RPMS's rebuilt or upstream one's used Hi I got a cleanly reinstalled 4.2 workstation. However i still needed to build the following SRPMS from Mandriva/Fedora :- - Chkrootkit - Logcheck - Tripwire - Xboard & Gnuchess - Rkhunter I needed to use the upstream versions of :- - OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 - RealPlayer Gold - Acrobat Reader I needed to tweak Bind chroot to log queries and adopt a BSD style UID>1000. All redhat-based systems come with the inevitable tonne of services on by default. Is this the same situation with everyone else? I know Karanbir produces some home made rpm' but obviously not all of the above. Dag's repo is also cool but not as extensive as Fedora Extras. After migrating to centos 4, Im having a weird connection problem with online games, Planeshift and Anarchy Online. Im using my own firewall script, that was working fine before installing Centos. cyrus idled not in the cyrus-imapd rpm?

Hi I successfully installed cyrus + postfix on my centos 4.2 box. When trying to make imap idle working, I noticed that there is no idled executable in the rpm. Do I have to recompile cyrus from source to get idled working? Thanks

Kerberos and Winbind both needed for Active Directory??

When configuring CentOS 4 to authenticate (for all things, such as ssh and samba shares) against Active Directory is it necessary to check both the Kerberos and Winbind options under "Authentication," or is Winbind alone sufficient (since winbind uses kerberos)? When I have attempted to get this working, I was only able to do it with both kerberos and winbind selected. The other problem I had was that I had to have a local account with the same username. I am sure it is something very small that I am missing, but I just can't figure it out. Any comments or suggestions are highly appreciated.

One thing I did find with their Integrated Solutions Console (ISC) was that it seems to read /etc/redhat-release to determine something... Wasn't paying attention to the system calls all that closely, but I did see open(), fseek() and close() on it.

Building PHP PECL modules

I'm attempting to build some PECL modules on fully updated CentOS 4.2 system. Preferably pack them into nice RPM packages. However, seems I'm missing something. For example, this is what I get for sqlite module: $ pear makerpm SQLite-1.0.3.tgz `phpize' failed The php-devel package is installed (so I do have phpize command). It's just that it is failing. See the Autoconf documentation. `phpize' failed I do remember being able to build and install couple of PECL modules some time ago on different CentOS 4.2 system. Howerver, I'm failing to see why the builds are now failing. The two systems look more or less the same (except hardware, the old one was i686, the new one is i586). I'm not an automake/autoconf expert, the above message looks to me more or less like names of Spanish vilages (in other words, I'm completely culeless here). While on the topic of PECL/PEAR, packaging PEAR modules into RPMs kinda works. The "pear makerpm" produces unusable spec files most of the time, but with a bit of editing of those spec files, I got my RPMs. Mostly documentation, "ugly" package names, and by default files get installed outside of PHP/Pear search path (easy to fix manually in spec file). Known bug in pear or am I doing something awfully wrong? Anyhow, any help would be geately appriciated.

Version download problem?

Trying to download the 3.1 iso's of CentOS and no matter which mirror I go to, or release 3 version, I always see the 3.6 iso's. URL: http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/linux/distributions/centos/3.1/isos/i386/ Shows all of the 3.6 iso files. Some reason why I can't find the older release files? disk mounting madness

I've got a server running CentOS 4.2; installed as 4.1, kept updated by yum. A few days ago it crashed. I picked it up from the datacenter, and brought it back to the office, where it took a long time to boot because it couldn't find anything. When it finally booted and I logged in I discovered an interesting problem. Only the / partition had loaded. /etc/fstab had all the partitions recognized by their labels. Checking the hard drives showed the labels existed. I even rewrote the disk labels. But the boot procedure couldn't find the drives by their labels. Nor can a "mount -a" command; it says it can't find the info in fstab (though it _is_ there). But long version mount commands work. And when I redo the fstab file to list the devices rather than labels, everything mounts as it should. Any ideas? Remote print problem

I am running Centos 4 and I am trying to use a printer on a Windows domain that is connected to a Windows XP Pro computer. If I do smbclient //ComputerName/PrinterName password -U UserName and then /> printmode text /> print /tmp/test.txt the printer works. However, if I setup the printer and check the CUPS printers.conf, it appears to be correct, but I get NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL when I print from OpenOffice or try to print from an Apple iBook. how to clean up dependencies packages?

Hi, Does anyone know how to clean up the system, especially the orphan packages. I post this in the forum, but it doesnt seems that nobody interested in this question. In the beginning, my system did not have any kde package but then i installed kaffeine, thus some other kde packages has been installed as dependencies but when i yum remove kaffeine, only kaffeine was removed. The other packages were left. In my Gentoo, i can clean up all the packages that are not installed explicitly but i dont know how to do it in centos. Any suggestion are welcome. I'm all for including that in centosplus. If I remember correctly they also do a --disable-dom but then add it in later with a php-dom rpm package, so I'm not really sure what that one's all about.

A new bitorrent record?

One of our interns had to run down to the datacenter today and rescue an ailing 4.2 machine and the decision was made to just do a fresh install and restore a backup from last night. The only problem was that she had forgotten the 4.2 DVD in the office, a 2 hour drive back and forth. So I suggested she fire up her notebook which has a DVD burner and download the DVD via bitorrent instead. So she plugged her notebook in to a free port on our core switch and had the entire DVD downloaded in under 20 minutes. Yow!!! So I thought I'd offer a big thanks to those of you who keep the ISO available for download. Cheers,

I found this package that is a php class to scroll a message on screen with a gtk wrapper. It wont compile on centos 4.2. http://pear.php.net/package/Gtk_ScrollingLabel It gives me an error about not finding libglade-config after much searching I found libglade-config and installed it. THen I get an error about cant find xml-config.... Can someone who knows more than me help? Thanks if so... Is this a normal process? I would have hoped/thought that this would not be as difficult as this. yum provides libglade-config yum provides xml-config both return nothing found. I'm stuck. Jerry

Anyone use the spell check in OO on Cent4? When I start the spell checker, it has the dialog to change misspelled words, I select the properly spelled words but it never changes the words in the document. Anyone else get this or is there some config I need to set to save changes for the spell checker?

Multiple program instances or multiple log ins?

This all comes out of figuring out how I might run Evolution like I run Eudora. I see where Evolution places its data in a hidden directory: ~/.evolution Now why it is felt necessary to put all of this stuff in hidden directories is beyond me. So it would seem that Evolution is treating each useid as a personality for the logged in user. Given the way Evolution organizes its data, I could create some more Linux users, and either: Give my main user file permissions to them and somehow run copies of Evolution using those /home/user directories. Anyone know how to do that? Or do I somehow have to have multiple simultaneous logins? And switch between them? I know there is a way to have 4 desktops....

New CD-ROM drive causes kernel panic

I have a CentOS 4.2 system that had a bad CD-ROM drive. Every time I inserted a CD, the system would hang (no kernel panic, but no response to mouse, keyboard, or even the network - all I could do was hit the reset button). Today I replaced the CD-ROM drive with another I had lying around. The new drive is a 24x10x40 CD-RW. I don't know the exact model of the motherboard (I should have looked while I had the case open earlier this afternoon), but I know it's an Intel desktop motherboard that's at least 5 years old with a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4. Anyway, to make a long story short, now the system won't even boot! Here are the last few lines on the screen: Starting udev: [ OK ] Initializing hardware... storage network audio done [ OK ] Kernel panic - not syncing: drivers/ide/pci/piix.c:394: spin_lock (drivers/ide/ide.c:c037bb68) already locked by drivers/ide/ide-iops.c/ 1234 Any ideas how I can work around this? I've booted from the CentOS 4.2 CD #1 into rescue mode, but I don't know what I should look for next. Other than removing the CD-ROM drive, what can I do to fix this problem? On compiling for x86_64 on an i386...

Hi folks, Anyway, I have a main development system which is P4 based (without EM64T) and a dozen diskless Athlon 64's. I'd like to be able to compile kernel's, etc for the Athlons in x86_64 bit mode. Any idea how to arrange this? I've recompiled the src.rpm for binutils (added a single line "CARGS=--enable-targets=x86_64-linux" to the specfile) and "as --64" doesn't bork anymore, so I'm assuming I've got that right... I'm assuming I next have to do something to gcc? Haven't figured this out yet... Anything else needed? Holiday cheers, MaZe.

I just added a couple apps to a server and I was asked to insert CD #3. I had wanted to use HTTP to access the distro on my HTTP server. Now I want to install on another server, so I have a second chance to get this right....

logwatch patch

Don't remember if I already wrote about this. But ran into it tonibhg again. Logwatch as distributed with CentOS expects yum log files in different format. As result, logwatch will not report anything. The patch is really simple (and attached). Hopefully it'll be part of 4.3 (if not sooner). The upstream is not likely to patch it, since they don't distribute yum at all. Maybe upstream's upstream, but than we'd have to wait for upstream to have reason to uply upstream's upstream change ;-) I guess it's kind of bordercase. But since it applies to something where upstream and CentOS are different anyhow, maybe it is OK to introduce this change.

Compiling kernel-2.6.13...

Hi. I'm trying to use CentOS4.2 for some audio work (ie. sound editing, etc.). I found a site called PlanetCCRMA (http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/) and decided that I would give some of their applications a try (hoping that it would not affect my system greatly!). At first I tried the Fedora 3 packages (and they do work), but what I really wanted to do is to download the source packages and rebuild them for my system. I was able to successfully build their custom kernel-2.6.10-2.1.ll for my system but they have one available (kernel-2.6.13) that would run my system a little more efficiently (which I need because my system is a Pentium III and I just can't afford a new system just yet). Any how, I tried to compile the source rpm only to encounter an error to the effect of: ./include/linux/kernel.h:10:20: stdarg.h: No such file or directory Is there something wrong that I can't compile this kernel? P.S. I've also tried compiling other kernel versions that they have such as 2.6.11 and 2.6.12 (with exactly the same error message). I "googled" the problem and found that it might have to do with gcc (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?p=1732038) Can anyone help me compiling new kernel? OT: Evolution folder location

I have used Eudora since v 1.35 (circa '93). For quite some time, I have enjoyed keeping each of my mail accounts' folders in totally separate directory trees. In Eudora you do this by specifying the data locatoin as part of the startup: '<program location>/eudora.exe <data location>' So I am quite spoiled. But there is no Eudora support in Linux/CentOS. So where are Evolution folders kept? And Can I do something to have each account in a separate directory structure. Oh, some more about Eudora, since perhaps v4: If you run multiple personalities in a copy of Eudora, all that mail is in a single directory structure, though you CAN have filters to drop mail into different folders. To have multple directory structures, you run multiple copies of Eudora.

I am continually getting the subscription alert panel popping up??? I leave the selection on the default which is to activate and say OK. It asks me for the root password - I enter it. It keeps coming back... I have network connectivity for the laptop. Any ideas? I saw nothing in /var/log/messages. Thanks, Jerry

3ware RAID controller scripts

Hello list, I see through the archives that some people here use 3ware RAID controllers with Centos. I have picked up two 9500S-4LP controllers for future servers. I was hoping that if some people could please share their 3ware monitoring scripts with the rest of the group. What I am really hoping to do is have some setup where a cron job runs scripts to test each of the drives connected to the controller to make sure they are not going to break any time soon and then check the health of the array itself. I am used to using smartd for basic SCSI and IDE drives but not connected to this adapter. Any good souls out there want to spread the knowledge? thx, Bob

Currently I have 2.6.9-22.0.1.EL but i need 2.6.10 or higher, since: 1. I need ipt_CONNMARK 2. The servers are throwing kernel panicks on 2.6.9 and they worked fine when they were running fedora core 3 with the kernel 2.6.10-1.760 So my question is: Do i switch the servers back to fedora. Or do I compile the kernel from source. Or is there a 3rd way out. Merry christmas and happy holidays :) S

ATRpms repo question...

Hi. I'm fairly new with CentOS but have been using version 4.2 with great satisfaction (Thank you!). I've been using repos such as Dag and Dries successfully to keep my packages up to date. (I've seen many posts which allow me to believe that these repos won't change CentOS compatibility to RHEL4 or to migrate it another distro for that matter!) My question applies to the ATRpms repo (which has el4 rpms). Can I safely use this repo to "yum update" my system? When I added the repo to the yum repos (and to the up2date repos as well), I noticed more than 100 packages to be updated (some seem to be system packages like alsa-lib, autoconf, glib2, etc.) Can I update with this repo and maintain same basic system and functionality? All, We are currently testing the yum-utils and yum-utils-plugins in the dev.centos.org repository. The two main plugins that this allows that I think would be great for normal users are protectbase and fastestmirror. I have one SATA drive with windows xp installed. I added a second SATA drive to install CentOS on. During the install, both drives are listed. If I use the auto-partition feature and deselect the drive with windows on it, only selecting the new drive, I get an error message that it could not create the partitions. The same thing happened a few months ago and I manually setup to partitions. This worked, but windows wouldn't boot any longer. The last time I tried this was with CentOS 4.0. I'm reluctant to mess up the windows install and want to dual boot. Searching the web brought up alot of info, but I'm still confused as to whether this should work. I'm using an Abit AN8 motherboard with no ATA hard drives, but an ATA cdrom drive (used for the install). Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks. mark markworkman(a)woh.rr.com ps.
