only one mysql process in pstree

Hi All, I have two servers, one is centos 4.3 (new) and other is rh9 (old). Both of them run mysql as the primary database server. I installed mysql via the rpms available in mysql.com downloads. Recently when i do "pstree", i noticed that RH9 server shows many mysql children while centos shows only one. Here is the pstree result. (Both of them runs the same version of mysql) server A (RH9 , MySQL-server-4.1.19-0.glibc23 ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- ├─mysqld_safe───mysqld───mysqld───13*[mysqld] and server B (CentOS 4.3 , MySQL-server-4.1.19-0.glibc23 ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- ├─mysqld_safe───mysqld my question is, why mysql is showing one process in centos?. I use same my.cnf in both servers. So i believe it is not a config issue. I believe someone can explain it to me. Regards, Renjith Rajan

Yes, I can get it done with some effort. I understand the non-free aspect of jpackage.org the rpm is created with user/group jpp, so I guess that I have to include: --prefix /home/me/rpm ?

non-bootable dvd image

Hi all; I downloaded the centos 4.3 image onto my linux box and used k3b to burn a DVD iso image. It seemed to work fine. I have an SuSE laptop and I want to setup a CentOS VM via Vmware 5.5 If I insert the dvd and boot the new vm I get 'no operating system found' It seems to be a non-bootable dvd. Is there something additional I need to do when burning the dvd image to make it bootable?

I did burn the image. VMPlayer can only use virtual machines that are already created, either with the full version of VMware WS, or Server. I use VMware server for all my uses now, I've been a VMware WS user since 4.0 days. So far, server has been fine and I can't argue about the cost! HTH Mark

Testing kernel and xfs/netatalk

I recently took over a x86_64 CentOS 4.0 server running an "unsupported" kernel. On examining the box it seems that perhaps it is because of the use of xfs and netatalk. I would like to update the box to 4.3. I think I can do away with the netatalk, but doing away with xfs would require a substantial amount of work. Questions: 1: In reading the archive of this list there was a post regarding the kernel in the Testing repo supporting xfs. Is this the case and if so, would it be a "bad idea" to run that kernel without essentially runnning a test box using all packages from the testing repo? 2: Does the same kernel include netatalk support? It would be easier to leave the netatalk in place if that were so. 3: Should I just bite the bullet and get rid of the xfs? I'm not sure what predicated the choice of filesystem in the first place. Any thoughts/comments would be welcome, Alex Palenschat

resolve problem

Hi, I had install a CentOS 4.3. In etc/resolve.conf, the nameserver i use is the static IP which i was issue by the datacentre. I cant resolve any domain. But if i use a public DNS IP, i am able to resolve. What is wrong with my IP? regards

Wireless USB mouse

Hi I am posting this message again because I am desperate. I have search the net, joined the x.org mailing list and have gotten no where. I never even got a response on the x.org mailing list. I am using a microsoft wireless laser mouse model 6000, and it moves fine but when you move over icons menus etc it will click on it own. I am at the point of switching to Ubuntu which works just fine. I have even changed my xorg.conf file to match Ubuntus for the mouse section and still no go. I have added the plus repositories and updated to the latest kernel and still no go. My xorg.conf file look like the following Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes" EndSection My system is a dual athlon 2.2Ghz (Tyan mpx) 1gig ram 200Gig HD Ati 9700Pro 128Meg USB 1.1 USB microsoft 6000 laser mouse (wireless) pluged into a 4port hub USB Saitek eclipse keyboard. pluged into a 4port hub Thanks for any help Mace

I am trying to use kickstart for automated builds from a DVD. Some of the machines have DVD's drives and some have CDRom drives only. With the CDRom only machines I would like to plug in an external DVD drive via USB and use this to kickstart. The DVD only machines work correctly with a isolinux.cfg as label test kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img ramdisk_size=8192 ks=cdrom:/test-ks.cfg Machines with a internal CDRom drive and the external USB DVD do not find the kickstart so I figure that I need to change the ks=cdrom:/test-ks.cfg to something else. I have tried the following with no success label test2 kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img ramdisk_size=8192 ks=cdrom1:/test-ks.cfg To save me producing lots of coasters can anyone tell me what the "ks=cdrom" should be changed to. Hello, What is the proper solution to the problem below the sig? For a similar issue, Phillip Guenther, procmail's maintainer, at <http://article.gmane.org/gmane.mail.procmail/1623/match=error+writing+var+s…> suggests "chmod g+s /usr/bin/procmail", but I'm reluctant. There are also suggestions that in this configuration the packager must make certain that fcntl locking is in force, but I DUNNO. Full disclosure: postfix is version 2.3, compiled locally. Procmail is invoked with by postfix via "mailbox_command = /usr/bin/procmail". SQLite with PHP5 problem

Has anyone ever installed PHP5 with SQLiteDatabase class support in CentOS 4.3? I have to run a program with this class for a core feature. But unfortunately, both the php 5.0.4 package in centosplus and a SRPM build from FC5 will not work with this class. With the error "undefined class SQLiteDatabase"! And there *IS* the "pdo_sqlite.so" extension in my php.d/pdo.ini file, as well as the "pdo.so" class. But when I testing the SQLite support with: dl("pdo_sqlite.so"); sqlite_open(xxx); new SQLiteDatabase(xxx); The result is the "dl" line will give out a warning showing that the "pdo_sqlite.so" is already loaded. The "sqlite_open" line will give out a message showing that no function such like "sqlite_open". All the solutions by Google cannot solve this. Is there anyone can explain this? Bad Sectors and Linux Software RAID

Hi, I'm writing because I have a RAID1 setup with 2 ATA disks. The 2nd disk has a few bad sectors, and it was kicked out of the array. My question is: is it posible to use a disk/partition with bad sectors with Linux Software RAID? Is there a way to mark those sectors as bad, re-partition the drive, add the partition into the RAID and make Linux Raid detect and not use those bad sectors? It is recent and tells you to forget the pilot-link from your distro and rebuild it with direct USB support: /configure --enable-libusb You are support to blacklist "visor" so pilot can control the usb device. Also newer code.

Routing problem

Hi, I'm building a firewall/router on Centos. I'm using Shorewall but have currently stopped and cleared the firewall rules to isolate the routing problem. My firewall box has 5 interfaces in it but currently only two are involved in the problem. eth1: inet addr:192.168.1.224 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 eth3: inet addr:192.168.202.1 Bcast:192.168.202.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 eth1 is connected to a switch that is connected to a router. The router is 192.168.1.1 and is the internet gateway. eth3 is connected to a different switch. I have another Centos box that is connected to the switch shared with eth3. It's interface is: eth3: inet addr:192.168.202.10 Bcast:192.168.202.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 I want to provide internet connectivity to this 2nd machine routed through the firewall. Currently, I can reach two machines on the 192.168.1.0/24 network (.5 and .3) but I can't reach the router (.1) or anything outside. I'll paste the routing tables from both machines below. Freenx full screen mode problem fixed in 0.5.x?

I sent this last week and never got a response. I take it, then, that no one has come up with a better workaround than ctrl-alt-f? Thanks, Steve Bergman ========= In early June, there was an update from freenx 0.4.x to 0.5.x in centosplus. It broke full screen mode for Linux clients. I am aware of the ctrl-alt-f workaround. But I have quite a few users at branch offices who depend on NX and with employee turnover and all, it has been a source of confusion for us. Has anyone come up with a fix so that fullscreen works without crtl-alt-f? I've searched the freenx/knx list and have found no mention of anyone there having problems. Just the centosplus version. I prefer to continue using the CentOS-provided package, though. ==========

CentosPlus Kernel coward

I strongly suspect that going to the CentosPlus Kernel would be good for my notebook: Not having NTFS support is making moving files from my XP drive to my Linux drive a pain. Suspend is not working. Rather I suspend and never get out of it! My notebook has an internal SD reader that is not recognized. I notice on boot a message that: ide2: I/O resource 0x3EE-0x3EE not free. ide2: ports already in use, skipping probe I suspect this is the SD reader. When I insert a USB MP3 player with an internal drive and SD drive, only the internal drive is recognized. The SD card drive is ignored. And so forth. But http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/centosplus/Readme.txt warns me: You might want to exclude any packages from the [base] and [updates] section of your /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo file like this: exclude=php* kernel* postfix* And I am not sure what to do with this. I have started using yumex on my notebook to 'cherry pick' from CentosPlus (Firebird and Thunderbird) and CentosContrib.

Thunderbird Upgraded from 1.0.8 to 1.5.0.4 and MOZ_NO_REMOTE dead

Since Centos 4.3 comes with Thunderbird 1.0.8, I downloaded the tar of 1.5.0.4 fro mozilla and tried to figure out what to do with it. per http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/releases/1.5.0.4.html#install I was just suppose to copy the files.... In the end I put it in /usr/lib/thunderbird I am NOT a Linux guy so could not figure out how to properly replace /usr/lib/thunderbird-1.0.8 and /usr/bin/thunderbird... So I setup the following script, acct1mail: set MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird -profile ~/data/acct1/Mail & set MOZ_NO_REMOTE=0 and acct2mail set MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird -profile ~/data/acct2/Mail & set MOZ_NO_REMOTE=0 In 1.0.8, running these two scripts (mozilla-thunderbird -profile ...)and have two copies of Thunderbird running. with 1.5.4 the second script gets: Warning: unrecognized command line flag -profile And focus returns to the running copy for acct1. Advice?

I will install CentOS 4.3 and downloaded the driver disk from Dell for RedHat Enterprise Linux 4: Description: Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller 5 Device Driver for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0, X86 & X86_64 I saw a few minutes ago that the driver disk is extracted within /tmp/ramfs/DD-01. Therfore I know that the network is working correct. This works nearly perfect: anaconda loads the driver disk and shows me the text of the file 'modinfo' within the devices list (LSI Logic megaraid_sas Driver ver v00.00.02.03). But when I try to load the driver I can see on the second console (alt+F2) that he can't find the kernel module. Is the installer not able to copy the contents of the disk-image into a specific directory? What is happening when anaconda is loading the disk? help for creating sendmail virtual users

hey friends, I have installed sendmail or it would rather say it comes default with the centos. I am using Centos4.0 and I am trying to configure sendmail with virtual users. I have created few users for my domain. My internal domain (example.com) is different from my isp domain (example1.com) The problem I am facing is that if the user1(a)example1.com sends the mail to the user2(a)example1.com then the mails should not go to the ISP rather the server running sendmail should send it to the mailbox of the user2(a)example1.com but rather it is sending it to the ISP account and from there it is getting redirected to ther user2 mailbox. I have configured the virtualusertable like this user1(a)example1.com user1(local account) user2(a)example.com user2(local account) makemap hash virtualusertable.db < virtualusertable service sendmail reload/restart. Now if the mail for the user2 from the user1 the sendmail should forward it to the user2 mailbox but this is not happening rather sendmail is forwarding it to the ISP server and from there it is gettting move to the user2 mailbox. Second problem I am facing is that how do I configured sendmail to the send the credentials of each user to the ISP account. For example if user1 wants to send the mail to the Internet the sendmail server should connect to ther ISP server with this user credentails (username and password ) and if user2 wants to send the mail to ther Internet then the sendmail should connect to the ISP server with the user2 credentails ( username and password). I have about 25 user accounts and I using sendmail 8.1.13 version. Please let me know if you need any further inputs. Thanks & Regards Ankush Grover

Hi, I'm trying to update a c4 x86_64 system. This fails because off Error: Missing Dependency: libmysqlclient.so.14(libmysqlclient_14)(64bit) is needed by package php-mysql The system has MySQL 5 rpms, build on monk.karan.org. I can't remember/find where I found these packages. The thing is, mysqlclient14 (4.1.14 4.c4) only provides libmysqlclient.so.14()(64bit), which was fine with php-mysql-4.3.9-3.12.x86_64. However, php-mysql-4.3.9-3.15.x86_64 also wants libmysqlclient.so.14(libmysqlclient_14)(64bit): sarastro:/users/henkvl 531% rpm -qip --requires /users/mirror/Linux/centos/4/updates/x86_64/RPMS/php-mysql-4.3.9-3.15.x86_64.rpm | grep libmysql libmysqlclient.so.14()(64bit) libmysqlclient.so.14(libmysqlclient_14)(64bit) Any ideas? VMWare disaster recovery?

I found this in the large and growing list of downloadable vmware appliances: http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/316. I haven't run it yet, but it claims to provide a way to mirror running windows boxes over iscsi to vmware disk images, then allows you to boot that image under vmware as a replacement for the server with little downtime. Strange mouse problems

Hi I asked this question a while back and haven't gotten any response. I have a Microsoft wireless mouse 6000. It works on all the versions of linux I have tried except Centos I have tried version 4.2-4.3 and it has the same problems. I have scoured the internet looking for fixes but I have not been able to resolve the problem. The mouse seems to work fine but as you move it over menus it will click on its own, and at time even on the desk top causing programs to load, menus to pop up etc. Can anyone help me with this. I wan't to start using Centos as my main OS but this crazy mouse is holding me back. I can plug in a second USB mouse in at the same time (wired) and it works perfect. Greg, The latest release of Windows AD (ADR2) integrates a newer version of SFU into the AD schema. We have tested it very successfully using our CentOS boxes to authenticate authorize access to our machines, using kerberos and LDAP. We tried the winbind/smb approach, and the way it handles UIDs and GIDs is less than desireable in our case. It might work for small offices/networks with 50 users or so, but for us, in the case of spreading it campuswide to 1000s of users, it would never do. Also, the degree of UID/GID management is less than stellar since they are enumerated as people log on, and if the machine housing the UID/GID database crashes or you lose the database, getting the exact same mappings upon rebuild may not work - even with backups. Nope, I've changed ctrl+alt+S/L to use different key combos (alt+S/L are used for special polish characters), but have had no luck with the un-auto fullscreen. However I have noticed that apparently spaces don't work in passwords (at least that's what my users are reporting, can't always duplicated it, but a single space as a password does appear to fail). The > output for megaraid_sas is 'loading' and not 'live' (again: for hours). you will need, as Jim pointed out already, the drivers from Dell for this - also, i see you have an issue with the /dev/hda instead of the /dev/fd0 coming up, one workaround for this is to convert the drivers into an iso format and burn that to CD... What Ver / Arch of CentOS are you installing here anyway ? in most cases the installer will ask for which device has the Driver Disk ( you only need to boot with linux dd ). the only time that it wont ask, is when it can only find one device which might contain the driver disk ( perhaps with the noprobe the fd0 is not being detected at all ). if you have network, DD=http://somewhere/ should work as well, from the boot line. I've not actually used one of these machines, so just sharing some ideas that might be worth trying. executable on /etc/rc.local doesn't start

Hi i installed apache tomcat on my server and put the startup on /etc/rc.local file so it will boot up everytime i restarted my server. But it never booted up i still need to run it manually what am i missing? here's my rc.local #!/bin/sh # # This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts. # You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't # want to do the full Sys V style init stuff. ntpdate -u 18.145.0.30 /usr/local/sbin/apache-tomcat-start touch /var/lock/subsys/local my ntpddate seems to start. how do i verify if the program is executed or not? anyway the apache-tomcat-start is link to the startup.sh of apache tomcat and it's on my /usr/loca/sbin. lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 40 Jul 7 18:16 apache-tomcat-start -> /usr/apache-tomcat-5.5.17/bin/startup.sh

vsftpd virtual users not able to delete the files (second time post)

hey friends, I am using vsftpd version 2.0.1 on Centos4.0. I am trying to create some virtual users who can upload,download and delete the files in their particular directories. I followed the below link to create the virutal users http://linuxsir.zahui.net/html/23/43449.htm I have created a user called "tester" and the entries in the tester file (/etc/vsftpd/vsftpd_user_conf/tester) are anon_world_readable_only=NO user_sub_token=$USER local_root=/var/www/html/testing write_enable=YES anon_upload_enable=YES chown_uploads=YES The problem I am facing is that virtual user is not able to delete the files or folders under /var/www/html/testing directory but this user can upload and download the files or folders on /var/www/html/testing The vsftpd.conf file user_config_dir=/etc/vsftpd/vsftpd_user_conf write_enable=NO anon_upload_enable=NO anon_mkdir_write_enable=NO anon_other_write_enable=NO chroot_local_user=YES guest_enable=YES guest_username=apache listen=YES hide_ids=YES hide_files=lost+found pam_service_name=ftp userlist_enable=YES local_umask=022 anonymous_enable=NO local_enable=YES tcp_wrappers=YES How do I configure vsftp so that virtual users can upload,delete and download the files or folders ? Gnome battery and cpu speed control

Vmware server help

Hello all, I thought I'd ask you guys about this one since I've had no luck from vmware forums/kb or google ... I have a centos 4.3 x86-64 (athlon64 with cool-n quiet enabled) with vmware server 1.0 installed and working beautifully with the annoying exception of my guest machines clocks (centos, ubuntu etc) run very fast. I've read the vmware white paper on guest clocks, tried all their suggestions and had no joy. I've tried passing the clock=x parameters to the guests kernel etc to no avail. There is one last hope according to the white paper....install vmware tools and then set clock=pmtr and then use ntp from within the guest to sync the time periodically. Do any of you know a way to get vmware tools installed when you do not run a graphical interface (ie runlevel of the box is 3) ? I cant seem to get it going. Should I download the tools and copy them into the vm ? Any help much appreciated as I'm not cutting over to use production VMs until I can fix this. Cheers, Bards.

LVM repairing or back to regular ext3?

Can anyone point me in the right direction for correcting errors on an HD when using LVM? I've tried e2fsck and indicates bad block. I've tried with -b 8193, 16384, and 32768 and no good. I've found some info about reiserfsck on google, but this utility doesn't seem to be included in Centos4.3. I did find it on my old FC1 box. I am thinking now I really should have went with just regular 83 Linux ext3 partitions. Arrgghhh. And if I want to switch to 83 Linux instead of 8e LVM, whats the best way, or at least a feasible way?
