scsi drive assignment problem

I have a server which may or may not have a USB storage device connected when it boots. It also attaches to a disk array with a number of logical disks using ISCSI. When booted with the USB device present, that is attached to /dev/sdb and the ISCSI disks are attached to /dev/sdc up. If the USB device is not present, then the ISCSI disks are attached to /dev/sdb onwards. Is there a way to force the USB device not to be attached at all, or to delay it until after the ISCSI disks have been attached so that I get a predictable assignment of device names to the ISCSI disks? DISAATER RECOVERY PROBLEM

Hi Guys, I am trying to set up a quick disaster recovery methodology for a client. It is supposed to work as follows:- All Data files , everything in /etc (except for a few hardware specific files such as fstab), all users .bashrc and .netrc files, all cron tables etc. is written to a DVD as a zipped tar file. A recovery script that unpacks this file, creates any directories required by the application that are not backed up etc. is also written to the DVD. The DVD is then mounted on a freshly installed system (Centos4.4 at present) and the restore script is run. This restors all the saved files on the DVD to their original positions and creates empty directories where required for the application to run. The recovery system is then rebooted and the differences in hardware are taken care of by "kudzu" removing hw that was present on the "old" system and installing hardware present on the "new" system - typically network cards, usb controllers, scsi controllers, IDE controllers and graphics cards. All of the above works perfectly. However when I then log in to the recovered system as a user via ssh, or directly on a tty (non-gui), the login process does not execute the instructions in the user's .bashrc file and I get a shell prompt with none of the required environmental variables set - also the last line in the .bashrc is an exec of a script that bring up the application - this does not happen. When I log in to the gui desktop as the user and then open a terminal screen the instructions in the .bashrc do get executed and the application runs as it should. Any ideas of where to look ? Any compelling reasons to upgrade to 5

Just popped back on the list because I was curious about this. I've read the information about virtualization and other new features. I'm just wondering (as someone who installed CentOS 2 years ago and basically hasn't thought much about it my OS other than using it since then) if any piece of it except for virtualization got updated significantly enough to consider an upgrade. My machine right now is running great. Everything is just how I like it. Enhanced desktop search would be nice (but then I thought Beagle was Mono and thus not included). As would a nicer version of Gnome. But I'm just not sure if the jump is big enough to make it worth it. Anyone know? I'm getting that upgrade itch that comes from back in the days when I upgraded SuSE, Mandrake, Red Hat, Fedora, etc. every 6 months. Having a machine running solid for 2 years is weird for me and I'm getting that itch, but I'm wondering if there isn't any solid reason to bother with it. Preston

How to limit a user to access a few sites.

Hi , I am now running squid with ncsa_auth. I have bound ip addresses to usernames. So users now can access Internet from their ips. Now I want a few users to prevent from accessing all the sites. But Instead, I want them to allow to access a few sites scuh as google.com,cnn.com, bbc.com. I want to limit in that way. I have wriiten below rules. SCSI, SAS and FC Controller

Greetings, Currently, we have several Direct Attached Storage (DAS) units, connected to respective servers through Adaptec SCSI Controller. 1) Most of the time we used 80Mbit/s for external SCSI devices (in this case, the DAS itself). Is it true the maximum speed for external SCSI devices would be up to 80Mbit/s? Tried to change to 320Mbit/s but somehow the kernel crashed. Is there any specific reason why some (or all) external devices can only go up to 80Mbit/s? 2) We were thinking to use SAS or FC HBA for our next DAS but I'm not sure which brand/card does has the support in CentOS/Linux in terms of kernel module/driver,compatibility and performance. Can anyone give suggestions based on their experience? TIA. -Ikmal

Disabling selinux at boot command prompt

I noticed in 4.92 there is no disabling selinux at install. It is now a firstboot option which then requires a reboot. Is there anyway to disable selinux at the boot install prompt so after the firstboot screens it wont reboot again? I presently install with "linux askmethod" so I can select NFS install. Cannot execute /usr/bin/fetchmail

Hello everyone, I'm setting up a fetchmail command to run every five minutes so I can get email from another POP3 account. The fetchmail package was installed via yum. I can execute the command manually on the command line. But I'm having trouble when it's run from cron. I have noticed that commands run via cron and execute via /bin/sh, so I tried to run the fetchmail command manually. This is what I get: [root@scalix ~]# /bin/sh /usr/bin/fetchmail /usr/bin/fetchmail: /usr/bin/fetchmail: cannot execute binary file What could be the problem here? Anyone else having problems with fetchmail? -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Follow it and there is no end. Stay with the ancient Tao, Move with the present.

Network freezes - possibly yum?

Hi. I have a CentOS 4.2 server running. I've just experience that it stops responding (http, ssh) when doing yum update pam xorg-x11 gnupg This has happened two times in a row, so I'm curious if anyone has experienced anything like this? Could it be yum or should I look for the explanation elsewhere? smartd on Centos 4.4

Hello, I'm running CentOS 4.4 and am getting an error from smartd. This machine has a single ide drive in it /dev/hda and i was getting a bootup error from smartd, so i uncommented the /dev/hda line in /etc/smartd.conf. The error persisted when i tried to restart smartd, i got a service restart failed and the below error. Any suggestions? On another unrelated subject i'm looking for an ncftp rpm for CentOS i didn't find one in the included repositories. Thanks. Dave. 4.92 and new HP dv9000 laptop

The new 4.92 installed nicely on this laptop... I am trying to get wireless networking going. I installed XEN. my kernel is 2.6.18-1.2747.el5xen I downloaded ipw3945-linux-1.2.0 This told me do download ieee80211-1.2.16 So when I try to compile ieee80211 it tells me find: /lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2747.el5xen/build/: No such file or directory egrep: /lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2747.el5xen/build//.config: No such file or directory egrep: /lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2747.el5xen/build//include/linux/autoconf.h: No such file or directory find: /lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2747.el5xen/build/: No such file or directory make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2747.el5xen/build: No such file or directory. Stop. make: *** [modules] Error 2 the build directory is a symbolic link to /usr/src/kernels.... This directory is missing. What yum command do I execute to get it? THanks, Jerry

Strange output of netstat -a or is it??

Hello, When I do a netstat -ap as root, I get the following line in the output: udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:36489 0.0.0.0:* 31345/named This means that named is listening on port 36489 udp and for the life of me, I can not figure out (including googling for it), what it is... On another host of the exact same versions but different setup, I have something similar.. udp 0 0 *:32768 *:* 2072/named Anyone got a guess?? -ed-

4.92 beta and xen

I have 4.92 installed. I installed xen at installation time. When I reboot it gets hung at xend for some time. Not sure why? It does eventually move on, I'd say for a good minute it stays there. Just an observation? Not sure what can be done.... Jerry

I have been running a local repository on a CentOS4 server. It serves CentOS4 clients (and FC5, FC6, and SuSE10.x if I bother to mention). My current options for exports is (ro,wdelay,insecure,root_squash). The ro and insecure options were added manually and others are default. I understand 'sync' is the default although it is not shown by exportfs -v. I also found this description in the NFS FAQ: "For the Linux implementation of NFS Version 3, using the "async" export option to allow faster writes is no longer necessary. NFS Version 3 explicitly allows a server to reply before writing data to disk, under controlled circumstances. It allows clients and servers to communicate about the disposition of written data so that in the event of a server reboot, a Version 3 client can detect the reboot and resend the data. In summary, be sure all exports on your Linux NFS servers use the "sync" option by setting it explicitly or by upgrading your nfs-utils package to version 1.0.1 or later. If you need fast writes, be sure your clients mount using NFS Version 3. You may also improve write performance by adding the "wdelay" option to your exports." In other words, the default settings (sync and wdelay) seem to be the best choice. Is this generally true? Are there any cases in which use of, for example, async is more desirable? Akemi

Is there a way to get to get past the cga type centos 4 install screen where it says To begin testing the cd media etc etc...... and shows the OK or SKIP selections... ...and get to a "text shell command prompt" and *eject* the cd so I can reboot the machine from remote??? I have a remote console drac connection, yet for once we sent the hired guns home for the weekend and I am a just a tad bit too far away at the moment to travel to it. Centos 4.4 Problems not i586 compatible

I have Centos 4.4 i386 installed an on i686. I tried making a mini-test live cd based on this install that just starts bash but it only works on i686 machines and not i586. I only have i386 glibc and all other packages are i386. I copied all of the necessary .so files. I even manually compiled bash using -march=i386 & -mtune=i386 but it will only run on i686. Can anyone explain why? Thanks!

Need some pointers here. I've got CentOS 4.4, and I want to control my OSX 10.4.9 box via VNC. It connects, and I get a little dot for the mouse cursor, but just a black screen. I can see the mouse controlling the OSX desktop... Please help with a problem that is slowly driving me nuts :-/ *Quick problem* Can I kickstart an install by reading all the files from a single partition on the system and installing onto all the spare space on the same drive? I am using `harddrive --partition=sda1 --dir=/` but it doesn't seem to work!! *Longer version* I have a server that has no CD-ROM and that I would like to install a custom version of CentOS onto. This is supplied as an ISO image. The server is in a datacentre so I can't setup other machines to boot off however a single boot server is available for diagnostics only. So far I have - Netbooted the machine - Wiped all partitions and created a single 800MB partition - Made this ext2 (kickstart seems to need ext2) - Mounted this drive and downloaded the ISO to it - Mounted the ISO as loopback - Copied all the data from the ISO into the disk - Setup extlinux and used the isolinux config - Modified the kickstart file... Changed `cdrom` to `harddrive --partition=sda1 --dir=/` Removed the line `clearpart --all` - Reboot Now, the system boots from disk, vmlinuz and initrd.img both unpack and execute fine! (so the syslinux/extlinux seems to be working great) and pages of system startup scroll past. It seems to then start asking for questions that should be covered by the kickstart file including asking where all the files are on the disk and then showing me the disk with all the files on! :-/ "What partition and directory on that partition hold the CD (iso9660) images" After all of this I feel so close yet so far! Video drivers, bittorrent and Centos 5?

At home I have CentOS 4.4 running on a Compaq Presario with an ATI Radeon 200G video chipset. Naturally, the linux driver support ATI offers are pretty crappy, thus many postings to many web sites on problems and possible resolutions. I forget where, and natually I didn't bookmark it, but there was one web site that provided the exact working solution. From then on, my video support worked flawlessly. Now, with CentOS 5 coming out, what support will there be for this type of card? My installation came from a bittorrent DVD. The problem I have with this method is how trustworthy seeded sites are for the download? If I am downloading 4, 5, or 6 CDs from a .gov, .mil, or .edu site, I feel it will be much more trustworthy. Granted, I could also outright pay for media from the CentOS organization. If someone can convince me that bittorrent is a 100% safe way to retrieve a copy of the OS with no tampering, then I'll feel more comfortable. Otherwise, I will want to completely redo my machine with CentOS 5, from partitioning on up. Thanks for any feedback/insights. Scott

kickstart - how do I specify I20_block driver

Hi, I have alot of kickstart and scripting going on as I provision lots of machines, and every now and then I run into a pesky machine or three that's still got that Adeptec zero-channel RAID card sitting on the board. Normally I like to rip it our and throw something more robust in, but if it's a cache machine or whatever, I leave it in. It makes my kickstart file useless until I ask you, the list, how do I edit the kickstart file to tell the installer to add this driver and use it. If I don't, I get an error that says roughly "no suitable disk devices found to install on". i'm calling kickstart like this (thanks to Joshua-Baker LePain's advice a while back) linux ks=http://192.168.my.webserver/serverx.ks ip=192.168.whatever.ip netmask=255.255.255.248 gateway=192.168.x.1 dns=my.dns.server.ip Is there a section I should edit just before this disks in the kickstart file are called to call and use the i20_block driver, or do I pass it as a parameter at the kickstart command line? -karlski

CentOS-5 beta Virtual Guest Setup Problem

Hi all, Using virt-manager to install a fully virtualized guest of CentOS 4.4 from DVD media fails after reboot at end of anaconda install process. Google has NOT been my friend on this but I know someone else has seen this problem, just no answers yet, and reading the docs has only resulted in more questions than answers (?my problem?). I think that the problem is in getting the vncpasswd for the reboot to display the GU. The qumu-dm*.log file shows this as: xs_read(): vncpasswd get error. /vm/8373baf3-8dd8-8559-19ad-546cf0283b0b/vncpasswd issued domain 1 reboot The xend.log and the virt-manager.log don't seem to be showing me any errors in the process, but then I just may not be interpreting them correctly. My system is a supermicro X7DBE+ with 2 Xeon 5160, 8G RAM and 4 147G SAS drives setup as raid 10. I did set the BIOS to allow virtualization. The CentOS 5 was a clean default install as a server GU with the virtualization option added. I have to admit that at best I only know enough to be dangerous, (that would be on a good day) having come over to linux from another OS and am more at the user level than a sys op, but I am trying to learn. Any help or hints would be appreciated. Mark

Kernel question(s): I/O handling

I have been chasing down the way the inode and page caches are structured and handled, but there is a mystery I have not been able to track down yet. How does the I/O queue that dirty inodes and pages are put into when it's time to flush them out to disk get picked up? Also, where are the sources for the I/O schedulers? I haven't been able to locate them yet either. I know this should not be too hard to locate, but it seems as though there's some magic involved when the inode/page gets put in the i/o queue and then <something happens here> and the i/o is scheduled and, eventually, performed. Consolidating LVM volumes..

Hi, Something I haven't done before is reduce the number of volumes on my server.. Here is my current disk setup.. [root@server1 /]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-RootVol00 15G 1.5G 13G 11% / /dev/md0 190M 42M 139M 24% /boot /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-DataVol00 39G 16G 22G 42% /data none 157M 0 157M 0% /dev/shm /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-HomeVol00 77G 58G 15G 80% /home /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-VarVol00 16G 382M 15G 3% /var Rather than try and reduce the size of the VarVol00 volume to make more unallocated space which I have heard is a little dangerous.. I would like to get rid of the VarVol00 and have the /var directory on the RootVol00 volume.. Then I can allocate some of the free space to HomeVol00 which is filling up.. So how do I do this? Do I simply copy /var to /var2 and then edit the /etc/fstab file to remove the line that mounts VarVol00?? Then at what point and how do I rename /var2 to /var to get it all working as normal again? Should this all be done in "single" mode? As you can see I am really not sure about this procedure so any help or step by step instructions for be great.. Thanks..

Command not running in crontab

Hi, Can anoyone tell me why this command is not executed (or it is without success) from crontab, but works perfectly from the command line ? (yes, i've restarted crontab service) # clean up postmaster 00 30 * * * root /usr/bin/find /var/qmail/maildirs/postmaster(a)telbit.pt/Maildir/new -type f -print0 | xargs -0 -n 50 rm The mind boggles... Updating the DVD ISO howto?

I seem to remember this being addressed before, but I can't find the howto anywhere. I've got a friend heading to another country with VERY limited bandwidth. He'd like me to update the 4.4 DVD to include all of the updated RPMS from updated. Where can I find the scripts to update the meta data on the RPMS and create a new bootable DVD? Thanks! Ben

CentOS 5 Beta Feels Snappier

Hi, Is it me or is CentOS 5 faster than FC6? I just switched and it seems that CentOS 5 loads faster and overall feels snappier. Could Red Hat have optimzed EL more than Fedora?. Just curious. I really like what I see with CentOS 5. The devs have done a great job making a profesisonal looking distro. An of course kudos to Red Hat for all the engineering and for making the SRPMS available.
