Problem upgrading CentOS 4.4 installation

Hi all, I'm trying to upgrade a Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop with CentOS 4.4 installed. When dependencies is checked I receive error "Cannot unmount CD /mnt/sources...". I have CD media and I have tried both text and graphical installer. Anyone have a clue ? Maybe the spec for this laptop is to weak and I must stick with my 4.4 installation... 700Mhz 512Mb ram. When I use the graphical installer, the X server starts but does not display correctly. It is possible to use but you have to guess what and where to click sometimes. Jens

CentOS 5 gotchas

As some folks on irc have pointed out, and has been covered a bit in the beta discussions: There is no longer a 'Minimal' install option for centos5 in anaconda, however if you choose 'Customize Now' and uncheck all the selections, you will get a minimal install that only requires disk1, and weighs in at around 594MB. With kickstart it is possible to further reduce the package set. Also, for folks who are used to using vga=foo type settings as kernel options, support for this appears spotty on the initial release, and this is an upstream issue as well. Bugs have been filed in the appropriate place. For now, the workaround for some folks is to remove the 'rhgb quiet' kernel options. For others, no amount of vga= trickery seems to work. A working SIP Phone for Centos44?

I tried numerous but most of them just don't work. They fail on the quality of the microphone. I tried two that support alsa. Kphone does, but dtmf (the numbers) are not recognized by Asterisk :-( I tried X-lite, but that has really terrible voice quality (mic). Greetings CentOS developers, users, and addicts! As per earlier post, a CentOS 5 linux text install does install just fine using *only* the 1st CD (1 out of 6) if you go to custom software selection and deselect everything... very sweet!!! the same cannot be said of the default "just hit enter" GUI install... (no, I am not knocking or putting down what we were just so graciously handed by the developers) BTW, thank you CentOS Developers!!! You rock! Very smooth install on an old DL360 with Dual 1.266 GHz processors and 4 Gig DRAM, a 128M Smart Array 5304 caching controller and qty (2) 36.4 Gig 15000 rpm SCSI drives in hardware RAID1 Sweeeeeeeetttttttt... I cannot believe how SNAPPY CentOS 5 is... Sweeeeeeetttttttttt.... So excited, I just ordered some more multiprocessor toys to install it on next week. Using nVidia driver, screensaver issues

The nVidia driver is running right, but now when I try to select some screensavers, like Anemotaxis, X restarts. /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old show it aborting on a signal 11... These 3 (now wrapped) lines show up in the system log... Read performance on software RAID1?

Hi, Since the data is available in two places on a RAID1 array does the code in any way make use of that for improved performance by reading (different) data form both disks at the same time? Or is the one disk simply a slave that just receives copies of the data and is never really read from at all? Thanks

I've put a Nvidia Quadro card in my machine. It was first detected as Quadro4 200/400 NVS. I have the pigtail for dual monitors. I've tried tweaking the xorg file to get it working, to no avail. So I then downloaded the 9631 version driver from Nvidia. The readme for the newer files said that they didn't support this card. I run the installer, it builds the module, but gets stopped at "-1 Invalid module format" Now, what to do? -- --- David Woyciesjes

I'm upgrading my current RedHat9 installation to CentOS 4.4, so decided to buy the 4.4 LiveCD (rather than downloading and burning an ISO). I thought the LiveCD was simply a 'reduced' version and that I could install from it, but I find I don't actually know what to do with it and can't find any relatively simple instructions (I'm a bit of a newbie to linux but think it's great!). Any advice gratefully received - thanks. Andy

Hello, Does CentOS 5 use a better approach to 64-bits and 32-bits packages existing on the same machine? How is Upstream package selection comparing 32-bits and 64-bits editions? Should we expect third-party repositories (mainly rpmforge) to better support 64-bits packages? I want to figure out if I should use CentOS/RHEL 5 x86_64 in desktop environment.

bonding

I four nodes setup to do active-backup bonding and the drivers loaded for the bonded network interfaces vary between tg3 and e100. All interfaces with the e100 driver loaded report errors much like what you see here: bonding: bond0: link status definitely down for interface eth2, disabling it e100: eth2: e100_watchdog: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex bonding: bond0: link status definitely up for interface eth2. This happens all day on every node. I have configured the bonding module to do MII link monitoring at a frequency of 100 milliseconds and it is using basic carrier link detection to test if the interface is alive or not. There was no custom building of any modules on these nodes and the o/s is CentOS 4.3. Upgrade from 3.x to 4.x via yum

Sorry for the noob question. I am trying to upgrade an older server from 3.x to 4.x via yum. Yum is resolving the original 3.x repositories and does not appear to be moving to 4.x due to the fact it still wants to use a 2.4.x kernel. Do I need to point yum to another set of repos in order to upgrade versions? Thanks -jeff

Relocating /boot and /

Due to the peculiar way that my root drive is configured (incomplete advance planning for Windows to Linux conversion), I have had thoughts about moving /boot and / to a different place on the drive. Current configuration is: sda1 - 30Gb primary partition (was the E: drive) sda2 - 120 Gb primary partition (was my H: drive) sda3 - 100Mb /boot primary partition sda4 - Extended partition sda5 - 4Gb swap partition sda6 - 145Gb / partition I was thinking about rearranging the disk to a more conventional layout where /boot is first, swap next, / next and the rest after that. It probably isn't necessary since the drive runs fine (well, almost - last night /boot developed a weirdity in its superblock and I had to recover with the install DVD in rescue mode and using the alternate superblock, but it's back up and running, having survived the boot fsck), but I was wondering if anyone had tried something like this before. Besides, having a backup (or new) /boot might not be a bad idea after last night.... Are there any serious advantages/disadvantages to having /boot in the middle of the disk and / after it? I was thinking that I could remove the 1 & 2 partitions, recreate them with a hole in between for a (new/replacement) swap, and copy the original partitions to the new locations, then update the grub.conf and voila! (I would hope....) I'm also wondering about complications from having the swap and / partitions inside the extended partition.... Comments / suggestions / feedback (preferably polite) welcome. Hello, I've got a centos 4.4 box and i'd like to make some rpms for it. My first task is to recompile an srpm removing some options to customize it. I tried rpmbuild, which worked on a fedora install, but that command wasn't available. What rpm do i have to install to make rpms? I've got rpmdb, rpm, and rpm-libs already installed. I thought the missing one was rpm-utils, but no go. Thanks. Dave.

Hi all, I'm trying to build a local repo as a mirror of basic repos ([Basic], [Update],[Addons], [Extras],[CentOSPlus]) and popular third part repos ([Dries],[DAG] and [kbs]). The doubt I have is ¿Is needed that I regenerate the repo headers [1] every time when I've updated the local mirror repo [2]? [1] Eliminate old headers and generate new ones with createrepo script. Updates?

I just installed CentOS 4 on a new server and now I'm looking for updates that have been released. I like to keep a local mirror of all the updates so I can apply them to other machines easier/faster (this of course assuming I end up installing CentOS on more servers.) So, where are those updates mirrored? With RH/FC, I can hit any mirror and rsync the updates folders. Hi, I have tried SuSE Enterprise Desktop 10 and its fonts are very pleasing. Web browsing is very nice with Firefox and those fonts. It would be very nice to have those fonts in CentOS 5 and even CentOS 4. Searching on the net didn't help me very much. Ideas? HD/Partitions/RAID setup

I have a machine that's been configured as follows using its BIOS tools: SATA-0 is a 160 GiB drive used as boot SATA-1 and SATA-2 are both 500 GiB drives and were configured as a RAID-1 in BIOS. When the system boots up, BIOS reports 1 160 GiB SATA drive, and 1 Logical volume as RAID-1 ID#0 500 GiB, which is what I would expect it to report, as the two drives are now raided together. However, when I boot into the Centos installer and I get to configuring the partitions, it lists both sda, sdb, and sdc as available. Both sdb and sdc are 500 GiB. I would've expected to only see one drive for the RAID setup. Can someone explain why I see both drives and how am I supposed to configure them? How to create a virtual machine? (Centos-5-beta-xen)

Hi, I am trying to create a virtual machine with FC6 inside a Centos 5 (beta) Xen host. I am following the documentation of Fedora[1]. I used the "virt-install" command, and every went fine until the moment to create the partitions on the virtual disk (file "/var/xen/fc6.iso" with 10GB). No matter with option I choose: remove all partitions, remove linux partitions, use free space, etc, does not work. The message is: "An error has occurred - no valid devices were found on wihich to create new filesystems. Please check your hardware for the cause of the problem." I have a CentOs 5 beta running on a Desktop with a video card SiS 661FX, unfortunaly I can't run compixz on that card, and neither run any 3D aplications. My question is: How can I give 3D acelaration on that video card and Is there any way to run compixz. I've been looking on google about the driver for that card and I've found nothing. Any idea??. Does LVM affect performance

Hi, Pretty simple questions but probably not such a simple answer.. Does using LVM affect disk and system performnace? There must be some overhead involved (memory, cpu or disk IO) in using LVM but is that overhead measurable or is it insignificant?? beta 5 software RAID install

Hi all, I just installed the beta 5 with 2 disks for RAID. Under centos 4 I always had to issue manual grub commands to have the RAID array boot the first time. Not sure this one got through.....new to mail list. New to CentOS...very impressed with what I see so far. Have loaded trixbox/CentOS server successfully and am trying to retrofit X server and GNOME progs. Have run into same issue as discussed in this thread. Followed through to last message. But, lacking enough experience w/yum, didn't quite get the punch line. Is there a work around? Can I manually load it from some rpm and bypass this dependency? There's another thread on this issue; but it has taken a different tack and not been, as far as I can see, resolved. 2.6 memory management question

Hello all. I have a centos 4.4 box (2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp) with 7gig of ram that doesn't seem to be using swap (also 7gig now). I say "seem" because I've noticed ram utilization run around 95% (with oracle and friends running) and then firing up a couple apps to use that last 5% will stop the machine dead in it's tracks. I ran across some reading[0] about /proc/sys/vm/swappiness and how it affects the kernels decisions when dealing with swap, but it's not all that clear to me whether this is the source of the problem. It seems like the kernel just isn't using swap at all. I've double checked my swap partition in fstab, ran mkswap again, double checked it's availability with vmstat -s but still it's just not getting used. Sunday, the box died around 3am and sar seems to show memory use on the rise right up till it hurled[1] (I just stuck another gig in the box monday, so sar only shows 6gig on sunday) Anyone know whats up with this? PS: swap is an LVM partition. How should I create a repo on Centos 2.1?

I tracked down a createrepo rpm "for RHL 7.x, AS 2.1" etc (hosted by Dag), but it's uninstallable. Eventually I managed to create an rpm from the source (actually, that's fairly easy when onw knows to say "python2"), but python-urlgrabber has completely defeated me. According to Dag, the problem is that "upstream" doesn't see the need to support RHAS2.1/Centos2.1/RHL7.x amd such. While I can, if forced, solve the problem by a personal visit to the site or by creating a repo on the other side of the Internet, there should be a better general solution. From LiveCD, mount hda1 gives resource busy

Hello: I booted from the CentOS 4.4 CD. I am trying to mount the partitions on the hard drive of the physical machine (Fedora Core). I did: mkdir /mnt/hda1 chmod 755 /mnt/hda1 mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 I get back: mount: /dev/hda1 already mounted or /mnt/hda1 busy I checked with df. I don't see hda1 anywhere. UPS question

Hello folks, I'm about to install Centos on a new server and this will be my first "exposure" if you will to Centos. I come from an RH/Fedora background. Anyway, is there a list somewhere that will tell me what UPS batteries are compatible with Centos 4 (brand/model)? I figured before I go out and buy something I better check to see what's supported. 3ware cards and new firmware in 9.4.1 codeset

I just saw the following in the release notes for the new firmware for the later 3ware cards; Improved CIFS performance The firmware has been tuned to greatly increase performance with CIFS (Common Internet File System) protocol. However, this has resulted in performance with the Linux ext3 file system that is slower than earlier releases. We recommend that you use other Linux file systems, such as XFS. So it looks like ext3 performance would be worse. What are they thinking? They are going to drive linux people away. -- MailScanner is like deodorant... You hope everybody uses it, and you notice quickly if they don't!!!!

CentOS 4 - prevent X from installing?

So, I've just gone through a enw CentOS 4.4 install. I selected the "Custom" installation type, and then in the part for selecting which packages to install, I specifically did NOT select X, Gnome or KDE, nor any of the graphical tools. However, when it finished installing and rebooted, I still ended up with X installed, a graphical login screen and default run level of 5. Does anyone know which default packages might have caused X Windows to have been dragged in? I'll do some digging, but I had an idea this might be a common problem. Hi Firstly apologies but i have to install an app that uses postgres but i am more a MySQL/Oracle guy so i maybe doing something really wrong here.. I am following instructions for creating a DB user and encountering this # createuser -ADP -U postgres foo Enter password for new user: Enter it again: createuser: could not connect to database template1: FATAL: IDENT authentication failed for user "postgres" In a standard postgres install whats causing this? I presume its because the user postgres has a pwd but what is this and why am i not being prompted to enter this? Thanks and apologies as i know this is not directly a CentOS problem

Hello, Anyone know a method to discriminate traffic by preference?, for example this channels: High preference traffic. Low preference traffic. All traffic in the same interface eth0, and two servers in the same machine, one in slow channel and one in high preference channel. Hi, I want to set up a Student Tracking system. So I installed ClaSS (ClaSS Student System). I set it up according to the README file. After configuring, I had to do a few things via web browser to configur the database by using the below URL. http://localhost/class-site/class/install/ Therafter I got the below info and I also had to fill a little bit. Welcome to the ClaSS Installation script. What you are doing. You should have already unpacked class into the top-level of your web directory. You should have already created a MySQL user account (with full privileges) to connect to the MySQL server. You will need to give a name for the ClaSS database you want created and of a separate password for ClaSS to use when connecting to MySQL. Need I say you should be running Firefox as your browser (with Javascript and Cookies switched to on). In other words, you need to know what you are doing... If you would like any further help or documentation please refer to the Your MySQL Account. Please supply details of an existing administrator's account on the MySQL server you are installing to. Name of host machine: User-name: Current Password: The ClaSS MySQL Account. The database to be created could be called anything but usually related to the school it serves. WARNING: any existing database on this server with that name will be forever overwritten! You may want to back-up first. A new MySQL account will be created for ClaSS with limited privileges. Be aware that if you have other installations of class running on this MySQL server then changing the ClaSS Connection Password here WILL STOP them connecting. In that case you must use the same password here! Name of ClaSS Database: ClaSS Connection Password: Re-enter Connection Password: Go Install. If you have completed all the above information: I configured the database. Then, It gave a sucessfull message. Then, Finnaly, I had to browse with below URL. http://localhost/class-site/ But , I got a blank page. Why is that? Is anybody out there runnging ClaSS? ClaSS documentation says, below list is fine with ClaSS. PEAR::DB 1.6.2 PHP 4.3.10-13 Apache 1.3.33 MySQL 4.0.24 But, My list is aliitle bit diffrent. I am running apache 2.x on CentOS 4.4. getting iptables log out of /var/log/messages

Hi, I have been trying to get the messages from iptables out of /var/log/messages with no luck. I tryied this settings: iptables -j LOG --log-level warn in /etc/syslog.conf kern.warn /var/log/critical kern.none;.... /var/log/messages # have no other call to kern o warn in syslog.conf service syslogd restart itpables -L -nv|grep LOG All seems ok, but the messages are still getting into /var/log/messages Is there a problem with iptables from Centos4.4 ? Hmmmm... Trying to load http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/6/isos/ results in a Not Found message but trying to load http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/5/isos/ returns a Forbidden error. VMWare vs Parallels, and Zen

I've seen several references to running VMWare under CentOS, but does anybody know how well Parallels runs under CentOS? On a related note, now that Zen is as mature as it is, are commercial VMs really much better than Zen? Miark
