Kickstart with all the latest updates?

Currently, I kickstart my machines over http to install CentOS 4.4 and then in a script called from %post do a "yum -y update" to install all the latest updates. Is there a way to set up the kickstart server so that I can do this all in one step? In other words, is there a "supported" way to roll in all the updates into the kickstart server? In case it matters, I set up the kickstart server by copying the contents of all CentOS 4.4 CDs (well, from the ISO images actually) into one directory, and then configuring the kickstart file to point to that URL (via http). Help with mail and attachments

I use postfix mail server with Maildir. I would like the system to save automaticaly content only of those mails which contain a certain word into the file in /home/userdir/. I would also like to save *.pdf and other attachements to directory. Looking forward for your help Best regards Blaž

Try this: \cp from to IIRC, cp is an alias that translates to cp -i, I believe rm and mv are the same. Entering the leading \ overrides the alias. Hope that helps. CentOS 4.4 not seeing all RAM

Hi Everyone, My server is only seeing 4.8 GB out of 6 GB available. I don't know why. I have a CentOS 4.4 x86_64 server running on a Tyan s2895 with 6 GB of RAM (two 1 GB sticks and 2 2 GB sticks). I upgraded the RAM, powered up the server, and when CentOS was finished booting, checked the available RAM with free. This is what it's reporting: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 4809064 4769492 39572 0 197156 3127704 -/+ buffers/cache: 1444632 3364432 Swap: 2064376 176 2064200 The BIOS sees all of the RAM. In fact, it looks to me like the kernel knows 6 GB is available. But, it is only using 4.8 GB because I see this in dmesg: Memory: 4808464k/6291456k available (2106k kernel code, 0k reserved, 1299k data, 196k init) What happened to the other 1 GB+ of RAM? BTW, the server isn't running all the newest updates, but it is running the latest CentOS 4 kernel (2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp). Sending traffic through Secondary IP Address

I have set up a secondary IP address in the same network as my primary. So eth0: 192.168.100.29 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0:0 192.168.100.45 netmask 255.255.255.0 And indeed when I invoke an apache instance that listens on the secondary IP address/interface it works, and it also makes it outside the LAN since the default gateway is defined in the routing tables for 192.168.100.0/24. But I'd like to be able to send out some sort of broadcast on the network from that secondary interface so that the arp tables on various devices on the network get updated. How would I, say, use nmap to do something like that? Is there a generic way to force a particular program to use a secondary IP address instead of the default primary? Obviously, something like BIND or Apache httpd has that hardcoded in so that you can tell them to use secondaries via their configuration files. But how about those programs that don't? === Al

Virtualisation

I'm building a new server at home to handle most of my internal requirements (mail, news, dns, dhcp, backups being the biggies). I also want it to host a couple of virtual servers which are allowed incoming connections from the internet (mail gateway, web server, ssh server); these are virtual so if a hacker _can_ break in then they're limited as to what they can see. At present the virtual machines are vserver instances on an old FC2 box. I'm wondering what people recommend for virtual servers these days? CentOS 4 with a vserver kernel? Wait for CentOS 5 and use Xen? VMware? (Vmware is the heavy solution, but it does mean I could host a windows session if I wanted to). Or Solaris 10 and zones? Any thoughts? -- rgds Stephen

Hi, I've installed a mail server using CentOS 4.4 Now, if i reboot the server remotely by ssh, when it cames up, i have no network. The interface is up and everything looks pretty fine. But i can't even ping other machines in the same intranet. If i reboot it locally at the console, the network cames just fine. Never seen nothing like this. The mind boggles :( Any ideas ? CentOS 4.4 lvm and drbd 0.8?

I'm running CentOS 4.4 and drbd 0.7 with ext3 filesystems on the drbd device. I'm very interested in moving to drbd 0.8 and pulling my all of my drbd devices into one lvm for greater flexibility in filesystems. I've seen some notes on doing this but wonder if anyone on this list has a cookbook for doing this. Also noted that on the drbd site the only packages they have are set up for the 2.6.9-34.106 kernel. Any thoughts on when there might be a drbd .8 package for the current kernel? Hi, has somebody already succeeded in creating a php-4.4 rpm under centos-4.4? php version 4.3.9 compiles perfectly, but taking the 4.3.9 spec and replacing the source tar.gz (and omitting the patches) doesn't work at all. I could provide you with details about compile errors, but I think I should check the availability of a 4.4 package before trashing you with details. This is part of my documentation for VNC under RHEL-4. All of the configuration file changes below were originally formatted as "diff -u" patches. Email may have mangled them, so beware. I assume standard gnome desktop packages have been installed, if you want another desktop manager you'll have to figure out how to configure that yourself. Ethernet not working

I have just installed CentOS 4.4 and can't get the ethernet to work Ethernet is built into the motherboard: Marrvell Technology Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controler (reported by Network Configuration) It shows the device is active. using static address /etc/resolv.conf is setup correctly The problem is that I can not talk to anything outside the system. This has worked with Mandriva, Fedora, SuSe and gentoo. Mike

Hi, I think my problem is related to the way i make my RPMs (i'm newbie at this). Two things: 1) the generated RPMs are only 1,5 kb size. That's inpossible. 2) The rpmbuild -ba zbr.spec indeed installs the software in the building stage. That's odd, isn't it ? I'm just curious if Skype will work on CentOS? They have all kinds of FC rpms but which one to install? I'm running CentOS 4.4 I tried the Live CD just to test and it didn't want to find my sound card (Tried the sound card detection on the CD). The funny thing is that I can just access the file by cat: cat script/xw_functions.ample works fine (I get the content of the file). To solve it for this shell I do this: [thba@vink layout]$ cd [thba@vink ~]$ cd - /home/thba/workarea/colibri/design/ana/layout [thba@vink layout]$ nc script/xw_functions.ample And it is fine again. This is a home nfs share mounted with these options: arend:/export/home /home nfs proto=tcp,nfsvers=3,bg,defaults 0 0 Both on the NFS server as on this client I see any errors or warning in any log. Swap Considerations

I am considering installing CentOS 4.4, and am interested in how best to set up. I have been using FC2 and helping administer a Debian machine for a few years, but do not consider myself a Linux guru. My current set up uses a /swap partition which is 2x my memory size mem = 256 MB $ sudo /sbin/fdisk -l /dev/hda6 76506 77545 524128+ 82 Linux swap I'm interested in the use of a file for swap, as I hear that there is now no speed penalty for that. I use ext3 for my partitions. I'm also interested in whether it be reasonable/desirable to make /home, /tmp, and /var be on a separate partition. I have heard arguments on both sides, some claiming that with ext3 the system won't become unbootable because of /tmp filling up. Anyone care to weigh in? Build a special RPM

Hi, I want to build a single RPM that has more than one software in it and a different name from them. Let's imagine for the sake of example that i want to make an RPM called databases.rpm that installs both MySQL and Postgres. How can i do this with a single spec file ? kernel issues

I just had to revert from the latest kernel back to .08 due to panics. i used rpm to remove the .10 kernel. However i know can't get the smp version of the .10 kernel to install via yum. How memory-intensive is VMWare workstation? I have a P4 3.0GHz with 1/2Gb of memory at home - is VMWare going to be a total drag on the system or is it lightweight enough that I can still run (as opposed to walk or crawl)? I run VMWW at work, but that's a Pentium-D with 2Gb of RAM, and top shows vmware using 199m virt, 1.1g res and 1.1g shr - not sure what that means (but it looks like bad news for the home situation...). That number is the amount of physical memory that is being used by cache buffers for your filesystems. It has nothing to do with swap. Try this trick: Run top and note the value of 'cached' run 'dd if=/dev/zero of=~/test bs=1M count=256' Run top again and see that 'cached' has grown by 256M remove the file ~/test Run top again and see that the value of 'cached' has dropped by 256M With that said, there is a 'SwapCached' value reported in /proc/meminfo that represents the amount of swap space used by pages that are also in physical mem (like if something was swapped out and then back in). The VMM doesn't clear those swap pages unless they are needed or the process terminates. Cheers, -chris --- C. hi gang! I'm interested in setting up incoming PPP on a system at work that has a fresh (not upgrade) Centos 4.4 on it. All the documentation I've found for that shows using mgetty to do it, and seems pretty straightforward. However, that machine doesn't have a binary named mgetty anywhere. It does have a mgetty-sendfax RPM installed, but it does not provide a binary named mgetty. "yum -list available | grep -y getty" shows no additional packages I could use to obtain it. so, how does one set up incoming PPP on Centos 4.4? (I've searched the RH knowledgebase and all I found there that came close was a very nice document on doing it on RHEL 3, which shows how to do it with mgetty. Catch 22.) In a CentOS server I do the next to make the daily backups: tar cfv - dir_data/ | openssl enc -e -salt -aes256 -pass pass:$PASSWORD -out backup_file.bin So I get an well-encrypted and tared file. If I want to decrypt and the file is easy in Unix/Linux environment: openssl enc -d -aes256 -in backup_file.bin | tar xfv - -C dir_what_you_want/ But the problem I currently have is I don't know how to make it in Win environment. ?¿?

Storage/SCSI Error on our CentOS server

Hi, Currently we are running CentOS 4.x on a 2-way Opteron machine. This machine, through a SCSI host adapter (Adaptec), is connected to a 2TB storage unit (an external RAID-5 disk array) Until our recent unintentional power trip, everything was fine and smooth. We have been experiencing complication accessing the storage ( it could be either intermittent filesystem error, partition could not be mounted in read-write mode, unacceptable writing speed, etc ), especially when we start to 'write' on the storage. After a few check, we are suspecting either : 1) the storage unit (but the storage control panel did not report any disk/raidset failure) is failing or, 2) the SCSI host adapter is failing, or 3) the filesystem itself is corrupted (we did 'fsck.ext3 -v -f' but it turned out it did not find any errors) ..but we are not sure which one.We did received 'messages' which we never experience previously in our 'dmesg' . (please refer below) Based on the above info and the below 'dmesg' output, we'd appreciate if somebody could share and help us to identify what actually went wrong and how could fix it (if possible)? Upgraded BackupPC (3.0.0) in the Testing Repository

There is an upgraded BackupPC in the testing repository. It is version 3.0.0, which was released in January. The setup differences between version 2.1.2 and this version is that some file directories have shifted locations: 1. /var/lib/backuppc/conf is now instead /etc/BackupPC/ 2. /var/lib/backuppc/log is now /var/log/BackupPC =============================== If you are upgrading ... you _CAN_NOT_ just copy your old config.pl config file into /etc/BackupPC can continue on ... you need to migrate in any changes that you made to original file to this config.pl file as there are updated options in the new file. How is the best way to do that ... you did save a copy of the original file prior to changing it ... right :P If not ... here is what I did: ----commands---- cd /tmp mkdir backuppc cd backuppc wget http://dev.centos.org/centos/4/testing/i386/RPMS/backuppc-2.1.2-3.c4.centos… rpm2cpio backuppc-2.1.2-3.c4.centos4.i386.rpm | cpio -idv ----end commands----- You should be in /tmp/backuppc and you should see all the files (extracted) from the original RPM in there ... inside the /tmp/backuppc/var/lib/backuppc/conf/ should be an original config.pl file. You can use that file to create a diff file that you can read to make changes to the new config.pl file. here is what I did prior to upgrade: ----commands---- cd /var/lib/backkuppc/ cp -a conf conf.bak cp -a logs logs.bak cd conf.bak cp /tmp/backuppc/var/lib/backuppc/conf/config.pl config.pl.orig diff config.pl.orig config.pl > config.pl.diff ----end commands---- Now you are ready to upgrade ... you will need to enable the testing repo to do the upgrade (or download the files manually and install manually via RPM). How to do the upgrade via yum: Put the testing repo file into /etc/yum.repos.d/ : http://dev.centos.org/centos/4/CentOS-Testing.repo (the file is disabled by default) Once you have the file in place, use this command: ----commands---- yum --enablerepo=c4-testing upgrade backuppc perl-Compress-Zlib perl-File-RsyncP perl-Time-modules perl-XML-RSS ----end commands---- (that command in all on one line if it wraps in your mail client) You can use that diff file from above to manually add new changes to the /etc/BackupPC/config.pl file after upgrade. DVD rom questions

I'm running CentOS 3 and have just installed a Liteon lightscribe DVD/CD unit. I firstly realized I didn't know exactly how to mount it, as /dev/dvd didn't exist, I didn't want to generate anything if it already existed, and I didn't want to mess up my cdrom unit that works just fine. I mounted the device though the X window just to see how it might mount, and find that it mounts /dev/cdrom1 on /mnt/cdrom1, regardless of what type media is in the drive. Does this sound proper? Should I mknod(?) something for the /dev/dvd device and if so, what should be the parms? I then tried to find a movie viewer on the machine, and only found mplayer. I couldn't get it to work properly due to the configuration options (not a very powerful machine). What does anyone use for a DVD viewer? And lastly, what are recommendations for implementing the lightscribe functions that exist on the drive? Any help is very graciously appreciated. Hi, I had this hard time installing a server with RAID 1 by software. I always got an error from GRUB and no booting. So, i've installed CentOS 4.4 normally in only one disk. Well after your advice I thought I better had take a look at FreeNX. 10 minutes later, all up and running and I agree, it is a lot nicer solution. ptyxx ports

With the 2.6 kernels we have lost the ability to use ptyxx and ttyxx for the installation of various ports. I am thinking of attaching a modem etc to an axip or other similar port and for that I always used ptyxx/ttyxx to do this. SMP on a HP DL-320 G2

Hi gang! At work I have a DL320 G2 machine I use as my desktop (I know, weird!...). Back when I ran RHEL WS 2.1 on it, it always ran a SMP kernel because it has a HypterThread capable processor. When I installed (fresh from scratch) Centos 4.4 on it a while back, though, Centos installed only the UP kernel. I've looked in the BIOS for settings to enable/disable HT support and I don't see anything. I've force-installed the SMP kernel and when I boot it it doesn't seem to think there's anything thre but a normal UP CPU. Should it not show two CPUs in top, and in suitable places in /proc like the earlier OS did? (at least when running a SMP kernel) Ideas welcome. Help with XDMCP over SSH

I am trying to get XDMCP working over SSH on CentOS 4.4 from a windoze box running Cygwin/Putty I have set Enable=true in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf restarted the X server, logged in with Putty and X11 forwarding enabled. I then try to start the Xserver with the following commands # gdmXnestchooser localhost or # Xnest :1 -query localhost Both commands will successfully display a X window and show the X mouse pointer but not the chooser. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks Dean
