Hmmmm... Trying to load http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/6/isos/ results in a Not Found message but trying to load http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/5/isos/ returns a Forbidden error. hard disk move to another server

Hello everyone. I am looking for a way to move a CentOS 4 installed production hard disk to another system (which has another hardware). The first has an nvidia sata controller (sata_nv), but the second has a via sata (sata_via). For all the rest of the hardware it can upgrade well I know, but if the sata driver is different, then the system doesn't boot because the proper driver is not included in the initrd file (grub still boots OK). Here is the error message: Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel. Red Hat nash version 4.2.1.8 starting mount: error 6 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none switchroot: mount failed: 22 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Does anyone know how I could upgrade easily this initrd file to contain the proper driver, and even from another partition? Would it be possible to keep an old config-xx file and do an rpm upgrade which would automatically recompile a proper initrd-xx file for that new system? Thanks for any help. Daniel

Understanding that much work is probably being done on Centos 5, are there plans to keep Cluster Suite's files updated? Specifically, the kernel modules haven't been recompiled for newer kernel versions. I'm going to recompile them myself from the SRPMS, but was wondering about the future... Thanks, Tarun

ok... if this can be useful for somebody. Finally, we can download the appropriate driver (cpqiss....), put it in a floppy and use it. But, ... Centos can't use it... We use a copy of RH Enterprise and all ran ok. So, Centos is not 100% compatible. And, now, RHEL don't recognize the Ethernet Card. Maybe we will buy RHEL and get the appropriate driver for being totally operative. I will keep you informed. Or, if you have a better idea. I will appreciate it. Thanks for all. XEN Paravirtualized CentOS5 beta on CentOS5 beta

Dear All, I'm trying to install CentOS5 beta as paravirtualized guest on a CentOS5 Xen host using virt-manager. Everything seems to go OK. I'm able to run virt-manager and fill-out all the details. Because you can only do a http/ftp/nfs install when setting up a paravirtualized guest using virt-manager, I made the whole contents of the CentOS5 beta DVD available via ftp. The start of the system looks fine. I can provide details about networking, but then I get a screen which ask me to fill-out the CentOS install directory(is "suggests" the same directory I used in virt-manager). But whatever I use it doesn't accept it. I am confident that I provided the correct directory, because the screens show CentOS on it. Also I created the ftp install-source as per the documentation. I've also tested it with fedora core 6 as described in the screenshots on virt-manager.et.redhat.com (e.g used the same install-source: ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/6/i386/os/) but no luck there. A screenshot is attached that contain the screen I get over and over. Did anybody succeed in getting CentOS5 running as guest in CentOS5? Kind regards, Patrick

command to ensure other command does last longer than 5 seconds

Hi, I am wondering if there exists a centos command that runs another command and ensures the second command doesnt take more than x seconds? When x is given on the command line. If the second command is not "done" the first command will just kill it and both exit. Does such a method or command exist? I just need to ensure the second command does just continue to run and run and run. Thanks, Jerry

CentOS 4 DNS Server not listening

I installed CentOS 4 on a new box to use as a DNS server. It is a basic server install. I configured named and it is all up and running fine. It just isn't listening on Port 53. It also (obviously) does not respond to DNS requests. Requests from the machine itself are processed just fine, so the service is working. It just can't be used by other machines. Not good for a public DNS server. I did install and turn on SELinux. Maybe that was a mistake? I've not worked with SELinux before. Thanks for any ideas, Michael

Troubles with starting CentOS beta 5

Hi list I'm new here, but I've been using CentOS for about 2 years. Connecting to a Novell Server

I am trying to connect our centos 4.4 machines to our Novell Netware 5 servers. The goal is to allow the centos 4.4 clients to connect to the server and access shared folders. We are not looking for a single sign-on style solution just the ability to connect. I have tried searching google but I did not find anything really usefull as most of the hits pointed toward SUSE and in our case we have need to stick with a RHEL style distro. If anyone has done this type of setup I would appreciate any information you have. Thank you, Rob

intel se7501wv2 interrupt problem?

I'm having some really odd issues with the networking on this old Intel se7501wv2 The network card onboard is an Intel Corporation 82546EB I'm getting quite a lot of "[Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out" when I attempt to download updates on this machine. Other machines on my network do not appear to be plagued with the same disconnect problems. Not sure what kernel flags I should try, I've tried noht and noapic at the moment. I've also tried setting the network card to half duplex to see if that helps. ethtool -s eth0 duplex half No luck so far. -Mike

Funny that IBM went one better and open sourced JFS instead. I'm in kind of the same boat as you since I was an OS/2 user before I switched to Linux. I think the HPFS information was from a discussion as to why IBM couldn't open source OS/2 as a means of continuing support. Remember, we're talking about the same Microsquish that has attempted to patent the FAT file system. I'd be very surprised if NTFS wasn't IP encumbered. unable to build rpm from cvsnt.spec file on Centos4.4

Hi Friends, I downloaded the cvsnt 2.5.04.2047 version from achrives. I using Centos 4.4 and I am trying to install cvsnt through cvsnt.spec file. When I run the command rpmbuild --bb cvsnt.spec I get the below error at the end. I don't know the reason why the rpmbuilding is failing . What package or rpm do I need to install to fulfill this dependency or get rid of this error ? Reboot Issues

Hello Everyone, I've got Centos 4.4 installed and fully updated on an ASUS M2NBP-VM CSM Motherboard. When I issue a 'shutdown -r now' or an 'init 6' it goes through the shutdown sequence and then after the final message "rebooting system" it just sits there and has have it's reset switch manually pressed. When I issue a 'shutdown -h now' or a 'halt -p' it shuts down and powers down properly. My bet is that it's an ACPI issue but I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting it. Any thoughts? Remtoe Install/Anaconda

I have started playing around with remote installs using vnc and kickstart files. However I cannot seem to find a good listing of anaconda parameters. And where I am running into problems is with the display. Say that I am using a kickstart file and I don't want it to establish a vnc connection or to show progress on the console what can I provide to anaconda to do this? When I add text to the kernel line then it goes into an attended install and doesn't read from the kickstart file. If I sepecify nothing for the display it prompts at the console what display to use. I should start off by saying that I know a lot more about linux than I do z/series hardware.... I've tried centos 3.3 and 4.4 for s390 and s390x, if it make any difference.... Trying to install 4.4 on an lpar on a z9-BC and having trouble figuring out how to get the OSA adapter working. I've been told that when I ftp-boot from the iso image, I should choose "eth" for adapter type, and enter "0xe38,0xe39,0xe3a" for the addresses. For the additional parameters, I've tried: add_parms,0x10,(0xe38,0xe3a),portname:CHIP00 portname:CHIP00 and just hitting enter (which looks like it's supposed to work with centos 4.4, but not 3.3) After subsequently entering the various IP params (addr, net addr, mask, fqdn, and so on), I typically get messages somewhat like the one below (copied verbatim from the s390x with 4.4 attempt): IPv6 over IPv4 tunneling driver divert: not allocating divert_blk for non-ethernet device sit0 qeth: loading qeth S/390 OSA-Express driver cat: /sys/devices/qeth/0xe38/if_name: No such file or directory SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device Can anyone shed a little light on what I should be doing? Problems with SATA DVD+-RW drive

I just got a Dell Dimension e521 (AMD 64 x2, nVidia MCP51 chipset) and so far it has been fine. Today I tried to burn some CD-R and DVD-R disks and have been able to do nothing but make coasters. The drive is a TSST TS-H653a (Samsung OEM) and does have the current firmware. Playing back data, audio, and video disks work just fine, but recording is a different matter. The drive shows up as /dev/scd0 and all the symlinks for /dev/cdrom, /dev/cdwriter, /dev/dvd, and /dev/dvdwriter point to that device. Both cdrecord and growisofs complete without any errors, but when I try to remount the just-recorded disk I get an error: [jleafey@jaybird Downloads]$ mount /media/cdrecorder/ /dev/scd0: Invalid argument mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only /dev/scd0: Invalid argument mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified I have also tried to explicitly mount it specifying the device and fs type: [jleafey@jaybird Downloads]$ sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 \ /media/cdrecorder/ mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0, or too many mounted file systems The output of dmesg shows the message "cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!" when this happens. Since I also get an error on the eject command UNLESS RUN AS ROOT (eject: unable to eject, last error: Inappropriate ioctl for device) I thought it might be a permission problem, but the device (/dev/scd0) is showing up as being "owned" by me, courtesy of Gnome no doubt. I get the bad burns whether I run as root or a regular user. At this point I don't know whether to think the problem is with cdrecord or the sata_nv driver. Cluster Services

Hello, we are running CentOS 4.3 and the latest cluster suite packages from the csgfs yum repository for this release and need to delete a cluster member. According to the documentation we need to restart all cluster related services on all remaining nodes in the cluster after the node has been removed. This is a four node cluster so removing one node obviously degrades the cluster to three nodes, but we can have the remaining cluster members recalculate the number of votes to remain quorate. It still surprises me that we have to bring down the entire cluster just because we are deleting a node. Any feedback as to why this might be?

I've been reading up on recommended partitioning scheme and looking at Centos 5 beta's default scheme, it struck me that with LVM, it doesn't matter any more as long as we leave aside enough room for /boot, does it? Or am I still missing something here? Thanks!

Problem with gettid() on CentOS 5/gcc 4.1.1

I can't get the simple program below to compile on CentOS 5 beta. It compiles (and runs) just fine on CentOS 4.4, and I'm using gettid() as described in the man page. I wonder if this is a problem with RHEL 5 as well, but I don't have a system to test on. I also wonder if this is a gcc 4.1.1 issue or something missing in CentOS 5. The issue is that the _syscall0 macro is not defined anywhere. If I copy and paste the following definition for _syscall0 from a CentOS 4.4 system into the test program, it works just fine: #define _syscall0(type,name) \ type name(void) \ {\ return syscall(__NR_##name);\ } Has anyone else run into this problem? CentOS 4.4 32 bits not recognizing disks

Hi, I have to install this server with an Intel motherboard ASUS, model P5VDC-MX. It has a VIA hardware RAID controller model VT-8251. The two hard drives are SATA (don't know if II) and are Maxtor STM380211AS. Problem is that CentOS installation doesn't recognize any hard drives at all. Hi, I am trying to migrate one of my systems to a VMware virtual machine.. The PC is an IDE drive using LVM and the virtual machine is a SCSI drive using ordinary partitions.. Basically I rsynced the entire filesystem from the physical to the virtual machine and that seemed to work just fine.. I installed grub onto the drive in the virtual machine and its booting fine.. The problem comes when the new system trys to scan for the LVM setup that was on the previous PC.. I thought it would scan the drive, and seen that there are no LVM partitions and move on but it doesn't it has a kernel panic and flashes the cap lock and scroll lock LED's on the keyboard.. Obviously somewhere its being told there should be an LVM partition or its being told to scan hda rather than sda.. I have checked the grub.conf and fstab files and they are all right for the new drive setup.. So where is the LVM config? How do I tell it there are now LVM volumes that need to be accessed?
