Now, what I've done for my own NAS is to install CentOS 4.3 under Server->Minimal. I create a 6GB partition on one of my 3Ware cards for the OS. Then the rest of the space I use LVM to manage what I need. You'll need to install Samba if you need SMB, but essentially building a NAS is pretty easy. I've reached the stage where I can start from bare metal, and have a 5TB NAS up and running in about 30 mins - after the RAID5 array has finished initializing! :) I looked at OpenFiler as well, but was have difficult times getting it to run on my HW. It would simply lock up while formatting drives - not sure why... Since I really don't need a GUI to manage things, I keep things simple and use CLI for everything. HTH Mark

firefox 1.5.0.5 packages

I installed the new firefox 1.5.0.5 packages and had a few issues. I had read a similar post on the nahant list. I would doubt that this is a centos-induced problem. The browser crashed when opening the extensions manager and also with a very simple webmail page. I have reverted to the firefox 1.0.8 packages and these problems have disappeared.

ethernet card name eth1 randomly changes

Removing Dual Boot

Hello, I have a Dual boot laptop that is running XP and Centos,i would like to remove the Centos from the laptop. How would i go about doing this since Centos loaded the grub loader onto the MBR i can not just go and delete the Centos part since grub will still be in the MBR thanks Steven "On the side of the software box, in the 'System Requirements' section, it said 'Requires Windows or better'. Connect-Disconnect DSL on commandline

Hi Folks, I'm using CentOS 4.3 on my Desktop-Computer. I've been switched from Suse: I'm using for Internet-Connection DSL (Germany). It will be started at boottime. But how can I connect/disconnet this connection without using a GUI during the Computer is runnig . Is there a command(-line-tool)? On Suse there was a program called "cinternet" that fits for this task. An other question: I've running a server in a small Network with Suse 9.0. I want to switch this server to CentOS because of stability and long support. Because CentOS is a "clone" of RHEL I've heared in december 2006 there will be a new version of RHEL. How long will it takes until CentOS is adapted to this new version? Is it recommendable to wait for new CentOS? I dont want setup the server two times in the next 12 month ;-) Thx Timothy

I forgot to mention that the problem has nothing to do with the kernel being tainted (due to VMware server). I installed VMware server after being faced with the crashes, to give the Java user a "sandbox" which s/he could crash without taking down the real server. Only then I discovered that VMware server has a memory limitation to 3600MB (I guess because it's not a 64bit application). I see exactly the same crash with a non-tainted kernel. Hello list friends, I got the following error during yum update. How should I proceed to eliminate the probelm? (I thought perhaps to uninstall the .i386 package -- but there are some 15-20 other packages depending on it...) Repositories: dries, kbs-CentOS-Extras, update, rpmforge, base, addons, extras FWIW: the protectbase plugin was added on 2006-07-10. Samba/ldap install script from k12osn perl problems

There has been some very good work by a few people over in k12osn for setting up a SAMBA PDC/BDC environment. Thing is their scripts are for Fedora core 3. There are instructions on how to get things to go step by step instead of use the Fedora-based script, so I gave it a try. Step 1 is to get apt running and everything current. I assumed yum would do instead. step 2 has: *Installing CPAN bundles * Now we need to make sure our perl modules are all there and up to date. We can do this easily by Running perl -MCPAN -e –shell Let it run. Answer “no” when it asks about Manual configuration. Once it stops you'll be at the cpan prompt....type install Bundle::CPAN this will install many perl modules for you. Answer “yes” to any dependency questions. When you get to the question about “libnet”....answer “no”. Once you are finished...hit “enter” to exit....it'll run for a few seconds more and then bring you back to the cpan prompt. For good measure let's type install Net::LDAP (it should be up to date) ======================================= Well I had many messages from the perl -MCPAN and install Bundle::CPAN and the install Net::LDAP just failed. Being how this is rather foreign to me, how do I figure out what really went wrong and how to get it right?

RHN Up2date Cruft: can I dump it?

Got part 1 - xx of back up working, so figured it's a good time to look for stuff to jettison... casually of course. Like paperwork, documentation, ... it's low on the priority list with GB so cheap these days. Anyway, 42M in /var/spool/up2date. Headers and such. I use only yum after my first month or so of CentOS. Can I dump that and similar non- config stuff? Or does it have some potential use? TIA. Bill

Hi, I´m using centos in 4 servers that work as gateway for intranets where i work. I built a particular kernel for my needs but this kernel is 2.4.31. So i neeed to boot this kernel in centos 4.3 and centos 4.2. Can anyone help with that? I know the problem is mainly in modutils because modules cannot be loaded when kernel is loaded. imap flags on uw-imap

I am talking with a client about moving from CentOS 3.7 to CentOS 4.x and migrating their uw-imap to cyrus-imapd but in the process, would want to do a clean install. This is problematic in that if I want to preserve the IMAP flags for all the users INBOX and other mail folders, I would have to move them to another computer and then use something like imapsync (which I've used before) to copy the mail and all of the folders from the old IMAP server to the new one. I haven't a clue where/how uw-imap stores these flags to even begin to presume that I can successfully move them (though I suppose I can rsync the /var/spool/mail and the users folders)...does anyone know where these flags are stored? Wine-Problems

Hi Folks, I'm using CentOS 4.3 and Wine 0.9.16-2.el4.kb installed with yum. My Problem: I get only a glimmering WIN-Desktop. i.e. winecfg starts but not Labels are visible. The Buttons are visible, the Function of these buttons also works. But I can't use wine because no Application is startable. Only a 800x600 Window-Desktop appearce (in green color) - very strong glimmering. And thats all. With kubuntu on the same machine are no problems. But there is a Wine-Version 9.18. In CentOS-Repositories are no newer version. What informations are need more to help me. Bye Timothy

OT: remote power cycling

I'm in a situation where I'm going to have to deploy a rack of servers in an unmanned location in another country. On rare occasions, I've had systems that would not recover gracefully from a warm reboot and needed the power cycled. Years ago, I had such a device from APC, but haven't needed one in a long time since all my locations are staffed. I'd welcome any suggestions from the list. Best regards,

nautilus pegging the cpu

I have a user that is running centos on many machines. At each machine, the users is logged into a common account that is located elsewhere on the network. Meaning that everyone is logged on as user_x and accessing the home directory via NFS. All users are running gnome. On some of the machines, the nautilus process is pegging the cpu. Kickstart from floppy falling into regular install

I took my anaconda-ks.cfg file, cp to ks.cfg and copied to a floppy The isos have been copied to an ftp server. So I had the following lines in my ks.cfg intall url ftp://10.1.1.1// (yes the ftp server's directory is the Centos directory) This is along with all the appropriate network command to get the ethernet setup. I issue the linux ks=floppy (also tried linux ks=hd:fd0:/ks.cfg). What happens is I see the diskette drive spin. The FTP server shows 5 connections pulling 0 bytes each then one of 4197 bytes (the size of the release-notes-EN.html file). At this point I get a monitor and mouse probe then Anaconda starts up X and goes into the standard install choices, starting with how do you want to partition your drive. Obviously it is ignoring my partition instructions in the ks.cfg file. Also I HAVE monitor and keyboard info in my ks.cfg, it should have used that. Appearantly, I need something added to the anaconda-ks.cfg file, but reviewing my notes from when I did thus successfully back in March, I can't remember it. I also tried placing the ks.cfg on the ftp server. But that is 2k in size, so it was never ftped. I see the reference to the text option for kickstart, but that does NOT seem to be what is needed here. Also I seem to recall something about options for the install line in ks.cfg, but have not found anything on that. I continue to research, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

The -excludes=PATTERN would work with --excludes=file.*, etc... There's also the --dry-run option that will output what rsync will be transferring. Melinda, If you have more than one directory that needs to be excluded, it's best to use the --excluded-from=<filename>, one of my exclude files contains: /proc /dev /mnt /sys I use rsync for very large systems, 2TB+ for backups, running hourly, daily and weekly backups. I can back up a directory with numerous files and folders and restore them but I have not learned how to "exclude" a specific folder from the rsync backup that runs via cron nightly. I have tried these: rsync -av -cache/ -e ssh /home/httpd/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/ name@backup13.gnax.net:/fooname/domain rsync -avr - cache/ -e ssh /home/httpd/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/ name@backup13.gnax.net:/fooname/domain I need to exclude these folders on every domain that is backed up: cache/ download/ pub/ I have also read the man pages but am not understanding. New install, yum hung what to do

I just build a new server and once I was able to log on, I did a yum -y update The download (~100Mb) and updates all completed. It is now in the cleanup and hung on 56/77 it has been on that entry for a couple hours. How do I recover from this? close terminal window, open new and then: yum clean ??? Should I reboot prior to the clean?

Corrupt file systems

Hello all: My company builds Linux based web content filters using CentOS 4.3 as the base. We always apply updates to the new machines from the default repositories before deployment. Recently, the last two CentOS machines we built on Dell Dimension 1100s have failed, and the root file system seem to be getting corrupted. An e2fsck tries to recover the journal, but never repairs the machine enough to completely boot up. This only seems to be happening on the Dimension 1100s, as we have several other machines built with the same kernel version and software running on it that have not failed. The machines are Celeron-Ds, 2.4-2.8 Ghz, with either 256 or 512 MB of RAM and IDE hard disks. Does anyone know of any issues which could be causing this? Any fixes?

Centos 4.3/ 64-bit: Java/ Tomcat Optimization

Hi, I have been steadily migrating machines, about 50-70 of them to Centos 4.3, mostly using Opteron Dual Core/ Tyan boxes of Supermicro origin. They perform apache, mysql, tomcat and qmail work, depending where they exist The main reason from the programmer side (i'm a sysadmin/ engineer) is the larger "heap size" to satisfy some of the needs. Since Java/Tomcat applications can also be I/O intensive, i'm looking at things from the systems side to improve on, kernel settings, filesystem choice, RAID configuration, etc. Is there anyone out there in the Centos 4.3 community that's looking at similar optimation interests, and if so, what have you found thus far? Mostly i'm curious about stability, features, bugs and other aspects native to Centos 64-bit/4.3 and running Tomcat/ Java on it. Right now we are at Java 1.4, but will likely make the jump to 1.5 within the next 180 days. So far the developers are happy with the first box I made for them, but I did not customize the kernel, or make any in-depth adjustments, just handed them a larger heap size and they seemed quite happy with that in itself. Clustering, keeping alot of single machines separate, getting one large machine with alot of mem/cpu/i/o capacity, these are all being examined. Just curious what you think, or if you know of any great resources on the subject. I'm in a similar boat wih regard to Mysql, but that's another story, and I have alot of actual research on that to share. -karlski

What I've done is to switch VCs into one of the text based terms while the formatting is going on. Once it finishes, the install goes just like normal. I'm using an AMD Opteron, and that almost always hangs during formatting... I use the normal linux kernel, so not sure if the 586 option would apply to my situation. HTH Mark

Cron not sending e-mails anymore

Hi, I have a cronjob that executes a script that has some echo statements in it and the commands in it also generate output (it copies files, reloads services, etc...). Dovecot Sending Slow down

I moved a hundred or so additional hosting accounts to one of my centos 4 servers. It was doing great before with like 50 accounts. Anyway, since doing this sending email has slowed a lot. I have not done anything with the default settings in dovecot beyond the basics of what services and such at the top.. Server loads are running under 1. Disk IO is generally under 10%, ram no problem with no real swap used. I'm running dovecot in conjunction with sendmail. Anybody have any ideas about what appears to be slow authentication... basically the mail client takes 5 to 15 seconds to connect and send. And this is from within the network. I suspect it is about the same from the outside. Thanks, John Hinton

Because of this thread this occurrence worked out fine, but is there a separate list (other than CentOS announce) that I can subscribe to? I realize that Jim already pointed out that notice wasn't given as usual and I certainly wouldn't want to take anyone to task for it as I'm extremely thankful for everyone's work on the project, but I'd like to know if I'm missing part of the process. Also perhaps it would be good to have the whole testing/feedback repo process spelled out more thoroughly for us newbies. I have used some dev packages successfully and should be providing feedback into the process. I'm not able to do a lot of work in testing things like php5, but I suppose if I'm using it I should at least say "Hey, it's working!" to the repo maintainer. Sorry to belabor this and flames are accepted if it's been spelled out before, but I'd rather ask than continue to benefit from the project without providing the most basic of help/feedback. alex

Newer version of Gnome?

I have 2.8.0 from the base repro. I am running yumex with the Plus, DAG, kbsingh, and jpackage repros. None of which offer a newer version of Gnome. I am talking about a 'deficiency' I am having with gnome, and one responder that does not have these problems is on 2.14.2
