ip_conntrack_ftp fails to load on CentOS 4.3

I have a CentOS 4.3 box that is giving me some serious problem. During the "yum update" from 4.2 -> 4.3 I lost my connection (okay, I accidentally closed the window). I logged back on and did another yum update, and it appeared as though things completed properly. Everything is working fine, up until one of my hosting clients noted that he is now unable to use ftp to update his web site. He could when I was running 4.2. Upon further inspection, I noted that the ip_conntrack_ftp module wasn't loaded. When I tried to insert it manually via "modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp" I get what appears to be a hang in the terminal session. Logging on via a separate session I can see that there are tons of "modprobe" processes being spawned. I can use ^C to break out of modprobe and the processes all die. Thinking that I may borked the kernel install, I dropped back to the 2.6.9-22SMP.EL kernel, where I still cannot load the module. I then removed the -34* kernel packages and reinstalled them, then booted into them. No dice. Just for fun, I cleared all iptables entries, and tried again. No dice. Short of a reload (which would be inconvient, given that the box is 100 miles away) I'm at a loss at what to look at next. Everything appears to be fine. The machine is a dual-Athlon box, SCSI, with selinux in permissive mode. Using "strace modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp" I get the results which are at the end of this message. The "unfinished" entry at the end occured when I hit ^C. None of my other boxes (4.2->4.3 upgrades) have this problem. An "rpm -Va" doesn't present any unexpected results (e.g. Those files noted as changed have been, by me.) What have I missed? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much. The next lines are modules that describe other KS parameters, display config, firewall config, disk partitions and mirroring, and lists of software groups and/or individual packages to install. One VERY IMPORTANT point to remember is shown in the "%pre" script. This is how to make the modules available to anaconda for processing. Just mount the tree where the modules live somewhere on the target system where you can tell anaconda to go read it. Here, I just create a new directory ( /mnt/ks ) and all %include directives reference that tree. Again, all paths must be specified the way that the CLIENT will evaluate them. After that, it's a snap. You can do almost anything you want as far as including other config files, additional pre/post scripts, whatever. fedora directory server (FDS)

Thanks Craig for your soon answer.. I've now the FDS up and running... I am now creating my users in FDS because I want to unify the authentication of my 3 centos servers. BUT, When I create my users in FDS I don't see any option of UID, GID, home directory, etc, so the FDS server return an error and my remote users can't authenticate....... my question is? 1. Can I use FDS to authenticate remote linux users? I mean create in FDS a user with UID, GID, home directory. 2. Can I set up another server with authconfig (Use LDAP Authentication) pointing to my FDS? 2. Does FDS do exactly the same of openldap? 3. Does anybody knows any way to migrate all users from /etc/passwd to FDS? (I know openldap does) 4. Is FDS better than Openldap? Vault files do NOT get security updates. vault.centos.org is where old versions go to die. 4.2+ security updates = 4.3 ============================ ummm ... 4.3 is 4.2 with updates :) ============================ Centos-4.3 works fine with both plesk-7.5.4 and plesk-8. You can change /etc/redhat-relase to Redhat Enterprise Linux 4..... and use the rpms released for RHEL4.. works fine :) atleast it has worked fine on our servers :) ============================ Thanks everyone! troubleshooting kernel crash?

I'm getting kernel crashes on a new machine since it went into production some weeks ago. How can I troubleshoot this? I suspect a hardware problem, but I know too few about the kernel and kernel debugging on Linux to know how I can nail this down with debugging software. Alert icon for yum

Hi all. I have a simple question: CentOS relies mostly on "yum" to keep systems up to date, although I understand that like on RHEL, "up2date" is also available. On my system I've run both KDE and GNOME as Graphical Desktops under X (though I presently run GNOME), and I've noticed that there is an applet called "CentOS Network Alert Icon" (from the "System Tools" menu) which when run appears in a "status area" in a panel to show whether the system needs updating or not. This applet shows the up2date sources, but my question is: Is there any way to have some sort of similar applet that does this for yum. I just think that when we add repos we usually add them through yum. Also when we update the system we usually use yum. Hence I think it would be better to use an applet similar to up2date's for yum so that there is no need to edit both yum and up2date files and there is consistency between when the applet signals a need for updating and the actual "yum update" command. Am I making sense? I found a site (http://fedoranews.org/tchung/yum-applet/) with the source for a yum applet. I know I can build this for myself, but I was wondering what others on this list think and whether such an applet should be more widely available to the general CentOS audience. problem installing centos 4.0 on Compaq Presario SR1722IL

hey friends, Recently I purchased Compaq Presario SR1722IL and I tried to install Centos 4.0 on it but it started showing errors like: Uniform CD-ROM driver revision: 3.20 Combo SOLTC-4836k ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hdc: IRQ Probe failed (Oxfcfa) hdd: IRQ Probe failed (Oxfcfa) hdc: lost interrupt I tried installing FC4 also but same problem persist. Windows 2000 & Windows XP are already installed on the same system that means the Combo Drive is working fine. Then I tried installing SUSE 10.0 with the same Combo Drive and I faced no problem except when it starts "Gnome or KDE" it shows Frequency out of range.. What is the reason that FC4 and Centos4.0 are failing with the installation? What should I do to get rid of the problem ? Thanks & Regards Ankush Grover

Just tried to run a perl script to do some ripping and converting of a postscript file, and ghostscript bombed out with the error message below. Can someone tell me is this really a ghostscript error, or is there more to it than this? If need be, I can attach the perl script that caused the error, but I think it is OK. Running mount in a script.

I am running CentOS 4 and have the need to run "mount -t cifs ..." from within a perl or bash script as part of an application. The application does not run as root. I have been trying to do a chmod +s on a root owned script but that doesn't seem to work. I still get permission errors. I also took a look at sudo but that appears to require a user to periodically enter a password. This would not work for this application. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do a mount from a script based application not being run as root? Thanks for your help. Hi, I have plesk server administration 7.5.4 on my server and am wanting to upgrade to plesk 8. Plesk 8 supports Centos 4.2 and the notes on the 4.2 readme say: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4.2/readme If you know what you are doing, and absolutely want to remain at the 4.2 level, go to http://vault.centos.org/ for packages. If you follow the other link listed in that doc it goes to the centos vault with this text: http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=34 There is a CentOS Vault containing old CentOS trees. This vault is a picture of the older tree when it was removed from the main tree, and does not receive updates. It should only be used for reference. I will need to keep my server os at 4.2 because that is the only one plesk supports so according to those 2 articles and staying at centos 4.2 will the "vault" files be the one to use and will they get security updates? Processes stuck in futex()

I'm occasionally seeing processes on my CentOS 4.3 system get hung up, which strace reveals to be waiting on a call to futex(). Previously I'd only ever seen this in mysql on RH9, and google searches for explanations haven't turned up anything useful. Any pointers to where I should look? Is this another one of those things where using the default SMP kernel with a hyperthreaded processor is just a Bad Idea?

I'm going thru the documentation for pptpclient located on the pptpclient.sourceforge.net site and am referencing the Fedora Core 3 how-to. The docs refer to installing libglade and libxml and when I do so with a "yum install libglade libxml" no packages are found for installation. In looking at the installed packages I find libxml2. Is libxml2 adequate for libxml or would it be neccessary to install libxml also? Thanks for any help list members may be able to provide.

dag repo and perl dependencies naming

Hi I'm trying to install amavisd-new from dag repo on centos3. In the spec file perl dependencies use parenthesis: perl(Digest::MD5) it also uses '-': perl-MailTools The problem is that only the second notation is available: perl-MD5 I know this is an old problem. Is this only centos related? Is there a workaround? Do I have to modify the spec file? I'd like to use yum... Regards

I'm gonna remove the user name which is actually 1 character shorter than 'username' ... I have a client with a somewhat long domain name... myhomelenders.net I am using LDAP and the primary mail address is in an ldap attribute called 'mail' and that is working fine. I also use an ldap attribute called 'mailLocalAddress' for storing aliases and those have been working fine until now. using raw ldapsearch, it works fine when I... ldapsearch -x '(mailLocalAddress=username(a)myhomelenders.net)' but apparently the chop comes after 23 characters because when I send mail to the username(a)myhomelenders.net... I get an email rejection for username(a)myhomelenders.n eporting-MTA: dns; srv1.myhomelenders.net X-Postfix-Queue-ID: 4C7F8F8CD0 X-Postfix-Sender: rfc822; root(a)myhomelenders.net Arrival-Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2006 18:25:02 -0700 (MST) Final-Recipient: rfc822; username(a)myhomelenders.n Original-Recipient: rfc822; username(a)myhomelenders.net Action: failed Status: 5.0.0 Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; [myhomelenders.n]: Name or service not known and I get the email in 'user.et' (the balance of the name that remained from above) which was delivered by cyrus. I'm going to start this message with the CentOS list serve... I am looking into building a Web Server Farm using CentOS. Has anyone done this before? Could anyone offer some ideas I need to look at or in to? The Servers will be independent of each other and not SANS attached. That's the part that is throwing me off! I will be using some sort of load balancing, too. My ideal setup would be to have 3 servers. 2 servers in the main data center and 1 server in a remote location. The remote location would not be load balanced, but the data would need to be replicated. Could anyone offer any advice or suggestions on how to pull this off? I've spent the past 3 days looking. I've found different ideas, but each have their uniqueness! What are some actual real-case scenarios? Thanks, Todd

How to find your IP Address

Ok guys a quick newb question. I have been reading up on the Red Hat Enterprise 4 for dummies book along with installing and playing with the configurations of Cent OS 4. I have yet been able to find any information on how to find out what your IP address is. I have it set to use DHCP from our Windows server and I looked under the network card configuration settings but can not find any command or GUI place that will show your IP Address. When I go to a windows machine and try to ping the Cent box by its name it cant find the host. Now I know I can go into the DHCP server but I need to learn how to find it on the Linux box. Another question has to deal with Samba. I set up samba using the GUI interface then ran service smb start command to start up samba. The book says I should be able to browse the network with a windows machine now and find the linux box but I am unable to. Any clues why its not showing up on the network?

I had the same problem with 4.3 on one system out of 4 I recently built. I checked iptables, /etc/sysconfig/networks , /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (and eth1) , /etc/resolv.conf etc etc. What was strange is I could ping , nslookup etc from that system but could never ssh to it. Same error message your posting. I ended up using a mondorescue disk from another system that worked fine and then fixed the configs for the different network configuration. If you do find out the root cause of that please share it as it bugged me not actually finding out why the same configuration process on 4 systems failed on 1 system (all the same exact hardware as well). Problems with SSH

Hi, i have 2 linux machines on a corporative network, from my machine(Local Machine)i Have ssh acces to the serer typing ssh user@nombreservidor But when i try to connect from the server to my local machine i have a message "name or service not known", it doesn`t matter if i do it ss user or as root If i type ssh user@iplocal i have a message "no route to host" it already verified that both systems(local and server) have SSH running by typing service sshd status, and the response is "ssh is running (pidxxxx) The OS in the local machine is CentOS 4.3 in the server is WhiteBox 4 Anyone have aan idea? please, I need help Thanks ----------------------------------------------------------- Sign up and get your 30GB webmail at www.30gigs.com now!

/sbin/ifconfig -a Samba: 1. check the logs in /var/log for helpfull data. 2. iptables may be your culprit. by default it will block incoming smb connections from your windows systems to that linux system. So you will need to modify /etc/sysconfig/iptables to allow the ports and protocols into your linux server otherwise they will just get dropped. You can probably browse from the linux box to a windows network (as iptables allows outbound connections from the system by default) but not vice-a-versa. Your next question may be how to modify IP tables to allow in smb connections. man iptables cp /etc/sysconfig/iptables /etc/sysconfig/iptables.orig vi /etc/sysconfig/iptables add some entries like this (i am unsure of the smb ranges needed so I am using 135 as an example although I think the range is 135-139 and 445) where x.x.x.x is the workstation you want to trust the connection from. When I go to a windows machine and try to ping the Cent box by its name it cant find the host. Now I know I can go into the DHCP server but I need to learn how to find it on the Linux box. Another question has to deal with Samba. I set up samba using the GUI interface then ran service smb start command to start up samba. The book says I should be able to browse the network with a windows machine now and find the linux box but I am unable to. Any clues why its not showing up on the network?

Netconsole - how do I tell id a driver offers polling?

Appologies in advance if there is an obvious answer to this. I'm experimenting with netconsole. When I try to insmod the netconsole module it complains that eth0 doesn't support polling. Any idea where I can find a list of supported NICs? How can I workout if a NIC driver supports polling? Many thanks Daveh

smux service (port 199)

Hi, when I run a nmap localhost I see that port 199 is open for the smux service but when I check the services gui in runlevel 3 or 5 I don't find it. It's also not in /etc/init.d/ At the moment almost everything is inactive except for some well known services like httpd crond etc. but mux is still there. Does anyone know how to colse this service? regards, ivago

Hi, First, we need to mount stage2.img and alter its contents. copy this file from the cdrom to somewhare in your computer say # cp /media/cdrom/CentOS/base/stage2.img /home/mydist First, we mount the image using mkdir /mnt/anaconda mount -o loop /home/mydist/stage2.img /mnt/anaconda Now we need to copy the contents to a directory where we can alter the files. We used tar to package the contents of the directory, and then untarred them where we could work on them. cd /mnt/anaconda tar -cvf /home/imtiyaz/stage2.tar . cd /home/imtiyaz mkdir stage2 cd stage2 tar -xvf /home/imtiyaz/stage2.tar With the contents of stage2.img in an editable directory, you can now alter the images used by the installer located in usr/share/anaconda/pixmaps and the images used in the installation slideshow in usr/share/anaconda/pixmaps/rnotes. You can also edit the text in the left sidebar, which are in HTML format, in usr/share/anaconda/help/[locale]. Where is clustat

I thought I've installed the clustering tools, but when I attempt to run clustat, it says it doesn't exist. When I installed the suite, I ran: yum install -y GFS GFS-kernel-smp magma-plugins fence dlm dlm-kernel-smp gulm cman cman-kernel-smp CCSD is running and when I "cat /proc/cluster/nodes", I see my three nodes. Does anyone see the package that I missed for clustat? Thanks, Todd

SCSI install to IDE install - help

Hi, a customer has a Centos installation on SCSI disk (aic7xxx), there are some programs that he no longer have the installation media (some accounting stuff). Due to the SCSI disk going bad we must tranfer the installation to some other disks. SCSI disks are very difficult to find here and must be ordered (and wait about 45 days to arrive at the dealer). Can I clone the SCSI disk to a IDE Disk with a clone utility such as Acronis TrueImage and then rebuild the boot loader? The SCSI is 72gb with the bootloader, one swap partition and the second partition is / The customer will maintain the exactly same server, we will only change the storage media. some other things to consider?
