samba centos and cups client errors

Hello, I have a CentOS 4.4 box acting as a print server with a cups backend and samba 3.2.4. I recently ran yum which updated both cups and cups-libs, but i do not think this is my problem. I've added windows drivers to the samba sharea and have in the past printed a test page to the printer. Now when i atempt to do this with a word document from a windows box, i am getting the error: client not authorized. It is showing me connecting to the print$ share as my user which have SePrintOperatorPrivilege, then i get the error from cups about the client not being authorized. Any help appreciated. Thanks. cpuspeed on centos 5

It appears as cpuspeed is not running on my centos 5 box(s). One is a biostar motherboard Am2 6400+ the other is Asus am2 4800+. If I do "service cpuspeed stop" it says OK, If I do a "service cpuspeed start" is says OK. However at no time is cpuspeed running. /proc/cpuinfo only shows the cpu running at 1000 Mhz. If I manually run "cpuspeed -C & " I now have cpuspeed running as a process and /proc/cpuspeed shows 2200 mhz. service cpuspeed stop then stops this process as it should. service cpuspeed start does not start cpuspeed again... Any ideas? Jerry

I've been burned by Sata not working on an Asus motherboard (nVidia / nForce) and need to select something that will work for a fairly light duty web/mail/sql server. How do I go about finding out if a specific motherboard will work with sata software raid and Centos 4.4 (or 5.x when it's settled down). Hi i am very new to CentOS. I obtain CentOS 5 on dvd, and have made successful install. When installing vmware server 1.0.2 i found there is problem with different kernel version name: $uname -r Return 2.6.18-8.el5xen, but on system i have. /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-8.1.1.el5-i686 I search the net, and find this is a problem in CentOS 5, but did not find any solution for this. Can you show me the way for this. Folks, As much as I hate to, I feel I need to post my long story and ask help. Shortly after the release announcement, I kicked off rtorrent and downloaded the CD and DVD images. Since my cable provider does my "throttling", I disabled throttling and shared for several days, "returning" several GBs at no objectionable loss I could discern. While that was going on, I used cdrecord (don't jump to conclusions here, read on) via CLI to burn the CDs. This on a fully-up-to-date CentOS... well here uname -a Linux centos01.homegroannetworking 2.6.9-42.0.10.EL #1 Tue Feb 27 09:24:42 EST 2007 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux $ lsb_release -a LSB Version: :core-3.0-ia32:core-3.0-noarch:graphics-3.0- ia32:graphics-3.0-noarch Distributor ID: CentOS Description: CentOS release 4.4 (Final) Release: 4.4 Codename: Final CD writer is a generic 52x24x52x that I have used to burn many CDs before w/o problems. On this unit and the other I'll mention, the writer is master on IDE channel 2. Neither has an HD on that channel currently. The other unit has SATA drives and the writer is again on IDE 2 by itself. Disc 1 passes media check and 2 - 6 fail consistently. Checks OK: ...CentOS-5.0-Old]$ md5sum -c md5sum.txt CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-1of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-2of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-3of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-4of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-5of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-6of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-DVD.iso: OK IIRC, I also used the sha1 check (can't recall the command ATM) and it also passed. Rtorrent unreliable (don't giggle - there's a difference in the images as evidenced by "cmp" below)? Download all but the DVD directly from the UofGA mirror. Save them in ...CentOS-New. Do similar things. ...CentOS-5.0-New]$ md5sum -c md5sum.txt CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-1of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-2of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-3of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-4of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-5of6.iso: OK CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-6of6.iso: OK md5sum: CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-DVD.iso: No such file or directory CentOS-5.0-i386-bin-DVD.iso: FAILED open or read md5sum: WARNING: 1 of 7 listed files could not be read Burned the CDs again. Media checks same as before - 1st passes and all others fail. Did again on the LFS machine, same results. All media as RW, some <=12x, some <=4x speeds. Was rewriting over media previously used for CentOS 4.0 install (keeping 4.3 CDs available) and other miscellaneous previously used RW CDs. Well... maybe they are bad now? All the ones I tried?! Unlikely. But be the type to avoid assumptions, burned disc 2 again on new media. It still fails. Jorge, in his long-running condemnation of Linux kernel SCSI implementations, again mentions his usual in the docs he provides and specifically states that kernel >=2.5 has problems (at least the rants about the wort-ever SCSI implementations have abated). So I figure I'll use something that does not involve CLI. BTW, by now I've learned that there are differences between the rtorrent created and downloaded-from-mirror images. So I go to my trusty CentOS desktop, get nautilus going, right the disc 2 image and write to CD. No improvement. Last data point. Right after I downloaded from the UofGA mirror, I did a cmp. All the rtorrent vs direct download images showed a byte difference at offset 32768 of "line 1". My rtorrent was still running (IIRC) serving others. OMG! Am I delivering corrupted images to many other users! I immediately shut down rtorrent. When I do the cmp *now*, now differences are noted. I checked cable seating on the "target" machine. OK. I tried reading the CDs on the same unit(s) that created them. I'm now suspecting "wetware" problems. ATM, I probably can't see the forest for the trees. Any thoughts, wisecracks, suggestions are welcome. TIA -- Bill

CentOS 5 x86: Missing features

Hi, I am surprised how some features are missing from CentOS 5. So far, I found missing: 1) GNOME Session does not prompt for saving on log out. 2) There isn't a "Run" option in the GNOME menus for running programs.

Can't load Centos 5 on laptop

I can load Centos 4.4 fine, but 5 won't even begin to load, it can't even read the kernel from the CD. I got another cheaper laptop, and that one loads fine with Centos 5, the same DVD I try in the Pro-star laptop. What would cause that? I've never seen it before. I'm trying to load DVD x86 32bit DVD. Thanks.

Where are the debuginfo packages for CentOS 5? I see from <http:// lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2007-April/078307.html> that CentOS 4 ones are at <http://vault.centos.org/>, but I don't see any for CentOS 5. //winserver/winshare /linuxdir smbfs username=username,password=password, this line doesn't work for me in fstab in CentOS 5 to mount a Windows share, it works in other versions of RH. Any Ideas? Will using Windows NFS server/client (some reading required) work better than Samba?

Hello, Does anybody knows if the rt61 driver from rt2x00.serialmonkey.com works under centos 5? And if so, what is the recommended command to build this driver from sources, 'make install' or 'make install-fedora'? Thanks a lot! I need this driver for my ralink wlan card on my notebook. I also could build this driver under a fresh centos 5 installation, but it freezes my notebook if trying to start the network interface wlan0 (WPA2, AES). Centos 5 FTP install failure

I set up to install via ftp with "linux askmethod" I put all the addresses in manually. Do my drive partitioning and everything and then get: "Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: anaconda-base-2007" Turns out that I forgot to switch the cable to the switch port with the proper VLAN. So of course it could not find anything on the network. It seems to me that with the Centos 4 ftp install, I got a warning about not being able to reach the ftp server BEFORE the graphical install started. It was a real time-wasting pain, going all the way through to the abort point until I finally looked down at the switch and said, "DAH!"

I just installed EMC PowerPath 5.0.0 and Navisphere Agent and CLI on a CentOS 4.4/x86_64 system. When I try to start naviagent, I get the error below. Before upgrading to CentOS4.4, this same system had RHEL3 ES for x86_64 on it, and the same problem was encountered. I spent weeks going back and forth with EMC tech support, but the problem was never resolved. I'm hoping someone here on this list can shed more light on the cause and solution. hello all! I can not install centos 5 in graphic mode on my pc ,my VGA card is XFX6800XT,when installtion started ,it tell me that my VGA card is 6600GT,it detected wrong! And then installtion can not be run with normal display. so I install in text mode ,after installtion , I can't start Xwindow! I only could work with console. I tried to install "NVdriver 9775",an error occured ,an installtion terminated,I don't konw how to ....? It took me a long time to download centos 5,it is really "fun"! anyone help me ? thanks

Centos5: RAID1 on root/boot? [+lilo mkinitrd issues]

Hi, I did a command-line upgrade of a RHL73 server to Centos 5. It was a bit rocky road, but in the end it was successful. There's one thing that bugged me. I'm using software RAID1 consisting of /dev/hd{a,c}. No LVM or anything fancy, a number of /dev/mdX partitions, including the root (+/boot). I'd have preferred to continue using lilo as it works more easily with RAID1 root/boot setups. The deployment guide for Centos5 claims to support RAID1 boot partitions (RHEL4 didn't, and provided a pointer a site in UK which no longer works for more info), it's not clear how exactly a redundant boot block configuraton is achieved with that -- so that if you remove the primary drive, it'll still boot. Anyone have pointers for this? [I've gone through a number of sites with various hacks how to install grub on both disks, but I'm not quite sure which ones are valid, and whether those are needed anymore] .. read on if you're interested about the lilo/mkinitrd problem .. However, lilo doesn't really work, the root cause as far as I've been able to go is that '/dev/root' isn't recognized and as such not mounted. With grub this works. The init script in the initrd includes the following (automatically generated): ===8<== echo Creating root device. mkrootdev -t ext3 -o defaults,ro /dev/md0 echo Mounting root filesystem. mount /sysroot ===8<== And looking at the vast amount of RH bugs about this, it seems this root autodetection has caused significant grief, e.g., https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=197701. Cent LDAP server

Forgive my ignorance on this topic - I would like to build an LDAP server at our shop. We a native 2k3 domain and would like this Cent LDAP server to pull in all the info from AD. Then periodically, have the Cent server sync with new addition/subtractions of AD. Is there a How-To out there somewhere that someone can point me to? I have downloaded and installed JDK 1.5.0_11 by downloading and running it from SUN's site. No needs for any HOWTOs, except for how to create a link to mozilla/plugins available on SUN's site, so as to use the jre from firefox.

find-requires on rpmbuild

Dear all, It may be not problem of CentOS, but I need your help. I am using CentOS 5. It is very good distribution. When I build rpms from src.rpm using icc(intel C compiler), Some shared objects' requirements contain path of .so files. For example, in case of libjpeg, Requires: .libs/libjpeg.so()(64bit) libc.so.6()(64bit) ... should be Requires: libjpeg.so()(64bit) libc.so.6()(64bit) ... I think the extra path can be removed using basename command. But I have no idea where I should insert it. ( /usr/lib/rpm/find-requires is not call from rpmbuild? ) Thank you in advance.

Sylpheed-Claws aka Claws-Mail

Question! I took the spec from Claws-Mail (formerly called Sylpheed-Claws) of FC6 and updated it from 2.9.0 to 2.9.1 (correctly I believe). I created the rpms from the build and I suppose I will sign them and put them up on kuei-jin.org. My question is, should I give them to someone to see if what I did is correct? QA?? I didn't edit any source or anything. I know that it works because I installed it on my machine and it's fetching mail right now. I had to rebuild libetpan as well. That spec file was really simple and didn't require me to change anything other than the version number. I left everything else the same. I have srpms and debugintfo and devel packages that can be retrieved from my website if anyone wants to look at it. In hind sight, I may not have needed to rebuild lietpan but I did for the sake of completeness. I like sylpheed, there was no other pressing reason for me to bother with making the packages though. Hi, I have recently setup CENTOS ver.4.4 as our mail server and I have installed Squirrelmail as our Mail User Agent. Everything seems to be working fine but I encountered problems in one of the plugins of Squirrelmail which is the Change Password plugins that changes the password in the shadow file. The change password function doesn't seems to work because Squirrelmail replies an error message that does not allow the change password function to change the password of the users. My first guess is because of the file security setting and I can't seems to go around this. One thing I notice though is that when the file is inside the /var/www/html/ directory, the php scripts that I have tried to edit a file seems to work but if the file is outside this directory just in the case of the shadow file which is located at /etc/ directory it doesn't seems to work or it does not allow the file to be modified. Can you please help with this? I would really appreciated your help.

I am not sure if anyone else has run into this, but i did today when setting upo a samba server. http://lists.gobolinux.org/pipermail/gobolinux-users/2007-February/004413.h… In an nutshell you get an error like: "usermod: invalid numeric argument", or the user groups are never assigned, etc. So I have been managing manually. I get the exact same symptoms, etc (but doing things like appending groups, etc). Apparently it can be fixed by downgrading Shadow package to 4.0.17, however with a quick little "rpm -qa | grep shadow", I can see the version with Centos 5 is shadow-utils-4.0.17-12.el5. I have not spent much time digging in deeper as of yet, but wanted ot see if any others have had this issue in Centos 5. DK

Dumb question (KDE Trash Can)

Hi All, I've got a really dumb question. I seem to have lost my Trash Can on my KDE desktop and try and as I might I can't get it back. Anyone have any idea how I can create this again or get it back? Hello, This morning, root received an e-mail from the cron daemon as the following: -------------------------------- Subject: Cron <root> run-parts /etc/cron.daily /etc/cron.daily:00webalizer: Warning: Truncating oversized referrer field -------------------------------- I haven't changed anything to cron or to my intranet website (I'm assuming that's what the webalizer is about) in the last few days. I did do a reboot yesterday which was the first one in a few weeks. Does anybody know what this message is? Michael

OK, so setup CENTOS-5 on a laptop to learn about Xen stuff. KDE Desktop, wanted to print the virt.108.com xen howto. Needed to setup printer first. Open KDE control center, go to printers. Hear error sound, message says "Unable to retrieve the printer list.... Connection to CUPS server failed. ..." So I check to see that cups is running (it is). I check /var/log/messages and see: Apr 19 15:19:52 fox setroubleshoot: SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/cupsd (cupsd_t) "read write" access to socket:[15083] (rpm_var_lib_t). For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l 23689411-4e18-4009-b105-779c58b0503f So, I run sealert (as indicated) and see the message about cups (see below for output) I checked in /usr/share/docs/selinux-policy-2.4.6/html and find no references (using grub) for "cupsd_disable_trans" I google on "cupsd_disable_trans" and find no references either. How do I find out what this boolean object is or does? Is there a description of it somewhere? Is it dangerous to just run the command that sealert tells me to run? centso 5 modifying my ifcfg-eth[x] files

I have a machine with 2 network cards. Installing centos 5 on it. I set up both cards with static IP addresses. activate on boot etc... One is e1000 Intel the other is onboard forcedeth (nvidia). After I reboot the forcedeth ifcfg-eth1 file is changed to DHCP. I use netconfig -d eth1 to set it back up and reboot again and the changes back to DHCP. Only thing to add here is the network card does work, however I get a dmesg output that eth1 has an invalid MAC address. Is that invalid MAC address changing my setup? I dont think it should. granted I'm still looking at finding a way to reset he MAC address or something but I dont think the ifcfg-eth files should be modified. This seems like a bug- that is the reason for the post. Great work with centos 5! Jerry

using command line to setup auto login

I am trying to find a way to set auto login for a machine under X using the command line. I presume I want to use gconftool-2 to do that. Under the old X centos 4 I edited /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf This file no longer exists under X 7 for centos 5. I cant find a way to "show all" under gconftool-2 so that I can see what the key/value pair should be. When I do "gconftool-2 -a " it says it needs a directory. If you dont know what the directory is how can you give one?? I'm confused. I can goto System -> Administration -> Login Screen, then select Security and enable login. However, I need to do this action from the command line. THanks for any pointers that I am missing. Jerry

SELinux and daemons - clever way to change default locations?

I'm sure you've seen this before: You need to slightly tweak the default installation of a major daemon - let's say you're running a big MySQL database and you need to put it on a different filesystem, mounted (for example) as /db So you move /var/lib/mysql to /db/mysql (and preserve all the file attributes, including SELinux), change /etc/my.cnf accordingly, start mysqld - and it doesn't work. It turns out you need to tweak SELinux - test the daemon, run audit2allow on the audit log, tweak the policy, test again, repeat until it works. I did this many times, but it strikes me as an inefficient process. Sure, you only do it once per install, but still. I wish there was a simple way to tell SELinux "I moved the MySQL datadir (or the Squid cache dir, or the Cyrus-IMAPd spool) to this new location, but everything else stays the same, please stop bugging me." Hi I'm using python24 under centos4 for a webware application. I downloaded it from atrpms repository some time ago. I'm installing a new VPS with centos4 64bit, and can't find any python24 package! python.org pyvault doesn't support 64 bit architectures, and atrpms don't make python24 packages anymore. I don't have 64 bit architecture at home so I can't recompile python24 on my (small) vps. Please help! Regards

UML under Centos5

Has anyone been able to get UserModeLinux to work under CentOS5? I've got an image which works fine under CentOS4.4 but when I try it under CentOS5 then it hangs just after mounting root kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly. Now, I'd read this was a known issue because of a UML bug which newer host kernels exercised, so I downloaded the 2.6.21-rc7 kernel and tried using that as a guest, but still no luck. Host kernel: 2.6.18-8.1.1.el5 Guest kernel: Linux version 2.6.21-rc7 This is on an SMP box, if that makes a difference, but it shouldn't because CentOS 4.4 ran just fine as the host. I'm running out of ideas :-( -- rgds Stephen

I have Centos 5 loaded and running virt-manager. I setup a new VM and the install starts but my X cursor is not aligned with my "arrow" pointer. They also move at different rate. I am running cygwin X server on my PC. Any guess ? Alan
