Keyboard Fails at Login Prompt

I get the login prompt and I get just enough time to type in "root" and hit the enter button before the keyboard fails. I've tried a different keyboard but still the same problem. firewall dropping legitimate packets

I'm experiencing strange problem with my CentOS 4.4 based firewall. In short, it seems to drop packets during larger downloads (several MB in size and larger). Most of the time, the connection itself doesn't break, it is just halted for about a minute or so and that continues. Rather annoying. The problem seems to exist only when downloading content from particular servers. The first rule in my firewall configuration accepts all packets in ESTABLISHED state: -A FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT This is basically the only relevant rule. I also have this rule to log dropped packets at the end of FORWARD chain: -A FORWARD -j LOG --log-prefix "FORWARD " Every time the download stalls, I see bunch of packets belonging to that download logged as dropped. If I set /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_be_liberal to 1, it seems to solve the problem. Being liberal on firewall machine usually is not a good thing, so I'm not particularly happy with this solution. Googling around I found this posting on Netfilter-devel list: http://www.opensubscriber.com/message/netfilter-devel@lists.netfilter.org/2… The replies suggest that the problem is known, and that it was solved in "recent" versions of kernel (recent in this context is around September 2005). Looking at the changelog for kernel package, I don't see any mention of this fix being backported to CentOS/RHEL 2.6.9 kernel. Or maybe I was searching wrong keywords. Anyhow, the main questions are, am I the only one (still) seeing this problem? Does anybody remembers having similar problems, or does anybody knows if above mentioned fix was ever backported into CentOS/RHEL 2.6.9 kernel?

CentOS 3 - I/O performance with Promise HW RAID

We have CentOS 3.6 x86_64 running on a server with dual 2.2GHz Opterons and a Promise UltraTrak RM8000 connected via an Adaptec SCSI card. We are seeing what seems to be gradual I/O performance degradation over time; it seems to be OK for up to about 90 days, but not long after that both CPUs end up continuously spending 50-99% of their time in "iowait" state when reading/writing the RAID device, and processes begin to be stuck for minutes at a time in disk wait state, until finally the server becomes unusable. A simple reboot, even with a forced fsck, does NOT clear this up, but a full shutdown followed by power cycling the RAID device and then rebooting, seems to return things to normal. After doing some research when this most recently happened, we have used elvtune to lower the read and write latency on /dev/sda4 (which is the primary filesystem on the RAID) to 128 and 256 respectively. However, we don't yet know whether this will make any difference, as it has only been 48 hours since the power cycle and it usually takes months for the problem to become noticable. I'd like to get out ahead of it this time if I can, so that we either know when to schedule a power cycle or have some confidence that we won't need to. Any information would be appreciated. (Below this point is just hardware data in case it is helpful.) I need some advice. I updated the kernel but when I restarted my computer I got the following error message: -- I cannot start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. ... Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module! -- I've started my computer using the old kernel. I found out that there's a new nvidia driver so I will also update it. I've downloaded this driver. I can think of two ways to solve this problem but I'd rather have some expert advice. What's the best way to boot with the new kernel, install the nvidia driver and of course update the NVIDIA kernel module? Thanks in advance, Corwin Burgess

centos and apache DOS question

Hi, I have a centos 4.4 box running Apache serving up web pages. One of my customers has a marketing firm that once a week pulls all of the content so that they can do their thing. When they do this the box stops serving web pages. The load goes to 0.0 and top shows almost no memory free. The box does not swap nor do I get OOM to kick in. Normally the box has about 20-30 httpd processes running but when they are pulling the whole web site I see about 255 httpd processes. If I kill the httpd processes then top shows the load immediately spiking to over 30 and then coming back down to normal. The box is a 3.2 gig P4 with 2 gigs of memory in it. Normally top shows it has 300-400 megs free, with about 300 megs in buffers. I can have the marketing company throttle their downloading of the web site but I think that is the wrong answer. I would like to fix the real cause of the problem. Does anyone know what is going on here or how to troubleshoot this? Is there some kind of tuning I am supposed to be doing to prevent this kind of thing? Do I need more memory? Any help would be appreciated including pointers to docs on this type of thing. file size limit in apache 2.0 on centos 4

I think I am encountering a download file size limit on centos 4 with httpd-2.0.52 The file in question is 5.2G in size, it does not show up in a browser directory listing, and I'm getting the error in the http error_log value too large for defined data type: access can someone confirm that there is a 4GB limit (or other) in the standard apache 2.0 on CentOS 4? Are you sure ALL the files are 100% the same, including executables and libraries? I would do an md5sum of EVERY file that might be even remotely related to the behavior of Apache, Horde and anything else and then compare the MD5sums of all the files on the two different systems. If that doesn't turn up anything, then do rpm -qa and make sure all the packages are at the same version. The strange thing is that both Apaches are configured the same so I would expect the same problem with both. This not being the case, I'm thinking the problem is not with Apache but with Horde or elsewhere. However Horde was copied from one server to another (it's actually the original install that's giving the problem so that rules out an error when copying across). OT: Problems with Pound Signs and Apache

Hi list, I have 2 Centos 4 servers running the Horde system, apparently identical in configuration, but they are behaving differently... On one, when emails containing a Pound Sign (£) are displayed it shows as Â£ (not sure if this will come through right, but it's a capital A with a 'hat' accent over it followed by the pound sign). On the other, the Pound sign displays correctly. I have copied the httpd.conf files over between servers and this has no effect. Looking at the page source both are en-gb and UTF8. It looks like the problem is not with Apache as the config files are identical. Both servers are running the same version of Apache, and for that matter the same version of everything else, and all updates are applied. Would anyone have any ideas where to start looking to track down this discrepancy? Thanks! Andy.

HP Surestore 12000e and multi-LUN

I am running CentOS 4.4 and trying to bring up my tape library. When I do cat /proc/scsi/scsi, it shows only the drive and not the changer although both are shown when the Adaptec card initializes. I recall in the distant past that I had to do "something" to get the kernel to properly scan the SCSI bus for the additional LUN but I cannot for the life of me recall what that was. It would have also been a much earlier kernel. Can anyone here help me out? Regards, paul

Proper partition/LVM growth after RAID migration

Hi This topic is perhaps not for this list, but it I'm running on a CentOS 4.4 and it seems that a lot of people here uses 3Ware and RAID volumes. I did a RAID migration on a 3Ware 9590SE-12, so that an exported disk grew from 700GB to 1400GB. The exported disk is managed by LVM. The problem now is that I don't really know what to do now to let LVM and my locigal volume to make use of this new disk size, and probably future disk size growth. I initially imagined that I could let the physical partition grow and then the LVM PV, the LV and the FS (ext3) to grow to fill up the new exported disk size. Then I realized that this is not how LVM is designed - you add PVs and let the LV and FS to grow. But, what if the underlying exported disk from a RAID card is growing as you add disks to it's RAID volume? Should you create new physical partitions on the exported disk, and specifically, extended partitions, since you might in the future add more than 4 partitions? Secondly, it seems there is a problem after this migration: The graphical LVM shows that I have an "Unpartitioned space" on the exported disk, but I can't click on "Initialize entry" button. HP (compaq) RAID - How to get alerts?

Hi All, Background: I have HP RAID setups (Smart Array 5, shows up as /dev/cciss/c0d0) on my DL380s, and they run great with CentOS. I have had a drive failure (HDD lights up amber), so I pulled the HDD, replaced it and the RAID controller rebuilt the array in a jiffy - no probs. My question: I cant find anything in the logs to alert me that a drive failed - this makes sense since the RAID is hardware, so i presume i need some management software however i cant find anything on HP or Compaq's sites to tell me what software i need to be running. I imaging it is something like cpq_alert or such. | Does anyone on the list run HP or Compaq hotswapable kit? How do you get alerted to failures? Thanks, MrKiwi

Changing kernel params in CentOS 4.2

Hello - One of my users would like a kernel parameter changed. We're running CentOS 4.2 so I'm not sure if we need to upgrade the kernel for this change or not. He's seen that in the 2.6.11.12 kernel "PIPE_SIZE is defined in include/linux/pipe_fs_i.h and takes on the value of PAGE_SIZE" He wants PIPE_SIZE to be increased to 8*PAGE_SIZE. Can this be changed in the 2.6.9 kernel? If so, where would this be changed? If not, what kernel would be suggested for an upgrade (we have some experience with FC3 & the 2.6.11 kernel already)? Last, in your opinion does changing the kernel rev greatly change the name of what you're running? If we go to say the 2.6.16 kernel on our CentOS 4.2 system, is it still valid to call it CentOS 4.2? Alfred, You can use xvidtune or gtf to generate modelines. Both should be included with your distribution. It's been a while since I used them, so check the man pages for how to use them. nvidia-installer should be installed when you run NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-XXXX-pkg1.run. Do 'locate nvidia-installer' or 'which nvidia-installer'. I'm using a dual-headed setup w/ the NVIDIA driver and it works fine, even with hardware 3D stereo. BTW - I'm using RHEL3WS. I haven't switched to CentOS yet. If you're going to do that, you definitely want to tweak the settings for Full-Scene Anti-Aliasing (FSAA). How to do that is documented somewhere in the NVidia-supplied documentation. We use NVidia cards to do 3D hardware stereo graphics to view molecules in 3D. I only updated to the nvidia-supplied driver on a couple of machines because "it was there" not because the stock driver was slow or broken. APIC error on CPU0: 60(60)

I have a lot of this errors in my Centos stock 4.3 version in an Intel D945gnt motherboard with a Pentium D (dual core) If I disable apic in the grub.conf (apic=off) will I get a performance hit? Im running Asterisk on that machine. 40 is Received Illegal Vector 20 is Send Illegal Vector 60 means you're getting both errors at the same time. Basically it means that the APIC bus messages are malformed. The cause can be hardware or software, it's difficult to tell. If oyu really want to take advantage of the performance those cards have to offer, you should use the nvidia (that's the actual module name used by X) driver downloaded directly from NVidia. It makes a world of difference in performance, is easy to install, and is completely distribution neutral. I/O resource -- not free --- IRDA problems?

I get a message while booting of: ide2: I/O resource 0x3EE-0x3EE not free. ide2: ports already in use, skipping probe Googling for this, I find it is relatively common, and on different laptops. I thought it might be my internal SD reader causing the problems, but these other notebooks do not have such devices. Then I found: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~pb22/I8600/ and: " IrDA - works except on COM3 / ttyS2 It appears that *ttyS2* (the FC2 default) does not work as the IrDA - on boot it reports `*ttyS2 at I/O 0x3e8 (irq = 0) is a 16550A*' and `*ide2: I/O resource 0x3EE-0x3EE not free.*', `*ide2: ports already in use, skipping probe*'. As such, during *POST* press *F2* and *Alt-P* 3 times and set the IrDA to *COM2* or *COM4* (which select *IRQ 3* with *I/O 0x2f8* or *0x2e8* on *ttyS1* or *ttyS3* - ra3 is the latter). Edit */etc/pcmcia/config.opts* to `*exclude irq 3*' (so that the IRQ is free) and */etc/sysconfig/irda* to set `*DEVICE=/dev/ttyS3*' (or *1*), and run `*chkconfig irda on*' so that it starts on reboot (or `*/etc/rc.d/init.d/irda start*' or `*irattach /dev/ttyS3 -s*'). It should load *ircomm_sir*, *sir_dev*, *irnet*, *ppp_generic*, *slhc*, *ircomm_tty*, *ircomm*, *irda*, *irtty_sir* and *crc_ccitt*, and */var/log/messages* should have" Now I have already put ttyS2 on irq3 (from dmseg): ttyS2 at I/O 0x3e8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A How do I test the IRDA?
