system-display-config doesn't run right

This might be a gnome problem, but.... I've noticed that, on occasion (frequently), when I try to look at or modify my display configuration, the Applications->System Settings->Display doesn't come up. It asks for the root password, which I give it, and then nothing. installing perl module in centos/rpmforge vs. cpan methods

Hi, I just used RPMforge package perl-Mail-Sender, and am looking at the perl cpan site for info, anyone got a simple way to determine if the module is working properly? I am trying to use the cpan info, but it's a bit cryptic (as perl is wont to be). -it says to use this: #!/usr/local/bin/perl use ExtUtils::Installed; my $instmod = ExtUtils::Installed->new(); foreach my $module ($instmod->modules()) { my $version = $instmod->version($module) || "???"; print "$module -- $version\n"; } but all I get is: Perl -- 5.8.5 which seems to indicate doing a wget http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/perl-Mail-Sender/perl-Mail-Sender-0.8.13… rpm -ivh perl-Mail-Sender-0.8.13-1.el4.rf.noarch.rpm is either working and thie script above just cant see it, or the module is installed and requires some follow up. Both of these are just theoretical. Any input from the wise listers other than "read all of cpan since you have a million hours free time". perl -MCPAN -e 'install Mail::Sender' simply hangs on the FTP transaction, thus the reason I did this from RPMforge instead. -krb

Changing from NTFS to ext3

I want to convert all my NTFS partitions to ext3 since I'm no longer running Windows, at least on my main machine at home. I'm planning to tar the NTFS partitions to an existing ext3, reformat the partition as ext3 and untar it back. What is the best way to accomplish step two of this - reformatting the partition? I've only done this so far during the installation phase, and that was for partitions I knew I could destroy with impunity. I'm guessing I unmount the drive, <do something magic here> and remount it. It's the magic part I don't know. Thanks. Fun with CentOS and Windows

I installed the memory and the CPU and the motherboard and the new video card all together tonight. CentOS installed very nicely and I'm currently running the CentOS-Plus version, with which I _can_ access my Windows partitions. Well, one of the disks is getting flaky and I'm having trouble with it - of course, that's the one I need the most. Glitches, with which I would be delighted to obtain feedback and/or advice: 1) In the boot screen, it tells me "CPU0 Memory information: single channel, 64-bits." I have 2Gb of DDR2 PC6400 (800MHz) memory - is this a problem, or does it mean something else entirely? (ECS NFORCE4M-A m/b, Phoenix BIOS 6.00PG) 2) While the system is booting up, it tells me: MP-BUG: 8254 timer is not connected to APIC What does this mean and is there a way around it? 3) CentOS does not appear to have the drivers for my video card or monitor. I have an e-GEForce 7100gs card and an Envision en910e monitor (yeah, that old 19" CRT that has been working fine for 3+ years). How can I get more than 800x600 (need 1280x1024 to work properly? And please don't say buy a new monitor - no money for that for a while.... 4) Here's the bad part (sort of) - I can't boot my Windows any more. It comes part way up and reboots, whether I try to run Safe Mode (hahahahahaha) or Crashing (I mean Normal) Mode. The video card is different, and I thought that might be the problem, but it should come up in safe mode no matter what - no video driver loaded. (I also went from a P4 to an Athlon 64 X2 - could that be part/all of it?). What's the best way to convert a whole set of file systems?

I am currently running a Windows XP system at home with around 100+ Mb in use over ~400Mb of NTFS file systems. I am installing CentOS 4.4 on it when I change out the mobo/cpu/mem/video combo I just bought. I want to convert all the file systems to (probably) Reiserfs or maybe ext3, but I need to do them one at a time because I only have enough transfer space to accommodate the largest one, or at least that's my belief. That would mean at least two copies per partition converted, and I have six partitions to convert, from ~14Gb to over 85Gb (in one, only - the rest are 30Gb or smaller). 1) Is there a good way to do whole fs conversions, specifically from NTFS to reiserfs or ext3? 2) Do I even need to do this (i.e., do any of the CentOS/Linux kernels support read AND write to NTFS)? 3) Is there, by any chance, and in-place converter from NTFS to any Linux fs, preferably reiserfs or ext3? Also, the last time I installed CentOS on a system (I've done about six or seven so far) I don't remember seeing reiserfs as one of the supported fs's for configuring during the installation process - am I blind or is this really the case? I like reiserfs primarily because it is really good with many small files, and I have tons of them - around 100k files under 10k. Thanks. mhr

Configuration Help with HA/VirtualIP

I've been bashing my head into a wall the past few days on this. I am trying to setup a Load Balanced MySQL Cluster. I can get the MySQL NDB Clusters working, but when I try to install the HA Load Balancers, I can't get past the step of the shared Virtual IP. I'm basing my sequence on HowToForge Guide written for Debain (http://www.howtoforge.com/loadbalanced_mysql_cluster_debian_p7) I've added my own tweaks and use the appropriate CentOS x64 commands and configurations. I am creating a loopback interface with the following configs: vi /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-lo:0 DEVICE=lo:0 IPADDR=10.98.51.10 NETMASK=255.255.254.0 NETWORK=10.98.50.0 # If you're having problems with gated making 127.0.0.0/8 a martian, # you can change this to something else (255.255.255.255, for example) BROADCAST=10.98.51.255 ONBOOT=yes NAME=loopback The Guide shows this for Debian vi /etc/network/interfaces auto lo:0 iface lo:0 inet static address 192.168.0.105 netmask 255.255.255.255 pre-up sysctl -p > /dev/null I think I am almost there, but just can't place my figure on my error. Status of sky2 NIC lockup bug

Does anyone know if the "sky2 transmitter lockup" bug that was in 4.4 has been resolved in CentOS 5? This bug causes the sky2 NIC driver to lock up when transferring large amounts of data through the NIC. It may sound a bit strange but I had a similar problem with an ASUS mobo with a Via chipset a long time ago and that problem was actually related to the dynamic discovery of memory clocking speeds. For some reason it was negotiating a higher memory clocking speed then the memory supported. What ended up fixing the issue was going into the BIOS and statically assigning the memory clocking speed. Of course the downside to this is that this setting would need to be changed anytime you upgrade your memory some with a different clocking rate. It may not be what you're experiencing but maybe worth a shot. How far into the boot process does your computers reboot again? minor error on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel?highlight=%28HowTos%29 the rpmbuild steps specifies kernel.spec, when in fact the filename is kernel-2.6.spec, at least with 2.6.9-42.0.10.EL this occurs a BUNCH of times on that wiki page... also kernel2.6.9 -> kernel-2.6.9 on the cp command after 'configuring your kernel'

Can't boot to init 3

In order to get more screen than 800x600, since the video card I'm using isn't on the list, and neither is my monitor, I've downloaded the NVIDIA "latest and greatest drivers" from nvidia.com, except it won't install. It refuses to run in X mode (unless I force it to, which it says is not recommended), but wants to run in init level 3. Problem is, I can't get to init level 3. If I run 'init 3' from a root command line, it starts to go down, waits until I type something (anything), then begins heading for init 3 and stops dead right after starting anacron. The only way to revive it is to reboot. If I run 'init 1' from a command line, it goes down to init level 1 just fine, so I fugred 'Great, now init 2' but it stops right after starting the HAL daemon. It echoes keyboard input but does nothing further at all. I have to reboot. It's almost as if it's going to a console that isn't my (only) terminal.... I tried to see how to tell grub to come up at init 3, but I can't find that one either. Help? Please reply both on list AND directly to me, at least if you reply today, because this subscription is currently set for digest (because I get all the inidividual emails at work) - when I get the video set up properly, I'll fix that.... CentOS 5 Beta on a MacBook Pro

FYI, I just installed CentOS 5 beta with the SMP kernel in a VMWare fusion virtual machine on my 2.33 GHz 15 inch MacBook Pro. The installation was flawless. I installed from an NFS share on my network with the ISO images. The vm booted disc one and recognized my 802.11n wireless connection as eth0. The install took about 30 minutes. Everything worked fine... -Joe

After testing the beta of CentOS 5, i was a little surprised to notice that the display manager part of the prefdm file in /etc/X11 was exactly like in CentOS 4 / RHEL4 and previous versions including RH9. it reads like this (added line numbers for reference): 14 # Run preferred X display manager 15 preferred= 16 if [ -f /etc/sysconfig/desktop ]; then 17 . /etc/sysconfig/desktop 18 if [ "$DISPLAYMANAGER" = GNOME ]; then 19 preferred=gdm 20 elif [ "$DISPLAYMANAGER" = KDE ]; then 21 preferred=kdm 22 elif [ "$DISPLAYMANAGER" = XDM ]; then 23 preferred=xdm 24 fi 25 fi Line 17 is no functional command i know of, therefor the choice of which displaymanager (login-screen) to use is decided by the fallback lines later in the script (that starts with gdm). If you're ok with gdm, than there's no need for this to change. Still, it would seem that something is missing there. Ok, I have a challenge - get two services working over a single port. (!) Sometimes it's a web service, sometimes it's a VNC service. Here's what I had in mind: 1) Server is normally a webserver listening on port 80, and normally has the following rules active: # iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT # iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE 2) Server hosts a special PHP script, that when called correctly, sets rules like # iptables -I PREROUTING -p tcp -s $REMOTE --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination $FWIP:$FWPORT # iptables -I FORWARD -p tcp -s $REMOTE --dport 80 -j ACCEPT The *next* tcp connection from their computer to the webserver will get NAT'd to service $FWIP:$FWPORT. But I want this rule cleared out as soon as the connection is made with the latter altered rules. Is there a way to write a rule or set of rules that, when activated, then delete themselves? The "ESTABLISHED,RELATED" rule should keep the connection alive even after the latter rules are killed, right? Is this possible? Am I just out in left field?

CentOS-4.3 Install Fails

I'm using the same CD's that I've used to install CentOS on my other systems. After the first failure I had the installation verify the install media just in case. It passed. I've tried the default install (used for all previous installs) and the i586 option (after googling). They both fail in the same way. I notice that the OO that comes with CentOS 4.4 is version 1.1.5, which is fairly ancient. Are there any plans to update this for OO 2.2, or 2.1, or 2.0? Or is this a RH thing exclusively? In which case is CentOS Plus likely to get a more recent version? OO 2.0 is way better.... I partitioned the new drive and created the filesystems. I then mounted them one by one and copied the information over. There is a bad inode that caused 'dump' to crash, so I used 'rsync -a' to make the copy instead. When I tried to do the 'chroot' and 'grub-install', grub complained that it didn't have a device file (which it didn't, /dev/ was empty). So I copied the '/dev/hda*' files from the rescue environment to the destination hard drive and tried again. This time, the 'grub-install' ran fine. Now the problem is that when I try to boot, I get the world's worst error message: "GRUB GRUB GRUB...". I read that this can be fixed by setting your bios to manual rather than auto for the hard drives, but that didn't work for me. What else can I do? I think everything is copied to the new drive, I just need to convince it to boot. -- Bowie

CentOS samba MS Word corruption

We're using CentOS samba for about 20 workstations, mostly XP, some 2000 and two win98. Samba shares a data directory with Word, Excel and Access documents/db's. Also Exact for Dos is running from this share (executable and data). The users experience a long delay every morning opening the first Word document (Word 97, Word 2000). This could take 10 minutes or so. If they close Windows before the document is loaded and open it later on the document is corrupted. If they go for a cup of coffee in the meantime everything is fine. After the first document the rest of them reportedly has no problems (allthough I doubt this). Excel, Access and Explorer have no problems ! There is still an older Windows 2000 server running as Wins server which is to be replaced by the CentOS server. I find these entries (below) in /var/log/messages which point to locking problems. By Googling I found reports from people who think the stock samba release RedHAt is broken with repect to locking and advice to upgrade to latest version. I would love to here your experiences and thoughts on this cause this gives me the creeps as you can imagine. Evolution Woes

Somewhat OT as this may not be CentOS/EL-specific. I am seeking help in trying to determine why the combination of my work e-mail server and evolution is usually, but not always, giving the error Error verifying signature Cannot verify message signature: Incorrect message format on signed messages (such as those from Ralph Angenendt and Johnny Hughes), and refusing to display them; while the same messages are readable with a webmail interface, in the list archives, or when they go to my home address that is also subscribed to some of the same lists (same version of evolution at home and work). This problem only started last week and the origin is probably related to infrastructure upgrades on the mail server, over which I have no control. Google has not come through on this one . Many of the results seem to lead to sources or change-logs containing the strings, not to similar problem reports of fixes. Can't find anything relevant in bugzilla.gnome.org, bugzilla.ximian.com, bugzilla.redhat.com, or bugs.centos.org. Have searched without success in the evolution docs and on-line for a way to turn off the checks in evolution so the message will display. Has anyone else seen this behavior? Anyone have a fix or work-around? Thanks, Phil

MeetingMaker 7.5 on CentOS 4 under Wine?

Has anyone gotten MeetingMaker 7.5 to work right in wine? The app starts, but none of the text shows up at all. I did add the msttcorefonts-1.3-4.noarch.rpm, so I could see the text in Wine Config. I even copied all of the fonts from my WinXPSP2 box to the ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts directory. What did I miss? How to enable download via web browser with vsftpd?

HI , I setup vsftp yesterday as a local user only mode. No anonymous was enabled. I set up this vsftpd on my machine running CentOS 4.4. its ip is 192.168.101.25. so when I login as ftp://192.168.101.25/ via web browser, I am promted the username as password. After inputing username and password, I can login successfully. Then I can download everything as usual. But I can not upload any data ? Why is that ? How to enable it via web browser? But, If I use command line mode, I can do both downloading (mget) and uploading (mput). pls see below. CentOS 5 Beta Dual Boot Problem

To test CentOS 5, I loaded from DVD adding it to a system at home running Fedora Core 7 T2. Partition Layout is: /dev/hda1 - / for the RH7T2 system /dev/hda2 - /home /dev/hda3 - swap /dev/hda4 - extended /dev/hda5 - / for CentOS 5 The system loaded cleanly and gave me the opportunity to tell grub about the other system. CentOS boots fine. Grub Stage 2 will show me both systems. CentOS and Atheros

What's the easiest path to having my Atheros wireless cards supported, particularly in C5? In the past, I've chosen to download source and build my own, but that's become a little tiresome. Default 4.4 kernel and NTFS?

I just installed Centos 4.4 and performed a Yum update to freshen all out-of-date files. I also have two IDE drives that are NTFS partitioned, but noticed they are not seen by the kernel. I visit /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-42.EL-i686 and copy the Makefile.bak to Makefile and run make xconfig. Reviewing the supported filesystems, ntfs is not selected. Any reason why not? What is the easiest and safest way to get ntfs support? I could just download and compile the latest kernel, but there must be an easier, and just as safe, method for installing one simple option. Hey guys, I have a little problem. i'm running a CentOS 4.4 (Final) (Linux 2.6.9-42.0.10.EL) box. So, i installed SASacct (http://rousse.pm.org/sasacct/) for accouting the traffic of my hosts. But it dont make the graphics/images of utilization. The libs, rrdtool, perl are all installed. I just tested with rpm based rrdtool and Tarball, but no success. Can't create users and groups

Hi, From the release notes i can read : "Note that the minimum RAM required to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.92 has been raised to 1GB; the recommended RAM is 2GB. If a machine has less than 1GB RAM, the installation process may hang." Is it a joke/mistake ? :-O 1GB !!! I tested installation process with 256M / Celeron 600, seems to work ...) -- Martin

What is the port of Bandwidthd ?

Hi, I am running Bandwidthd on CentOS 4.4. (http://bandwidthd.sourceforge.net) Box running Bandwidthd network monitoring tool is behind a Firewall (iptables). My firewall has 3 network cards. One card has a real ip (live ip). That is eth0 - pls assume it is 1.2.3.4 . Pls assume router is 1.2.3.5. eth1 is for DMZ. Its ip is 192.168.100.3 eth2 is LAN . its ip is 192.168.101.254. Box running Bandwidthd network monitoring tool is behind this LAN. Its ip is 192.168.101.35 . its gateway is ip address of firewall that is 192.168.101.254. It can go internet. That is the way I have set up my firewall. But, It can not graph as expected. For examples, if I ping from my pc to router, It does not show ICMP traffic. I downloaded a 38 mb file to my pc. It also does not show in bandwidthd graph. Why is that? What is the port that bandwidthd runs on? Here is my file, Pls have a lokk at it. What is cached swap?

Isn't cached swap somewhat an oxymoron? Why cache virtual? Am I misunderstanding this line from top? C5 beta version of Evolution always send mail in HTML

People testing the CentOS 5 (4.92) public beta should be aware of the Evolution bug that sends all mail in HTML format regardless of the user's selection: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=218607 http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1759 The upstream EL5 evolution-2.8.0-33.el5 fixes this problem and several others, so the C5 fix should be forthcoming soon. tcpdump?

Did the latest Centos4.x kernel break the ability to tcpdump with any amount of traffic? Machines that used to be able to keep up now show a few packets and stop - if you hit ^C they take a minute or so to do anything, then show something like: 54 packets captured 18188 packets received by filter 18070 packets dropped by kernel Before recent updates I almost never saw packets 'dropped by kernel'. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

CentOS 5 Beta dual boot with FC7T2 (unsatisfying)

To test CentOS 5, I loaded from DVD adding it to a system at home running Fedora Core 7 T2. Partition Layout is: /dev/hda1 - / for the RH7T2 system /dev/hda2 - /home /dev/hda3 - swap /dev/hda4 - extended /dev/hda5 - / for CentOS 5 The system loaded cleanly and gave me the opportunity to tell grub about the other system. CentOS boots fine. Grub Stage 2 will show me both systems. However, If I choose the FC7T2 system I get the following output: Booting 'FC7T2' rootnoverify(hd0,0) chainloader +1 Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format Any clues on how to fix this? php still without mysql installing php-mysql

Am using php 5.1.6 and mysql 5.0.27 I installed php-mysql 5.1.6 from the centos repositories, I then restarted the server and on running phpinfo it still shows that mysql is not configured with php (--without-mysql), what might be wrong. The same happened after I installed php-gd too

Monitoring pkg to monitor router

Hi, I have a router which is maintained by our ISP. They have given us to monitor it by using MRTG. It is okay. But it only shows incoming and outgoing traffice. It does not say wherther is TCP or UDP or ICMP. It just shows in and out.That's it. But, I want to monitor this router ? Can you tell me a good pkg for it ? router has a snmp commiunity password . Ido not know it. My ISP does not give it either. Can you help me accoring to my condition soon? -- Thank you Indunil Jayasooriya
