Hi, A rather trivial request: anyone know where I can find tree for CentOS? It's part of FC4 Base but I've not tracked it down for CentOS yet. Install from CD bug

I commented on this a few posts back, but thought it was perhaps a fluke of mine, but I'm not so sure now. Tonight, I tried without success to install the mysql package from the 4.1 CD's and I got the same non-event as before. After selecting the package with "add/remove software", I checked the mysql box, then added the server and perl modules to complete things. The CD was in the tray, but tray was open. When prompted, I clicked OK, the tray inserted, and the drive spun up, but nothing happened. I briefly saw the CD appear on the desktop, then disappear, which it did before. I know its mounted, as when I open the icon for computer, and select the CD-RW drive, the file list pops into view. Is this something that occured due to the 4.2 update, or should I be still able to install software from the CD using the add/remove tool? Pkg add jumps right open when I manually clicked on the mysql package in the rpm list, so I know that part is working. Any way to debug this problem, as there are times when I'd like to be able to install straight from the CD vs. a yum install (like when Dag's repo is down as it is now) Sam -- Snowman

Network Install Problems

Installation over the network has seemingly failed, for the second time. Everything goes smoothly until about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through the downloading packages stage, at which point it hangs (both times its been 8% through a package, not sure if this is of any significance, 1st time cups and now gawk). I set the install to look on the mirror.centos.org site and use the centos/4/os/i386 folder. For the second attempt I chose a server install, with no additional packages... hoping this would help, apparently not. Its been hung for about 30 mins now, I would've thought this isn't normal, but maybe someone can enlighten me. Nick

Hi all, Just a quick Q on the new openssl update. I recently converted from wbel3 to centos3, so my installed version of openssl _seems_ newer than the new version. Below are some details that may help... Hi, I am in the proces of upgrading my CentOS 4.1 servers to 4.2. I've burnt CentOS 4.2 CD's from the ISO images (these images work because I already installed a new server with it), but I am unable to upgrade the existing servers to 4.2 using the CD's.... Does anybody have a clue, why this is not working... or is the online update option the only one... Thom

firewall dilemma

Hi everyone, I have this problem that I'm not sure what's the best solution for it. I need your input & help... I have an internal network behind a hardware firewall. All traffics go thru. the firewall. One of the firewall's rules is that it doesn't allow internal network accesses internal resources that travels outside then come back. In the other words, it drops all packets originate from inside the network that travels outside and then come back to access internal resources. For example: I have web server (used internal ip 10.1.1.10) behind the firewall, internal network can access this web server with http://10.1.1.10, but they can't access http://www.mydomain.com. Assume that I have static IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) maps to 10.1.1.10 and dns record www.mydomain.com points to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx What I want is to allow users inside the network be able to access http://www.mydomain.com instead of http://10.1.1.10 Here is my question: should I change the rule of the firewall? If so, is there a security risk? Is there any other solution for this? By the way, I don't have an internal DNS, I use my ISP DNS service. Thank you so much for your help, JC

Well, Im using an Adaptec Snap 4500 and I've had nothing but problems with it, initially I thought it was an issue with CHAP authentication so I completely disabled authentication and the kernel is still reporting in dmesg and /var/log/messages that it cannot authenticate with the target /boggle... On a side note, I know the iscsi slice works because I can connect to it just fine on Windows XP pro. I am having a very hard time getting iscsi to work with CentOS 4, if I put the same exact settings into the Microsoft ISCSI initiator it works great, however I continually get authentication errors from the kernel driver for iscsi when I try it on my *nix machine. Any advice? Thanks, -Drew

Best mkfs.ext2 performance options on RAID5 in CentOS 4.2

I can't seem to get the read and write performance better than approximately 40MB/s on an ext2 file system. IMO, this is horrible performance for a 6-drive, hardware RAID 5 array. Please have a look at what I'm doing and let me know if anybody has any suggestions on how to improve the performance... System specs: ----------------- 2 x 2.8GHz Xeons 6GB RAM 1 3ware 9500S-12 2 x 6-drive, RAID 5 arrays with a stripe size of 256KB. Each array is 2.3TB after formatting. ioscheduler set to use the deadline scheduler. mkfs.ext2 options used: ------------------------ mkfs.ext2 -b 4096 -L /d01 -m 1 -O sparse_super,dir_index -R stride=64 -T largefile /dev/sda1 I'm using a stride size of 64 since the ext2 block size is 4KB and the array stripe size is 256KB (256/4 = 64). clamav

Hi all, I tried: /usr/bin/freshclam -l /var/log/clamav/clam-update.log and I got some warnings telling me that my ClamAV installation is OUTDATED - please update immediately!... then I tried: yum update clamav, but no clamav package was found. Does anybody know how to update clamav using yum or any other updater??? Thanks, JC --

grub booting from software raid problem

Dear All, I'm trying to install Centos 4.2 x86_64 on a new Opteron server, using a software raid 1 boot partition. Here is the appropriate section of my kickstart.cfg #System bootloader configuration bootloader --location=mbr #Clear the Master Boot Record zerombr yes #Partition clearing information clearpart --all --initlabel #Disk partitioning information part raid.01 --size 50000 --asprimary --ondisk sda part raid.02 --size 50000 --asprimary --ondisk sdb raid / --level=1 --device=md0 --fstype ext3 raid.01 raid.02 ###################################### Unfortunately, when the server completes the install and reboots I am stuck at a GRUB prompt. Typing the following at the grub prompt allows me to boot: root (hd1,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-22.ELsmp ro root=/dev/md0 initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9-22.ELsmp.img boot But, once booted grub-install fails: grub-install --root-directory=/boot /dev/sda /dev/md0 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive If I don't use software raid for the root partition, all works fine, but this erodes the redundancy of my server... Have I suddenly started doing something wrong, or is there a new bug out there that needs whacking ? I'd be grateful for your comments! Jake -- Dr J. samba log on problems

I can not log on to my samba server from centos client, this used to be ok when running 4.1. I don't now if I have messed up or what. The server is up and running, no problems with log on from windows client. On client, Iptables is ok, server is running, lisa is running. I think perhaps I missed something in some discussions over the last week or so.. I was reminded last night that the repository for CentOS 4.1 had been moved to "vault" .whatever .. Is that correct? What should I have in the /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo ? For future reference, is there a document that gets updated when the base repository changes? Thanks.. -- Snowman

Hi all I want to migrate a server from Whitebox Linux 4 to CentOS 4. I think I should be able to do it without reinstallation, as both are RHEL clones...Can someone please tell me how? and if there are any pitfalls doing it on a production server and doing further updates from CentOS updates? Hi, I have been using Centos since 3.0. I have been upgrading regularly without any major problem. 4.1 to 4.2 has been a total disaster. I ran yum update, it went through and a couple of hours later I rebooted and X froze with the screen just being just fuzz [regular rectangles, orange, green...] and the keyboard froze. Could not do a alt-ctrl-backspace, nor a Alt-F1-6 nor Alt-Ctrl-Del. I have a ATI9200 with a Samsung 710N [It only works at 1240x1024 @ 60Hz, it will not work at any other frequency] This is the same hardware as I was running with 4.1. I had to reinstall 4.1, now I cannot run yum update to get the security updates, it tries to upgrade to 4.2. 1. Is there a way to just get the updates for 4.1 and not 4.2 2. Any suggestion on what went wrong with X. It's not just the frequency display because the keyboard also froze. Thanks

proxying rsync through http

Hi All, I'm trying to get rsync to proxy through an apache httpd server to an rsync server. On the proxy, which has a direct connection to the internet, I've stopped the firewall and unset HTTP_PROXY and RSYNC_PROXY. Installing Tomact as a service... update

So I've been trying to use this site and the daemon script here. http://www.linuxjava.net/howto/webapp/#tomcat It works so far. I mean, at least the server starts, I can get to the site, etc. So far, so good. The only problem is, for some reason when I start tomcat using root everything runs fine. When I start tomcat using this script, however, I get this.... FATAL [http-8080-Processor25] (DatasourceConnectionProvider.java:47) - Could not find datasource: java:comp/env/jdbc/sybDB javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: Name jdbc is not bound in this Context Any idea what the difference would be? symantic ghost with centos 4.2

I am trying to use symantic 8.X and ghost a disk. I get "Apllication Error 29004. Read sector failure, result = 1, drive = 0, sectors 2071692247 to 2071692255" when trying to ghost the disk. anyone done this successfully? symantic supports ext3. Thanks, jerry

Setting up Tomcat as a service under CentOS 4?

I've found about a dozen different ways to skin this cat (no pun intended). Everything from creating a script in /etc/init.d/ to using jsvc. I was hoping someone out there, those of you out there who run Tomcat in this manner, how did *you* set this up? I can't seem to get it right. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or even direction to an authoritative document. Preston

I'm converting an environment from mandrake to centos, and always try to use the applications standard on the distribution. This means a switch from courier to cyrus. A bit of reading uncovered a potential problem - the site uses firstname.lastname@domain, and I have come across references that Cyrus does not support this. Moving from whitebox 4.2 to centos

I've been following the faq for moving from whitebox to centos (which admittedly is for release 3, but using the equivalent release 4 files) and keep getting stuck when installing the centos-release-4-2.1 rpm which says it should replace whitebox-release4.2 However this is not happening, giving me the following rpm -Uvh http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/centos-release-4-2.1.… Retrieving http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/centos-release-4-2.1.… error: Failed dependencies: /etc/whitebox-release is needed by (installed) initscripts-7.93.11.EL-1.WB1.i386 Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi. I need advice for a mail sever for linux. I only interested in smtp and smtp secure service. I need the ability to resend the incorrects mails that have incorrect address or that couldn't be sended beacause there wasn't internet connection. blocking outgoing ports with iptables

Hi, I'm using the generic system-config-securitylevel-tui program on a remote server to configure my firewall. So far it's been fairly decent, allowing me to open up ports and whatnot. But I want to start blocking a couple of outgoing ports on my machine. I want to lock it down so the only traffic going in our out of my machine is stuff that I specify. Is there a way to do this with the system-config-securitylevel program? If not, what do you recommend I use to configure the firewall? thanks, ajay

Broken up2date & install from CD ?

I've run into some problems I can't explain. I tried to install the mysql package from the 4.1 CD's and the installer just sat there telling me to insert the CD into the drive and click OK. I did that, and it just blinked once, then returned to the same thing.. hit the OK button, etc., etc., again and again. Wound up having to yum install the mysql package which went OK afik. Now, trying to run up2date for the latest updates, and its hung on fetching the obsoletes list for channel centos4-addons. Will not go any further. I had to remove DAG from the repos, as every time I tried to fetch something, it bombed out, so don't know if its my problem or somewhere else. Hints?? Sam -- Snowman

AIC7901 RAID320 with CENTOS4 not recognized

An INTEL Server motherboard model SE7501BR2 with an onboard Adaptec AIC7901 controller (with HostRAID) is not being recognized by CENTOS 4. The AIC79xx driver loads correctly, however it does not "see" the fact that I used the HostRAID onboard software to create a RAID 1 set. I went to the INTEL site and only found a driver for RHEL 3.0 and I was unable to find a driver on the adaptec site. The CENTOS4 installer gives me the option to create partitions, raids, etc. This is not what we want since creating a RAID by software it's supposed to be more slow that doing it hardware based right? Does the CENTOS4 support the AIC7901 with HostRAID or not? Looking for mediawiki with yum, I find it on Dag repository yum --enable dag list mediawiki* Available Packages mediawiki.i386 1.4.7-1.2.el4.rf dag But the installation fails with Error: Missing Dependency: php >= 4.3.11 is needed by package mediawiki Where could I find a yum repository with php-4.3.11 for centos-4? This thread (... Tomcat ...) emphasizes the essential conundrom of CentOS whose mission is to provide a community-based, well-maintained and freely distributable version of the stable enterprise software from the Well Known North American VENDOR (WKNAV). There is a essential gap betweenthe community (I want lots of current packages) and the WKNAV base (you get what I choose to provide). As CentOS becomes more popular and reaches more desktop and server users, the gap becomes more evident. And there is also the ever present clamor for software that is not freely distributable due to licensing considerations. What I would recommend to assist those who love the CentOS stable base but want more than CentOS can (legally or otherwise) provide is to follow the documentation approach taken by Ubuntu. Ubuntu is based on the Well Known GNU/Linux Provider (KKGLP) but goes well beyond what the WKGLP chooses to privide. The community of Ubuntu has provided a single document with brief HOWTOs and website references for a lot of commonly needed services that are not provided by Ubuntu or the WKGLP. Granted this document (based on Ubuntu 5.04) but not really updated for Ubunto 5.10) is rapidly aging, but it is an example of what could be a very valuable service. Ubunto also provides a well-organized list of HOWTOs on its forums. This is the place for services like Tomcat which have non-redistributable components. It's perfectly legal to provide concise, up-to-date HOWTOs for software that cannot be redistributed. Perhaps someone (or a group of someones) would like to take on organizing such a compendium of instructions on the CentOS Forum and keeping the compendium up to date? Think how many hours of googling and searching mail archives and copious RTFM could be saved! Instead of firing off a mail to this list, you could first look in a well known place on the Forum and avoid recasting a round object. I'm not in a position to undertake such an endeavor. I keep current with CentOS, and I want to see CentOS thrive, but I have only a peripheral interest in CentOS, and that peripheral interst is a work connection. My employer, like many others, prefers to have a contractural arrangement (who can I kick around if it breaks even though it never breaks?) and to pay big bucks to the WKNAV for that privilege. CentOS is the closest thing I can get for my home system without paying the WKNAV, and this I will not do. Some food for thought. -- Collins Richey Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code ... Which files do I need to edit in order to initialize a route after a reboot. I have a 802.1q tagged VLAN interface which I need to create a rule, and a route for. I see on my CentOs 4.2 box that in /etc/iproute2 there are the following files. I realize that I can add my tables to /etc/iproute2/rt_tables, but when I want to create a rule I am not sure where to put the information for the next reboot. sshd problems

Hello, For some reason ssh has stopped working. Its been a good while since I tried to login remotely so I figure an upgrade is probably to blame as it was working some time ago. This is the only error I see when sshd is started: Oct 28 21:55:52 sshd[7137]: Server listening on :: port 22. Oct 28 21:55:52 sshd[7137]: error: Bind to port 22 on 0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use. What does this mean? TIA

hello, i was thinking of using postfix for a mail server, the question is can i use this just for in bound email only and have my clients access this server locally. the clients would be outlook. I want this to check certain email accounts i have and download them to the postfix mail server. The reason i would think about doing this is my wife and i need to access both of these accounts and i do not want to keep them on the email account. is this feasable and secure? thanks Steven "On the side of the software box, in the 'System Requirements' section, it said 'Requires Windows or better'. UP vs SMP kernel ?

There was a discussion here several days ago that was precipitated by my decision to manually install the new kernel before YUMming the upgrade to CentOS 4.2. The upgrade went south but I recovered by doing a fresh install and a bunch of copying from backups. All's well EXCEPT that I'm back in the same "box", thanks to anaconda.
