Hello, I am getting a new computer and am going to need to move the files from the old to the new. What is the best way to do this? Should I install CentOS from scratch on the new computer then move the directories I need? How do I maintain permissions if this is the best way? TIA Eddie

I need to install a newer version of rdesktop than the one that comes with Centos-4. I can download the latest version..where do i tell the rdesktop installer to install to so the kde links to the right file? ALSO I can install it to my home directory..then how do i point the kde remote desktop link to the new rdesktop file? Any pointers/suggestions? How many of you have tried out the KBS CentOS Fedora Extras rebuilds? In my case i enabled his misc and extras repo on a test machine and - it proceeded to install apt that nuked the dag and centos list files. - It also installed a very new version of wine, wine-devel and wine-tools that broke my wine apps. the centOS rpms from winehq work like champs. The winetools 0.9.3 rpm as linked from the winehq website is the real thing that can install IE, rather than the cheap fedora imitation. DVD RAM drive and CentOS 4

I just picked up a Sony DRU-820A, 2 layar, DVD+-R, +-RW, RAM drive. It seems to be ok in the normal modes, but I'm not sure what I need to due with the RAM usage. I have some DVD-RAM disks. I put one in on the off chance it would just work, but it said it wasn't formatted. What do I need to due to use the this in RAM mode. I didn't find anything that seemed to be aimed at this. Hello All I need to install Python 2.4.2 for installing Zope. What is the location for python that should be given in the ./configure --prefix directive? /usr/lib is for python libraries..isn't it and thats where I find most of python installed except for the python binary in /sbin Should I uninstall the normal python installed in Centos 4.2 by default before installing from source? Can someone guide me about how to create a source rpm for Python & Zope and where to find the spec files? Please note that this is my first attempt at building rpm of any kind, so please give me links accordingly. I would like to maintain latest stable release of Python & Zope and if possible, build their rpm and contribute the same to centos contrib repo, since I will be building it anyway. Please guide. I will also need someone to test the rpm, before releasing into contrib, if it is wanted. With regards. Sanjay.

run 64 bit exe on 32 bit system library

I suspect I cant do this but is there a 32 bit library to load (on a 32 bit machine) that will run 64 bit exe's? My suspition is no. I was hoping though there is a library that emulate anything the 64 bit instructions etc would be doing. Thanks, jerry

When I simulate disk failure by unplugging sda and restarting Centos. Grub fails in stage 1.5. What is the correct way of simulating harddisk failure in RAID-5? If I unplug the other drives, it manages to boot ok. I'm running a server recently installed with centos 4.2. It's running the kernel in the subject line, on an PIII 866Mhz with 512mb ram. The system is running basically two processes: 1) ssh to remote system, receiving a stream of bytes piped into 2) gzip the stream, write to disk file The system is slow, relatively (866Mhz cpu) and the network is fast (gigabit) so the limiting factor should be CPU. And it is. However, at times, the system gets into a 'weird' state where instead of using about 85% user/ 15% system, it goes to 50% user and 50% system. Now 50% system time for this load is ridiculous, and as I said before, most of the time it is 85/15 and only occasionally get's 'stuck' in 50/50. Process run away

Hi, I just found that one of my centos servers was running at 100% cpu and had used up all the memory. I checked system monitor and was not able to find the culprit, I restarted the server and it seems fine now. Does anyone know of a simple way to have the server email me if the cpu load is at max for x amount of time. I am not sure how long it was running like that, I have not checked it for a while. I'm trying to install CentOS SPARC on a Netra T1, but it boots from disk and i want to know how to enter the bios and set up that boots from cdrom. The other problem i have is that when the Netra T1 is booting it gets stuck when makes a NIS request, and says "Time out for NIS to come up". I know this problem doesn't have relation with CentOS but if somebody has installed CentOS SPARC on a Netra T1 before, i'd appreciate the help. --------------------------------- Relax. Yahoo! VNC into active session

Hi all, Can I VNC into an active session? I mean user can see what we do in their screen. Right now the /etc/sysconfig/vncservers is: VNCSERVERS="2:userku" VNCSERVERARGS[2]="-geometry 800x600" I have vncpasswd for userku and restart vncserver. Then, can I vnc from another pc into the active session on the userku PC? Samba doesn't mapping groups

Hi, I was trying to setting a user with administrative access using the net groupmap add command and mapping the Domain Admins group for a local group with the users I want. After this using the command net user "username" /domain in a winxp machine the Domain Admins group doesn't appear in the list of groups of this user, only the Domain Users group. What could be? SERVER DOWN, boots to "GRUB"

All that's seen on the screen is the four letters ''GRUB". I'm assuming that grub needs to be reloaded into HDD master boot record. (?!) What's the easiest way to do this? Iptables hangs at shutdown

Hi all- I have a Centos 3.6 server in production that hadn't been rebooted in quite some time. I was finally onsite today and took the chance to reboot into the most current kernel, but the box hung while "stopping iptables". Some Googling led me to one or two reports of systems hanging while the iptables initscript unloaded the modules. Has anyone else encountered this? I haven't seen anything in the archives to suggest this is a widespread (or even known) problem. Because this locks the system where I can't perform any other activities, it's near impossible to troubleshoot. Is anyone using sk98lin Gigabit Ethernet adapters under CentOS 4.x? The version of the driver that ships with CentOS 4.x kernels was too old to support the onboard NICs on some Intel server boards that we recently got, so we installed a newer driver using DKMS. However, we're having problems finding a stable driver to use: the first version that we tried (7.09) gave a kernel panic when I ran ethtool, and the latest two versions (8.30 and 8.31) periodically lose network connectivity and give kernel errors similar to the following: KERNEL: assertion (flags & MSG_PEEK) failed at net/ipv4/tcp.c (1293) UDP: bad checksum. From 10.0.0.1:53 to 10.0.0.2:58409 ulen 118 UDP: short packet: From 10.0.0.20:138 191/20 to 10.0.0.255:138 I saw that skge is recommended as a replacement for sk98lin, so I tried recompiling a skge module based on the patch at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=167768, but it failed to recognize my card. (I may have compiled it incorrectly.) Can anyone recommend a version of the sk98lin driver that works reliably? Alternatively, can anyone recommend a good Gigabit NIC that's recognized by a stock CentOS 4.x kernel? Thanks. Josh Kelley

Hi, I have a Samsung printer(ML-2010) connect to my centos 4.2 machine by usb. I want to share this printer with 3 windowsXP mchines in my LAN. Although i have install driver for the printer on all machines, use samba to share the printer, from the windows machine i still have an error"access denied, can not connect to printer" or something similar. In Security Level, i have checked "trusted device: eth0, sit0" , is port 631 automatically open? How do i know that my problem is not caused by the blocked port? I suppose this could be considered off-topic, but having finally finished setting up my new workstation I thought I'd brain-dump some things that I had to work out how to do. I had a devil of a time googling for some of this stuff, and found lots of forum threads etc. where some of the same questions I had went essentially un-answered, so I wanted to put these tidbits out in a place where they'd be archived and searchable. In no particular order ... I never did get my second onboard NIC working. The ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard is otherwise working fine, but the Linux drivers aren't able to differentiate the two identical nVidia NICs; I can only use one or the other. Hopefully that'll change soon, but I'm not holding my breath. Networking was broken briefly when I copied "LOCAL: ALL" (among other things) from my old workstation's configuration into /etc/hosts.allow, and "ALL: ALL" into /etc/hosts.deny, because "LOCAL" does not match "localhost.localdomain" which is the first name for 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts. Sendmail refused connections from the local machine (e.g., from fetchmail) until I realized what was going on. Be sure to list localhost.localdomain explicitly in hosts.allow. I wanted to start some ssh tunnels automatically when I log in. I tried putting the ssh commands directly into the Gnome "Startup Programs" (via Applications -> Preferences -> More Preferences -> Sessions) but that had the effect of causing logins to hang for 2+ minutes after putting up the splash screen. Eventually (see next item) I guessed that the session manager was waiting for the application to open a window, which of course ssh never will. The fix is to use an iconified terminal window as the "Startup Programs" entry, so that the session manager sees a window appear and knows that the application has started, and run ssh in the background from that terminal. E.g. xterm -iconic +hold -e ssh -N -f ... The icon appears briefly, then vanishes when ssh has backgrounded itself. If you need to typa a password and gnome-askpass fails to put up a dialog, omit the -iconic option. Also, it's important that the priority of this startup item be set to a larger number than that of metacity and gnome-panel; I chose "45". Speaking of the session manager ... I have some applications that run as root that need to open windows on the X server. This was failing with: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified On my old workstation I'd fixed this by linking root's .Xauthority file to the one in the logged-in user's home directory, but that didn't work on CentOS 4 because something (I still haven't figured out what) sets XAUTHORITY in root's environment to point to a randomly-generated file name, even if "su --preserve-environment" is used. The fix for this (which no one got right on any of some dozens of mailing lists/newsgroups where Google turns up references to this error) is for root to run: xauth merge /home/otheruser/.Xauthority However, even though the application can now open its window, it still issues a complaint: Warning: Tried to connect to session manager, Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed To eliminate that message, root must also run: iceauth merge /home/otheruser/.ICEauthority Note that this must happen after the session manager has started up. I built and installed an RPM for an older calendar application (ical) which showed up in the Applications menu in three separate and inappropriate places. Turns out that it had placed its ical.desktop file in /etc/X11/applnk/ instead of /usr/share/applications/. That's about it; I had some other things I was going to mention, but on writing them down I decided they were too specific to my personal environment to be worth mentioning. There are still a few things I have questions about, but I'll leave those until I either get them solved or run out of other places to inquire.

centos roadmap?

Hi, I was looking for the roadmap for Centos 4.x. Is the release schedule somewhere on centos.org end if not, when can we expect the release of Centos 4.3? But: # mii-tool eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok If I force eth1 to 1000 with ethtool, I get no link and then it autonegotiates itself back to 100. I can't even get them to talk at gigabit speed if I connect both machines together with crossover cable!
