Screwed up my iptables firewall

I have a server that I screwed up iptables on. Now when the server restarts it locks up trying to apply the firewall rules. How can I remove the rules (set to all ACCEPT) in a linux rescue mode or knoppix or other way of getting to the file system? Any suggestions how to fix this? Thanks, James

installed freenx server on CentOS 4 server installed nxclient from nomachine.com on workstation so far so good. following directions from web site... http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/ where I tried both /etc/nxserver/client/client.id_dsa.key and /var/lib/nxserver/home/.ssh/client.id_dsa.key copied them to my workstation and then used the 'import' function in nxclient to import the keys and try to connect and always get the following detail when I failed to connect... NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid: 21106 NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files NX> 200 Connected to address: 192.168.2.1 on port: 22 NX> 202 Authenticating user: nx NX> 208 Using auth method: publickey NX> 204 Authentication failed. what's the trick - there is obviously something very important missing from the web page. upgrading 3.6->4

greetings - I'm trying to upgrade a centos 3.6 box to version 4. I tried to do an upgrade using yum but that failed and now the Cd installer is not letting me upgrade either. Here's what I did: following the howto, I tried to do the upgrade using yum. I installed the GPG key and upgraded the centos-release and the centos-yumconf packages. When I tried to upgrade yum package I ran into dependency problems. I downloaded and reinstalled the version 3.6 centos-release rpm. Then I downloaded and burned the CDs. I boot from the CD but I don't see an option to upgrade. I get to the installer screen that asks for the type of installation (desktop, server, workstation etc) but I see no option to perform an upgrade. Is the upgrade option hidden somewhere? did the installer not detect my centos 3.6 system? When I tried the yum upgrade, did I do something to make the installer think I have centos 4 installed (like the GPG key)? Any help is appreciated! cheers Mike

Forcing CentOS to load Ethernet Card

Hi All, I changed ethernet card, and chose to retain the config for the previous one, and now when booting, get a mac address is different igonoring, msg or something to that effect, and upon booted, doing a ifconfig shows nothing for the new card. HP NetServer LC2000r and LH6000r install woes

hello folks! i've got four HP NetServers, two LC2000r and two LH6000r. the CentOS 4.2 ServerCD can't see hard drives on any of them. each machine has a HP NetRAID controller; the LC2000rs have a NetRAID-1Si and the LH6000rs have an Integrated NetRAID. each controller has three 9GB drives, two mirrored and one hotspare. each machine boots ok (the LC2000rs need "linux noacpi" or they complain about being in a weird power management state and panic), each loads the megaraid driver, but none of them can see any volumes. fixes i have already tried: 1) on the LH6000rs i have disabled "Smart IRQ" reallocation; on the LC2000rs i have disabled "Reserve PCI Bus Numbers" as described in this document: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/HP-HOWTO/hp-hardware.html#AEN792 these fixes have made the megaraid driver stop complaining about IRQ conflicts or routing errors. 2) i have tried switching each NetRAID controller from I20 to "Mass Storage" mode; no change. 3) i have tried manually adding the i2o_block driver; no change. has anyone encountered similar problems with this hardware? better yet, has anyone resolved them? any other ideas? do i need to do anything to the logical volumes on the NetRAIDs other than create and initialize them? i'm currently downloading the full CentOS install media, in case this is some sort of deficiency in the ServerCD. thanks, steve --- If this were played upon a stage now, I could condemn it as an improbable fiction. - Fabian, Twelfth Night, III,v

Ext3 filesystem access after downgrade from v4.2 to v3.6

I need to downgrade a system from Centos x4.2 to v3.6 (x86) due to performance problems with Arkeia Network Backup and AIT-4 tape drives. The backup database is stored on a v4.2 created ext3 partition. When accessing this partition after the downgrade, Centos complains on boot that fsck.ext3: Filesystem has unsupported feature(s) (/dev/sda5) *fsck: Get a newer version of e2fsck! [fail] If I comment the partition out of /etc/fstab the machine boots as normal and I can manually mount the filesystem. My questions are: If I use the v4.2 ext3 filesystem on v3.6 I am likely to corrupt the data? And what is the best way fix this problem? Do as it says and try and upgrade e2fsck or is there a better fix? Thanks Dean.

Self-signed certificates

Hello, I am trying to create a self-signed certificate for a sub-domain. Creating the certificate is not the problem. I used cacert.org to complete it. When I made the certificate, it was for the sub-domain but the certificate for the top-level domain is the certificate that appears. In the <VirtualHost> section for the sub-domain, I have pointed to the sub-domain key: SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/httpd/conf/ssl.key/subdomain.key. This is how I made the key: openssl req -nodes -keyout private.key -out subdomain.key Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Arguments to continue using it

Hello, This afternoon I received the new that my institution, in the main direction, is planning (for political reasons, I don't know which one??) migrate to Debian. I have a hotted conversation with my boss cause I've been working on CentOS during near a year and half. I explained it that both distros just implement the protocols that are standards, that could be installed a web server in a Debian Box or in a CentOS Box, both can use apache and generally the service will be stable in both, without a lot of differences. Also that the use of each one is indifferent, just a matter of user's comfort and that means, it will take a long time to change to other, because not only will be the time in planning services, but the time in learn a new way of do it too. Note: if I said something wrong correct me please. The arguments they gave to me were, what happen if redhat close the base packages, they don't have to release them, but just to the buyer, and we can't buy the distro, there are others distros like debian that is totally free, and without dependencies of proprietary industry. I really struggle a little more to defend, CentOS and my comfort on it ;) , but have not solids arguments about that issue, I really never worried about it. Would some of you explain me this issue, or point me somewhere to read?. I'll really appreciate that.

Specify sending machine from mailx command line?

When using "mail" (from the mailx package) to send mail from the command line, can I specify the sending system name? I want to mail the occasional status message to my personal e-mail account from a server machine. Something like this: echo "New IP address: $new_ip_address" | \ mail -s "DHCP - $interface addr change" myname(a)myisp.com When I attempt to send mail from machine server.mydomain.lan my ISP sees incoming mail from "localhost.mydomain.lan [127.0.0.1]" and bounces it as being blacklisted. Is there a way to submit an acceptable name to my ISP's mail server from command line e-mail? Thanks.

Jim, Not really, the couple pieces of hardware that I have actually work fine with centos 4.2 - however - when I then want to connect something out of the ordinary like a monitor that does 1366x768 it is not supported in the current driver. X11 build

Morning... I have a package that I think wants to compile against the X11 source tree. http://openchrome.org - its a snapshot from there.... Anyway the command it tells me to run is: xmkmf /usr/src/xc make make install This is to build a updated X graphics driver... However when I do this I get errors as there is not /usr/src/xc (no surprise) I did then "up2date xorg-x11-sdk" however now I dont know where the "xc" directory might be. Have I not done the right steps yet? Thanks for any suggestions. Jerry

I used the following command ./configure --with-x11libdir=/usr/X11R6/lib64 --with-codecsdir=/usr/local/lib/codecs make make install It erros with the requested audio codec is not found. Customizing desktop systems

My company is now in the process of rolling out enterprise desktop systems (mostly rhel3 since we have some commercial software that is not quite ready for rhel4). Most of our users (ca. 120 workstations) are using RH9. I've developed a simple, extensible set of kickstart post procedures and firstboot procedures that provide a quick way to image new systems, but one thing is missing. I haven't found a good way to deliver a common desktop image for KDE or Gnome. We want to provide each new user with a common set of desktop icons, for example. I tried using a preloaded /etc/skel, but that doesn't work very well. There are too many individual hidden files and directories where userid is imbedded. I would need to search and replace userid in a lot of files. Has anyone in the group tackled this sort of problem, and would you care to share your methods? What I'm trying to avoid is having to configure each new desktop manually to have a common look and feel. -- Collins Richey Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code ... One major reason for this has to do with RHEL's (and therefore CentOS's) policy of backporting. People look at a version number and assume it's old or has holes. They don't know that the fix they want has already been backported and patched into the current distribution release of the app. The combination of ignorance (intentional or otherwise) of the backporting policy and the desire people have to combine gentoo/solaris/unix logic to a particular distribution leads to problems. Each distribution has its own way of doing things. According to the man page for htdbm: NAME htdbm - Manipulate DBM password databases SYNOPSIS <snipped> htdbm -l [ -TDBTYPE ] <snipped> -l Print each of the usernames and comments from the database on stdout. yet when I execute htdbm I am finding that the output of the command is going to stderr not stdout. I have proved this by trying the following two commands: $ htdbm -l -TDB passwords > junk; wc junk Dumping records from database -- ./passwords Username Comment <snipped> 0 0 0 junk $ /usr/bin/htdbm -l -TDB ./passwords >&junk; wc junk 28 37 1034 junk Note in the first command the output still goes to the screen despite the stdout redirect with ">". In the second command line I added the "&" ito redirect stderr to the file. This time note that there is no htdbm output to the screen and that the file junk now contains the expected data. This is clearly a bug. Does anyone know of a work around to this problem or where I can find a RPM for dbmmanage? -- Paul (ganci(a)nurdog.com)

Latest kde/tetex updates fail on my attempts. Is it me or ...?

Trying to apply the latest updates to an Athalon base fully updated CentOS 4.2. In the past used the update process kicked off by clicking the hand-dandy red icon. This failed, so I tried yum. Somewhere in the process, it complained that there was no GPG key for the lame libraries (IIRC, everything's a little hazy after all the Googling trying to fix this). Anyway, tried "yum update", same problem (I think). Tried importing some GPG keys that I thought were from CentOS, tried rm -rf on the cache, tried "yum clean headers" and "yum clean packages" (suspecting temporarily bad mirrors?), etc. Reread *in toto* the yum guide again, googled for hours, which has caused the observed hazing of the cornea and glazing of countenance. The rhn config file is out-of-box stock, but I've added the extras, kb and such to the repos directory. All this has worked in the past. Caveat: I manually installed mplayer on the system before I learned enough to realize it is available from the other repositories. I've not yet corrected the situation, which I suspect is the underlying cause of the 1st error regarding the GPG key for the lame libraries (which I could not resolve, btw). I have *not* googled for what I'm about to show, having given up for the week, except for this posting. Edited Yum output is shown below. Bittorrent RPM/Python Issue

Hi All, tried to install the RPM for bittorrent, and got the following, [root@localhost bittorrent]# rpm -Uvh BitTorrent-4.2.2-1-Python2.3.noarch.rpm error: Failed dependencies: python(abi) = 2.3 is needed by BitTorrent-4.2.2-1.noarch [root@localhost bittorrent]# python -V Python 2.3.4 why is this so, when I have 2.3.4. Is this RPM only compatible with 2.3, not 2.3.1-4? Little confused. Cheers. Mark Sargent.

Hey all...just curious if anyone has ever run into any trouble using yum for updates.. anything at all? just curious. Installation sequence for 4.2 / 3.6 dual boot

Hello, I have a Dell 1850 with dual Xeon procs and two u320 36Gb drives. I would like to set this up as dual boot system with 4.2 on disk 0 and 3.6 on disk 1. I imagine that I would install 4.2 first and then 3.6. Would I need to remove the other hard drive while installing a given version? Any gotchas? How about setting up GRUB? Website running slow and Timing Out, but at random...

I have a site running the current version of Centos 4.2, it has a shopping cart running on it and runs slow and times out at random. The cart is a simple php package using a MySQL database backend. Can any one think of ways to improve the speed in MySQL and Apache, I've had the cart checked by the software vendor, it's working like it should, they are pointing to MySQL or Apache and a maybe... Recently we switched from the proprietary version of ssh to the latest versions OpenSSH on RH7, 9 and CentOS4.2 When I run rsync over ssh, even sudo, I get permissions errors: sudo rsync -av --rsh=/usr/bin/ssh --delete <source dir> <user>@<server>:<dest dir> readlink groups/amatogroup/intranet/FoldingServerOO-dev/trash/foldingServer/Folding.NMA/CVS: Permission denied and opendir(groups/amatogroup/research/shepherding/single/RCS): Permission denied Any idea? Hard Drive Errors

Heya, First post to this list. have to say from what I have read in the passed couple months. damn you people are knowledgeable in this stuff! Anyways, I just setup a centos box for my personal little server at home. Basically just a small personal, non-corporate server that runs a webserver, DNS server, MySQL, and recently I installed webmin. The other night I took a peak through webmin to see what kind of things you could do with it and came across this Smart Drive option. Upon further investigation this option appears to show information about my hard drive as the Maxtor drives I have in my server have smart drive capability. They are just a standard IDE drive nothing fancy. When looking at this report I noticed a field called Errors and my Drive had 200 errors. What does this mean? Errors are usually not a good thing. is this a cause for concern? Is there any drive utility tools out there that fix these errors? Server seems to run fine. so I don't know what to think about these errors. That's on my main drive. My other backup drive has about 10,000 errors on it and that causes me some concern heh. Location IDE device A Drive size 29 GB Make and model Maxtor 6E030L0 Supports SMART? Yes SMART enabled? Yes Errors logged 300 errors detected Passed drive check? Yes Should I be concerned about these errors even though it does say it passed the drive check? If so, anyone know how I can fix them? Or is this just normal hard drive life? Any info would be great. CentOS 3.6 won't poweroff

Hi, I have a Packard Bell notebook with CentOS 3.6 installed. When I want to turn off the computer everything goes OK until the power should be switched off ... but the display remains turned on with the last "power down" message on it .. until I press the button. Is there a fix for this? The kernel is 2.4.21-37.EL . Thanks, Adrian
