Generator Microsoft Word 11 (filtered medium) Hi there, I' m trying to build a home made NAS/SAN server using Centos 4. I have an old HP ML series server with support for IDE disks only. So I thought that I could by some pci sata controller to use sata disks that are cheaper and faster than IDE' s. My question is , does anyone have used the Conceptronic PCI Sata Card sucefully in CentOS ? CentOS Compatible Graphics Card for Second Life

Hi I have been experimenting with the Linux Alpha client for Seeocnd Life, but the graphics do not render properly due to incomptibility of SL with the on-board Intel graphics adapter. Can anyone recommend a graphics adapter that is both Second Life AND CentOS 4.4 Linux compatible that will plug into the PCI bus? Thanks very much indeed. Clive

Hello! I need to get an arcnet device driver up and running. Normally it appears to be distributed with linux, but not installed. So, I need to compile and install it, naturally. So, where is the kernel souce for 2.6.9-42.ELsmp? I can find kernel source for 2.6.9. BTW, I obtained 2.6.9 and tried compiling it, but all I got was *.o files and insmod: error inserting 'arcnet.o`: -1 Invalid module format Seems that the rest of the /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/net appear to be *.ko files. Yes, I was able to get SATA working by going to AHCI (my BIOS has the option). However, for the DG965RYCK, as of kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL, I will need to update the ethernet driver, the video driver (for X), and the sound driver(s). And I have still not fully investigated any possible penalties from booting with pci=nommconf (without which I can't boot). YMMV, as always. At this point, I'm going to hold off and see what upstream gets included in 4.5. The fact that fedora works makes me hopeful that the hardware support will work its way into the enterprise product. This IS a "holy war" kind of question! :-) Most people have strong opinions about this topic and tend to be very black and white about "this way is the best!". In the real world, different things impress different employers. Some employers give a lot of credibility to certifications, some don't. If you're trying to get a break into a certain niche, every little bit helps. The RCHE cert does require hands on effort, so it's not looked at as a "paper certification". Your IT background is pretty decent anyway, so it's not like you're really starting from scratch. Especially the Solaris and HP experience is relevant to administering Linux. Btw, I got started with CentOS for the same reason as you. I wanted to pursue the RHCE and couldn't afford to fork out the cash for a Redhat license. (Are you listening Redhat? CentOS is bringing you business because it helps IT people get experience and eventually certification with your product!) Hi All, I'm pretty new to this list and to CentOS, so forgive me if this kind of thing is shunned. I have really enjoyed following some threads on this list and learning what everyone out there is doing with the OS. I actually got started on CentOS when researching how to study for the RHCE without forking out big cash for Red Hat licenses, a donation is coming soon. Anyway, I'm looking to do some part time Linux work (I'll work cheap, possibly free for a non-profit) and would like some suggestions on how others on the list have found odd job work. My goal with this work is to get some resume building Linux experience, help me pass the RHCE exam, and ultimately begin doing contact work or move into a full-time Linux/Unix position. I have two years experience administering HP-UX and Sun Solaris for a University, about 8 years total IT experience, and I've used Linux at home since 1998 or so; I just need some "real-world" Linux experience. I feel confident I can accomplish just about any Linux project using my broad background of experience and learning a little along the way. The main problem I see is that I only have 10-15 hours per week to give this, as I have a full-time IT job as well, so flexibility on time of day/time of week of work is key. Strange issue with device-mapper lib in CentOS

Hello all, a couple of weeks ago I've been installing CentOS 4.2 on a very-old server machine with MSI server board based on Intel GX440 chipset, two Xeons 500Mhz and one 1Gig of RAM. There is an AMI MegaRaid 467 installed as a storage controller, which causes some troubles with installation, as stock CenOS4 install and production kernels doesn't have older megaraid.ko module compiled, but there are a lot of not so very difficult ways to overcome it. After a clean-and-relatively-fast install first of all I had up2date-d it to CentOS 4.4, did some basic initial reconfigurations, turned it off and left it lay around doing nothing. Today its time has come, and I turned it on. While booting I've seen a message "Segmentation fault" just after a line about "Starting up LVM2". That's confused me a bit. Logged it as root, typed vgdisplay, got a normal output and a message "Segmentation fault" after it. lvdisplay performed just the same - normal display of all LVM logical volumes and a "Segmentation fault" at the bottom. Next step was obvious: # rpm -Va Huh, here we are. There's a bunch of RPMs with binary files in them changed since they've been installed. Just looks like it's a virus job I thinked. But, wait! That's very strange! This server has been laying around turned off and doing nothing since the moment I've done the installation of the system. There were NO possible time for a virus to infect a system. Well, in any case, I took on my special LiveCD with a ClamAV on it and a RamDisk for freshclam to store updated virus databases, booted it, mounted possibly infected system and checked it with clamscan. There were NO viruses found. Well, I though that this might be caused by a faulty SCSI disk in array, that distort the data that's being written to it, instead of informing host that there's a bad block here. Ok, that's easy to check. Let me go to the single mode, reinstall distorted RPMs using rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs, do a couple of 'sync's, remount all filesystems with -O ro,sync, and check installed rpm's with a rpm -Va. Headed on, done all above, got nothing. After a reinstall all files became correct, and LVM tools got back to a correct behavior without "Segmentation fault". Hmm... that's strange, I thought. Well, at least ATM I've got a correctly functioning system without viruses. Huh, well, now it's time to reboot and check how does it performs. I'm going to do unattended reboots in future, it should reboot seamlessly without excess questions. # shutdown -r now Reboot went smoothly, but just as LVM2 was initializing, I've got "Segmentation fault" message again! Damn! What's wrong?! Logged in, rpm -Va - gotcha! Again, device-mapper RPM was broken. Well, let's reinstall it again, sync, remount root readonly, check with rpm -V device-mapper. Done that - all seems to be ok, no output from the rpm -V = files are intact. Rebooted again. Run: [root@omega MegaMgr5.20]# rpm -V device-mapper ..5..... /lib/libdevmapper.so.1.02 That's it. After each and every reboot I've got this file corrupted. Looks like it's not a faulty HDD trouble, and it's not a faulty RAID controller. Most likely something corrupts this file during shutdown process or during boot process. Haven't got enough time today to investigate more deeply, going to continue with it tomorrow. I'm considering building a network gateway using a Via EpiaCN10000EG motherboard like seen here: http://www.logicsupply.com/product_info.php/cPath/79/products_id/444 I've heard that this is a pretty recent mobo and drivers for it are in Ubuntu but that a 2.6.9.x CentOS kernel might have troubles with it. Anyone have any opinions on this mobo? Thanks jed

dovecot disconnect(s)

Hi, I've got a problem with dovecot regarding a pop3 proxy issue. When I configure a dovecot server to do just plain pop3 I can telnet from a windows box without any flaw, but as soon as the client uses some pop3 proxy (for example outlook uses avira antivir Mail-AntiVirus Protection), queries to that server fail. A log line looks like this: pop3-login: Dec 05 22:53:24 Info: Disconnected [::ffff:84.165.54.42] Moreover with the proxy activated, a telnet to port 110 (pop3) is not working properly, the cursor stays right behind "+OK dovecot ready." and as soon as I enter a character, the server rejects this character as an unknown command. As soon as I turn off the Antivir-Proxy the telnet to port 110 runs flawlessly and I can login. Is there any fix for that? Or did I misunderstand something? Also, you can configure it to run with TCP over port 443, which makes it much more likely that a network you're connected to is going to allow the connection out. Hi, I want to setup vpn on centos 4.4. How can I do it ? What is the suitable pkg for it. I have only 2 requiremts. 1 st requirement is I want to setup a VPN SERVER on centos 4.4 on my end. It should talk to the other end. /var goes read-only

This is an issue that I have been having with one of our production servers for a couple of months, just out of no where /var goes to read only. There aren't any errors that show up in /var/log/messages nor dmesg, I checked to make sure that the drives on error option is set to continue and there isn't anything as far as I can tell wrong with the disks. Also there is plenty of disk space. I finally fixed my drive error problem. This has been going on quite a while. I've posted before with no success on getting this fixed. I was getting these errors. I've been hacked -- what should I do next?

My home system has been hacked. It's running CentOS 4.4, and I recently added an account to play around with Samba shares to back up PCs here at home. I had set a weak password for that account and forgot to disable it after my testing. I could hear the disk being accessed constantly, so I knew something was up. I disabled the port forwarding to my CentOS box on my Linksys router (only ports 22 and 80 were being forwarded). After some poking around, I found the following files in the directory "/var/tmp/ /.. In need of assistance... (part 2)

Hello, i wrote in a week ago and was overwhelmed by the response, but maybe i need to be more specific. We need to get a rock solid backup system in place, basically a self-running system that would be set up once and then periodically checked on. We have 2 Windows machines (NT4, 2003 Server) and 3 Linux Machines (Centos 4.4, Centos 4.3 and Red Hat 3). Two machines are hosted locally (Centos 4.4 & NT4). We have a Dell Server that just needs new hard drives and that could be setup to be a backup server, but we want to be sure that we have off-site backups of the local machines (so we could ship the machine to a hosting facility once it is set up). We would like to have the ability to have a rolling archive of about 30 days. Since we are a publishing company, our archives are important but not critical to our daily operations and they don't change. The current projects are changed daily and need to be archived daily. We are open to the options that were suggested a week ago, but we are thinking that we need someone to implement it. This is very important and not something that should be left to someone who is 'learning as he goes'. We need a clear and solid plan along with someone who could execute it. Please let me know of any people who are in/around San Diego, California and could help us- or someone who could accomplish the task flawlessly with a remote connection. another iscsi question

I have an iscsi array that I'd like to mount and share using NFS and I need it to happen without user intervention on a reboot. In the default configuration this doesn't seem to work very well because the iscsi intiator isn't started until after the network is up (obviously) and by that time all local filesystems are mounted. I can't mount the partitions in rc.local because NFS has already started. Does a tidy way to handle this already exist, or do I need to do something like hack /etc/init.d/iscsi to mount and unmount iscsi partitions as necessary? James

kde cant mount cdroms on users with nfs home

I can't mount the cdrom when the user account has an nfs home directory. It works fine on the gnome side with the same user. It also works fine if I create a brand new local account, with no nfs mounted home directory. This error is affecting all users on all computers; not just one account. The one thing in common is that they all are using nfs mounted home directories and that CentOS is the distro. Older systems that are still using fc3 dont have this issue. Any ideas? Suggestions?

If you download the iso images to an NFS exported directory you can burn only the first CD and boot it with 'linux askmethod' at the boot prompt, then select NFS as the install method and fill in the server and path info. AMD 64 single core and vmware

...months ago, I started using vmware w/this same setup and, I think it was Aleksandar Milivojevic and directed me to a link to a white paper or whatever w/the tweaks to get me running right. I have issues of typematic and time sync. I believe that the tweaks actually took away the power saving features of the cpu and set the processor at one steady speed. I thought I saved that page somewhere but w/all the confusion and have really been away from this for the most part for months now, I cannot find that page and I have been googling forever on my own to try to find it w/no luck. Ideally, I'd put a CentOS in the CD of the target computer, I boot it off of that CD, and then the rest is done over my network and with the server. Has anyone done that and published it? Sorry for the top post, but yahoo is dumb. Maybe its just me though... Yes, we are running with iSCSI filesystems mounted. CentOS 4.4 iscsi-initiator-utils-4.0.3.0-4 GFS Performance using iozone (I don't have the test run data available, but it was acceptable given the redundancy and concurrent write operations GFS gives us) testing was good on the test systems, but we haven't done testing on the final production systems yet. I'm waiting to resolve mounting the third iSCSI partition properly on 2/4 of the cluster nodes before running an all-out test. Hi list, CentOS 4.4 connecting to Promise M500i iSCSI disk array. 2/4 servers connect fine with iscsi-initiator-utils-4.0.3.0-4. win32:tenga on samba share

I have a box set up for home use, but it was used as a massive file share for a bunch of friends. I only allowed 3 accounts to this share with password. I believe over time someone loaded a file that had the win32:Tenga virus on it. I usually clean the files and download what I need but I leave the files on the Share. I have lots of directories and files on this. I have been using Trend Micro from a remote windows box to clean them periodically but for some reason it rears it ugly head every once and a while. Large disk support

I have a 3.5 TB RAID 5 Array through a 3ware 9590SE 8 port card, and am running into what seems like quite a lot of problems trying to get the system installed correctly. The system is a running dual Opterons with 2 GB of RAM, and I'm attempting to install through the x86_64 ServerCD. First, grub refuses to install on the disk, as it's too large. I can get around this though by booting Fedora Core 6 in rescue mode and running grub, as it can deal with the disk size correctly. This might only be working when I attempt installs that don't utilize as much of the array as possible though (100 MB /boot, 2GB swap, 10Gb /, the rest left unallocated). Secondly, there seems to be a problem using msdos disk labels with large partitions, and I can't seem to find any solutions to this in the manuals or on the net. GPT labels are offered as a solution to this but only for Itanium systems. Am I missing some obvious solution to this? Are there some best practices for dealing with large disks anyone can share that may save me problems now or later? I'm open to suggestions, as all I've encountered so far are problems. -- - Kevan Benson - A-1 Networks

Hi All, first time post so please excuse any blunders We are specifying two servers using supermicro X7DBE+ MB and want to add on a SAS controller for Raid 10. We want to use the CentOS 4.4 X86_64 distro. We are currently considering an Intel CC SRCSAS144E SAS Raid Controller for the servers using 4 Fujitsu 147 GB SAS HDD, and a Adaptec SASC RAID 4805 8-port for the server using 6 Fujitsu 147 GB SAS HDD. LiveCD problem on IBM BladeCenter remote console ?

I've got a IBM BladeCenter with its integral TCPIP KVM and centos and stuff running on various blades, we use this mostly for software testing purposes in a small development group. i wanted to boot the liveCD so I could try and recover some files from a totally screwed up system (disk got fsck'd beyond what I feel comfortable repairing)... so I map an ISO image of the CentOS 4.4 live CD on the virtual CD drive function of the blade chassis, and reboot my broken blade on it. getting fatal errors from the boot that it can't find the CD drive. screen capture with it crispy. http://hogranch.com/files/Bitmaps/remotescreen1.png the regular CentOS Server CD was boot fine on these blades not long ago. there -is- an oddness where sometimes the virtual CD shows up as a second SCSI CD drive to the target.

pam_access not working?

Hi, I am having a strange problem, where I cannot get pam_access to work as intended. I have placed the following line in /etc/pam.d/system-auth account required /lib/security/pam_access.so Then, in /etc/security/access.conf, I have put the following line: -:mok:10.14.44.104 I.e. I should prevent myself from logging on from host 10.14.44.104. However, when I try to log on (using ssh) from the specified host, I get in without a problem. There is nothing in the logs. It does not help restarting sshd, or rebooting. It does not help putting "ALL" instead of the IP number. I happily get in... Another weird thing is that if I give the argument "debug" to pam_access.so -- as the manual says you can -- it does say something in the log, namely that "debug" is not a recognized option. The system is CentOS release 4.4. I hope someone on this list can offer a bit of advice! Cheers, Morten
