Hello all. Does anyone know how to get bluetooth working on CentOS 5? I can't pair any device. Things work perfectly on CentOS 4. Hi I just joined I have a serer who's purpose life is to be a fileserver/print server right now it is running windows 98 because it is an older computer look at an alternate os such as this will this allow windows based machines to talk to it save files retrieve files and also how difficult is it to install.

The filesystem on /dev/sda1 does not at any time contain anything useful (it started out as just being an extended partition, and now is completely empty. At no time did it have any label set). I install centos 4.4 in a serveraltos9100, every thing was ok, but the watch´s time on the system is going very fast, the second goin very fast. The time in the bios setup is ok, the time go fine, but when I booting the centos 4.4 , the time is wrong, I repair with the command date, but minuts later all is crazy again Please I need help. Hello, I'd like to announce a release of a CentOS 5 DVD image, with i386 and x86_64 installations. This is an independent work, so please don't bother CentOS lists with bugs related to the installer only. Summary of changes: * i686 and x86_64 install from a single dvd (automatic detection on boot) * updates as of 2007-04-26 * no kdelibs-api-docs, openoffice.org, tetex-doc and most *-javadoc sha1sum: 63885249695c60a87443e304212d6cf9af678165 centos5_32and64.iso md5sum: 0db291c3e4f7dc4fb4e6ea052b77e95d centos5_32and64.iso torrent: ftp://ftp.gil.di.uminho.pt/pub/users/strange/centos/c5_32+64.torrent iso: ftp://ftp.gil.di.uminho.pt/pub/users/strange/centos/centos5_32and64.iso Detailed changes: * All rpms are the originals from CentOS 5. However, the *.i386.rpm and *.noarch.rpm for the x86_64 are the ones from the i386 DVD, not from the x86_64, as the contents are the same and the rpm headers differ only on the Build Date and/or Signature. * each install (x86_64 or i386) only has knowledge of rpms originally in their DVDs, so x86_64 installs won't be bloated with more i386 packages than the originals. * Some packages are missing. Installed CentOS 5 today, question about an error I'm getting

So I did a fresh install today. Decided to go ahead and upgrade. Everything seems okay save for three problems. #1 - I get a message during boot saying that an Intel microcode update didn't work. Something about not being able to find /proc/microcode. #2 - I can't use the Firefox extension HTML Parser. Anyone use this. #3 - Off and on GDM crashes and I get dropped into a prompt. Any ideas? FreeNX authenticates but no desktop on centos 5 ??

Hi all, I am new to CentOS and freeNX -- both look really awesome, a huge thanks to all the people making them happen. I am having a problem with freenx that appears to be specific to centos 5. my client authenticates but then no desktop comes up. however, when I connect to a similar machine running centos 4.4, I authenticate and the gnome desktop just pops up sweet as can be. I also have a vnc connection to my centos 5 workstation working, and can get a gnome desktop through vnc, and direct X11 connections are fine. the two nxserver machines have stable IP addresses, I have root access. the nxclient machine is a mac G4 PPC (which presumably makes no difference at all), with very recent download of the mac OS X client from nomachine. I followed the instructions for setting up freenx on centos 4.4 found here: http://linuxgazette.net/135/knaggs.html and it worked perfectly the first time I tried. the key steps were wget http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/extras/i386/RPMS/nx-1.5.0-1.centos4.i386.… wget http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/extras/i386/RPMS/freenx-0.5.0-10.c4.noarc… sudo rpm -Uvh nx-1.5.0-1.centos4.i386.rpm sudo rpm -Uvh freenx-0.5.0-10.c4.noarch.rpm plus a quick copy-paste of the client dsa key, and nxserver --adduser <me> For CentOS 5, I tried the yum-based instructions found at http://wiki.centos.org/FreeNX (which says that freenx only works with centos 4, and the bottom of page says "FreeNX (last edited 2007-02-08 23:38:36 by JohnnyHughes )" -- hopefully its just the wiki is out of date) I also tried adapting the above steps to use the centos 5 packages from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/extras/i386/RPMS/ freenx-0.5.0-13.el5.centos.i386.rpm 08-Apr-2007 11:00 66K nx-2.1.0-6.el5.centos.i386.rpm 08-Apr-2007 11:00 2.9M either way, I get authenticated but no desktop comes up in the X11 window on the client machine. (just to be explicit: using exactly the same client I do get a desktop on the centos 4.4 machine). I saw a post today saying that freenx is supposed to work exactly the same on CentOS 5 as per instructions for 4. hmmm. I basically followed the instructions posted in http://linux.web.psi.ch/livecd/usbdisk.html and use the CentOS Live CD iso. I used a 2G Lexar FireFly (1G partition formatted via FAT for the LiveCD and 1G /home via ext3). If I need to transfer files, I will copy them to the FAT partition. I hope this helps! Mark

Hi folks. I'm posting this to both the Fedora as well as the CentOS lists in hopes that somewhere, someone can help me figure out what's going on. I have a dual Xeon 3GHz server that's performing rather slow when it comes to disk activities. The machine is configured with a single 160 GiB OS drive (with CentOS 5.0) and 4x500 GiB drives setup in a RAID-5 configuration. All drives are setup for 3.0 GiB SATA link, and the motherboard also supports that. If I try to delete the folder afterwards (rm -rf FOLDER) it takes a few seconds to do so, however if I delete the CONTENTS of the folder, it does so within a fraction of a second (but then 'sync' takes a few seconds to catch up.) That same folder that I'm copying contains 452 jpeg files in it, ranging from 2.5 to 6.2 MiB. Doing some image processing on them is where it takes a long time. At the moment I'm doing a simple thumbnail creation with the ImageMagick suite (convert FILE -thumbnail "200x200>' `basename FILE .jpg`.th.jpg) and it takes upwards of 8 minutes to complete. The whole time it's running, 'top' reports the server load as follows: load average: 1.06, 1.00, 0.81 And the CPU usage is around 9%. Interestingly, if I run the same command and have it create .png instead, it takes longer, but I won't go there just yet. My question is, is this the expected performance on something like this, or should I be able to get better results? Is there something I should or could do to speed up disk based processes? Or is this something where it's more memory intensive and I need to look at adding more (right now it has 2 GiB of memory.) This problem is causing one of our web sites to time out because it's trying to process hundreds of image files and generate thumbnails, and it's taking forever to do that. So I'm starting at the bottom of the pile here, hardware. I would like to set up CentOS on 4 SATA hard drives that I would like to configure in RAID10. I read somewhere that Raid10 support is in the latest kernel, but I can't seem to get anaconda to let me create it. I only see raid 0, 1, 5, and 6. Even when I tried to set up raid5 or raid1, it would not let me put the /boot partition on it, and I though that this was now possible. Is it possible for me to set up the configuration I'm looking for? Russ

I have just built cinelerra on CentOS 5 x86_64 and thought I should share my notes here for people who need it but cannot wait for the package to become available on rpmforge/dag. - Install the src.rpm for FC6 - Edit the .spec file and change the line BuildRequires: OpenEXR-devel to BuildRequires: openexr-devel - Create a symlink: ln -s /usr/include/OpenEXR /usr/include/openexr - Run rpmbuild You need to have all devel packages required. The main problem I encountered was that the FC6 version wants the OpenEXR package and the one I could find for CentOS was all in lowercase. Then during the compilation, it refers to /usr/include/OpenEXR thus the symlink. I don't know the exact consequences this modification would bring about. For now, the rebuilt rpm installed on my system without a hitch and the program runs well. Akemi

Hi all, I am using centos 5. I need the screen to always be on. I have gone into System -> Preferences -> Screen saver and then I unchecked the "Activate screen saver when computer is IDLE" setting. I also edited the xorg.conf and commented out the dpms line. However, my screen is still going into some kind of screen saver. What else is there to disable? Thanks, Jerry

system crash by "find"

I connected to a machine running CentOS 5.0 x86_64 and issued a command: find / -name filename -print Now, this machine is not responding to a ping. I have a redhat 9 server I would like to migrate (install Centos on a new machine, and move the necessary files) to Centos 5. On the RH9 machine, I use LPRng for printing. This was mainly choosen because it makes it easy to control access to the printers using /etc/lpd.perms, something I never figured out how to do in cups. All printer queues are raw printers, the printer driver in Windows takes care of the rest. Anyone having success with LPRng on a newer RHEL/Centos? CentOS 4.4 - added disk prevents system from booting past initrd

Hi people, I ran into one of these silly issues I'd like to share as I think the reason behind it may be a flaw in the current initrds. The setup; Dual-Xeon Intel-chipset motherboard. SATA-disk attached to ICH, onboard Adaptec SCSI-controller. Installed system, updated packages, no problems. Basic, non-LVM partition setup - OS-disk is /dev/sda, single filesystem-partition /dev/sda1 is labeled LABEL=/, and fstab uses the label to access the filesystem. I now add a SCSI-disk (previously used) to the onboard SCSI-controller, and the fun starts. The onboard controller is identified as scsi0 and scsi1, the SATA-disk sits on scsi2. SCSI-disk is thus /dev/sda, and SATA-disk becomes /dev/sdb. This should not be a problem as the fstab refers to the partition by label and not device name. And then disaster! While booting, the system issues 'Checking root filesystem' (I'm not 100% sure about the output here), and craps out on a badly broken /dev/sda1. On the SCSI-disk, /dev/sda1 is an extended partition, with /dev/sda5 being the partition that holds the filesystem. Thus fsck'ing /dev/sda1 does not bring any useful. But why? Why does the initrd insist on fsck'in /dev/sda1, when it should check LABEL=/? Is there something I'm not getting here? -S -- Simen Thoresen, Dolphin ICS Systems Administration and Wulfkit Support

Does anyone know how to diagnose the error "Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address xxxxxx"? I got this error (followed by a panic and a crash) on a server running CentOS 4.4 with the 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp kernel. The machine is based on an Intel 975XBX2 motherboard (975X chipset). I have built several of these and they have been extremely stable. This one is an Asterisk PBX. It was up for over a month before this crash. installing raid1 via serial terminal during install

Hello, I'm wanting to install centos via serial terminal on to a box without monitor. It will be administered remotely via ssh. I've got two disks in it and would like to use raid1 with this system, but i'd like to get this going preferably during or immediately after the install. My problem as i see it is installing grub on to both hard disks, you have to get a shell window during the install for that otherwise the box won't boot. Does anyone have this working? Thanks. Dave.

Now, this is an embarrassing situation. I spoke too soon. After installing CentOS 5, I left this particular system unpatched *on purpose* so that I can observe the kernel oops caused by the known cifs bug. Because the system crash did not occur for a few days, I had forgotten about it. Apparently, the find command triggered the crash. Now that the system is proven unstable, I will go ahead and install the patched cifs.ko provided by Johnny. Sorry for the noise, but I needed to confirm that the patch really works. Akemi

Issues with r8169 gige on boot.

Hi all, I've recently upgraded a system from CentOS 4.4 to CentOS5, and now when the system boots, the r8169 ethernet card doesn't come up. After the boot sequence, if I type "ifup eth1 | ifup eth1.10 | ifup eth1.203" then the adapter starts up ok. It seems to be something with the boot sequence it loads the ethernet adapters a different way around (ie 4.4 eth0 is now eth1 and eth1 is now eth0). Is there a way to revert this? I am experimenting with the kernel (as some of you may know), and I have added a whole slew of traces in some relatively sensitive code in the lower levels of the page cache and i/o functions. Most of this tracing not only works but is highly revealing as to what the kernel is doing and why. recording sound: how 2 control recording level?

Hi gang! I'm trying to record (to .wav files) sound coming in on the line input of my sound card (in this case, output of a tape deck). For LISTENING purposes, I can control the level with the Gnome Mixer. However, the RECORDING level is not affected by the mixer. As a result, the recorded audio is badly clipped and horribly distorted. I don't understand enough about how this stuff works to have a clue how to troubleshoot this problem. Can someone offer helpful advice? I'm installing CentOS 4.4 64-bit Enterprise on a Dell Dimension with and AMD dual core 3800+. When it starts to load eth0 it hangs. I have not found a way to break out of it. Or how to boot at run level 0. So newby Question 1 how do I get it to boot without loading eth0 so I can make changes? Question 2 what is a likely problem and fix. Problems with RAID0 array on new server

Hello, i recently installed Centos 5 on a new server with a single scsii disk. After the installation, i added 2 additional disks that were once the components of a raid0 array on another server. I get some errors and am unable to start the array the following is an extract from dmesg output: md: Autodetecting RAID arrays. md: could not open unknown-block(8,17). md: could not open unknown-block(8,33). i then examined each disk in fdisk Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 17501 17921008 fd Linux raid autodetect Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 17501 17921008 fd Linux raid autodetect I tried to re-create the array and get this: mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 mdadm: chunk size defaults to 64K mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdb1: No such device or address mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdc1: No such device or address mdadm: create aborted yet obviously the devices are there. what else should i look at. putting the drives back in the old server, and the array comes up with all data intact. Hi all, I've just upgraded my home network to a Linksys SRW2024 (with lovely vlan trunking support!) and I'm trying to enable jumbo frames. When I try to set the MTU of an rtl8169 based network card (it's a Netgear RA311), it comes up with an error stating: # ifconfig eth1 mtu 9000 SIOCSIFMTU: Invalid argument The only options it will take are 1500 or below. unexpected mass closing of terminal windows

Hello, I apologize if this isn't quite the right spot to ask, but I did some googling on fc6, rhel5, centos5, terminal closings, etc and came up blank. Three times since I installed CentOS5 on this machine (11 days ago), I have had ***all my my terminal windows spontaneously exit***. For example: just now, I have a CD playing, firefox open with a few tabs, and emacs open. I also had ~5 terminal windows open, one for email and four for work. While typing an email on a remote machine in pine, *all* of my terminal windows exited. Just plain disappeared. Everything else, including the emacs copy started from one of those terminals, is running fine. It's a frustrating thing to see happen! Has anyone else experienced this? This is in the gnome desktop, x86-64 install, all the latest updates from yum. The machine is a nforce3 board with 1 gig of ram, Athlon64, sata drive, and NFS mounted home directories. Thanks, Brian

Dear list, for the purpose of installing a qlogic driver into my system, I need the exact kernel source version mentioned above. The kernel version is a dependency for the cluster suite (for centos4) package, which has been installed using yum (yum install cman gfs [...]). Where can I get the kernel source for this exact version? The only one which is offered to me by yum is version 2.6.9-42.0.10, which I could re-link of course with /usr/src/linux-2.6, but isn't there a nicer way? is asking thankfully Sebastian

How to get arcnet working with other-than-root accounts?

Hello! I've successfully gotten the arcnet driver compiled and installed into a Centos kernel. Admittedly, with a lot of help. Currently, I'm using the following script to get arcnet up and running: cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.9/linux-2.6.9/drivers/net/arcnet insmod arcnet.ko insmod arc-rawmode.ko insmod com20020.ko insmod com20020-pci.ko node=3 device=arc0 timeout=3 backplane=0 clockp=0 clockm=0 insmod rfc1201.ko ifconfig arc0 up The raw-recv and raw-send examples now work after this, but only when run as root. When run as a regular user, I get: socket: Operation not permitted So: what can I do to remove that root-only restriction? Thank you! Chip Campbell

Default printer environment variable

Hello All, I'm trying to get the iSeries Access for Linux client (IBM 5250 emulator) working on a CentOS 4.4 system. The client is mostly working - it connects to the remote AS/400, the custom keymap I created is recognized, etc. The only problem is printing to a local printer. The docs for the client state that it reads the default printer environment variable to figure out which printer to print to on the local side. What's the default printer environment variable? $PRINTER? I'm lost on this one since I've never had to set it before. I know that I can create a ~/.lpoptions file and put the default printer in there, but that's not going to work with this IBM 5250 emulator. Any tips/help appreciated.
