After a few minutes it drops out of graphic install and the last thing on the screen is "Checking root filesystem". It then sets there FOREVER. Any ideas? Samba Error when using gedit

Hey dudes, I've got a centOS 4.2 (clean reinstall) workstation and a Samba mount in my home directory where "c:\uploads" is a XP Home directory mounted as ~\uploads in my home directory. The file 'letter9feb.txt' exists in 'c:\uploads\fd\complaint' which i created from the smith box. I cannot save the 'letter9feb.txt' as it says its being used. Error "Generic error" while copying "/home/smith/.../letter9feb.txt". (When trying to use Nautilus) Could not save the file "/home/smith/uploads/fd/complaint/letter9feb.txt". Could not create a backup file. Kinda CentOS related so bear with me. :) We have little legacy perl app on an old RH 7.3 box I'm trying to migrate over to a CentOS 4 system. Entry server hardware

Hello, I would like some advice on a SATA RAID controller that is able to work in a 32 bit/33mhz PCI slot. I have been looking for a while but all I can find is 64 bit cards that cost over $300. I just need it to mirror 2 drives, and of course work in Centos 4.2. I am not looking for RAID 5 or anything like that. All the cards I find that would do this are fakeraid. Also, has anyone used the SATA Iomega Rev drive in Centos 4.2? Mine does not show up but it works on a default load of Suse 9.3...? Any help would be great.

Adding HP7310 networked printing support

I have an HP7310 network attached. Looks like it uses port 9100 I want to print to it. And from my Asterisk at home server. I see that I do not have the "Printing Support" group installed. I guess this would be the first set. Then I see http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/hplip_readme.html Is this driver included in the Centos repos? There are a number of caveats. Of course, for me, the biggest is need to do a make. I bet the AAH build doesn't have what that will take!

I am having a mail server problem where the mail to one domain is being sent to the wrong server. Caching DNS question

I have caching-nameserver-7.3-3 installed on a Centos 4.2 system. The named.conf file which comes with the install has the following options: options { directory "/var/named"; dump-file "/var/named/data/cache_dump.db"; statistics-file "/var/named/data/named_stats.txt"; <comments snipped> }; However, when I look in /var/named/data there is nothing there and for that matter I can't find the dump-file or statistics-file anywhere on the hard drive. I didn't think there was any post install config for caching-nameserver-7.3-3. Is there something I am missing regarding the basic caching-nameserver install that I don't see a dump-file and/or statistics-file? -- Paul (ganci(a)nurdog.com)

how to find cause of disappearing files

Hello....here is an odd problem for me. I have a Centos 3 server which has software installed that creates its pid files in the /tmp directory. I am not sure which script on the server is being run that completely clears the /tmp directory except for directories starting with periods. Can you guys think of a way for me to monitor these pid files and immediately log which process deleted these files as soon as it happens? thx...Bob.

SCSI RAID monitoring

I'm looking to buy some new high-reliability servers (mail server, cluster head node). I'll be doing a hardware RAID1 mirror w/ a hot spare, and I'm trying to decide between SCSI and SATA (albeit SATA w/ WD Raptor drives, so the price difference isn't as big as it would seem at first). I'm very familiar with 3ware's monitoring tools for their SATA RAID cards, and they work very well. What monitoring tools are out there for SCSI RAID cards? For that matter, what are the preferred SCSI RAID cards supported by centos 3 and/or 4? LSI MegaRAID is the one I'm leaning towards, but I'm open to suggestions. I appear to be attacking others

It looks like my CentOS 4.2 box is attacking other people with some type of ftp attack. I got an email from somebody saying they were being attacked by my IP address. Further investigation /var/log/messages shows a whole bunch of sshd attacks on me, none of which appear successful. I'm running ethereal right now and I can see that my system is doing some kind of ftp attacks on others. I've think I've stopped the outgoing attacks at my firewall, but how do I proceed from here? 4.2 install w/250GB raid arrays won't boot

hi! raid 1 arrays: I already have 2 systems running this same raid1 config. 1 sys has 2 120 gb 1 sys has 1 120gb and 1 200gb but matching the raid partitions this system here that is giving me fits right now has 1 250gb and 1 200gb. I tried it w/a new 250 gb for the 2nd drive but the same results. Will not boot. in druid, when I am config. the raid arrays, I always create the boot partitions in hda1 and hdc1 and make them primary...maybe I am doing wrong by giving them 200mb instead of 100mb but I do it in the other 2 raided systems I run and no probs. I then create the sys partitions: hda2 and hdc2 lastly, the swaps as hda3 and hdc3 ........................... grub: here's what I did/do and here's the results: linux rescue chroot /mnt/sysimage /sbin/grub-install /dev/hda ...the complaint/result: /dev/md0 does not have any corresponding drive I have tried: /sbin/grub-install /dev/hda (as a stab in the dark) it gives the same result /sbin/grub-install /dev/hdc also produces the same result I have done the following: dropped to grub # grub grub> root (hd0,0) result: Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0xfd grub> setup (hd0,0) result: Checking if: "/boot/grub/stage1" exists ....no "/grub/stage1" exists...yes "/grub/stage2" exists...yes "/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists...yes Running: "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0,0)"...failed(this is not fatal) "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0,0)"...failed(this is not fatal) "install /grub/stage1 (hd0,0) /grub/stage2 p /grub/grub.conf"...suceeded done I messed w/cmos...oh, enable/disable S.M.A.R.T. A safe starting point is "yum clean all", but sounds more like your mirror list is pointing to a server that is not available, has dropped CentOS, or changed the path. Check all the servers in your config files. I like to use a local mirrorlist and/or hand-configure nearby and fast mirrors with baseurl=... in the /etc/yum.repos.d/*.repo files. question on software raid-1

I have a system that is RAID -1 configured as /dev/md0 is /dev/hda1 /dev/hdb1 /dev/md1 is /dev/hdb3 /dev/hdb3 it seems as though /dev/hda has failed.... I have another disk (identical model) that I can replace hda with. I know about the commands fdisk to repartion and raidhotadd /dev/md0 /dev/hda1 and raidhotadd /dev/md1 /dev/hda3 (to be ran after the system boots). BUT... how do I now get the system to boot since hda is not there to boot... I can certainly execute the fdisk and raidhotadd after it boots... How do I get it to boot. The hardware is a D865 intel motherboard with 2 seagate 120G drives. Thanks, Jerry

Unable to update

Greetings! I am running a Centos-4 box and since January 17, I have been unable to update. If I run 'yum update' from the command line, I get error messages about being unable to locate a mirror while trying to obtain primary.xml.gz. If I run up2date from the GUI, it times out as it is trying to access the update file for firefox. Other than the problem with updates, this box doesn't seem to have any trouble accessing Web sites and there is not a proxy server in use on our network. Another box on my network that is running Centos-3 does not appear to be having the same problem. I would appreciate any hints on where to start troubleshooting this problem. Paul Paul M. I think I saw where up2date is going away (perhaps browsing FC5 new and changed items) "yum update" will ask me if it wants to proceed. I have not seen a way to not have the prompt for Y/N? Is there a way to not prompt and just go ahead and do the update. Thanks, Jerry

Mount LVM

Hi guys, sorry if this is trivial, but I have been googling a couple days and already compromised a test disk trying to figure this out, so I thought it is time to ask for some advice. I have a disk that comes from a clean and working CentOS4.2 install, and I am trying to use an external usb to ide converter to mount it on another workstation with CentOS4.2. I am trying this to better understand how LVM works, in the case of a future disaster/recovery scenario. Simply trying to mount it: mount -t ext3 /dev/sdc2 /share/ mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc2, or too many mounted file systems fdisk -l shows /dev/sdc1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/sdc2 14 7476 59946547+ 8e Linux LVM and in fact, /dev/sdc1 is automatically mounted. vgscan reveals only my current volume group Found volume group "VolGroup00" using metadata type lvm2 (mount --> /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 on / type ext3 (rw)) lvmdiskscan --> /dev/sdc2 [ 57.17 GB] LVM physical volume ---> This being the volume I want to mount lvscan detects only the volumes on my system ACTIVE '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00' [112.34 GB] inherit ACTIVE (root) '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01' [1.94 GB] inherit (swap) If I run "vgchange -a y" --> 2 logical volume(s) in volume group "VolGroup00" now active, the ones in my system. I went through LVM Howto, and also tried to follow a few "mount/recovery procedures" with the only result of compromising the other test disk. I think this the problem is that the vg on my system has the same name of the one on the external usb disk, but I am not sure of what result would have running vgrename, vgcreate or lvcreate on the data, so I'd rather wait for some advice. Any help appreciated

mkinitrd trouble

I've just updated one machine from 4.0 to 4.2. The trouble is, the new kernel doesn't want to boot (2.6.9-22.EL, also tested 2.6.9.22.0.2.EL). Usually, manually recreating initrd file solved this problem in the past for me. But not this time. Playing around, I also noticed that if I rebuild initrd for the old kernel, then it also fails to boot. The only way to boot it up is using the original initrd image created when the system was initally installed. The machine has two volume groups, sys and backup. The sys volume group contains logical volumes with operating system, the backup volume group just holds some temporary application data. Looking at what goes on the console during boot, the only difference between what happens is initialization of LVM (nash script in initrd image). With the old one, it reports it has found two volume groups (backup and sys, in that order), and then that it actived all volumes in both of them. With new initrd images, it reports it has found two volume groups, but activated only volumes from volume group sys. The root file system is part of sys volume group (so its logical volume should be active). The backup volume group contains file system with some data, and it's presence (or non-presence) theoretically shouldn't affect bootability of machine. However, booting still fails with root file system not mounted and of course kernel panic since it can't find init. I've attempted doing several things (vgchange -a y, vgcfgbackup, checking the files it created, vgcfgrestore, then recreating initrd images). But nothing helped. I guess all needed device driver are correctly loaded, since it was able to detect volume group (and both volume groups are on the same RAID controller). Running mkinitrd in verbose mode looks fine too. Hi Got a call from a customer who has a mixed OSX and MS shop. They are having issues with a new fileserver box i installed for them. All seems well but when they copy files with long names onto the box it fails with "Filename too long" or something like that (i'm relying on what the customer is saying to me) They are using a G5 with Panther i believe to so this so anyone seen this before as i never have and i have setup many mixed shops in the past. thanks!

Hi all, sorry for the OOT. I've been trying to setup a sms gateway for a couple of sleepless nights now. I use Itegno 3000 USB gsm modem, gnokii sms manager, and playsms a web interface for sms http://freshmeat.net/projects/playsms/ on FC4. Here's what happen: 1. Using minicom, I can send sms 2. Using xgnokii (x interface of gnokii), I can send sms 3. Using playsms, I CANNOT send sms, it got stuck in playsms queue with pending status. 4. This is interesting: using Sony Ericsson K700i cell phone + gnokii + playsms, I CAN send sms. Neither using gnokii from livna nor source solved the problem. Has anyone try setting up a sms gateway using itegno + gnokii + playsms? Could you pls give me some hints? Swap & logout

Ran into something tonight I've not seen before. The system has been up for 20 days, and has not missed a beat of any sorts, even when getting beat on at a decent level. What my concern is, tonight I attempted to log out so X would restart, and from the looks of all the stuff on the screen (which never did reload gdm) was chock full of statements where swap had been exhausted, and processes were being killed off. The only way I was able to recover was to login via another machine and kill -9 the gdm process. Could not access any of the VT's at all. What I'm wondering is if swap is not being released, rather if processes are not being moved out of swap when the load decreased. From the looks of top top - 21:20:59 up 19 days, 23:07, 5 users, load average: 0.22, 0.24, 0.17 Tasks: 146 total, 1 running, 145 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu0 : 1.7% us, 0.3% sy, 0.0% ni, 98.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si Cpu1 : 0.7% us, 0.0% sy, 0.0% ni, 99.3% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si Cpu2 : 0.0% us, 0.0% sy, 0.0% ni, 100.0% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si Cpu3 : 0.7% us, 0.0% sy, 0.0% ni, 99.3% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si Mem: 2055916k total, 1199952k used, 855964k free, 50464k buffers Swap: 1052216k total, 64020k used, 988196k free, 781740k cached There seems to be plenty of swap free, even tho the cache is still OK. Perhaps there is some tuning or tweaking I could do? The main processes are the wx model, which uses anywhere from 1.2 to 1.4G of memory, plus all the normal stuff you find on a workstation. Just wondering what the consensus is around the list for a usable groupware product. It doesn't have to be as "fancy" as the integration between Outlook and Exchange...just simple calendaring, ToDo lists, document sharing, contact manager, etc. Has anyone tried opengroupware? poweroff when returning from standby

Hi, I managed to make my Packard Bell EasyNote to standby (suspend to RAM), but I still have a problem: when I press the power button to return from standby, the system is restored but is immediately entering the poweroff procedure ... Pressing "I" for interactive start-up does nothing

Greetings, I'm trying to convert a Dell Inspiron 210B laptop into a sandbox using Centos4.2. The install went without incident but rebooting (starting) the first time the system hangs at "Initializing storage network" then says "disabling IRQ# 11" then goes no further. I've tried to press "i" and "I" to enter into interactive start-up (so I can check the log file) but I can't get interative start-up to turn over. Ideas? Thanks, Michael

Standy (suspend to RAM) problem

Hi, I have a Packard Bell Easynote B notebook with CentOS 4.2 on it. I activated the standby option and it seems that entering the standby is OK (in a few seconds the display and hdd are closed, the power led is clipping). But when I try to restart the notebook, the hdd sems like it reads something, but the display remains blank. Also ctrl+alt+backspace or ctrl+alt+del don't have any efect. Did any of you succeded in making standby working with 4.2? Thanks, Adrian

Also, each topic should have referred books, urls and materials about it, in order of reading too. Here I ask you for some experienced help, to conform this, or some reference point where start on. The way you consider it must be done. My plan to learn is make a review of reading from start to end of it to get an overall idea of the topic (as a whole), and then go increasing the level of specification in each topic on each review reading. So the topics' ordering and the topics 'em selves are very important. Could this be right, any suggestion at this point would be highly appreciated too? So my starting list, 1. Introduction to Internet: The bases, and general ideas of where we are standing. At this point I started with Douglas E. Comer's Internetworking with TCP/IP Vol1 2. MythTV on Centos 4

I'm starting a project to build a MythTV box for my living room. Anyone else currently working with MythTV on CentOS 4? Here are some of the gotcha's I've worked through so far: - I was originally planning on using KnoppMyth. But their CD appears to be only for i386. Without realizing it, the P4 CPU I picked is one of the newer ones with the x86_64 extensions. It won't boot i386. Thus, my plan B is going with CentOS4 x86_64 and installing from the ATrpms collection. Here's someone who's already doing this: http://umich2.com/archives/category/linux/mythtv/ - I picked up a cheap Radeon 7000 with TV out. Wrong! Various posts seem to say that the TV Out functionality is not supported by the X.org radeon driver. It *does* work with the vesa driver though. I just don't know if video and DVD playback will work with the vesa driver. Does anyone know? - The stock RedHat kernel does *not* have irda support enabled. I downloaded 2.6.13.2, enabled irda, and my motherboard's irda port is found and configured. We'll see if I can get it to work with the IR adapter in the nMediaPC case I bought. Kirk Bocek

Does anyone know how to get yum to ignore updates of a particular package? We use nagios 1.2 and yum wants to update it to nagios 2, how ever that breaks nagios when it does that. I want it to skip the updates of nagios and related packages till we work out the problems. Peter

Unable to mount SMB drive

I have a Windows Server 2003 system I'm trying to back up to a Linux host. when I access the share with smbclient, I can "see" the files (`ls` returns a list of files, etc) smbclient -U shareuser //server/sharename password But, when I try to actually mount the drive, I get "permission denied" errors trying to access the drive. (EG: using `df`) Running the following command takes about 10 seconds: smbmount //server/sharename /mnt/servername -o \ credentials=/path/to/credentials,ro I've also tried an alternate format: mount -t smbfs -o username=USERNAME //server/sharename /mnt/servername Same results both ways. Adding Bind to a workstation build

I need a DNS server in a test environment, so I am adding Bind to my notebook build. I first did: yum install bind rebooted yum update rebooted Now I see named as a service I can start. But when I go to /var/named to edit the files (btw, all I want to do at this point is to fake out a FQDN expected by a piece of gear), none exist. And I doubt that if I start named it would be properly chrooted (as it was on a server where I selected named as a service to install). So pointers? where do I go from here?

Centos-4.2 and ACL's over NFS

Hi has anyone managed to get ACL's working on an nfs exported Filesystem with Centos-4.2 (server and client)? The work fine on the local filesystem (ext3) and the upstream vendor docs tell, that nfs acl's should work (by default).
