New logo for CentOS

To celebrate CentOS as the greatest thing since sliced bread, we should endevour to have a new logo in place. Whilst the current one suffices, a new logo/favicon should be in place. Hi, Does anyone know which package i should install in order to play online movies and music (trailer video)? My friend told me that kaffeine does a good job but after installing it , firefox still complains that no plugin available to display media file. Any suggestion are welcome. Apache issue

I know it is a configuration error. But i cannot figure it out. The server was working fine until a couple of days ago. it is now throwing: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. Apache/2.0.52 (CentOS) Server at BabyHydra.localdomain Port 80 Nothing has changed that i can see. Can anyone give me a place to look for the problem? Hello - A few months back, I had a bunch of questions regarding hacking up a centOS install, even going as far as editing comps, adding my own packages as part od @base and @core install groups, etc etc. It was quite an adventure. However, I haven't don it in a while, so naturally, I forgot a lot about it. I'm trying to remember who it was that had forwarded me docs and scripts used by the CentOS build team, including procedures and the like, which would help me out with this. Change the port, change the line, speed, etc to match whatever you have running. Could always place netcat behind inetd and tcp_wrappers to secure down the inbound to a certain ip/subnet. Also, it looks like GNU Netcat actually has the ability to specify the source that's allowed.

hello folks! here's my situation: i've got two WTI RPB+ remote power switches (essentially a 5-port power strip which you can control via serial interface to make each of the ports switch on and off independently). they work fine; i plug a DB-9 cable into the back of my machine, fire up minicom, and i have full control. however, my eventual plan is to use these as fencing devices for a small RHCS cluster i'm building, and so the fencing process will need to be scriptable. Hello you brilliant minds, I am in need of some (probably basic) information concerning CentOS and the new dual core 64 bit systems. I realize that Linux was inherently built for multiple processor systems, as well as 64 bit systems. My first question is AMD doing anything special with doing all of the above on one chip that I need to know about before installing CentOS on my newest system? Also, my motherboard being a a8n32-sli has SATA II and RAID capabilities. Is there anything special about the SATA II that I need to set up to use the full capabilities of this hardware and CentOS. Hi Not entirely centos related but that what the boxes are running so here i go ;) 2 of our centos boxes run nagios for network monitoring and send email and paging alerts and are connected to standard phone lines using modems to send the pages. I'm looking for a way in the event of provider failure to login to these machines and so am looking at the ability to connect to the console over the modem. Any good how-to's on this ? Also interested to know real life seciruty risks etc. Is it possible to limit phone numbers that are abor to connect etc? thanks

Hi folks, I've just finished rsyncing/downloading/jigdoizing the entire i386/x86_64 CentOS 4.2 distribution. If anyone is interested go to http://mirror.tcs.ii.uj.edu.pl/jigdo/ You'll need to edit the .jigdo file by hand to change the server section [Servers] CentOS42=file:/opt/mirrors/centos/4.2/ to point to a local mirror (file, http or ftp), ie. to use kernel.org: [Servers] CentOS42=http://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/4.2/ While doing this I have come upon a few questions: a) it seems the server cd's have a lot of stuff not present in the normal directory mirror, I guess this is an artifact of the build process? [the template files for the servercd's are ~120MB] b) what are the .newheaders and .repodata directories on i386 CD1? c) why do the mirror repodata/*.xml.gz files not match neither the CD nor DVD versions for i386? d) why does the i386 DVD not match ideally, but the x86_64 DVD matches for _all_ files. How to upgrade hard drive in a single drive (with LVM2) computer

This one has me stumped and I'm sure I must be missing something trivial. What is is eludes me. I have a 20G drive that will be replaced with a 160G drive. The /boot partition is just a standard type 83, and the swap is an 82. The system root partition is in a LV, as is the /home partition. I've upgraded hard drives dozens of times without incident, but never ona system with LVM. I did this (booted into single-user mode): 1) Create the appropriate partitions on the new drive 2) Created an EXT3 partition and copies over /boot, ran GRUB to make it bootable. 3) did the mkswap on the second partition. 4) did a pvcreate on the third partition on the new drive, then created th VG (vg1) and LV for the two paritions. 5) Mounted the new partitions under /mnt, then used tar to copy the files from the old to the new (excluding tmp mnt sys & proc) 6) Edited grub.conf (on the new drive) to point to VG1 instead of VG0 for sysroot. Edited /mnt/etc/fstab to point to the new locations (I changed the names of the logical volumes slightly.) 6) Disconnected the old drive, then booted. The system booted, but got only as far as 'Red Hat nash' ... then complained that it couldn't find vg0. (the volume group on the other disk). I can't get into single-user mode when booting this single drive. I'm trying to do this whole thing non-destructively so that the original drive is a backup, until we confirm that the new drive is behaving well. Are these steps correct (and they should be without LVM) or is there something much easier and obvious that I'm missing? I could, I suppose, add the new parition into the original volume group, and do the 'pvmove' dance to get things over (as explained briefly in the LVM-HOWTO on Red Hat's site) but it wouldn't leave a bootable system on the original drive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! TIA, Barry

I saw the link someone posted to SL (Scientific Linux) yumex rpm's. I grabbed the SRPMS, changed some references from SL to CentOS in the spec files and rebuilt the RPMS. I managed to get yumex up and running by manually configuring yumex.conf. What is the use of the yum-utils and the dozen or so utilities? Are there any docs? (Bearing in mind my hack may have damaged the SL installation) CentOS should have its own yumex/yum-utils considering the likes of Scientific Linux and Lineox have had them for a long time. __________________________________________ Yahoo! System: PIII 500Mhz 128MB memory 20GB drive Current CentOS 4.2 Gnome GUI The system runs 'idle' at around 70Mb memory used and 4% cpu usage. But whenever I go to start a task: Start Gedit, Services tool, a Terminal window, Firefox It takes a minute or so. CPU mayyyypeak at 100% briefly then come down. Memory has yet to exceed 100Mb usage. Any pointers of where to look to see why it is slow?

I installed it last week ensuring that LBA was enabled and using gpt with parted to get the full size available on one array. I also think I chose reiserfs for the array. We then moved ALOT of data to the array. Problem now is that after a reboot LBA doesn't seem to be in effect. From dmesg: sdc : very big device. try to use READ CAPACITY(16). Any tips on how I can get the array mounted again? And what might have changed since last boot? :) I've rolled my own kernel to get reiser support, but I haven't recompiled or done any changes... way to disable keyboard and mouse ports

Is there a way to disable the keyboard and mouse ports? I have a machine in a public area running an application that no-one needs to touch. However, someone could come up and plug a keyboard in it and mouse and be logged in as that user (not root). Is there a way to disable the mouse and keyboard so only remote ssh connections will control the PC if changes need to be made. This would also include any usb device which is fine and the PS2 keyboard and mouse. Thanks, Jerry

Crashing Nameservers

Had two nameservers crash in the last few hours... This 'never' happens! On the console was sent an invalid ICMP type 3, code 3 error to a broadcast: 255.255.255.255 on eth0 sent an invalid ICMP type 3, code 3 error to a broadcast: 255.255.254.255 on eth0 with the IP address of the offender? in front of that line. What exactly is different between the 32 and 64-bit version of CentOS 4.2? The kernel (drivers, file system, etc.) is probably compiled to support 64-bit and probably glibc. Linux boot floppy to install over net

With all this going on, it seems to me there MUST be a floppy image that will load the minimum shell (including PCMCIA drivers!) and all over-the-net installs (HTTP, FTP, of NFS). That would really help on one old notebook I have. Oh, and of course this is for CentOS 4.2!

Quick logrotate question for the group. To comply with a PHB mandate, I need to keep our apache logs for a minimum of 2 years, and will be periodically required to hand over chunks of the logs from specific dates/times. While extending the timeframe of logrotate is easy, I've found that there's no elegant solution in the RH/CentOS logrotate for appending dates to the filename. I'm curious to know what others with similar requirements are doing for this. I'd like to stay within the default system framework (no 3rd party apps as they have to be "approved"), so mostly I'm looking for suggestions for a more elegant postrotate script. Thanks

If there is someone who would not mind taking a look at my configuration to see where I'm missing something, or where the difference lies between bind 9 and previous bind 8 configs? Install challenges

As mentioned in my previous post I just completed a rebuild on my new dns/mail server. And it was almost a disaster. When loading from CDs I would get a dialog that an rpm could not be found, perhaps bad media. I would pop out the CD, click OK and things continued. Until finally it would not. I had two copies of the CDs and neither worked! So I happened to have the CDs on my web server (NT running Apache 2.something old) and since these systems were on the same subnet I opted for an HTTP install. Got that going and about 25% in, it hung. And no way to tell it, please try the server again. (other systems could access the server and see the files in question). I tried to get apache running on another Linux system I am building but took a wrong turn there so I desperation I tried the CD install. Everything was working this time until disk 3 about the last rpm. ARGH! So I took the CD out and cleaned it really well, and it found the rpm ni question. Oh what a weekend. I have GOT to get a good way to do an install......

Reading the Output of DF

I am not sure how to interpret the output of the DF -h command. Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 112G 12G 95G 11% / /dev/hda1 99M 12M 82M 13% /boot none 125M 0 125M 0% /dev/shm The filesystem Centos is using is new to me since I have RH 9 on my other server. I assume the FS combines my two drives into the virtual drive. What I do not understand is the "none" filesystem and how that relates to the "VolGroup00-LogVol00", if at all. Hi, I installed MySQL via YUM on an actual CentOS coming with this great bluequartz and it seems they won´t to play with each other. MySQL is working, phpinfo shows me. that it is there. Now i transfered some of my stuff and nothing works: phpmyadmin (with correct inc.php) tells me, that my php-Installation isn´t correct, a little cms (Contenido) shows white pages. audio and video streaming, equipment, and centos 4

greetings... and a heartfelt happy upcoming new year to everyone! scenario: company wants to stream realtime audio and/or video streams of their meetings i have done "a decent amount" of research on the necessary server side software to integrate into centos. not sure i like all that i see though. since the company is on about a 1.5 meg circuit i would expect to hook the equipment into a small centos box at the church which would forward a single stream to a centos server i have at the pop and feed all the client streams from where the bandwidth is. that is, if i am understanding everything correctly. so i felt it best to check the wisdom of the list on those already doing this for the church or other private or commercial entities. may i enquire as to what you are using for the server software? and, may i ask what *specific* hardware for audio and video devices you are using to do this please? something reasonably affordable? any extra guidance or instructions i should be researching or studying to implement this? if you find this is too OT and you wish to reply off list i would be happy to post to the list at a later date the results of the research and implementation i thank you in advance and kind regards, - rh -- Robert Hanson - Abba Communications Computer & Internet Services (509) 624-7159 - www.abbacomm.net

RPM conflicts - help!

I'm building a database/application server with a Dual-Opteron 64 bit system. I need to run PHP4, Apache, and Postgres 8.1, but I'm having conflicts with Postgres 8.1 and PHP 4 that comes with CentOS. History: 1) I installed Apache and PHP with yum. 2) I then installed PostgreSQL 8.1 RPMs from the PG website. 3) Then, I tried to install php-pgsql with yum - and it didn't work, complaining about pgsql.so.3. So, I installed with --nodeps and symlinked the /usr/lib64/libpq.so.4 -> /usr/lib64/libpq.so.3. Now, PHP and PGSQL work without any problems. But now, I can't do a yum update - it still complains about pgsql.so.3! What can I do to resolve this?
