hey friends, I am using Centos 4.0 and I want to upgrate to Kde 3.5.x. Can anyone tell me the yum repository for the same so that I don't have to download the rpms manually just yum upgrade kde I checked on the http://apt.kde-redhat.org/apt/kde-redhat/redhat/4/i386/RPMS.stable/ but kde-redhat-release-3.4.1-1.el4.noarch.rpm rpms are there. CentOS 4.4 ia64?

Greetings list, I had a quick spin through the archives and don't see any discussion on this question: Is there a reason why the ia64 download directories for v4.4 are populated with links to 4.3? (And why the torrent files for v4.3 ia64 don't work?) Now, instead of the symptom, I'll describe my actual problem. Has anyone successfully installed CentOS (any flavor, although I prefer ia64 and stock) on a Sun Microsystems X2200 server? installing gvcs package and libgtk error

I installed a gcvs package today. I tried to then run gcvs and I get this error: gcvs: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory rpm -qa | grep libgtk returns nothing. yum install libgtk returns Nothing to do. Hi, I am running a CentOS 4.3 machine. I wish to move on to 4.4. My problem is that I have some 60 duplicate packages listed below. The kernel and gpg-pubkey packages are different versions of the same (none for the gpg) architecture. All the rest are a x86_64 and i[356]86 pairs. 1. Is this a problem? 2. If yes, what should I do? a) remove the duplicates (the i[356]86) and then 4.3 -> 4.4? b) 4.3 -> 4.4 and only after that remove duplicates? c) something else? 3. How to actually do the removal? Simply 'yum remove ...' or are there some packages that require special care? 4. I have enabled the dries, kbsingh, and rpmforge, repositories for few packages (acroread, pine,...). However, I didn't keep track which packages come from those repos so I can't apply the 'includepkgs' instruction on them. What's the easiest way to recover that information? (Default 'yum list installed' doesn't provide the repository.) Actually, the hardware initialization where I'm seeing the problem happens in /etc/rc.sysinit. I have added an extra debugging line in there to show the names of all of the misc devices that it loads after audio. One of them is apparently the problem, but I haven't been able to reproduce the problem since then, so I'm not sure exactly which one. Probably, I must admit that I haven't got a minute to get back to that problem. Look for kudzu or discover, read about hwdata. If it's some production system and you are afraid of changes, make a backup copy of some runlevel where runlevel<6 and runlevel>1, copy everything from default runlevel (3) and play with that. NTP and hardware clock

Hi, I had the following problem today. Because of a misconfigured network switch one system suddenly didn't have any network. After a reboot (with the network still unavailable) NTPD refused to start. Most likely because the initial ntpdate failed to work. I find this troubling, because when the network was restored, NTPD could have resumed working (like I'd expect from a true daemon). Now, what was more peculiar was that the hardware clock was completely off. I also had assumed that somehow the hardware clock was kept in sync, but now after rebooting without network, the system clock was skewed. Is there some way to: + Make ntpd run, even when no ntp-server could be contacted + Make ntpd synchronise the hardware clock automatically PS Yes, I know I can run ntpdate from cron or run hwclock to synchronize my hardware clock. But shouldn't this be part of the infrastructure (either ntpd or the initscripts) ? mbox corruption

Running CentOS 4.4, Sendmail... I've been experiencing some mbox corruption this week. Mail clients can't pick up mail and SquirrelMail gives an error.. of which the logs state "File isn't in mbox format". Is anybody else experiencing this? Any ideas about a correction? Cause? Thanks, John Hinton

I've tried acpi=off and nomodprobe - didn't help I will come back to that problem when I will have time, but what I will do is disabling hardware initialization in default init level, and then I will try to play with audio module manually. You might do the same... Boot up from some live cd ubuntu works fine (I'm running it on the same laptop right now) and change init scripts. mpeg4ip (from Dag) vs CentOS 4.4 64-bit?

Anyone else on the list using these tools? I grabbed the latest iteration using yum from Dag's repository, but I get random segfaults on a fully-patched 4.4 system on dual Opteron 275's from some of the utilities. Perhaps, it's some 64-bit vs 32-bit-ism? I'm not much of a programmer (actually, I'm a terrible programmer) so any suggestions would be very much appreciated. :) The machine has otherwise been bulletproof so I'm reasonably sure it's something fishy with mpeg4ip. CentOS 4.3 Screen Timeout

Is there a config file that controls the screen blanking behavior? After a short time period the screen goes blank and you must reenter your password to get the desktop back. I would like to at least extend the timeout for this blackout/lockout behavior for my own convenience. Charles L. transfer data from one hard drive to another

Hello I have an OS installation and data on a 40 gb drive that I would like to image to a 80 gb drive. I don't care if the resulting partition layout on the new drive is only 40 gb making me lose space. I just want to move everything from the older drive because I think it's failing. I have looked at partimage and mondo rescue as imaging solutions but both deal with partitions. CAn someone plz point me to a howto that shows how to image the entire drive incuding mbr, partiton table and data all with one program? I am hoping to boot with a CD to do this while having both drives plugged in. So I think something like knoppix? TIA!

I have a server that frequently hangs while rebooting. I see no errors, but during the boot process it stops at this stage: Initializing hardware... storage network audio The cursor sits just after the word "audio" and I have to do a hard reset to get out of it. This server has no audio capabilities, so I am thinking that I just need to disable the audio stuff so it doesn't even try to load it, but I don't know where to look. -- Bowie

There is no on-board audio. This machine has NO audio hardware at all. Kernel source package missing?

Hi everyone, I've been looking for the package kernel-source-2.6.9-34 (from 4.3) and I can't find it anywhere. In fact, the only mention to it I have found is on the RedHat errata (I also have the RHEL CDs and it is not there either). Where can I get it from? Any mime tool in centos which I can use straight away rather the write a perl script with using some module from cpan? Hello, I'm looking for some package in Centos which will provide en/decoding of mime formats. I have over 1000 outlook mails to process, and it would be great to script that, but centos 4.4 doesn't have a metamail package and I couldn't find anything connected to decoding and encoding of MIME. Anyone have tora running on CentOS 4.X talking to an Oracle DB?

I was looking for a tool to access an Oracle database (the lack of readline support in SQL*Plus is really annoying) and stumbled across tora. I successfully did a "yum install tora" , but I can not access my Oracle database, as expected after reading the following in the RPM description: Tora ("Toolkit for Oracle") is a GUI-based database development program, offering SQL worksheets and a database browser. Please note that the Oracle plugin is not shipped. I can't find any instructions on how to get and/or install the Oracle plugin. Most Google queries I found suggest building tora from scratch, but I'd rather stick with using the RPM if possible. In case it matters, I'm trying to access an Oracle 10g instance that is running on a CentOS 4.4 system. Are there any other tools people use to access Oracle instead of SQL*Plus? I'll use anything that provides decent command line editing (e.g. readline support) and can automatically figure out the size of my terminal. SQL*PLus is pretty brain damaged in those departments. It seems that even when I specify only the packages I want many other packages are installed making the install very large. Any links to guides or example kickstart files would be great. Bear with me, this is CentOS related. :) I have a python CGI that's behaving weirldy on Whitebox systems that've been switched over to CentOS 4 (ages ago, no other problems to speak of aside from this one). I've broken the problem down to a minimal test case... 1. Moving Mysql data directory denied by selinux?

Hi, I'm trying to move the MySQL data directory to /home/mysql like I have done with every other install I have done before but the difference is this time I am trying to have SELinux active instead of turning it off. I seem to need some help in a) Understanding what the selinux failure messages are saying; and b) How to correct the issue I've read the selinux docs and all I got was a headache *sigh* Now normally I just move /var/lib/mysql to /home/mysql and symlink it. Cannot re-make a software raid pair

Apologies if you get this twice - the first one didn't seem to make it... Hi Guys, I have just replaced a faulty Max...woah, wait...this one's a Seagate... IDE hard disk but I cannot remake the software raid pair. The currently running disk is hda and I am trying to add back hdg - both are master drives on separate controllers. I have run fdisk on hdg and created the same partition structure as had and changed their types to 'fd' but when I try and rebuild the array I get: mdadm /dev/md0 -a /dev/hdg1 mdadm: hot add failed for /dev/hdg1: Invalid argument If I look at /var/log/messages, I have: Oct 5 16:04:39 petdoctors kernel: md: could not bd_claim hdg1. Oct 5 16:04:39 petdoctors kernel: md: error, md_import_device() returned -16 >From other postings, this seems to imply the hdg1 partition is mounted but I can find no evidence of this (df or cat /proc/mounts or lsof). 3.x box - lilo - hosed bootloader

Hi Updated the firmware on a PERC RAID card as it was out of date and causing a monitoring error - Everything went fine but on the reboot the box now tells me it cant find a valid boot device - I am thinking maybe somehow the boot block on the logical disk is shot. Can anyone advise me on how to rebuild the bootloader on lilo using a rescue CD? thanks

whacked keyboard behavior CLI

Hi there --- for some reason I am getting really weird keyboard behavior on the CLI (no xfs or anything running). Centos 4.4 yummed up. For example if i type "root" to login, I get "rot" or sometimes "roooooot". Then other times I will have to press a key like 3 times to get a double character. Now at first I thought maybe it was the keyboard, but it seems to work fine when within gnome. In all honesty I think i just have to get a different keyboard, but wanted to see if anyone had any experience with something like this (before I returned it) and a way to fix for the CLI. I have tried the kbdrate command. The keyboard is a wireless belkin with a usb connection. Thanks in advance. d

autoprobe for nVidia 6200 broken

I have the same problem on the install disks and on the Live CD: The computer locks as soon as the Xserver starts. I end up with a blank screen (color varies) with a moving mouse cursor. Nothing else. Nothing appears on the screen. Keyboard and mouse are inoperative. Even Alt-SysRq-R doesn't work. Only way out is the reset button (or maybe SSH, but I don't have another machine handy to try that from). I am expecting you to blame in on "upstream", but you can't blame the LiveCD on upstream. With the LiveCD, I can boot OK by using the VESA driver. The root of the problem seems to lie in the open-source "nv" video driver and my card. The proprietary "nvidia" driver works fine (once it is installed). With the install disks, I am stuck with a text install (and thus locked out of some of the LVM options I need). I have not found a way to override the autoprobed video driver except to use "noprobe", and I have no idea what drivers I need to install to do the install correctly. Wish list for fixes: 1. Fix (or update) "nv" driver so it works right with all 6200 cards. 2. Fix the autoprobe so it uses the "vesa" driver for my card (Gigabyte GV-NX62158D<P>). 3. Create option "xdriver=" on install disks, like there is on video disks. 4. Create option "noprobe-video" and let me tell install disk to use VESA driver. If I can supply any more information to help diagnosis of this mis-probe, I will gladly poke my system if you give me detailed instructions as to what commands to execute. HELP: CentOS box won't shutdown

Hi We have a mission critical Dell rackmount server. I tried to reboot it via an ssh session and it just kept running! That's what I thought, but then I noticed all these pro-ftpd mods for mod_ldap and whatnot, and became... perplexed. Trimming the fat out of a Centos 4.4 Installation

Hi, just to avoid re-inventing the wheel, is there any document that can help me reduce even further a "minimum" installation of Centos 4.4 (BTW can you say 600mb is minimum)? I am in the process of creating a small Centos-4.4-based Asterisk box and I need to boot it from a CF card. Deleting useless packages will help me do what i want. Example: even a minimum install of Centos 4.4 (or Redhat EL for what is worth) includes CUPS, among other things. Any document hyperlink will be more than welcomed!! Hi! I'm having trouble installing CentOS 4.4 to a system with Intel's DQ965GF motherboard. The installer hangs (even with noprobe option). I'm wondering if someone has succeeded with this type of installation? Is the only choice to install the OS in another, older setup, update it and move the disks to the DQ965GF setup? I have this cheap "ENCORE 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter" which comes with its own driver that compiles to 'sundance.ko' and performs bad (30% packet loss) on a fully updated CentOS 4.4 box. This brand, model and driver have worked OK for me on some other CentOS installations, none of which are 4.4. Short of replacing the board, which you can bet I will do, can anybody provide me with some hint?
