New member, new OS, old Tao user

Mr. Parsley, the main man at the Tao Linux group, has announced that he will no longer be able to do his thing for Tao Linux. Just recently, I had decided to investigate CentOS 4 before his announcement, and liked a lot of what I saw. Due to the Tao announcement, I have decided that CentOS will "have" to be the OS for my company in the future. Hence, my new membership to this list. I would like any opionions any of you may have to offer, and perhaps, some suggestions on migration to CentOS 3.7 from Tao 1 Update 6. I have usually applied updates only when needed on my current servers. Some cannot be updated due to the commercial applications being ran on them. So my first concern is the lateral migration to make CentOS 3 work on my current Tao 1 machines. The next phase, which would have happened with Tao anyway, would be to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel of the newer release. Obviously, this will be CentOS 4 instead of Tao 4 now, but that will be much later. I apologize for the length of this, but could use the hindsight, or any other vision, that you might have on this switch over. My first thoughts would be that it shouldn't be that difficult, as both are based on the same sources, but things never seem to be as easy as I think they should. Most of my servers are service related (mailservers, web servers, etc), so this will need to be something I think about if there are great differences of which I am not aware. Unfortunately, I do not have spares to start from, so any suggestions should be based on upgrade/migrate versus installation. I couldn't find any "searchable" archives, and most of what I see is 4.3 related anyway, so I am sorry for not doing a lot of homework yet. But I will do my homework. Mr. Parsley has indicated that this is not urgent. I have nothing but respect for his efforts. Thanks for any time and suggestions you may have. Do I need large Cyrus DB files?

While investigating my earlier Sendmail confusion I noticed these files: # ll /var/lib/imap/db/ total 15952 -rw------- 1 cyrus mail 16384 Jan 22 04:02 __db.001 -rw------- 1 cyrus mail 663552 Jan 22 04:02 __db.002 -rw------- 1 cyrus mail 98304 Jan 22 04:02 __db.003 -rw------- 1 cyrus mail 22568960 Jan 22 04:02 __db.004 -rw------- 1 cyrus mail 32768 Jan 22 04:02 __db.005 -rw------- 1 cyrus mail 64 Jan 22 04:02 log.0000000001 The date/time stamps suggest that these files were create by a cron job the day after I installed CentOS v4.2 and have not been modified since. I haven't done any explicit Cyrus configuration, and actually I don't have a clear idea of what mail-related functionality Cyrus actually provides. If it is in use at all on my system it is done as some aspect of the default CentOS4 installation. Those __db files are not owned by any RPM package, although the /var/lib/imap/db/ is owned by the cyrus-imapd package. Do I really need a 22MB empty database file on my system?

Three kernel RPMs at same time and yum error: "sem_post: Invalid argument"

Greetings, I just ran "yum update" on a remote 4.2 Centos install. Then I typed "yum search some package" and got this error message repeating continuously: sem_post: Invalid argument A search for this message revealed only these links: http://www.linode.com/forums/archive/o_t/t_1898/centos4_installations_rpm_d… http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1202 If I run the command to look for duplicated RPMs described in those pages I get: -bash-3.00# rpm -qa | sed 's/$[A-Za-z0-9]$-[0-9].*$/\1/' | sort | uniq -d kernel As a matter of fact, I also get: -bash-3.00# rpm -q kernel kernel-2.6.9-11.EL kernel-2.6.9-22.0.1.EL kernel-2.6.9-34.EL My question is, what is the best, safest way to fix the system? The hack described in those pages doesn't seem (to me) to apply directly to my case. Being the kernel involved, instead of normal packages, I'm hesitant to try something that, as far as I know, may bring this remote server in an unusable state. Any help is appreciated. If it wouldn't be too much trouble ... when a kernel security update notice is posted to the announcements list, would it be possible to indicate whether the centosplus kernel is also susceptible to the security issue being patched? I'm running the plus kernel now, and find myself wondering whether I will ever need to back off to the base kernel because of security issues. Or is it reliably the case that centosplus gets updated along with the base kernel whenever necessary if the upstream has released a security fix?

Suggestions on initial CentOS 4.3 Install packages

Hello, all... I'm attempting to learn Linux (on a CentOS setup) by doing something productive at the same time. I've already installed it twice...once with a "full, just install everything" setup and another by following the Perfect CentOS 4.3 Web Server Setup instructions on HowToForge.com. Though I've had issues with both, I have a lot of patience and time is not a big concern. What I'd like to do is get some advice from the community on a good initial setup for my system by listing out some of the things I hope to do: 1) Set up a test Web Server for development of a soon-to-be-deployed rework of a client's website (I'll host the production site w/ an outside company). 2) I'd like to learn PHP and Apache while I'm reworking the site. 3) Learn all there is to know (ok, maybe just enough to not be dangerous) about securing the server. 4) Develop a program, most likely in C/C++, that can talk with my Company's mainframe and its communications software, either through web services/xml interfaces or directly through some sort of COM / .NET equivalent. The end result would be an application that can run on any Linux box with an Internet connection, giving users the ability to access and modify mainframe data, enter orders, etc. 5) Be able to retrieve email, surf the net, write and read documents (general office stuff) to become both more familiar with Linux apps AND to keep from needing to run to a different PC for these needs when they arise. I know I'll need the X Windows and Gnome stuff, but I'm concerned about dependencies and/or conflicts between the packages necessary for everything I want to do. I certainly want to use the Terminal prompts whenever possible -- particularly for setting up the networking and Apache server -- so that I can begin to learn Linux/Unix. The question really becomes: Can I do it all on one box or am I going to create a nightmare for myself because of overlapping programs that "hijack" critical functions from the web server, or vice-versa? I erased my original install (with everything) because it seemed more important to me to learn what it was I needed and install it manually later on if and when the need arose. Good thinking or...? Sendmail burst of "rejecting connections" - why?

What's the reason for the burst of sendmail complaints below? My CentOS 4.3 server only handles internal mail for my small network. It doesn't handle Internet mail at all, so I guess I can't blame a crack attempt for this. IPTables rules should prevent external connections to everything except SSH's port 22. I've looked through the other logs hoping that some other activity would be seen at this time as well. Nothing. the surrounding entries in /var/log/maillog are perfectly reasonable. As far as I can tell this 14-minute burst of sendmail activity exists in isolation. Can anyone suggest a reason for these log entries? Bandwidth shaper suggestion

Load Balancing

Hi, We are starting a new project, and are trying to decide the best way to proceed. We want to setup a LAMP configuration using Centos, something we have been doing in the past with great success. The question is load balancing. We antisipate the potential for the system to receive 500,000 requests/ day with in the next year. We want to plan for that extra load now as we start the project. What would you suggest for setups for multiple servers for redundancy and load balancing? I have setup MySQL replication and that works fine but what about the rest of the system. I know it is quite simple to setup with windows 2003 server. Would a cluster be the way to go? Ideally we would like 2-? severs setup that are all identical and sharing the load as need be, and if one fails users would notice nothing. I have also thought of just looking for a hosting company that offers load balancing servers and not worry about it but we like to have control. Thanks for any suggestions Mace

Installed today, light use in and out. All looks normal ATM. CentOS 4.3 current (but 1 kernel version to install as of today). AMD Athlon 2200XP using i686 versions. I'm not a heavy user of it. <OT> Waiting to see if I like it better than Evolution or not. Unfortunately, the more it looks like MS Windows product, the less attractive I find it. I'll probably end up blowing all this GUI stuff off and go back to pine or some-such. </OT> Thx for your efforts making the stuff the way you do. ... and smile, even if you can't chuckle a little! ;-) -- Bill

3ware 9550sx on CentOS 4.3 x64

3ware now provides driver disk for CentOS. A couple of months ago, I had to add support for the 3ware 9550sx. The driver disk provided for CentOS 4.1 work perfectly. I now need to add support for the 3ware 9550sx for CentOS 4.3 x64. Although the driver disk is available, it doesn't seem to work. Anaconda just can't find the 3w-9xxx module. This is the same seutp as CentOS 4.1 (which works) so I'm not sure how x64 is different. The driver disk contains the following files: modinfo modules.cgz modules.deppcitable rhdd Any help is appreciated.

libtiff 3.6.1 and Asterisk spandsp

Per: http://soft-switch.org/spandsp_faq/ar01s07.html FAXing with spandsp keeps giving me core dumps. Its crap, isn't it? Actually the crap in this case is probably libtiff. Versions 3.5.7 and 3.6.0 seem reliable. The FAX image handling in version 3.6.1 is broken. All the core dump problems I have investigated turned out to be due to a very old version of libtiff, or version 3.6.1. I am getting crashes of Asterisk on transmitting faxes (not receiving), and have libtiff-3.6.1-10 installed. Does anyone here have experience with spandsp's txFax? is libtiff 3.6.0 available somewhere somehow to try it out?

Hi folks, Have there been any changes to the way ntpd behaves in the past few updates? Reason I ask, whenever I run the ntpq or ntpdc, I immediately get a response of Name or service not known. I know things used to work sometime back, and never saw this kind of stuff. Nothing has changed in the /etc/ntp.conf file, nor has anything changed in the /etc/ntp/ntpservers files. T hanks...... Hi, I cannot take any more arches for official maintenance at current state of the CentOS-project. I'll keep it security updated until end of August, 2006. After that it's not supported (unless someone else picks it up). I am sorry it has to be this way. Installing a package group after the initial install

I recently installed a system using the CentOS 4.3 CDs which is now up and running. Everything is running fine, but I forgot to install one of the "package groups" that Anaconda offers as an option. Is there a way to install this group on a running system using the data on the CDs (i.e., not via a repository)? If not, is there a way to get the list of RPMs that belong to a package group? If I had that information, I could install the RPMs manually. Thanks, Alfred

I have to install a 'custom' 2.6.14 kernel and i have build the kernel and now just trying to build the initrd cd /boot mkinitrd initrd-2.6.14.img 2.6.14 No module mptbase found for kernel 2.6.14, aborting. What am i doing wrong? thanks

Good morning, First I would recommend using different rules for your INPUT and FORWARD chains; it's 100 times easier to troubleshoot and can make things look a lot simpler. Second, I would refrain from posting any external ip addresses on a public forum. I'm not sure about your setup, but usually when you're creating rules such as these, it's a good idea to start off with a default policy of DROP for INPUT, OUTPUT and FORWARD. From a security perspective it's better to block everything and only allow what you're looking for. Anyways, for your rules, I would replace "-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -i eth0 -s 82.201.195.123 -j ACCEPT" and "-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m tcp -p tcp --dport 22 -j REJECT" with: -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp -s ! 82.201.195.123 --dport 22 -j DROP This will drop everything on eth0 going to port 22 from everywhere except the ip address specified. However, it's still easy to spoof an ip address in order to get ssh access to this box. I would really recommend to set all your default policies to DROP though. We would like to set the standard date and time display on our CentOS hosts to the format "yyyy-mm-dd HH:mm:ss", where HH is the twenty-four hour clock. Does there exist a simple setting in Linux/CentOS that permits such a change for a specific LOCALE (in our case en_CA.UTF-8) or is it necessary to build a custom LOCALE LC_TIME file? Kernel errors, resulting in system crashes

Hi Guys, After a chat with some helpful people on Freenode I've included as much information as I can think to about this error, if you need anything else please don't hesitate to ask. I run a webserver (remotely administered, no graphical user interface that i know of - certainly not one running all the time) - in the past few days this error has started to occur, the system dies and needs manually rebooting after each occurence: ---------------- May 21 23:08:01 testmachine kernel: Page has mapping still set. This is a serious situation. However if you May 21 23:08:01 testmachine kernel: are using the NVidia binary only module please report this bug to ----------------- The machine runs CentOS 3 and has been for ~2 Years, a technician at the datacentre ran Memtest earlier today which returned no errors. Hi, I want to connect to a Cisco Pix using ipsec. In RH9 I was able to compile openswan 2.4.0 and use it, but in Centos 3.7 I can apply the openswan klips patch. I noted that the centos 3.7 kernel has a ipsec patch from redhat, does this NETKEY patch works with openswan? What ipsec solution do I have in centos 3.7? Hi, is there anybody running centos3 (el3) with a standard kernel 2.4.32 or newer, because it seems openswan versions > 2.21 don't run with centos3(el3) anymore. But we need the newer openswan versions. System freeze on laptop: power saving daemon doing harm?

Hi, I have CentOS 4.3 installed on my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D laptop (Pentium IV 2.4 GHz CPU). Everything runs just fine, but I have one problem. When I leave the machine unattended for something like an hour or two, my desktop has "frozen". Unable to recovery anything, even [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Backspace] refuses to quit X, so I have to hard-reboot by pressing PowerOn/Off for 10 seconds. First thing I did after install, I deactivated the XScreensaver because it kept asking me for a password everytime I stopped typing for 5 minutes. There must be some other power-saving daemon there that makes the mess, but I don't know much about these. I've heard somewhere that ACPI can cause system crashes... but I don't know where to even start to look. As far as I reckon, I have an ACPI daemon running, a thing called 'irqbalance' (that produces a nice red 'FAILED' on every shutdown) and also lm_sensors. Any suggestions? Niki Kovacs

problem with ldap, sendmail, dovecot

Hi all, I have recently started to use CentOS. I have setup a mail server running centos 4.3 with dovecot, sendmail, and spamassassin. The user information is located in a openlapd database on a separate machine. I am currently seeing connection from the mail server to the ldap server left open which causes some interesting behavior. Sendmail will occasionally return email messages as user unknown when the user exists. This behavior will steadily get worse until the number of connections fill up. When ldap is restarted the process starts over again. If ldap is restarted every hour the behavior stated above is not seen. Email is delivered as would be expected. Doing tcpdump shows connections from dovecot and sendmail that have are in an open state. I find the connections that were is the open state finish their request and close. Occasionally I see connections that were doing dovecot authentication before the reset will change and do a sendmail request then close. When a load was first put to the mail server dovecot authentication would just start (authenticate < 10 people) and lockup. Upon googling I found a article that said to set dovecot to use ldap directly instead of using pam (create the dovecot-ldap.conf file). This I did and the authentication problem appeared to have gone away. I have tried to find information to help solve this problem of the open connection but without success. If someone could point me in the right direction to solve this problem it would be appreciated. Myron Williams

Folding@Home + CentOS 4.3 = success

The Folding@Home client seems to be a wonderful stressor of the CentOS server systems I've been burning in. I've been running two copies of the client on physical dual-core and single die dual-core machines for a few days now. Nary a whimper from the machines and only a slight elevation in temperature (they're 1RU rackmount systems with aggressive/loud fans). In contrast, I loaded the client on a few Win2K (server and workstation) and my WinXP laptop and every single one of them eventually bombed out the client (though without crashing the machines). All were running the 5.04beta client. So I guess it's time to deploy these puppies. (Darn, just when I was poised to break into the top 10 on the CentOS team...heh) Cheers,

CentOS 4 and SATA RAID

There have been several threads about SATA in the past weeks and the problems with it. I'm still not clear, though, if SATA in general is a problem or just specific functionality or hardware. Do I understand correctly that "mainboard built-in" SATA RAID is a nono on CentOS? That I would need a third-party RAID card for this? What about SATA non-RAID or SATA2? Is SATA supposed to work in general or do the disks need to run in IDE mode? Do I generally need drivers from the hardware (mainboard, chipset) vendor or is "normal" SATA supposed to work with the packaged drivers? Kai

LiveCD different sums but file size match

Hello, I just downloaded the very great CentOS LiveCD and have some issue with the sum. when I do md5sum -c md5sum.livecd they simply don't match. But when check the size file with the file size posted by johnny in the announce http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2006-May/012905.html They both match (in 717729792 bytes) Probably I am doing something wrong, just to be sure before burn it. Centos 3.6 - iscsi target issues

Hello, I'm running a server that needs to have a kernel 2.4.xxx. So now I'm running a CentOS 3.6 with kernel 2.4.21-37.0.1.ELsmp. Now, I want to make this server usable for ISCSI, so I started to install the ISCSI target, and the problems begin. If I try to install ISCSI version 0.4.13 from source code I got the following error : The present kernel configuration has modules disabled. Type 'make config' and enable loadable module support. Then build a kernel with module support enabled. This means that the CentOS kernel doesn't allow to insert modules? Sorry for perhaps being a lame question, but I can , and use, insmod all the time. Anyway, later on I found a src.rpm, so I give it a try. The file is http://www.digicola.com/developer/iscsitarget-0.4.12-6.src.rpm , and i i try to rebuild the rpm , with the command rpmbuild --rebuild iscsitarget-0.4.12-6.src.rpm it gives me the following error : error: Failed build dependencies: kernel-smp-devel = 2.4.21-37.0.1.EL is needed by iscsitarget-0.4.12-6 I searched a little and I installed the kernel-devel package.but it still doesn't work. sendmail config problem

Recently my wife received an Email addressed from jdavidson4(a)home.com. When she tried to reply to the original message her reply bounced with ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- <jdavidson4(a)home.com> (reason: 553 5.3.5 system config error) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- 553 5.3.5 home.com.nurdog.com. config error: mail loops back to me (MX problem?) 554 5.3.5 Local configuration error I started to do some digging and discovered that there is no MX record for home.com which is the ultimate reason my wife's message bounces. However what disturbs me is that given the lack of DNS MX record for home.com my Email server is tacking my domain name nurdog.com onto the original domain name and creating home.com.nurdog.com. I am not that concerned about this problem, but for the life of me googling and comparing the config files between my two Email servers does not indicate anthing obvious to me to cause this behavior. mysql : Access denied for user

Hi all, I am having a problem with mysql. I set up root password set password for root@localhost=password('xxxxxxxxx'); set password for root@'xxx.yyyy.com'=password('yyyyyyyy'); after that I tried to log in, but mysql says ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I guess that I had the right password. My friend told me that I might have used a wrong password, so I set up new password for root. However, mysql says the exactly same thing!! ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I was not sure about the error, so I decided to remove mysql and deleted /var/lib/mysql. After that I reinstalled mysql and set up mysql again. However, mysql again says ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I am 100000% sure that I am using the right passward for root I am quite puzzled by the error and need your help. Centos 4.3 and Card Reader

CentOS 4.3 (fully updated, including CentOS Plus kernel). Running KDE 3.5.2 (fully updated from redhat.kde repo). I can't seem to get the OS to recognize my SD card when inserted into my USB card reader. Mepis 6 Beta 3 has no problem with it. DMESG sees nothing happening when the card is inserted. USB-STORAGE module is loaded.

haldaemon crashes system?

I'm in the process of setting up CentOS 4.3 on an old 400MHz K6 and found that the system hangs within several seconds of starting haldaemon. With haldaemon disabled, everything seems to work. >From what I've read, disabling haldaemon isn't a problem, but I thought I'd ask if anyone else has seen similar problems or if anyone had any troubleshooting tips. I found a similar issue at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=178236, although it doesn't sound quite the same. Should I log a bug at Red Hat's Bugzilla? Or at CentOS's bug site? Or is it even worth trying to track down a bug on hardware this old? Josh Kelley
