a bug ?

I installed ipp2p into my system (CentOS 4 kernel 2.6.9-11.EL iptables 1.2.11 ). IPP2P's doc recommend use "-j CONNMARK" to mark a conntrack that it begin with a ipp2p packet. But when I enter "iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -m mark --mark 2 -j CONNMARK --save-mark" into my system , it show me message : "iptables: No chain/target/match by that name" . When I enter "ls /lib/modules/2.6.9-11.EL/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/" , it have not ipt_connmark.ko(or ipt_CONNMARK.ko). Is there a way to read the cpu temp from centos? I have odd things happening on my computer. I have had a couple kernel crashes.. today I was trying to untar a file and got a "Bus error" printed on screen. after a reboot the file untared just fine. very odd behavior. Without rebooting again I was wanting to check the health... I have an Intel motherboard, 2.4 P4, 2 GIG, 2 brand new seagate 300G drives. Thanks, Jerry

Many thanks for the help. The effects of my mis-guided efforts to increase the screen resolution past what the hardware would bear have been corrected. I now have a supplementary question. There does not seem to be a man page or an info entry foe system-config-display and I cannot find a reference to it via apropos. How does one inform oneself about this utility or what am I doing wrong in my search for documentation? Video Recording

Hi, I would like to record some training/advertising videos, in a similar format to those offered by CBT Nuggets (and others). Essentially this means I need to be able grab real video (e.g. webcam or DV camcorder, etc) as well as what is on the computer screen (VNC Recorder maybe) and audio. In terms of output I would like it to be in Ogg Theora format as these seems to be supported both on Linux & Windows (though media player plugins), it is also an open standard which beats all the other available formats. Does anyone have any suggestions for such a program, even if it is suite of different programs. My google/freshmeat search results have so far been not very useful. Thanks in advance Lee

cloning drives

The one thing though is that I will be cloning a smaller drive than the destination drive and would like to distribute the free space accordingly on the new drive. Can anyone recommend anything? Tyan S2891 and CentOS

I am trying to install CentOS to a server that has a Tyan S2891 motherboard, 2 Opteron 875 Dual Cores and 2GB of RAM. I have been able trying to install over a network but the tg3 driver will not load. I then installed from a DVD and on rebooting after the installation I cannot get the network drivers to load and the RAID controller in the PCI slot is not available. It seems that when I do an lspci -tv the only a minimal amount of devices are seen. If you have a separate boot partition, I'd not only suggest making it a primary partition for the same reason, but also mounting it read-only for oops-protection. Nope, not at all. I put /var in Extended, LVM and, if you can believe it, even LDM (yes, Windows "dynamic disk" disk label format ;-). I only avoid putting root (/) in anything but a primary partition for recoverability. lilo is still there. Its just not available as a choice in the install. We build all of our servers using kickstart (automated version of the install) and there lilo can be specified as a boot loader. standard compiler temp space directory

greetings apologies for possibly lame question yet ummmmmmmmmm... where do i look in the docs or google to find out what directory(ies) the various compilers and programs are using for temp space? most of my knowledge of old and simple looking has found that most stuff will go in the below directories... it is still /tmp or /var/tmp or similar otherwise? i havent done any compilation in awhile and am setting up a new box and want to make sure i have enough space in the right areas and partitions thanks in advance - rh

MD Raid 1 software device not booting not even reaching grub

Hi, I have a raid 1 setup where /boot and the rest lies inside the md0 container. /dev/sda1 md0 has /boot /dev/sda2 md0 has swap /dev/sda3 md0 has / SCSI card is an ADAPTEC AIC79xx Grub as the bootloader Centos 4.1 as the OS version Two 70gb SCSI disks The server was working fine. Then a power outage. checked the board,disk,ram,etc. All fine. Now when I try to boot the server does not even reach GRUB (no splash, no menu). I read a post about maybe the MBR got damaged (no fix posted) and another post about missing SCSI drivers not being loaded before kernel boot. list of kernel patches --- where?

Traditionally, I've needed to compile my own kernel for my embedded headless systems. Traditionally, I've been on RH7.3; kernel source came with the distro. Now I'm looking at Centos 4.2 as my base, and two question arise 1: Where is the kernel source (I can hunt it down again, just wanting to know if anybody has a link to it they can paste please) 2: What are the patches applied to 2.6.9 to generate 2.6.9-22.EL by the package builder? (note: I probably have to use a 'latest' kernel from kernel.org to get 'the latest' USB kernel stuff. Dropping in just the USB code into the kernel source mentioned above *might* work, and *might* not, this is part of why I'd like to know what the set of patches are.) I sent this question to the OpenLDAP list yesterday, but I still haven't seen the message come across the list. I am asking here in the hopes of getting a faster response. I am trying to compile OpenLDAP 2.3.11 from source on CentOS4. I have the rpm for db4-4.2.52-7.1 installed and also a source build of BerkeleyDB in /usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.4. How do I get OpenLDAP to link with the bdb 4.4? I was able to get it to configure against 4.3 using the following: export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/lib -L/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.3/lib -R/usr/local/lib -R/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.3/lib" export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.3/lib export LD_RUN_PATH=/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.3/lib export CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.3/include" Apparently, either the CPPFLAGS variable, or the '-R' entry in LDFLAGS made the difference. sorry for the newb questions, but I'm new to linux administration, and even newer to centOS. I do have some experience with Gentoo Linux. How can I get a list of packages that are installed in my system? Is there an equivalent of merge -uDvt world? (This updates the installed packages with latest releases) Is there an equivalent of portage in centOS? (The portage site lists all available packages for Gentoo by 'category'). Thanks for the help. wait() fails

I have a program that forks a child, sleeps for a while and then kills the child and waits for it. On CentOs (4) the wait sometimes fails with a "No child" error. I have not seen this on any other system. This program has been running for years on Solaris, older Redhat distributions, etc. I would say the failure rate is about 1 in 10. I put a breakpoint on the error and forced the code to wait again. It works the second time. Is this a known bug? Mike

ftp problem

I have a server that is running iptables. I'm trying to allow vsftpd in and have the following rules. I can connect to it, but when I try to do a listing it says "Entering Passive Mode" but doesn't do anything. Any suggestions? why was LILO removed from centOS 4.2?

I can't choose LILO as boot loader anymore in the install process? And what is the advantages in GRUP vs. LILO that are so great that LILO has been deleted all together? One big disadvantages when forced to use GRUB is that it is a hassle to make the disks in a RAID1 bootable. https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2005-March/msg05935.html and RAID1 seems pretty useless when it is the only bootable disk that fails. can someone come up with a nice one-liner that will make GRUB "global" like LILO is out-of-the-box ? or is ther a parameter you can give? I don't know about you but when one of my disks fails I really don't need too many new check marks to worry about on my to do list. best regards Ulrik

clicking backspace in centos3 makes ^?

While in centos3, using vim and clicking the backspace I see the ^? character instead of it actually deleteing the previous character. In centos4 this was not a problem. I have rad about remapping keys and such, but can someone tell me what the difference between centos4 and centos3 is so I can make the change to make it work on centos3.

CentOS 4 and Intel Wireless 2200BG (ipw2200)

I am going to be setting up an Intel 2200bg card this evening. I was wondering if anyone is using this (successfully) with CentOS 4. The directions look straightforward, but please let me know if you had to do anything interesting/undocumented to make it work. I am also wondering if people are using the driver provided with the current CentOS 4 kernel or if people are using the most recent version, and if so are you using the one from ipw2200.sourceforge.net or from intel.com Thanks, Barry

Too much memory cache being used while moving large file

System : CentOS 4.2 2.6.9-22.0.1.ELsmp System fully up-to-date. 3GB RAM 3ware 9000S card, with Raid5 array. I think that's about all relevant info ... Had file on disk (not array), attempted to mv file to array. Went fine till 2.4GB was copied, then it slowed down to a meg every few minutes. Free memory was ~50MB (Typically is 1.5-2GB), and cache was 2.5GB. Stopped the move, however cache not being cleared out -- and this issue continues to happen - unsure if it was always a problem/known issue, it does however only occur when copying a single file > 2.4GB (I have copied 5+GB of 1+GB files in the past without issue). Also, saw following in dmesg while this was going on: Out of Memory: Killed process 12467 (mysqld). I'll be restarting server later on tonight, which will 'fix' immediate problem, however just curious on thoughts in regards to this. Regards, Sean O Sullivan

Installed Kernal (default)

Is there a description or statement that describes the stock kernal in CentOS, and would give all the various modules it is compiled with? As with BSD, I assume there are things in the kernal that are mandatory, and then there are things that are optional or included so as to catch most everything one could have w/r/t hardware. That being the case, as with FreeBSD, removing those unneded modules would work to reduce the size of the kernal. Aside from rebuilding the kernal to have it contain certain objects needed for something to work, and the loading of different modules at runtime, are there any other benefits to building a custom kernal for any particular set of hardware? By leaving the modules not needed, how much, if any, overhead does this contribute to size? Is this sort of the way things work under Linux, or am I all wet in my thinking? -- Snowman

CentOS is a really great product, and the package supporters do a bang up job, but the one deficiency I've found is the fact that one can never rely on being able to get updates at any particular time. Whether it's CentOS proper or the Dag additions, something is broke most every time I want to apply updates. I know this is whin[ge]ing, and I certainly don't have a solution to offer. If anyone can offer bucks and/or equipment to improved the software distribution process, your karma would get an enormous boost!!! -- Collins Richey Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code ... Squid updates break tunneling

This is a question I posted to the RHEL3 mailing list but didn't get a response: "We are currently running squid-2.5.STABLE3-6.3E.9 on one of our RHEL3 proxy servers because updating to the latest (squid-2.5.STABLE3-6.3E.14) seems to break any kind of tunelling, ie. things like instant messaging ports and ssh using proxytunnel (http://proxytunnel.sourceforge.net/) Has anyone else experienced this problem with the Squid updates from RHN?" I was wondering if anyone running Centos has any advice/info on this? -- Tim Edwards

There have been some complaints recently concerning this, so I thought an explanation of the setup AND recommendations are in order. First, I want to say that we need more donated servers with fast (at least 100mbit) internet connections. If you are making lots of money using CentOS and are a hosting provider, please consider providing us a donated server so we can better distribute CentOS. Now on to the message :) ----------------------------------------- 1. mirror.centos.org is a rrdns of several machines, so that we can distribute the load for CentOS downloads across several servers. Distributed load is the only way we can serve more than 1 TiB per day for updates. (That's right, 1 TiB per day, ~30TiB per month, double the traffic of 3 months ago, 10x the traffic of a year ago). We had several servers totally maxed out serving updates during the 4.2 release cycle. Did I mention server donations :) There are other ways to distribute the load other than rrdns ... like a load balancer ... but these usually only work well with geographically co-located machines. Since all our machines for mirror.centos.org rrdns are donated and they are disbursed throughout the US and EU. They don't work well with the typical load balancing. 2. Since our machines are not geographically co-located, we need to come up with another method to use multiple servers to distribute load. We are currently developing an application that will use geoip (and public mirrors that we verify are updated: http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=13 along with the donated mirror.centos.org servers) to generate a mirrorlist for each country identified by geoip. This mirrorlist should then have good, fast and geographically accurate servers for each person who does updates. We hope to have this system functioning properly before the release of CentOS-4.3 and CentOS-3.7. If you use the optional fastestmirror plugin, you will even get the fastest mirror in each repo from the mirrorlist. The fastestmirror plugin is currently under heavy development by the people at yum (in which CentOS is helping) ... so it is going to change in the next couple months, but in it's current form it works well for those not on proxy servers to pick the fastest mirrors from a list. http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-devel/2005-November/000947.html 3. Another common problem is transparent proxy servers and yum. HTTP mirrors and yum don't work really well via transparent proxy servers, so if you are using one, your best bet is to pick an FTP mirror from our public external server list (see mirror link above) instead of mirror.centos.org. ------------------------------- So, what can you do now if you have problems ... or just want to help. First thing is to pick several close mirrors and not use mirror.centos.org in your /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.conf file. There is an example of a repo with more than 1 mirror in the fastestmirror link above. If you have more than 1 mirror for each repo (I recommend that you do) ... and if you don't have to use yum via a proxy server that blocks outbound client connections ... then you should try the fastestmirror plugin above to pick your best mirror from the list at yum run time. We will continue to strive to deliver CentOS within our means as we continue to grow by leaps and bounds, but we need the help and support of our user community if we are going to be able to continue to provide the same stellar services that we have all grown accustomed to. That means people who use CentOS will need to support it ... that is what the Community ENTerprise Operating System (CentOS) is all about. Thanks, Johnny Hughes

The question remains unanswered: WHY was LILO removed? We/you/they removed *something that works*. What took its place does not work everywhere LILO does... a functionality loss. I hear folks saying "that loss is corrected in a future release" That's saying GRUB is *almost* ready to replace LILO, which has been removed prematurely. The question was "Hey, REDHAT, *WHY*?" The purpose is extra features. Mainly, we are having problems with reliability. Twice now, when the system has crashed, the database was corrupted. The scary thing is that both times the database was completely idle when this happened. Version 2.3 fixes a problem with the database checkpoint command and also allows for an automatic database recover on startup. Hopefully, this will at least allow us to recover more easily in the case of a crash. We are also looking at updating Berkely DB to see if that would help. Bowie

gdb segfault under ddd

I am using CentOS 4 GNU gdb Red Hat Linux (6.3.0.0-1.63rh) GNU DDD 3.3.9 (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu) I bring up ddd on a program compiled -g and type: list function_name gdb seg faults. If I bring up ddd on gdb and then run gdb with the same program an type list function_name everything works just fine.
