Hi, I'm looking for a tool that breaks a working system (in one or more ways) with the sole purpose to fix it again. The aim would be to use this tool for several debugging techniques sessions in our local LUG. When I was invited to speak at a local LUG I was wondering what was the best way to demonstrate some of the tools (and more importantly) the way to tackle a problem. And nothing would be better than not knowing what is wrong so attendants can follow my reasoning in trying to fix a problem. I heard from someone who followed the RHCE exams, that they use such a tool to test the knowledge and it would be nice to have something like that in Open Source, if it does not already exist. Yum priorities plugin

Hi All, I have put the priorities plugin online at: http://danieldk.org/code/yum/ This plugin allows you to associate priorities to repositories. Packages from high-priority repositories are protected from being upgraded with packages from low-priority repositories. Instructions can be found in the README file, read the part about "check_obsoletes" with care. Please keep in mind that this is mostly untested and thus beta code. Have fun! -- Daniel

I'm looking at a motherboard with the NF410 (nforce 410) chipset (AUD, VID, LAN on motherboard). Is this chipset readily know by centos 4.3? At some point nvidia changed PCI ID's and I am wonding if the NF410 PCI ID's are known by centos 4.3 before i buy? THanks, Jerry

nautilus ogg preview and sox mp3 support

Would anyone out there be able to confirm (or deny) if ogg audio file previewing works properly in nautilus? I can preview wave (*.wav) files and mp3 (*.mp3) files (I had to recompile sox for this to work), but not ogg files. On another note, I take it that recompilation of the sox source rpm (with libmad-devel and lame-devel rpms installed) is the "right" way of making sox support mp3 format. Am I wrong? Thanks. CentOS Guru's, I am trying to get supermicro's superodoctorII to spit out some numbers for CPU temps but I am failing. It appears I need a module i2c-piix4 but it is not available in the kernel. Trusty old lm_sensors won't seem to work with this darn board. Any hints would be mucho appreciated. Rik

OT: MySQL Help

Hello, I know this is off-topic for this list but I know someone here may be able to help me out of a jam. I ran the following against a table: ALTER TABLE `products` ADD INDEX `idx_products_model` ( `products_model` ); Some things now appear broken but don't know if this was the culprit or not. If I can revert it back it its original state I may be able to determine if it's the cause of some new problems. I did make a back up of the entire database before I made the change on 05-06-06 which I could restore but would lose all data from then til now. Can this index be removed? If so, how? TIA

yum, dag and xawtv

Hi, I'm a newbie with CentOS. Actually, with this generation Linux. I used it back in the middle 90's (Debian and Slackware) but migrated over to FreeBSD. I got tired of the dependency nightmares and wanted a system that "just worked". The FreeBSD ports system did just that for me. I HATE doing the rpm soup thing. RPM finders are nice but I'd rather just use something like the FreeBSD port system to handle all dependency issues for me. But I've slid back into Linux and found CentOS. Boy, have things changed a bit since I was last here :) I have to admit, yum gives me that functionality that I was very happy with FreeBSD - the ports system. It's not exactly the same but I LIKE yum a lot! I am noticing a couple of problems dealing with YUM that I hope you can help me with. I noticed that the default CentOS repositories that came on an install had a lot of the common packages but stuff like audacity and xawtv weren't there. But I figured that there was a repository that did have these. After some web searching, I found about the dag repository. I added the following into /etc/yum.repos.d/dag.repo as stated at http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/apt/FAQ.php : [dag] name=Dag RPM Repository for Red Hat Enterprise Linux baseurl=http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el$releasever/en/$basearch/dag gpgcheck=1 enabled=1 Now when I do a "yum list" I can find lots of the apps that I am looking for. But when I try to install packages I get things like: warning: rpmts_HdrFromFdno: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 6b8d79e6 Public key for libquicktime-0.9.8-2.el4.rf.i586.rpm is not installed I can get installs to happen by changing the line in /etc/yum.respon.d/dag.repo from one to zero on the gpgcheck line. Questions: 1) Is dag a good repository to get me these apps that aren't part of the stock CentOS repository file? If not, which one should I use? I don't need bleeding edge (even two versions behind for an app would be fine). 2) What's up with the gpg failures? Should I be worried? 3) Finally, I'm trying to get xawtv to work. I ran "yum install xawtv" and all seemed to go fine. It found a bunch of dependencies and downloaded them from dag. Cool! But when I try to run xawtv I get: This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.9-34.EL) load_codec_info_from_plugin: dlopen failed for /usr/lib/libquicktime/lqt_ffmpeg.so: /usr/lib/libquicktime/lqt_ffmpeg.so: undefined symbol: avcodec_init Searching for this error has been less than fruitful. I realize this message has several questions in it. If you have opinions on ANY of the questions please feel free to respond. Yum and CentOS have me wanting to go back to Linux. If I can be taught how to use yum to install things "correctly" I think I'll be very happy back here. :-) Thanks in advance. - Damian

ulimit -n was 1024, so I am assuming that is likely the problem. So if I understand your reply correctly, I can do a 'ulimit -n 8192' to increase the value, but that is only for the session? Since I have the program starting at bootup what you are saying is I need to edit these files and reboot, Then ulimit -n should show whatever I set it to below? Battery applet missing Compaq R3000

Hello list, I recently loaded CentOS 4.2 x86_64 on a Compaq R3000 laptop and then fully updated to 4.3. The battery applet on other installs always just showed up and worked, not so here. It is not in the applet choices at all, it is available here on my desktop. I suspect it is something simple I'm missing but I need a point in the right direction. So pretty sure one of my boxes has been owned. Just wanted some advise on what to do next. Obviously, i'll need to nuke the fecker and start over but it would be really nice to find out how they got in as its a CentOS 4.3 which is bang up to date. Cannot access windows shared folder from CentOS 4.3

Dear members, Recently I encountered a problem on accessing windows shared folder from CentOS 4.3. I'm quite wondering why I couldn't access since I already allow all or even switch off my windows firewall. What I did is I just type smb://my_windows_ip and the error message saying that "You do not have the permission necessary to view the contents of "windows Network: my_windows_ip". Did I miss anything when I try to access my windows shared folder? I would like to say sorry if this question had been asked previously..i had try to find the solution on the internet but I fail to find one. Hi guys, i have installed centos 4.3 and i have a problem with Apache. All char like "°", "-", ecc. in web pages appears as "?". This is the variable in httpd.conf: "AddDefaultCharSet UTF-8" I have also set: "AddDefaultCharSet ISO-8859-1" without any change. Where is the problem? Thanks Luigi

Acrobat Reader version for CentOS 3?

Having had a working version of Acrobat Reader, I upgraded to 7.0.5 a couple of days ago (without backing up the previous install, of course). Unfortunately, the acroread command fails with: GTK+ UI Toolkit libraries, ver. 2.4 or greater were not found. The (CentOS 3) standard libraries for gtk+ etc. are installed. Anyone know what is the most recent compatible version of Acrobat Reader for CentOS 3, and where to get a copy? CentOS-4.3 Kickstart 'Boot Failed'

Hello, I'm trying to setup a CentOS-4.3 kickstart. When vmlinuz is loading, a message appears "Boot failed: please change disks and press a key to continue." I am kickstarting via a USB flash drive. From the i386 ISO image #1, I am using vmlinuz from the isolinux directory. I have grabbed the vmlinuz file from a couple different mirrors just in case the one I had originally was corrupt. My CentOS-4.2 kickstart works without any issues and I modeled my 4.3 kickstart after 4.2. Any ideas on what could be causing the boot failed problem? Changing mount point - 4.3

Hi A box was installed with the majority of the free space in /home but i actually want this to be available to /opt. My fstab had /home looking like this LABEL=/home /home ext3 defaults 1 2 I umounted /home and changed the fstab to look like this /dev/sda5 /opt ext3 defaults 1 2 and then mounted /opt. All works fine. My question is, is this the 'correct' way to do something like this or should i stick to 'LABEL' ? I wonder as i'm not sure where the label tag gets set and when i see the box boot now it still references /home when in reality it is /opt on sda5. Is this a really bad thing to do? thanks

Troubleshooting "too many open files'

Hi, Besides file-max and file-nr is there anywhere else I should be looking to solve a C program giving me 'too many open files' problem? (centos 3.4) While the program is complaining here were the values file-max 209632 file-nr 3655 258 209632 lsof | wc -l around 7000 during and about 1111 less after I closed the application. Not Responding To TCP Connections

I have a CentOS 3 box that appears to be having problems where a TCP SYN comes into port 80 for an Apache Tomcat web application, but the rest of the TCP "3-way handshake" isn't happening. When the error occurs, I always see this pattern in tcpdump: * A TCP SYN comes in from the client * ~3.25 second later I get another TCP SYN from the client * ~6.5 seconds after that I get a third and final SYN before the client gives up * No TCP ACKs are returned to the client to continue the 3-way handshake The box is accepting lots of connections on lots of different ports and everything else seems to be working, but I'm occassionally getting these errors on port 80 for the last few weeks (the box has been up for a while). Has anyone else run into anything similar to this? Am I correct in saying that the Linux kernel, not java and/or Tomcat, handles the TCP stack, including the 3-way handshake? If so, getting past the 3-way handshake should have nothing to do with Java or Tomcat... IOW, this issue must have something to do with the OS, right? Suggestions welcome on this strange issue! Yum Update Question

I have asked myself over the years... just what happens during the update process? For instance, the latest updates included updates to php. I'm wondering if apache is restarted or reloaded to read the new php updates? More broadly... if this is done, is it done pretty much for every interrelated update, I guess with the exception of kernel updates? Thanks for all the hard work. Best, John Hinton

My boss wants to put together a Network Operations Center, with a network monitoring server as the centerpiece. He wants that server to have 6 monitors: 4 for network monitoring tools (rrdtool, etc) and two for running commands and the like (ping, traceroute, etc). I know that with the right video card(s) you can have two monitors, but has anybody had 6? Thanks! Ben
