks Regards, Dan

CentOS 5 - Issues with multimedia

Hi, I am having some issues with CentOS 5. -XMMS stops playing MP3s without apparent reason. I leave it playing some album and it will just stop whenever it feels like it. It will go into "pause" and just stay there. Pressing on the pause button to resume does nothing at all. I thought it could be some newly encoded songs, but it does the same for a song that I have played 100% times. -K3B takes 1:40 to create a DVD. Initially I thought it could be because I was writing a DVD with 2GB files on and UDF extensions, but creating the image first and then burning that takes exactly as long. I am running a clean install of CentOS 5 i386 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 (Core Due, 1GB RAM) with SELinux on "enforcing". None of these issues happen on the same machine running kubuntu 6.10. Strange behavior in X, esp. VMWare Windows

Last Thursday, for some reason (possibly a power failure), my work desktop had a different video configuration than when I left Wednesday evening. I have two 17" flat panels configured as a two-head wide (side-by-side) single display. When I arrived on Thu, I had two individual desktops instead, the resolution was down to 800x600, and so on. The monitor type had been reset to generic 800x600, and the vido card was unknown. (This was not true before.) After a lot of fooling around with the xorg.conf file, I finally got it back to where it should be, for the most part. My current xorg.conf is included below. The problem is that I typically run certain apps on the right screen, including seamonkey and Windows under VMWare workstation, and since the new configuration came in, the mouse cursor is not where it should be. Items light up when I run the mouse over them, but a little below and to the right of the tip of the pointer. It is only a slight dislocation, but significantly worse in the Windows on VMWare, and it is really annoying when I have to mis-aim the cursor to hit certain selections (check boxes, bullets, etc.). Can anyone explain this?
