I need a terminal program, such as minicom, which I see is not part of my Strongbolt install of CentOS+BQ loaded on a RaQ 4 system. Does anyone know if a standard rpm for minicom should work or where to get a package that will provide minicom or other terminal program? Or, perhaps there is another terminal program installed in my system that I can look for? -- Robert

Help needed to pinpoint problem uebimiau+apache+centos 4.4

Hi, I need some guidance to pinpoint a potential problem and I'm not sure where is the problem. I have a setup with: centos 4.4 dvd on i386 mailscanner uebimiau (webmail) 2.7.10 httpd-2.0.52-22.ent.centos4 httpd-suexec-2.0.52-22.ent.centos4 dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1 The thing is that 3 of my 45 users complained that from the webmail the address book and the sent items are missing. Cheking those accounts in the webmail, I see that the address book and the sent mails dissapeared. this installation is 6 months old and we never had a glitch and I haven't upgraded anything. Build RPM packages with SELinux policy

Hi, I want to build an RPM package which contains an custom SELinux policy for the daemon. I know that there is a new, more modularized SELinux architecture in FC5 and later (which makes this probably much easier) but I need to support RHEL 4/CentOS, too. I know how to use audit2allow to do some minor modifications but I don't know currently how to build RPM packages which ship a new SELinux policy without requiring the SELinux source modules (e.g. selinux-policy-targeted-sources) on RHEL 4 at install time. Any pointers? Ideas welcome. fs

Hi i need to install php when i download and install the cacti it say that and i can not find any pure php rpm but it is an php-excel and so on, what php should i use ? the yum command do noit find any php to update since i have php installed than it complains that it needs php-pear and i am in the same situation and i have several to choose among ..., php-ldap is missing ... Freeing pv space for snapshots

After upgrading my HD, I am now wishing I left some space for doing snapshots. Is there a way to free up some space so I can get some free PE? GRUB CD errors on CentOS 4

Background: I am in the habit of making bootable GRUB CDs with menus and copies of working kernels and initrds, particularly for multiple-boot testing machines with multiple distros and/or the Redmond OS. This has helped pull my fat out of the fire more than once when a system was rendered unbootable by hardware changes, or when Bill Gates decided the MBR should be taken over. This generally works well, and I find it easier than using rescue CDs or live distros to recover. If the system does not boot immediately from the CD, the GRUB shell usually provides enough capability to debug the boot problems and get the system back up. Recently I have encountered problems on a couple of CentOS machines that seems to be related to GRUB bug #14758: http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?func=detailitem&item_id=14758 The symptom is that after booting from the CD and selecting a menu entry, GRUB throws "Error 25: Disk read error" on attempts to boot. Booting can be done manually from the GRUB shell command prompt, or by interactively editing the GRUB menu entries and explicitly specifying the GRUB device in the path on the kernel and initrd lines. For example, the following GRUB stanza in (cd)/boot/grub/grub.conf title CentOS CD sdc (2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp) root (cd) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp.img produces the error 25 with CentOS grub-0.95-3.5, but using the interactive GRUB "e" command to make it look like kernel (cd)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet initrd (cd)/boot/initrd-2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp.img works. Similar results occur using [for example] (hd2,0) in place of (cd) from the same GRUB CD. Using /usr/share/grub/i386-redhat/stage2_eltorito from an FC6 machine as the boot record for the CD fixes the problem. [See below. I also copied FC6 /boot/grub/*stage* to iso/boot/grub for good measure.] The FC6 grub-0.97-13.src.rpm builds on CentOS 4 and provides a work-around for this problem. Might be a candidate for the centosplus repo. Can't find anything on this in EL4 bugzilla or the CentOS site/lists. I have not filed a RH BZ entry as I don't have an Enterprise Linux system on which to verify the bug. It seems to be only intermittently reproducible on CentOS and appears to be specific to the hardware and/or the details of grub.conf. The conditions under which I have seen it involved machines that had both CD/DVD and CD-RW/DVD-RW drives as well as using a splashimage from the hard disk [i.e. splashimage=(hd2,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz as opposed to splashimage=(cd)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz]. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has seen this problem and can document the conditions to reproduce it. Phil ********************************************************************** For reference by those who may want to create a GRUB CD, I use a one-line script called mkgrubiso (below) that expects to find an iso directory in the current directory containing a modified copy of the /boot directory tree plus the file /usr/share/grub/i386-redhat/stage2_eltorito. The docs found by "info grub" may be a bit misleading/incorrect/incomplete. The procedure goes like this: Save mkgrubiso to root's ~/bin directory and make it executable. # chmod +x ~/bin/mkgrubiso In a directory of your choice: # mkdir iso # cp -a /boot iso # cp /usr/share/grub/i386-redhat/stage2_eltorito iso/boot/grub Edit iso/boot/grub/grub.conf using the grub.conf below as a model. Can have stanzas that use vmlinuz/initrd images on the hard disk directly, as well as loading the kernel from the CD. In the directory containing iso/ do: # mkgrubiso Burn the resulting grub.iso image to a CD-R/CD-RW. Hi all, Recently I've suffered a problem with my SMTP service provider. It seems the SMTP server allows open relay, so my account is lockdown by CentOS list policy. Because of that I desubscribe my last account and re-subscribe in CentOS list with the present gmail account. I can send any messages in the list, but the curious problem is I don't see my own messages ¿?¿? tftp times out

tftp keeps timing out when I try to transfer files. I intend to use tftp with G4U to clone a standard workstation. I am testing it between two Dell poweredge servers running CentOS 4.3. "chkconfig --list |grep tftp" shows tftp up and running on both boxes. When connected "tftp>status" shows it is talking to the other box "tptp>trace" shows "sent WRQ <file=slavelit, mode=netascii>" and ends with Transfer timed out. I have tftp is being run under xinetd. I have modified /etc/xinetd.d/tftpd as follows: server_args -p -c -U 002 -u install -s /tster I have setup a user install, set read/write privileges on /tster which is owned by install Not sure what else I need to do to get this working, any suggestions would be appreciated Mark Snyder JMK Computerized TDIS Urbana, IL 61802

zip alternative?

Hi, Recently I've got several errors in one of my backups systems. The backup system uses basic tools: rsync, mysqldump, and zip and have worked fine until a few days ago. The zip command shows an error like this: size limit exceeded. So I've found out an alernative : p7zip. It seems to has all the needed features: * available package (in Dag's repo) * 64 bits for size (http://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=3031109) * support several compression format ¿What do you know about this tool? What are the pros and cons of disabling prelinking in CentOS 4? From what I understand, prelinking is ment to be performance improvement (faster loading time for binaries). I can see some potential benefit on workstations where many different processes are started frequently. But how big is that benefit in real life? Would I slow down things noticably if there is no prelinking? Is there any benefit at all of having prelinking on a server box that runs couple of daemons which are started only at boot time, and then they either use threads or fork themself to handle requests? In either case, such processes are fully (or at least mostly) linked at boot time. For example servers running stuff like Sendmail or Postfix, Dovecot or Cyrus-IMAPD, Squid, MySQL, LDAP and such.

CentOS 4.4 e1000 and wire-speed

Currently I'm running CentOS 4.4 on a Dell Poweredge 850 with an Intel Pro/1000 Quad-port adapter. I seem to be able to only achieve 80% utilization on the adapter, while on the same box running Fedora Core 5 I was able to reach 99% utilization. I am using iSCSI Enterprise Target as my application and I am using the nullio feature, it just discards any write and sends back random data for any read, for my bandwidth test. The IO pattern I use is 1MB block sequentials. Is there something in the OS that is throttling the bandwidth as it seems to be capped at 80%. I have selinux and iptables disabled, and I have tuned the TCP/IP stack to mimic the settings under 2.6.17, except bumped up the default IP send/receiver buffer size for improved UDP transmission over 1Gbps. The CPU is a P4 Dual Core 3GHz, not top of the line but adequate for my needs (strictly block io). Redhat 5 delayed until march, Centos april then?

Hi, like (I'm guessing) alot of other folks, we were eager for the new release of CentOS/RedHat to support some of the newer intel technology (965 chipset mostly (ich8?)) I read today that Redhat 5 has been delayed until March of 2007, which would presumably put the release of CentOS 5 sometime in April. Does the CentOS developer team have any intention of releasing (possibly a new version of CentOS 4) which would allow us to use these new chipsets? Mainly the S5000 Server series and the 965 desktop series. logrotate: how to email logs with mutt?

Hello, next week I'll install logrotate on a centos 4.4 server via yum. The man page says that the default mail command is /bin/mail -s, but there is no such binary on Centos. I do have mutt installed, however, so I would like to use it. Ideally, I would like to have logrotate send logs with mutt as attachments like this: mutt me(a)home.account -a compressed_log_file -s "here are your log files" ie send the log as attachment, not email body. But the logrotate man page says: --mail <command> Tells logrotate which command to use when mailing logs. This command should accept two arguments: 1) the subject of the message, and 2) the recipient. The command must then read a message on standard input and mail it to the recipient. so I have not clear how to make it use mutt as I want. Is it OK to say --mail 'mutt me(a)home.account -a compressed_log_file -s "here are your log files"' or will logrotate send the log in the email _body_? I will check myself the first time logrotate runs, but I thought it would be nice to know if others are already usign mutt with logrotate and document here on the list the whole setup. Thanks, M.

Hi , I have a network to reach which is 192.168.2.0/24. It is a branch of the company. I have currently added a route to that network via one gateway ( 192.168.0.254) in following way. ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 via 192.168.0.254 Now, We got another gateway which is 192.168.0.250. Now I want to add a route to the same network which is 192.168.2.0/24 via this gateway (192.168.0.250) as well. Then I will have 2 paths to the same network. One path should be primary and the other path should be backup. everything should go via primary path. if the primary path goes down, the backup path should be active. That is the purpose of doing this. Pls let me know whether it is possible or not? if possible, How can I achieve this goal. -- Thank you Indunil Jayasooriya

But you will need a routing daemon running to use it. Another possibility would be to have a script run every 5 minutes in cron that pings the first gateway, and if the ping fails, change the route. It would also need logic to fix the first route when the primary gateway starts answering pings again. -- MailScanner is like deodorant... The routers will than discover which paths to every of the networks you have exist and will dynamically change routing rules (instead of using static set of rules) as the network connections go up and down. In the way you requested in your question. It might be an overkill for simple network. But if your network becomes more complex in the future, you'll have infrastructure to handle it. Another advantage of using standard routing protocol is that they tend to be platform independent. You want to replace that Cisco router with Linux router or Linux router with Cisco router. Then , in my case, is the following coomad is right? ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 scope global nexthop via 192.168.0.254 dev eth0 weight 1 nexthop via 192.168.0.250 dev eth0 weight 100 I guess with the above command that traffc will flow via primary, when it fails , traffic will flow via secondary. CentOS 4.5 and CentOS 5.0 News

Hi, I use CentOS as a firewall/proxy/webserver/fileserver in my small network. As the small-spec machine with CentOS is heavily loaded/used I can't afford downtime. 20 GB, pentium II with only 128 MB RAM. However I want to know the news on 4.5 is it due soon? Can I gain more by running CentOS 3.x range on such an old machine like mine? Will CentOS 5.0 mean you need a minimum of 512 RAM? What is the latest on this? How to change NIC alias?

Hello all. I'm installing CentOS 4.4 over a PC with 3 ethernet cards, one onboard (gigabit) and the another two discrete PCI. During installation I have no choice to control who will be eth0, eth1 and eth2, but I need that eth0 be the onboard ethernet. In the end of the installation, it turned out to be one of the discrete ethernet eth0. I need to change that alias, so that the actual eth0 become eth1 and vice versa. Thanks a lot

I haven't bothered to play with apcupsd just because I don't need to worry about my power where my boxes live, but on the software note, I tend to find far more usefull to have linux software do something intelligent like send me an email when there's a problem so I can just forward that to my cell phone, and end up notified and able to react wherever I happen to be. I don't even see popups on the screen of my workstation, much less anything I might need a UPS on. Why would I want windows software behavior under Linux? Peter

3ware 9650SE success

I had posted a question recently on this list regarding the new series of cards from 3ware, and wanted to follow up with some real-world results. My test motherboard was an Intel D945GTPLKR (a desktop board). I was able to use the motherboard video and plug the 3ware card into the PCIe x16 slot. The card I was testing with (16ML) is a PCIe x8 card. Hardware-wise, everything worked without a hitch. Kinda cool to be able to get high bus performance out of a desktop motherboard. I guess we all can thank the gamers for that. The driver in the currently-shipping CentOS kernel (2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp) didn't know what to do with the card. However, the driver from the 3ware web site (9.4.0.1) worked fine, and was straightforward to build and load. As typical, older versions of the cli don't work with the newer driver; I had to download the new version of the cli also. Performance-wise, the new card seems ok. The tests I ran were on a pair of striped desktop drives, so I wasn't looking for anything earth-shattering. Now on to building the real file server... Dave Thompson UW-Madison

CentOS 4.4 Strange hang on a poweredge 2900.

I have a brand new poweredge 2900 with 10 SAS drives configured in two arrays via the built-in PERC 5 raid controller as: raid 1: 2x73GB raid 10: 8x300GB It's got 4GB of ram, and it's intended to be an NFS filestore. For some strange reason, logging in with ssh works great, it returns a prompt, all seems well. I go to run a simple command like 'top' or 'yum -y install <package>', and my xterm/ssh session just locks. In some cases, it's drawn half of the top screen and hung, in other cases, it doesn't even do that. Kill the xterm window, bring a new one up, right back in, try it again, it repeats. What's interesting to me is that I have all kinds of other 'lesser' systems running CentOS 4.4, and I have none of these issues with them. My ~1.1TB raid 10 drive is sliced up into 4 parts, with the big one being about 950GB. Near as I can figure, I haven't hit any limitations, but I'm stumped by something that I *think* is probably either relatively trivial, or just a straight out hardware incompatibility. One thought is that it could be related to the Gb ethernet devices (bge). Commands like 'ifconfig -a' work great. 'dmesg | grep eth0' locks up the session. This is relatively frustrating. Googling doesn't seem to net any real results, and I can't seem to find anything relevant in the logs. One more relevant bit to add, this behavior does not exist from the console. CentOS 4.4 Kernel Release 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL Monitor: ViewSonic VX1935WM Video Adapter: Intel 82945 G Express KDE 3.3 Greetings I am attempting to configure my ViewSonic VX1935WM widescreen monitor. Unfortunately this model is not listed in the Display Settings. I have attempted the generic 1440 x 900 LCD monitor listed. This does not provide the required resolution. I have edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf and added my monitor, resolution, refresh rate, and screen size. The problem is that even when I have added this to xorg.conf the new resolution does not show in Display Settings and I cannot change my display to the new resolution. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you -- Linux... When you're ready.

creating script for init.d

Hello. I'm moving from a very old Fedora Core 1 to CentOS 4.4, what a change!! Three year ago, I wrote some script (network related) and worked very well. Now, I can put into init.d by means of chkconfig and I restarted the system, but always hang when executing my srcipt (in my new centos 4.4). There a manual for making scripts for init.d? there is some new requirement by which it does not work anymore? Thanks a lots!!!!

USB Mem Stick

Hi all, Is there any good how-to's for getting a usb memory stick to auto mount when it is connected to the usb port? Or is this to happen automatically? I got a 2G memory stick for Christmas so that I can transfer files from machine to machine (home/work) but it doesn't look like it mounts automatically like the cdrom does. Kickstart: Give IP From ks= Cmdline A Myth?

Hey, someone just told me yesterday that I can give my machine an initial IP address, gateway, dns server, and netmask via command line like this: linux ks=http://www.mydomain.com/kick.ks ip=192.168.1.5 netmask=255.255.255.0 gateway=192.168.1.1 dns=192.168.1.10 Is this true? Is the syntax wrong or right? If so, and I call my kick.ks file and it has install cdrom it'll pull the files from the CD but won't launch the CD install right? I just want to initiate a kickstart where the systems get their drive partitioning info, IP addressing & hostname attributes, and minimal install packages, from the kickstart file. Is it really true that you can use the above command line to give an address for the machine to use in seeking out a kickstart file on the network? I tried it a few times last night an looked for a very long time for examples of this syntax, and found none. -krb

Software RAID1 issue

When a new system CentOS-4.4 is built the swap partition is always reversed... Note md3 below, the raidtab is OK, I have tried various raid commands to correct. swapoff -a raidstop /dev/md3 mkraid /dev/md3 --really-force swapon -a And then I get a proper ourput for /proc/mdstat, but when I reboot /proc/mdstat again reads as below, with md3 [0] [1] reversed. Problem with HTTPS ON CENTOS 4.4

Hi all , I set up https on CentOS 4.4. I did the below sets of commands, first removed existing files rm /etc/httpd/conf/ssl.key /server.key rm /etc/httpd/conf/ssl.crt/server.crt Next, I created key. Change to the /usr/share/ssl/certs/ directory and type in the following command: make genkey then issued below command, make testcert finaly /sbin/service httpd restart Then I got the below error? Starting httpd: Apache/2.0.52 mod_ssl/2.0.52 (Pass Phrase Dialog) Some of your private key files are encrypted for security reasons. In order to read them you have to provide the pass phrases. Server worldnet.itabspl.com:443 (RSA) Enter pass phrase:Apache:mod_ssl:Error: Private key not found. **Stopped [FAILED] pls NOTE that I folowed the CENTOS DOC to set up this. Upgrading to larger HD with LVM

What's the easiest way to transition to a larger HD when using LVM2? I'm running Centos 4.4. I'm going from a 20gb HD to a 40gb HD. I've already DD'd it to the 40gb HD. So now I have 20gb of unused space. Ideally, I'd like to make it one big physical space for the logical space instead of making another physical partition to expand the logical. Yum uses too much resources

Hi all, When I do a simple string search with Yum (ex. yum search *hwinfo*) my laptop suffers high slowness. If I open another shell-tab and execute top command, it shows me an extensive use of hardware resources from Yum (20-25% RAM and 70-85% CPU). If in the same time I'm using Firefox browser the performance goes down too much and even it seems the box it's freezed. The box become totally useless during few minutes (until yum command has finished or I've killed it) More info about my old and loved laptop: * Hardware* Acer TravelMate 240 256RAM Celeron 2,5 Ghz *Software* CentOS 4.4 Final (totally updated at current day) Desktop default instalation (which means GNOME environment) ¿Is this behaviour "normal"? ¿What about this extensive hardware use from Yum? I supose my laptop is an old-fashioned hardware but this behaviour did not happen when I installed Ubuntu (and I did use apt to manage sofware) in same machine in recent past.

Hi all, I hope You have had nice Christmas Eve. My question: I've updated version 4.4, in that version of Gimp is 2.0.5 and the up-to-date version at Gimp website is 2.2.13 (stable). There seems to be 2.2.8 for FC3 but that's not the newest and thus I don't want to get it. How I should proceed when, - I want the latest stable version, - want to get some optional packages - want to be able to update these progs - I want to be able to upgrade this machine to new Centos 4.5 and Centos 5 in future Should I proceed using source code of Gimp and all packages (if they do not exist in my machine already) ? This question may sound a little naive but this is my home machine which I use also much for my works and I'm not willing to re-install it often (and I'm lazy too).
