fftw upgrade?

I have noticed that fftw has recently been updated from major version 2 to major version 3. It seems the update stems from the mother distribution from RedHat. AFAIK, there are changes to the API in fftw version 3, which may give problems with 3rd party packages. Has anyone got experience with this? And any advice to offer? Calling All FS Fanatics

Now that I've been enlightened to the terrible write performance of ext3 on my new 3Ware RAID 5 array, I'm stuck choosing an alternative filesystem. I benchmarked XFS, JFS, ReiserFS and ext3 and they came back in that order from best to worst performer. I'm leaning towards XFS because of performance and because centosplus makes kernel modules available for the stock kernel. How's the reliability of XFS? It's certainly been around long enough. Update to original issue: There is error messages regarding this problem coming up on the main PC screen: -- Avc: denied [ write ] for pid=6890 com="php" name="temp" dev=dm-0 ino=442565 scontext=user_u:system_r:httpd_t tcontext=user_u:object_r:root_t tclass=dir -- Plus lots more for all the directories and files my PHP script is trying to write to. Anyone know about this issue?? Directories not writable (Apache/PHP)

Hi, I have a new CentOS sever install. I've also installed suPHP to replicate a live server. When I upload file via FTP the permissions seem OK, however the directories copied are not writable?? Any ideas? I have tried chmod 777 and that's not working either. Could is be a suPHP issue? I have 'suPHP_UserGroup GROUP USER' setup in my virtual directory and the user is also in the users & groups. The suPHP log file shows the php file executing OK. Any ideas? Thanks, Mark.

2TB limit, weird mounting issues on reboot

Greetings, I'm seeing some weird issues surrounding the 2 terabyte limit on my 3ware (9590SE, PCI Express model) raid controller. Currently, the raid array is 6 x 500GB disks for a total of around 2.3 terabytes formatted. Looking at the documentation on the 3ware site, the raid card can handle a single partition over 2TB, but it still looks like fdisk fails to create a primary partition over the 2TB limit. I did resort to parted, and it creates a partition over 2TB. And, in fact, I can run mke2fs on this partition, and mount it. I also have an entry for this partition in the /etc/fstab file. However, if I reboot the system, the partition fails to mount from the init scripts. If I comment out the /etc/fstab line, and run a mount command from rc.local, that works; however, the partition is now seen as a 259GB partition, and not the 2.3TB I originally had to start. I have the feeling the partition table is getting hosed on a reboot. Fdisk seems to handle the partition on the raid array just fine if it is a hair under 2TB, and from all the things I've read, it seems fdisk and other disk utilities still have real problems with partitions greater than 2TB (32-bit x 512-byte blocks, etc). I guess I'm shocked. I figured this wouldn't be an issue as of 2006, but it still is..... anyone have any similar experiences? If so, any workarounds other than just stay at the 2TB limit? Hello, maybe you're interested in building an rpm of lm_sensors containing a more recent lm_sensors rpm (latest snapshot 'r4197-20061007'). Then have a look at http://lists.lm-sensors.org/pipermail/lm-sensors/2006-October/018052.html Perhaps there's someone who wants to take over maintenance for building this rpm from the snapshots in some other repo than the base one... (I don't have time for that). problems with LVM and upgrade new kernel 2.6.18

Dear, I have a lot of problems with LVM of CentOS when upgrading to the new kernel 2.6.18. When I have compiled the new kernel and I insert the new rules in the GRUB configuration and when I restart the server I get the warnings that the group volume VolGroup00 not found and then the kernel has a panic situation (Kernal panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init!). This problem I have on several servers, so it is not hardware related but I think CentOS software related. After a lot of searching on the internet I have seen many people with this problem but mostly no solution. At http://www.gatago.com/linux/redhat/20330778.html I read almost the same story and a solution but the solution does not work for me and I see the same situation at http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=5087 I do not know what do to any more, hopefully you can help me with getting kernel 2.6.18 working. Apache and PHP

Sorry for the newbee setup questions, but... Should PHP be already setup with apache on the centos server install?? It's just that I can't get PHP working at all. It's 100% me, I just don't have enough experience. There is already a PHP.ini file, if I add any php modules in apache conf and run httpd -S is says it's already running a php module. I am using vhosts. I did start by trying to use/install suphp as I'm trying to replicate another server but when suphp engine is on I get a 500 error on .php pages. If I take out all my suphp from the apache conf, it trys to download the .php file rather than running it. What's the best log file to trouble shoot this?? Thanks in advance, Mark.

Hi, i have a CentOS 4.4 running sendmail, with two network interfaces (eth0 -> Internet , and eth1 Local Network), from the terminal (SSH) i do telnet 127.0.0.1 25 and it connects to sendmail (i think so), but from another server (external, and so from the same SSH terminal) i try to connect to the Internet IP telnet 146.77.220.236 25 Trying 146.77.220.236... telnet: connect to address 164.77.228.236: Connection refused telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused so i was thinking "it could be the fu...ing IPTABLES" from terminal execute iptables -L| grep smtp and the result is: ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:smtp so , if the sendmail service is up, what could be happen??

lowmem_reserve_ratio?

I have moved from the CentOS 4.4 kernel to a 2.6.16.29 kernel.org kernel due to some vm problems I was having. All has gone well except that my free memory now sits at 150MB. It does not like to go above or below that. Basically, 150MB of the system's memory is wasted. Andi Kleen suggested that I try tuning /proc/sys/vm/lowmem_reserve_ratio. The problem is that lowmem_reserve_ratio appears to be undocumented. Does anyone here happen to know how it works? The most I've been able to gather is that it sets the ratio of dirty to free pages for each of the memory zones. The default on this server is: 256 256 32 Increasing the third number of seems to help, but I would really like to understand what it is that I am doing. Thanks for any assistance, Steve Bergman

HTTP authentication/authorisation for Apache & AD.

I am looking into the best way to integrate active directory user authentication and authorisation in to Apache. So far I have a working LDAP solution that requires the username/password to be entered and a Kerberos setup that is transparent to the user but with no authorisation. Searching the net seems to only find commercial offerings which offer true password less integration between AD & Apache. Is there a open source or inexpensive way to achieve what I want? Resolved. Wow I can't believe it, I spent hours on that! I think the fact that the default site used the first virtual host was spinning me out. I've rebooted the server and also added another vhost and all is good. The second vhost is fine. virtual host on latest centos 4.4

Good morning All, I have a slight issue with apache virtual hosts not working on my newly installed CentOS (4.4). I am very new to Linux, however I have experience with apache etc on 'w1nd0ws'. I've been round and round in the apache conf file and to no avail. Basically if I setup a virtual host the default then looks at it. Also, if I setup multiple virtual hosts they all look at the first virtual host. I'm running the machine inside my local network as a staging server for web design. I then set my HOSTS file on my PC to the ip of the server and then the www.domain.co.uk: Eg: 192.168.1.250 www.testsiteonvirtualhost.co.uk This is what I do on my other apache test server (not CentOS). I assume this should work?? Is there anything other than virtual hosts that would need setting up?? Thanks in advance. Mark.

VPN Server Recomendations

Hi Guys, I'm looking for a VPN solution that will run on CentOS. I've used PopTop with success but some clients have problems at hotels and other firewalled locations. If anyone can suggest something that works well with MS 2000/XP, doesn't require too much tweaking on the client side and is fairly resiliant to various firewall blocking, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Hi, I have this line (10) of code in PHP: include_once('../config.inc.php'); I'm 100% sure that the file config.inc.php is a directory up. config.inc.php is in /var/www/html and the file that calls it is in /var/www/html/classes nevertheless, i'm getting the error: "Warning: main(../config.inc): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /var/www/html/classes/dBInsert.php on line 10 Warning: main(): Failed opening '../config.inc' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/share/pear') in /var/www/html/classes/dBInsert.php on line 10" Permissions and ownership are ok. hi, i have installed sendmail+mailscanner+clamav+spamassassin and work fine, but my telnet localhost 25 is not authenticates. i read a lot of docs but something i don't do it. i have installed centos 4.3 with: sendmail-8.13.1-3 sendmail-cf-8.13.1-3 dovecot-0.99.11-2 mailscanner-4.50.15-3.9 clamav-0.88.4-1.9 spamassassin-3.0.6-1 cyrus-sasl-2.1.19-5 cyrus-sasl-plain-2.1.19-5 cyrus-sasl-md5-2.1.19-5 and i have enabled the next config: TRUST_AUTH_MECH(`EXTERNAL DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN PLAIN')dnl define(`confAUTH_MECHANISMS', `EXTERNAL GSSAPI DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN PLAIN') DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp, Name=MTA')dnl i try the next: /usr/lib/sasl2/Sendmail.conf pwcheck_method:shadow /etc/ld.so.conf /usr/lib/sasl2 i think than this is my problem, i don't know where i put this lines: # SASL2 (smtp authentication) APPENDDEF(`confENVDEF', `-DSASL=2') APPENDDEF(`conf_sendmail_LIBS', `-lsasl2') because, the file site.config.m4 that'snt exist in centos 4. i'm lost. any comments or light in the darkness is welcome, if just i block the access without login to telnet....i will so happy. thanks Roberto.-

Is anyone using a reliable Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP benchmarking suite? There are benchmark software for individual pieces but I hope there is one tool or several small tools that act together to give a picture of how long a request takes from entering Apache, to PHP, to MySQL and then back to the client.TIA!

server disk subsystem benchmarks, bonnie++ and/or others?

Greetings I've searched to no avail so far... there is bound to be something more intelligible out there...??? I am playing with bonnie++ for the first time... May I please get some advise and list experience on using this or other disk subsystem benchmark programs properly with or without a GUI ? Test system in this case is a Compaq DL360 with 2 to 4 Gig DRAM and qty (2) 36Gig 10k drives in hardware raid1 (raid1 default 128k) and a smart array 5304 controller with 128 meg dram The machine screams with this controller... yet I want to compare tests with it to the standard built in smart array controller etc Ive read bonnie++ stuff till I cant stand it no more and am just not seeing the relevance in the end result vectors to something tangible. Problems with 2.3TB disk

Hi Guys, I have a server running CentOS 4.2 with a 2.6.9-22EL-smp kernel. The system contains a 2.3 TB RAID 5 array. There is a 20GB root partition with the remainder of the drive configured one large LVM volume. (/u0) I have installed Veritas Netbackup on the server and am running a few tests. Small backups and restores work just fine. When I run a larger backup (500MB) and store the backup file on /u0/vrts the files within the backup cannot be restored. I thought at first this was a Veritas problem but have also discovered... I cannot do any of the following to the backup file: Use cat, dd or cp to copy the file. The first part of the file aproximately 24MB will copy and then I get the error message: Input/output error Checking dmesg shows: dm-0: rw=0, want=31933816664, limit=4838391808 attempt to access beyond end of device dm-0: rw=0, want=32472792952, limit=4838391808 attempt to access beyond end of device dm-0: rw=0, want=33011769240, limit=4838391808 attempt to access beyond end of device dm-0: rw=0, want=33550745528, limit=4838391808 attempt to access beyond end of device dm-0: rw=0, want=34089721816, limit=4838391808 How do I access the files in question? Possible to change selinux from permissive to disabled without rebooting?

Hiya all, After some problems the other day, I've tracked down a problem I've been having fairly definitely to selinux being on in permissive mode. sestatus shows it enabled and permissive. Is there a way to change from permissive to disabled without rebooting? (have changed config to disabled in /etc/selinux/config, but would rather not reboot atm). setenforce 0 keeps it in this same mode as I belive thats just for enforcing mode only anyway. Have tried googling and best I've seen is "not supported at this time" but wondering if anyone else has more hopeful info. CentOS at FOSDEM

Hi all, FOSDEM is coming and it would be nice if CentOS users and developers are present. FOSDEM will take place at 24 and 25 february 2007. (so mark those dates in your calendar!) I guess what we need is a wiki page about FOSDEM linked from some 'CentOS events' page and then people can start planning and indicating who's coming and what the topics could be. Since the developer rooms are usually limited, it may be useful to work together with Fedora to claim one. (I've send out a proposal to the Fedora ambassador who is in charge of FOSDEM) Things we may want to plan: + the 'hall' presence (usually a table to showcase and respond to questions) - what do we need to showcase CentOS, to attract visitors - volunteers to be present to answer questions (maybe a timetable) - flyers, business cards and posters ? (centos artwork) - how to keep things on a professional level (mostly these tables are pretty crowded and unorganised) + a developer's room - topics and speakers for presentation - topics and moderators for discussions + a social event during the evening - usually evenings are quite dull, you can either subsribe to the official overpriced dinner or, like most, go out and have a good time - the building closes at 18h (iirc) so the evening starts pretty early - there's a nice social event on friday evening to meet with other developers + locations to stay - maybe Belgian CentOS users can offer housing and/or travelling services (picking up people) Who's willing to help ? How to change where yum gets it's data

When I run yum update (as I said in a previous message), I get some errors stating that I have dependencies. One viewer stated that I am getting yum data that is out of date. I am in the process of updating a dozen or so workstations from CentOS 4.3 to CentOS 4.4. I set up a local YUM repository, and have been able to successfully update all systems except for one. Both yum and rpm either hang or core dump on this system. I've done a "yum clean all" and an "rpm --rebuilddb" (after deleting the __db files). I was able to successfully update yum itself, but now even a "yum --version" or "rpm -q yum" hang and can only be killed with a "kill -9 <pid>". Any suggestions on how to proceed? VM differences between CentOS and current vanilla

After running into some VM problems with the new CentOS 4.4 kernel, which I suspect are VMWare related, I built 2.6.16.29 using the FC5 .config file for 2.6.15 and "make oldconfig". It seems to have resolved the "page allocation failure" problem. But I find its behavior to be a bit odd. This is a 4GB system. min_free_kb is at the default, which is 3841. So I would expect Free memory to hover around 4MB. However, instead, it seems to seek out about 150M free. If I do a dd from /dev/md0 to /dev/null, the free memory does drop to around 25MB. But then, as the system is used, it drifts back to... about 150M. Swap varies between 100M and 500M, and buffer+cache runs around 500M. I'm pretty sure that we access enough different data that it should be using some of the 150M free for buffers+cache. Swappiness is set to the default 60. Any comments? Thanks, Steve

Hello Rachid, Module for Intel 3945 is only for kernels above 2.6.15. I'm afraid that you will have to change the kernel (compile your own one) It's funny for me that Intel 3945ABG is so popular and common Linux dists doesn't support that wireless card. I have a problem using yum. it gives me the following error [root@mail1 src]# yum update yum There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/libxml2mod.so: undefined symbol: xmlNewDocPI Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. I partitioned it to the same specs as the 2 ide drives as per the bottom of fdisk -l. Now, trying to go by: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/admin-guide/ 5.9.8.2 Creating RAID Arrays they state the following: Next, it is necessary to create the /etc/raidtab file. This file is responsible for the proper configuration of all RAID arrays on your system. The file format (which is documented in the raidtab(5) man page) is relatively straightforward. Here is an example /etc/raidtab entry for a RAID 1 array: ummm...1.)I think this is part of the old raidtools thang...not mdadm but I am not sure. 2.) there is no man raidtab on this box which is a "everything" install.. so considering this..lol I'm lost. kk, right now...I just formatted all the partitions and (I should have done this before ) I am checking for bad blocks. If it finds some I'll just redo it or whatever I have to do. At one point I was able to mdadm /dev/md0 1 & 2 --add sda1 2 &3 and cat /proc/mdstat would show sda1 2 &3 as in the arrays but then they would not populate. I can't remember but I think I gave them mount points but wait, I was having a hard time finding the proper syntax for that as well anyway, after rebooting...it was all gone. this ain't nice thx John Rose

Not sure what you mean i know what a live boot CD is but would i not have to boot using a centos os to see if i can get the same error. Just incase i did not make it clear before the system does boot centos OK it just pauses and spits out that error everytime. The only other device in the system is the built in fasttrax and of course the 2 intel nics and a rage something video card everything is built in except the SCSI. I am going to see if there is a firmware update to that card somewhere but doubt it will help. I have updated all of the other firmware on the board and chassis. You could > try > moving it about and see what happens. Umm it is a server board with full card hieght riser card plugged in to what i think is the 64 bit slot on the mainboard. Howerver nothing is in any of the slots on the riser card. There is also another halfhieght riser card that has the adaptec SCSI card plugged into it but that is all. > Also, I think that card has an onboard promise controller. Problems with MySQL

Hello, Sorry for posting this here, but i've posted in MySQL list and no one answered. I'm trying to set a password for a user with the command: mysql> set password for gamito@localhost=password('blabla'); but i always get the error: ERROR 1133 (42000): Can't find any matching row in the user table although i'm pretty sure that the user exists. I'm using MySQL version 4.1.20 from CentOS 4.4 This neves happened to me :( Any help would be appreciated. Best Regards, AR

Hello all this is my first post to this list so i would like to than you all in advance for your time and consideration. I am in the process of building a new server and have purchased some used hardware. There seems to be some hardware issuses and i am hoping nothing was damaged during shipping. However i am in contact with intel and we are tring to figure out the exact problem via email. So i have insalled centos 4 from the four CD set and have done all the updates through the GUI. I must say a GUI in Linux land is nice have been working mostly on old FreeBSD boxes none of which have GUI installed. Anyways the above mentioned hardware is this INTEL SR2300 CHASSIS INTEL SE7500WV2 MAINBOARD INTEL (DUAL) XEON P4 2GHZ CPU HP 1G ECC RAM ADAPTEC 29160LP SCSI CONTROLLER PROMISE FASTRAC SOMETHING OR OTHER has nothing attached to it anyhow. I have four Seagate Cheetas 147G 10.6K SCSI harddrive most are firmware version 0006 (been meaning to update this to 00007 before i go to production) HERE IS MY PROBLEM ======================================= When i boot up the machine i get this error off the getgo PCI unable to handle 64bit address space for ========================================================== Everything seems to work fine but i am woundering before i go any further should i be installing the 64bit version of Centos on this machine? Is there a 64 version of Centos? anyways any help or advice on this matter is greatly apprciated. ps if anyone is familiar with this mainboard and hardware setup i would love some insight as to the was the BIOS error event codes that this machine keeps spiting out at me mean.
