removing multiple packages

Can someone in the list guide me how do I remove an RPM file which is installed 2 times. Following are the error: [root@Gateway Samba64-23c]# rpm -e samba-common error: "samba-common" specifies multiple packages and rpm -qa |grep samba gives as below samba-common-3.0.10-1.4E-9 samba-common-3.0.10-1.4E-9 It list 2 times the same package and I can not remove them. Whereis Pessulus?

Hi all, I'm mounting a LTSP server whith CentOS 4.4. The default desktop will be Gnome. I'm looking for lockdown tool and I think Pessulus maybe a good option, but I don't found it with yum. ¿Is Pessulus included in CentOS? ¿Another lockdown tools as alternatives? CentOS 2.1 on i586

I've just attempted to reinstall my ancient laptop that has Pentium MMX processor. Since it is ancient, I've decided to go with CentOS 2.1. Got stuck, installer claims I need at least i686. Hmmm... I know that 3.8 and 4.4 work without a glitch on i586, so this came as surprise. I even thing original RHEL2.1 might had support for i586 too (but I might be wrong). Anyhow, what happened with i586 in CentOS 2.1?

make 3.79.1 assertion failed error

Hi, Sorry for cross-posting but I need to tap into my most helpful mailinglists for this problem. I have had assertion failed errors from make before and never understood what they were or where they came from. But now that I have them consistently for ffmpeg and mplayer on everything smaller than FC2, which prevents me from updating both mplayer and ffmpeg (and I know lots of other applications have the same issue). The exact error is: make: expand.c:489: allocated_variable_append: Assertion `current_variable_set_list->next != 0' failed. By coincidence (called Google) I found this page: http://valgrind.org/docs/manual/faq.html#faq.make_dies and it made the relation with make 3.79.1 pretty clear. (fc1, el3, rh9, rh7 and el2 all use make 3.79.1) I was wondering if anyone knows of a better solution than explained in the valgrind FAQ, or better than upgrading make. Once upon a time mplayer built without this assertion, other applications as well. So is this caused by a more recent configure/autotools used by the developers ? Some way to prevent this ? yum repository and createrepo

I've setup a local yum repository for about 25 workstations and I'm using rsync from a local mirror. Do I need to create my own XML headers, i.e. the 'repodata' directory, or since I'm syncing the whole updates directory can I use the 'repodata' directory from the mirror? I also have a question on using createrepo. The directory layout is: ~/updates/ ~/updates/headers/ ~/updates/repodata/ ~/updates/RPMS/ If I do the following in the 'updates' directory: # createrepo -v ./RPMS The 'repodata' diretcory is created under the 'RPMS' directory and not the current 'updates' directory. How can I have the 'repodata' directory created/updated in the correct directory under 'updates'? Right now I'm manually moving the directory. I would probably need to do this in my daily cron job. usb stopped working

Warning of protential probs with 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL update

Not sure yet what or where the problems are but having just done a jum update on my HP laptop (nw8240) and my IBM desktop from 2.6.9.42.0.2.EL the laptop is locking up during boot sequence and the desktop when running VMware Workstation seems to take all CPU and makes strange noises from the loudspeaker. Using grub to fall back to last kernel all is ok again !!. Ian

USB multi-card reader working, finally took the time

A thread on multi-cards 2 months ago, gave me a hint on how to get usb multi-card readers working: Quoting "J.J. That's the way I was doing it so far, and it always worked for me. " So I then had to learn how to rebuild initrd image. Turns out that is mkinitrd (duh :-[ ). So I added to my /etc/modprobe.conf: options scsi_mod max_luns=8 Then: mkinitrd -v --image-version .... edited /boot/grub/grub.conf to use this new initrd, and now my MP3 players with internal and external SD cards are working properly. I am ASSuMing that once modprobe.conf is altered, as I get new kernels, the change will carry forward, and I will not have to do my own mkinitrd? I base this on my recent update to 42.0.3 and a new initrd file.

The Highlights: -CentOS 4.4 & CUPS -HPLIP Installed -Running as server, no GUI. -Can print from command-line no problem. -Printing from Windows XP via Samba puts job in the correct queue, job is processed but not parsed or rendered. There may be minor differences, but I would not expect this much difference. Actually, further testing has shown that the write performance on the second machine varies anywhere from 20MB/Sec to 54MB/Sec depending on when I test it. Unfortunately, it appears random from my point of view. I'm still running tests to try to find a cause or at least a related symptom. The First system has Maxtor 7V250F0 drives (250GB). The second system has Seagate ST3500641AS drives (320GB). They are both 7200RPM SATA II drives with 16MB cache and NCQ support. -- Bowie

I know there are a few 3Ware fans here and I was hoping to find some help. I just built a new server using a 3Ware 9550SX-4LP with four disks in raid 5. The array is fully initialized but I'm not getting the write performance I was hoping for -- only 40 to 45MB/Sec. 3Ware's site advertises 300MB/Sec writes using 8 disks on the PCI Express version of this card (the 9580 I think.) I'm guessing 4x PCI Express has more bandwidth but 133Mhz 64-bit PCI-X is no slouch. The only two things I need to change are to put the disks in 3GB/Sec SATA mode (they're in 1.5GB/Sec mode right now) and to enable memory interleaving on the motherboard (I only have two sticks of memory, this M/B needs 4 for interleaving.) But I don't think these things should drop me down to the write performance of a single IDE disk. Does anyone have any suggestions on improving write performance? In fact our development team has not realized that we took away their 4 dev boxes and replaced them with 1 physical server running running 4 virtual machines. (2 apache web servers and 2 tomcat application servers). We also purchased P2V from VMware to migrate several legacy WindowsNT boxes to VMware images which we are running on 2 beefy CentOS 4.4 servers. 2 x 3.4GHz Xeon 4Gb ram. Jeff

Uneven CPU speed with CentOS 4.4 on a Mac Pro

Hi list, I've recently managed to install CentOS 4.4 on an Apple Mac Pro. Functionality-wise everything works great, but when trying to benchmark the system, I don't get stable runtimes, they differ by more than 30%. For example a benchmark run with our PDE solving code takes between 500 and 800 s on the completely unloaded machine. Hi, I just installed CentOS 4.4 x86_64 on our new 2 x Dual Core Opteron Server. First the system was unstable, but I after turning of Power-now it runs stable (anyone else experienced this?). However the following line in dmesg puzzles me: tg3: eth0: No interrupt was generated using MSI, switching to INTx mode. Please report this failure to the PCI maintainer and include system chipset information. Has someone else experienced this? What does it mean and who am I supposed to contact? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but a simple pointer would be appreciated. Apart from this message the system runs fine. Hardware Information: Server: Supermicro 816S-R700 Motherboard: Supermicro H8DSP-8 Chipset: ServerWorks HT2000 / HT1000 Processors: 2 x Opteron Dualcore 2.2 GHz RAM: 4 GB Ethernet is of course on the mainboard. Latest kernel fixes AMD cool 'n quiet

Just thought I'd follow up on my post from around august.... it seems that the latest kernel has indeed fixed the cool 'n quiet issues with my Athlon X2 3800. basically the following messages were appearing; powernow-k8: ignoring illegal change in lo freq table-2 to 0x2 powernow-k8: transition frequency failed and both cores were going at full 2.0ghz speed. Now with 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp the errors have disappeared and both cores are running at 1ghz when the system is idle. I'm very surprised as I checked the changelog (rpm -q --changelog) and there was no specific mention of any fix that I could find. I had actually toyed with the idea of running another distro on the server as it lives in my garage which, obviously, has no Aircon and the summers here in Brisbane get pretty hot.

'Political' Questions on CentOS please

Hi I have used CentOS personally for 'ages' but i have some questions that i need answering from the wider audience. These are for management as i am proposing RHEL for our QA and Prd infrastructure and CentOS for dev. I would go CentOS for all areas but we need 'support' on our prd systems. Can anyone tell me roughly how many cpu's are running centos? How widespread is it, does anyone really know? How many developers are helping with CentOS? When did CentOS 'start' and how long will it be around for? I am trying to get an accurate answer to fend off the 'well it could disappear at any minute' argument. thanks guys

YUM needs older version

Sorry to bring this topic up again, but I am confused as to why yum needs an older version and how to resolve the problem. I get this error from yum: Error: Missing Dependency: httpd = 2.0.52-22.ent.centos4 is needed by package httpd-manual Error: Missing Dependency: libgcj = 3.4.5 is needed by package libgcj-devel Since most of this is outside my skill set, I am not sure if "yum resolvedep httpd" is the correct way to determine what is present, nevertheless, I got httpd-2.0.52-28.ent.centos4.i386 and libgcj-3.4.6-3.i386 for libgcj. That appears to be telling me that I have newer versions of both currently installed. Is that try? How can I resolve the problem? smbmount: mount() syscall gone bad ?

The reported that when issuing a smbmount command (both client and server are CentOS 4.4), it would take up to 30 second for the mount to complete. To make a long history short, by using strace and the source, I noticed smbmnt is first calling mount() using ascii options for *data. Then that would timeout, and it would try again using a struct, finally working. Looking at the source code, it will first try ascii if kernel >= 2.4, and fallback to struct if it doesn't work. So changing smbmnt.c to always using the struct first solved my problem. I also noticed that debian will always go first for the struct aproach. automatic shutdown of UPS (and RAID1)

I have an MGE UPS Pulsar Ellipse 600 USBS that I'm setting up with CentOS 4.4 I tried for some time to get it working with USB, but failed and I have had much more success using the serial port. I have managed to complete the whole install procedure (shown here: http://www.networkupstools.org/doc/2.0.1/INSTALL.html )but I'm lost when it comes to implementing the shutdown script. I'm also using Software RAID1 for all partions (/, /boot, swap, and two others). I've never edited shutdown scripts before and after a few days of Googling and manual reading I'm still not sure what to do. Is it as simple as just putting the script in a file in the rc0.d directory? I'm not sure what the file should be named so the script is run at the right time, and I don't know how to ensure the software RAID1 is ready to be powered off. Feel free to tell me to RTFM, just let me know which FM I should be looking at. :-) Here's the step I'm stuck on: 11. Edit your shutdown scripts: add upsdrvctl shutdown You should configure your system to power down the UPS after the filesystems are remounted read-only. Have it look for the presence of the POWERDOWNFLAG (from upsmon.conf), using this as an example: if (test -f /etc/killpower) then echo "Killing the power, bye!" /usr/local/ups/bin/upsdrvctl shutdown sleep 120 # uh oh... the UPS power-off failed # you probably want to reboot here so you don't get stuck! # *** see the section on power races in shutdown.txt! *** fi Be careful: that upsdrvctl command will probably power off your machine. migrating servers (advice)

Hi, I'm about to copy the contents of one server onto another. The "plan" that I've come up with is: 1) boot the new server with a live disc, partition accordingly 2) a big tar-over-ssh for the /boot, and root partitions (that's all there is) 3) adjust the fstab so that it'll find the new scsi partitions vs. the old ATA ones. 3) then chroot into the new system and run grub to initialize the bootloader. I'm switching a server from a single HD to a SCSI mirror on our new machine. So it has a different partition setup and I don't want to mess with resizing. Does that sound about right to get the machine booted? Erick, You need to contact Servin. Bar none they have the absolute best training manual for CentOS/RHEL. I have used it to teach before. Each chapter is a series of steps for the particular topic. Combine this with a theory book such as "Understanding the Linux Kernel" and some time on the computer and your students will walk out transformed. Safely updating to 4.4 via yum (chicken)

Hi guys: I saw the pelthora of threads where people had trouble moving to 4.4. So I'm chicken now and I was trying to wait for the dust to settle, I suppose it has and its been long enough I'm nervous about not upgrading. I need to do a a production server that is located in a data center far away so even more than normal I want a smooth upgrade. Can someone tell the what the concensous was on the best way to do the upgrade and avoid problems. From my notes I got: yum upgrade python-sqlite yum upgrade sqllite yum upgrade yum yum clean all yum update But at least one guy said his box was still hosed with duplicates and a broken bind after that. What's the method to upgrade 4.3-> 4.4 with the highest change of sucess? Thanks very much for the help. Scott

Write performance with 3ware 9550

I have two identical servers. The only difference is that the first one has Maxtor 250G drives and the second one has Seagate 320G drives. OS: CentOS-4.4 (fully patched) CPU: dual Opteron 280 Memory: 16GB Raid card: 3ware 9550Sx-8LP Raid volume: 4-disk Raid 5 with NCQ and Write Cache enabled On the first server I have decent performance. Nothing spectacular, but good enough. The second one has about 1/3 the write speed. I can't find any difference between the systems. Both of them have the same stripe size, both have ext3 filesystems, both have write caching and NCQ turned on. I have already increased the read ahead setting to 16384 on both servers. Apache DirectoryIndex

I'd like to change the DirectoryIndex document for just the DocumentRoot, leaving the default DirectoryIndex setting for all other directories. However, when I set DirectoryIndex in the <Directory "/var/www/html"> section of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf it seems to set it for *all* directories. DirectoryIndex doesn't seem to be allowed in .htaccess either. Does anyone know how to set this? Thanks, Kirk Bocek

Cluster Quorum Question/Problem

Greetings all, I am in need of professional insight. I have a 2 node cluster running CentOS, mysql, apache, etc. I have on each system a fiber HBA connected to a fiber SAN. Each system shows the devices sdb and sdc for each of the connections on the HBA. I have sdc1 mounted on both machines as /quorum. When I right to the /quorum from one of the nodes, the file doesn't show up on the other. However, if I unmount and remount the device on the system that can't see the new file, the file shows up, but is broken/red and cannot be accessed by the node that couldn't see it in the first place. This works in both directions. Do I have things set up wrong? I'm so confused..... If they are sharing the same virtual drive on the same device in the same place, how can it not be the same on both systems??? Non-interleaved memory sounds interesting. Where do I change that setting? I don't want to change the StorSave setting. I'm not really looking for maximum performance here, just reasonable. If I can get the same 60 M/s speed that I got from the first server, I'll be happy. The drives are all running at 3.0GB/Sec according to the drive information in 3DM. I have read the entire "Calling All FS Fanatics" thread as it passed through the list. It was quite interesting, but the main things I got from it are: - Increase the read ahead settings - XFS, JFS, and ReiserFS are faster, but less fault-tolerant, than ext3 I have already changed the read ahead on both the physical volume and the logical volume. This gives me increased read performance, but has no effect on writes. I am sticking with ext3 since I am much more concerned about stability than performance. Training Material: Books about linux but targeting Centos installations

Hi, I am about to give a training session in Linux, using Centos 4.4 as a base. I want to give my students (MS windows administrators) printed books about Linux and hopefully Centos based. It is a total of 20 books. I'm also interested in purchasing 20 copies of the DVD of Centos 4.4 x86/x86_64 distro. My initial search at amazon returned no useful results. It can be RHEL 4, Centos 4 or fedora 4 based but I really want them to be Centos if possible, given the fact that I often scracth RHEL intallations in favor of Centos (i know is the same base, but I would like to match the book with the distro). The books have to be focused to Linux administration and installation (like web,ssh.mail.etc). There is no need to cover in-depth programming (perl,bash,etc). Can anyone in the Centos community have some references of these books/DVDs for purchase? Multiple Instances of Apache on the same IP

Hi All, I'm trying to run multiple instances ( 2 ) of Apache on a single IP address. I need this because I need the two instances to run as different users. I've set up two config files with the following: config-1 config-2 ServerRoot "/etc/httpd" ServerRoot "/etc/httpd" Listen 10.220.1.156:80 Listen 10.220.1.156:8080 Include conf.d/*.conf Include conf.d/*.conf User apache User backuppc Group apache Group backupp DocumentRoot "/var/www/html" DocumentRoot "/var/www/html" When I start either apache it works but when I try to start both the second one doesn't start. Error Message: When I start config-1 first and then config-2 I get the following error message Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:443 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs When I start config-2 first and the config-1 I get nothing. I suspect the problem is loading the SSL module which in both cases is trying to listen on port 443. So short of removing the ssl.conf file from conf.d or creating duplicate conf.d directories one without the ssl.conf file is there anyway to do this. Regards, Tony -- Tony Molloy. Dept. of Comp. Sci.
