Hi I have got 8 Sun x4100's and i have got the following on there Linux xxxxxx04 2.6.9-34.0.2.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Jun 30 10:32:04 EDT 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I have found an issue where every hour the load rises to 1 sits there for nearly an hour and then drops to 0 again (these boxes are not currently being used) Has anyone seen this before or know perhaps why this may happen? When the load is high there is nothing showing in a top that may suggest a reason. thanks

Setup CCTV with CentOS4

Hi, Need some advice on how to setup a cctv with centos 4.. What DVR card are best supported with CentOS and using what software? I'm currently looking at zoneminder ( www.zoneminder.com ) and motion ( motion.sourceforge.net ) but still don't have a good picture on dvr card. Thanks much to all involved in creating the kernel-module-xfs-* RPMs over on centos.dev. They've helped us get past a couple of xfs issues we were having. Are there plans to build xfs RPMs for the newest errata kernel (34.0.2.EL)? I can build my own for the time being; I wasn't sure (it being testing and all) if these were likely to come out for every errata kernel, or only for some. Trusted Repositories

Hi all, do you know some good/trusted repositories to include in yum's configuration that has packages that are not in the install tree ??? something like linuxpackages.net is for slackware .... I mean, I was looking for a program to watch dvd's (like mplayer) and was thinking if there wasn't anyway to install it through yum, but i didn't find any of them in the main repositories ..... Im a slackware user and was thinking of changing to centos mainly because im tired of having to compile things by hand :-) I still use slackware on servers (it's performance and simplicity r great). System crash on loading gdm revisited

Hello - I've been seeing system crashes similar to this (http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1045) on my Rocks head node. Instead of the standard kernel, I've got a SNARE patched 2.6.9-34 kernel running. Initially I'd used the RHEL kernel source to build it (due to laziness ... it was easier to track down :-), but have just rebuilt with the CentOS kernel source and am now seeing these crashes. Can someone point me to the specific patch that fixes this problem? I'd like to confirm that it's part of my source before looking at other things. Building a new 2.6 kernel

I needed more serial ports that the basic CentOS Version 4 system is built to use so I'm using the following kernel build instructions to build the new 2.6 kernel: http://www.hylafax.org/content/Handbook:Basic_Server_Configuration:Modem-sp… fic_Guidance I believe the procedure is correct but the kernel is not building. I used the "kernel-2.6.9-34.EL.src.rpm file that I found on one of the CentOS mirrors. Here are the problems that I've had so far. 1) The correct architecture to use. Does anyone know which architecture should be used for the Dell 2650 Dual Xeon processor? I thought the correct configuration file would have been "kernel-2.6.9-i686-smp.config". I've also tried "kernel-2.6.9-i586-smp.config" and run into the same problems. 2) When it built the rpm it was named "kernel-2.6.934.ELcustom-1.i386.rpm" but I would have expected it to be named "kernel-2.6.9-34.ELcustom-1.i386.rpm". Was it build using the correct name or might something be misconfigured. 3) When I entered the following command: "rpm -i /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/kernel-2.6.934.ELcustom-1.i386.rpm" I get the following error: "error: Failed dependencies: kernel >= 2.6.10 conflicts with lksctp-tools-1.0.2-6.4E.1.i386" The "kernel >= 2.6.10" does not make sense but I was wondering if it had anything to do with the file being named kernel-2.6.934.... or is there some other problem I should be looking for? All screwed up

I've apparently made a mess of clamav. Tried uninstalling it, and excluded it from dag's repo. Now, when I yum install clamav and clamav-server, I'm apparently missing all the libs, data and so forth. Can someone tell me what I need to do to get this back ? I probably blew all the old stuff away during the update or later, and don't have a clue as to why it's not doing what it's supposed to now. RPM questions about trying to build php-ldap --with-ldap-sasl

Hello CentOS People, I'm trying to build the php-5.0.4-5 subpackage 'php-ldap' from the centosplus repo --with-ldap-sasl. Strangly the stock php-ldap package is linked with libsasl2 et al but the ldap_sasl_bind PHP function is not available which leads me to conclude that it was not built --with-ldap-sasl. To this end, can anyone help with the following questions: 1) The php-5.0.4-5.centos4.src.rpm builds 17 packages. Is there anyway to instruct rpmbuild to only build 1 of those packages? Is there a way to hack the php.spec to only build 1 package? 2) Is there a way to specify a configure option with rpmbuild? I know PHP's configure accepts --with-ldap-sasl but trying to simply pass that as an argument to rpmbuild does not work. 3) Where is config.log? After running rpmbuild it is nowhere to be found. 4) I suspect I will need to experiment with changing the .src.rpm contents and rebuilding the package(s). However, because rpmbuild unpacks the archive anew each time, it overwrites any changes I attempt to make. Is there a way to instruct rpmbuild to build from an existing build dir? Installed plus kernel, kudzu did not see atheros wifi

I took the dive and installed the CentosPlus kernel. I remembered that I could always boot with the old kernel if things went south. But on reboot, kudzu wanted to delete the Atheros config. I told it not to, but.... Would a simple 'freshen' of madwifi-0.9.1-24.el4.at.i386.rpm ? an rpm -qa |grep wifi returns: madwifi-kmdl-2.6.9-34.0.2.EL-0.9.1-24.el4.at madwifi-0.9.1-24.el4.at madwifi-hal-kmdl-2.6.9-34.0.2.EL-0.9.1-24.el4.at

Appended 1 in fstab entries CentOS4.X installs

In my /etc/fstab here is just a snippet LABEL=/1 ....<rest of line> LABEL=/boot1 ....<rest of line> When i installed centOS-4.3 and it has appeared after starting to use any version of centOS4 was that the labels in my fstab were getting the "1" appended to each label... but if the all the labels for my partitions are appended with the "1" and i format and reload they show up in my partition setup during installation and i re-label them appropriately without the "1" and the /etc/fstab doesnt have the "1" appended... its like every other install the "1" gets appended....anyone come across this... if show how can i change it....i know its not like it makes a difference but I just noticed wondering why this happens.

This has been an ongoing issue. I have had this problem before. From what I can recall. Usually after a fresh install, the first cron.weekly to run, this error will show up...Which then each following cron.weekly will not have this error...And also, same as if there is a update to the system...Sometimes during a yum update, no particular one, the cron.weekly error will ocurr. Like i said this has been ongoing, and i recognize this error from years back. I believe it to be harmless and i really wouldnt worry about as I dont.

nullmailer recommendations

Just wondering what people tend to use for nullmailers on their centos boxes (i.e. a minimal outgoing-only MTA)? I guess the obvious solution is a minimal postfix config, but that seems reasonably heavyweight and easy to misconfigure - is there anything lighter floating around the centos universe? Unable to configure squid transparent proxy on Centos4.0

hey friends, I am trying to configure Squid Transparent Proxy on Centos4.0. The eth0 is connected to the Internet and eth1 is for the LAN connection I am testing this scenario with 2 machines one machine (Centos4.0 ) on which squid is running and other machine which is debian is on the network 192.168.2.0. Centos4.0 eth0: 192.168.1.125/24 eth1: 192.168.2.126/24 Debian: eth0: 192.168.2.83/24 gateway: 192.168.2.126/24 (eth1 of Centos) Squid works fine if I manually add the proxy settings in any browser for the clients of network (192.168.1.0) but as I want to configure transparent proxy I have added these lines to squid.conf http_port 5678 httpd_accel_host virtual httpd_accel_port 80 httpd_accel_with_proxy on httpd_accel_uses_host_header on iptables configuration Only one rule is there iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 5678 I can access the LAN servers from the Debian machine but I am not able to access the internet. CentOS 4.3 (Final) : Booting Problem

Hi all, I have a problem with my linux. I updated my CentOS 4.3 (Final) - the software I updated were freetype-2.1.9-1.rhel4.4, freetype-devel-2.1.9-1.rhel4.4, gimp-2.0.5-6:1, gnupg-1.2.6-5, libwmf-0.2.8.3-5.3, mutt-1.4.1-11.rhel4:5 and sendmail. Then I restarted my PC. While booting, the system stopped and issued a message "Could not recognize the image file format for file'/usr/share/gdm/themes/Default/background.png'. When I opened the log file, there was no report that I have made any update before. What should I do? slightly off topic - virtual PC options

I have a this new AMD X2 4800+ x86_64 box that works great and runs centos 4.3 x86_64 like a champ. I have 4 old machines running slackware, redhat 7.3 and redhat 9 and centos 4.3 i386. I would like to take the image of the disk (or something else equivalent) and run some kind of i386 emulation on the X2 box so I can run those old images when I need to and scrap the 4 old boxes. Heat and noise be gone! I have see Xen, qemu, user mode linux, bochs etc... Have others tried to do something like I am trying, take images from older machines and run then on NEW iron? Are there suggested steps somewhere that I have not found? I have tried qemu but I cant boot the image. Just wondering if I am going about this is the right fashion? Thanks, Jerry

Hi All, Just curious if anyone is currently using Xen 3on any of the new Intel Xeon processors that support the VT-x extentions. With the VT-x (or AMD's Pacifica) you can run unmodified guest operating systems...so we are looking into buying a new server to run a few virtual machines of CentOS & a few with Windows. Broken pipe

I updated my x86 machine day before yesterday, and I noticed two things. The clamav user and group was deleted, and not recreated, and when the makewhatis ran, I got a page full of "zcat: stdout: Broken pipe" entries. What gives with the makewhatis and clamav? Was clamav removed from the software? I encountered no errors when the transaction check and transactions were run. I need to do the same thing, and can't get sendmail to email within my domain. I can send emails outside my company, but not to an internal SMTP server. I'm working on a small perl script that will do what I need - inject email into my internal SMTP server, with attachments. I need simple email notification when cronjobs finish... Are we ever going to see a CentOS store?

So I was sending some money off to Firefox today for a hat. And I was thinking, I haven't donated money to CentOS yet. It's just sitting here, running. It's acting as a web server, mail server, mail filter, spam filter, samba and print server and many other things. More importantly, it's done its job so consistently for so long that sometimes I basically forget about it. I run Yum once in a while and otherwise I leave it. For so many years I upgraded every 6 months. Red Hat 6 through 7.1, I think. Mandrake 8 to 9. SuSE 8 to 9.1. Fedora Core 1 and 2. Finally I stumbled on CentOS and I haven't touched my OS substantially in quite some time. So I donated finally today. Just a little. Hopefully more later. But I figured while I was at it I'd say a couple things. #1 - Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I don't think that gets said enough. But to those of you who make this happen, thank you. You almost take it for granted sometimes when you have a distro that is so stable and consistent that you barely have to think about it. Your efforts, while sometimes forgotten because of how consistent they are, aren't forgotten. And thanks to Red Hat as well. :) #2 - We need some CentOS schwag. Shirts, hats, maybe a place where someone like me would happily put down the money for some printed documentation and an official DVD. I know all of that stuff comes with a cost and a price, but I'd love to see it happen someday and would gladly snap up some CentOS gear. Great distro. Keep up the excellent work. Preston

The only time you'll need to upgrade the vm_mod module is if it won't load into a newer kernel. When you run vmware-config.pl, it'll tell you so and prompt you to create a new module. Error on update

Just did an update with yum, and got this error when running the transaction check. Transaction Check Error: package freetype-2.1.9-1.2.2.el4.rf (which is newer than freetype-2.1.9-1.rhel4.4) is already installed Yum then quit. What do I need to do to fix this error? This is a first for me. x86-64 machine. Thanks....... Sam

Sun Fire X2100 & 4GB Ram

Hi folks, I am having issues installing Centos 4.3 X86-64 on a Sun Fire X2100(AMD chip). It works with 2GB of ram just not 4 GB. It works with any combo of the 4 1GB chips I have. It only works with 2GB not 4GB any ideas? Thanks, Bill

libdbi-ruby now?

Ruby 1.8.4 from the c4 testing repo is doing fine so far. But now I need libdbi-ruby. I don't see that in any of my usual repos or in c4 testing and it does not seem to be rubygem'able. Any pointers? Thanks, Steve

Well, it may just work for some, but not for others - I'm sure I'm not alone in sendmail not 'just working'. Using sendmail/postfix/qmail to send simple email from cronjobs is like using a jackhammer to drive finishing nails. Why go through all that hassle of sendmail and it's near daily security problems for such a simple task? My network has mixed CentOS and Gentoo systems, with the Gentoo systems not having sendmail installed. Installing sendmail on those systems would take far more time then coming up with a simple script to do what I need. Take into account running another binary, it's just another service taking up resources that doesn't have to be used. Mark

Ruby 1.8.2 or 1.8.4?

I'm wanting to run Ruby on Rails and I want to do it the cleanest way possible. I don't mind using the rubygems package management for the Rails related dependencies. But Ruby itself, to my knowledge, cannot be installed as a gem. CentOS 4.3 uses Ruby 1.8.1. Rails requires 1.8.2 or 1.8.4. Neither Dag nor CentOSPlus have a later version for RHEL. What's my best bet? An SRPM for a later version of Fedora? -Steve

OpenLDAP rules

Hi list. Maybe this could be off-topic but here I think many have used OpenLDAP to unify yours authentication needs, allowing an unique username and password for all the corporate applications. My doubt is, which rules do you use to split all the user levels so that one user could be allowed to access app A but isn't allowed to access app B (think this about many apps)? Have you been using OU's to split user by app and copying them to each app that them must access? Using posix groups and filtering users by filters on each app? help locating how-to guide for centos, postfix, dovecot, clamav and spamassassin

I have tried searching google (found page 1 only in the cache), howtoforge.com, linuxhelp.net (older postfix document), centos forums, hughesjr forum and centos irc channel. I was pointed to linuxhelp.net and at first thought that the howto in the forums there was it. Unfortunately, I only glanced at the title when I bookmarked it and when I got back home later that evening and actuallty read through it did I realize that it was not the howto document I was looking for. I know hughesjr has alot of other things to do then find a way to repost the howto just for me so I have been trying to avoid directly asking him to re-post the guide somewhere (his site is being rebuilt currently). My last guess is to try here in the hopes that someone here has used the howto and kept a local copy and would be kind enough to share it. thanks.
