VLAN tagging problems

We are using Centos behind an F5 Bigip load balancer. The linux box is using bonding and tagged VLAN's Everything works fine except that when traffic is forwarded from the BigIP to the linux box on the VLAN where the web server is running the linux box returns the traffic on the wrong VLAN, It returns traffic on the lowest ordered VLAN. ie. here is a tcpdump on my load balancer showing traffic being sent on VLAN 911 to the linux box, but the linux box returns traffic on VLAN 902. The linux box is returning traffic on the same VLAN as its configured default gateway. If I change the default gateway to be on the VLAN 911 then everytyhing works. CentOS with VMware issues

Good day everyone..... I have an install of centos 4.0 patched to 4.2 as my base install. I then installed VMWare 3.2 (gx) over top. I was then going through the install of centos 4.2 (non-patched - latest ISO's) into a virtual machine. Now here is where the issue happens.... on the install, the file "xorg-x11" causes a typical "file can not be access/ file not found" error. I have tried 2 sets of disks (different media even) on my older ISO images, and then even started with the current ISO images on another set of new media. The same symptom always occurs. On the same file, every-time. HAs anyone come across this? Does anyone have CentOS working with VMWare? Thanks in advance! Dustin

kernel panic when booting with new lvm group/volume

I've added new volume group with single logical volume: pvcreate /dev/sdb1 vgcreate -s 32m xxx_vg /dev/sdb1 lvcreate -l 1234 -n yyy_lv xxx_vg and rebooted the server after it. When booting, the kernel panics with can't mount root file system. Looking at the console output, it seems all volume groups and all logical volumes on them were imported correctly. However, if I go to rescue mode, and re-create initrd image: chroot /mnt/sysimage cd /boot rm initrd-ver.img mkinitrd initrd-ver.img ver lilo then reboot, the server comes up just fine. This is kind of wierd. The root file system was available (at least according to vgscan output which claimed it imported my sys_vg volume group with all the logical volumes I have on it), I haven't touched sys_vg at all, however unless I actually rebuild initrd image, the kernel fails to mount it!? ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.

bind for dummies

Scenario... 2 Linux servers both running bind. CentOS 3.5 DNS Master is also samba PDC and LDAP master DNS slave is also samba BDC and LDAP slave DHCP configuration instructs clients of the 2 DNS servers. Windows seems to always want to register DNS with slave which they aren't permitted to do, and seemingly never with master (where they are permitted) which generates errors such as... Oct 28 12:38:05 linserv1 named[2990]: client 192.168.xx.192#1065: update forwarding denied am I supposed to configure master differently to permit forwarding from slave? Upgrading from WBEL and 4.2?

A while ago, I wrote a script to switch a server from WBEL 4.x to CentOS 4.x. The recent switch to 4.2 broke this script. Now there are all kinds of dependencies like python-urlgrabber, and tshe task of getting these sorted out just drop me into dependency hell. (and this is just trying to get yum installed!) Default number of serial ports

Hi all: My question is concerning the default number of serial ports compiled into the standard CentOS 4.x kernel. It looks like the default is 8, is that correct, and is there a simple way to raise the default that without needing to recompile the kernel? I looked though the /proc directories and I do not see anything there. I have two 8 port serial cards, which bring my total serial ports to 18 with the two on the motherboard. The does system assigns ttyS* to the 2 onboard, and the first 6 on the first serial card. I can tweak these first 6 with setserial and they work My goal it avoid having to recompile the kernel from the stock disto. Thanks! ~Sean

Yum/Update anomolies: not a problem?

Today, got a wild hair and decided to check the update logs. I don't know why I want to destroy my perfectly reasonable sense of complacency at my advanced age... OOPS! Humor, sorry, retracted. Hello guys, i have some problem with compiling UML on 2.6.13.X CentOS 4.2. Minimal server install and a few other questions.....

Hello, I was wondering what is the smallest install that anyone has managed with 4 (4.2 to be precise) ? I'm looking at a machine running as a VPN in a DMZ, so I'm going to remove/NOT INSTALL things like gcc, X, etc. I'm planning on putting this on a 1gb USB stick and booting from it. That reminds me, was there going to be a 1 CD server install image ? The other thing I noticed is that if I install on x86_64 I get around 400mb in /usr/lib *and* /usr/lib64, is this entirely necessary ? Especially if I dont want the 32bit stuff ? How can one tell which packages are responsible for the libs in /usr/lib/ ? cache memory not being used

Since I upgraded to 4.2 it looks like the cache memory doesn't go over about 70K or so. I have over 700K free and it started using swap, which doesn't normally happen for a few days or so. Any hints on what might be up? This is just after a compile and the cached is only 75k total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1032848 263992 768856 0 4612 75628 -/+ buffers/cache: 183752 849096 Swap: 1052248 18260 1033988 On a side note, anyone able to have Xorg running for more then 14 days? It consumes about 750megs after 14 days or so.

Opteron + Nvidia + Centos 4.2 i386 = Thud

Dear All, Just returned from vacation and was delighted to see that Centos 4.2 is now on the mirrors. Unfortunately the new i386 version is giving us problems on our dual Opteron workstations with Nvidia graphics cards... Basically, nine times out of ten, the boxes will hang when they try to re-load X... and just sit there with the keyboards Caps and Scroll lock LED's flashing. The only way out is the reset button. The working fixes I have so far found are to either use a non-smp kernel (2.6.9-22.EL) or to use the VESA X driver. Neither is a proper solution as the machines are used for 3D modeling. Non working fix attempts have included: passing acpi=off to the kernel trying Nvidia driver versions x86-1.0-7676, x86-1.0-7667 and x86-1.0-6629 Installing Centos from scratch as well as upgrading Centos 4.1 to 4.2 (via up2date) Trying three different Nvidia cards (Geforce 6800U, 5900 and a MX200) Trying two different motherboards (Tyan thunder K8W and Tiger K8W - both are AMD 8000 chipset based) Trying two different pairs of Opteron 240's and Opteron 246's. As things used to work more or less perfectly with i386 Centos 4.1 (2.6.9-11.ELsmp and the Nvidia 7667 driver) I'm starting to feel a little stupid - any chance that someone could put me out of my misery and suggest some solutions? In CentOS 3, look for mrtg.conf in /etc/httpd/conf.d. This file configures /mrtg for localhost access only. Change the 'Allow from' line to something sensible and it should work. Hi, I have a HP DL 585 server with Quad Opteron processors and 32 Gbytes of RAM. I would like to know whether CentOS 3.5 x86_64 will recognize all 4 CPUs and 32 Gbytes of RAM. Two small issues after upgrade to 4.2

I made a yum update to 4.2 yesterday. The first "major" update I did on CentOS, I'm only using it for a few weeks now, starting with 4.1. Mainly for evaluation for a prospected migration from Suse to CentOS. Basically the update went very well, fast (only 180 MB needed to be installed) and smooth. But there were two small issues where I don't know why they happened: 1. There was a (actually two) spamassassin.rpm of SA 3.1.0 installed, the rpm was built from the tar.gz sources for SA with the specs file provided with it. It produces two files for installation: perl-Mail-SpamAssassin and spamassassin. The update wiped them and installed SA 3.0.4 with this message: Obsoleting: perl-Mail-SpamAssassin.i386 0:3.1.0-1 with spamassassin.i386 0:3.0.4-1.el4 Shouldn't this update get skipped because the version information is higher than the CentOS package? I found several mentions that I can exclude packages from yum updating. How can I do this? I don't want to update only specific packages, I only want to exclude a very few packages. 2. sshd seems to start twice or so since that update. No problems with ssh, though. from boot.log: Oct 24 14:00:16 nx05 sshd: succeeded from warn log: Oct 24 14:00:16 nx05 sshd[1737]: error: Bind to port 22 on 0.0.0.0 failed: Address already in use. Same thing happens when I restart sshd and even when I reload it. There was a new sshd_config installed, I think I read something about removing ssh 1 protocol from it. This can't be the cause. There's only one instance of sshd running apart from the children for actual logins. Why is this happening, how to fix it? There is another question that arises in this context: will a yum update always overwrite with new configuration files, if that file got changed from the originally installed one? I'm used from Suse that new configuration files get saved with another extension if the original file got changed or in some cases it overwrites the file but copies the old file to a backup. I can also expressly exclude some config files from overwriting via sysconfig (if I remember correctly), can I do similar with CentOS? Hi guys, I'm using Centos 3.5 with Apache-2.0.46. i linke my mrtg from /var/www/mrtg to /var/www/html/mrtg so i did the command ln -s /var/www/mrtg. it worked fine last week but when i checked the mrtg today it say 403 forbidden. Load balancing email?

Currently, we have two mail relays for inbound messages, and a third for POP. The inbound messages go thru all the CPU-intensive anti-spam stuff, and then they relay it to the POP server for pickup. Currently, one of these is the "primary", and the other is "secondary", and I'd like them to be considered more or less as equals, since the "primary" system is getting beaten pretty hard. The DNS zone file says something like this: ############################### @isp.com <SNIP> IN MX 100 mx1.isp.com. IN MX 1100 mx2.isp.com. <SNIP ################################ I seem to recall that I make them act as "equals" by simply changing this to ############################### @isp.com <SNIP> IN MX 100 mx1.isp.com. Problem rebuilding glibc for xen

I would like to rebuild glibc specifically with the -mno-tls-direct-seg-refs to allow better performance with Xen. I'm using Centos 4.2 x86_64 on an Athlon 3200+. I'm using the 2.6.9-11.106.unsupported kernel for reiser support. My thought was to download and install the SRPM and then rpmbuild with no changes to make sure it works before adding the above flag. Unfortunately, the rpmbuild hangs during tst-tls9. Has anyone else managed this? As an alternative suggestion is there a chance that a build of glibc with this flag could be added to centosplus? This would be very useful until this change makes it into the main stream. Thanks Daveh

which process & file taking up disk IO?

I'm having load problems on a server. The bottleneck appears to be disk IO. iostat would show ~100, under %util, during peak usage. i'm running things like clam antivirus, pop, exim, apache, mysql on the server. is there a way to check which process and which file is taking up disk IO? or see what is being written to the disk? i'm very puzzled as the amount of writes is 10 times higher than the reads; and I can't figure out what the writes are for. vsftp passive mode / iptables issue

I've been struggling with my firewall and getting vsftp to work in passive mode. It seems that everything on this hosting server works just fine without the eth0 entry in my iptables except for vsftp in passive. You will need to allow incoming SSH connections on the machine to which you are connecting but you don't appear to have got to that stage yet. "No route to host" would indicate that there's a basic network connectivity problem between the two machines in question. Check you can ping the machines from each other, I suspect you can't. Most likely you've got a typo in a netmask or something similar. Charlie

In case anyone besides me is interested, installing these packages on CentOS4.2 seems to work. Lamar Owan provided a lot of help in his reply but I either missed any reference to the compatibility libraries or he failed to mention them. It is too bad that I was not aware of this when I carried out my procedure. However, as my recent post stated, this update was carried out on a dedicated development server. The each postgresql-8.0.4 package was first rpm -U --test installed with dependencies on to see what would break and determine if anything critical was in that list. The packages dependent upon libpq.so.3 on our server were: mod_auth_pgsql-2.0.1-6 dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1 perl-DBD-Pg-1.31-6 postgresql-tcl-7.4.8-1.RHEL4.1 postgresql-python-7.4.8-1.RHEL4.1 Now the postgresql-*-7.4.8 stuff is not used on the development server, or anywhere else in our operation so far as we can determine. Those were deleted. Ditto for dovecot. Ditto for perl- DBD. Finally, the development machine does not provide httpd service so mod_auth_pgsql-2.0.1-6 is also redundant. Linux OS distributions are not religious dogma. Sometimes you just have to get something working and accept that fact that this choice will render less important things useless. This may not be the most elegant approach, but there is always a limit to the amount of time available to solve these kinds of problems. I appreciate that moving from postgres 7.x to 8.x is a far more involved issue for applications running against that dbms than simply loading the software. But all I needed was get a particular version of a particular package running on a tabula rasa server dedicated to development of a new application. The point being to avoid converting from pg 7.4 to 8.x in the future. At least all this information is now on the list for future reference. CentOS specificly, is there any rule of thumb about package names when searching for and installing things using yum? I ask, after I finally found the perl/Tk package I needed, but only after trying several incantations of the package name, from the full blown alpha/numeric name to simply perl/Tk. Is it safe to assume when searching or yum'ing a package that just the package name and perhaps up to the release version would apply in a majority of cases? Many thanks... -- Snowman

Centos 4.2 and Boot/Root on RAID?

Hi, I have a client that insists on going with software rather than hardware raid1 to save a few dollars. Can Centos 4.2 do Boot and Root on software Raid1? I've heard criticisms of Grub and bootable RAID. Also, if it is not set up to work out of the box, I'd like to try to talk them out of it. I've been down that road before. If I go nonstandard, by the time I actually need to boot from the second drive in an emergency, I've forgotten the special procedure. (Why can't businesses just spend a few extra dollars to do things right?!) Thanks for any info. -Steve

Hi. What imapd can you recommend for minimum configuration and maintenance (no Cyrus)? This is for a small shop, so no hard performance requirements. I'd prefer one where I don't have to build my own packages (no Courier, unless packages exist). Thanks. Morten
