Kernel 2.6.9 hangs

I upgraded from a RedHat 9 to CentOS 4.1 system using yum without any hiccup. Upon reboot, the kernel appears to be stalled after printing this message: "Creating block devices". Keyboard is still responsive and you can press ALT-CTRL-DEL to reboot the system (when pressed, it says something about MD being unmounted). This is the last few lines before it hangs: Freeing unused kernel memory: 176k freed Rd Hat nash version 4.2.1.3 starting Mounted /proc/filesystem Mounting sysfs Loading jbd.ko module Loading ext3.ko module Creating block devices The kernel I'm using is the kernel-smp-2.6.9-11.EL.i686.rpm (I've also tried the uni processor kernel with the same result). What happens after creating block devices? Any idea what to look for/check? TIA!

vsftpd failing since upgrade to 4.2

My vsftpd was working. I use it configured via xinetd and turn it off (disabled = yes) when I'm not using it to keep the bad guys from hammering on it. Recently I upgraded to 4.2 (via yum update). That' the only change I know of on the system. And I didn't have any problems with it. Today when I try to ftp, i enabled it in xinetd.d (with disable = no and a "service xinetd restart") But I can't connect. Well, I connect, but then I'm dropped with the reply: 500 OOPS: cannot open config file:/etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf The config file is there: -rw------- 1 ftp ftp 4271 Oct 23 21:03 vsftpd.conf I haven't changed it's permissions. the ftp account appears intact: ftp:x:14:50:FTP User:/var/ftp:/sbin/nologin There are no related entries on tehlog, only the connect in /var/log/secure: Oct 23 21:11:58 tn1 xinetd[13086]: START: ftp pid=13113 from=xx.xx.xx.xx I tried starting it manually via service vsftpd start. That appeared to start fine, but when I look no process is running. So I tried to start it manually and get teh same error [root@tn1 init.d]# /usr/sbin/vsftpd /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf 500 OOPS: cannot open config file:/etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf Anyone help? Using multiple A records is good for performance balancing, but what if one of the systems fails? Using your cocnfiguration, the delivering mail server has an "a" record and a single MX, so it wouldn't try the other mail server in the case of a failure, right? Whereas, by listing multiple IPs and mx1/mx2, wouldn't the delivering mail server try the other address? Server without keyboard

I'm trying to set up a small machine as a server using a Via EPIA SP 8000E mini ITX motherboard. It's got a fanless Eden processor and I'm using a SATA hard drive. The CD drive is removed, as I only wanted it to install CentOS and don't anticipate needing it again. My problem is running this machine with CentOS without the keyboard. I've set the BIOS to ignore keyboard errors so it boots OK, but I can't get it to restart without a keyboard attached. Logging into it as root via ssh and telling it to shutdown -h now works fine, but when I tell it to shutdown -r now it gets as far as the "Restarting system." message then just freezes. Is there any known solution to this? Thanks. Dave Fletcher

Anyone use a Rio Cali Sport with CentOS 4.2?

My wife does and here's the problem. It automatically mounts the flash memory of the player. But it doesn't mount the SD card slot. I used Ubuntu 5.10 recently and it mounted both of them. Both as separate USB sticks. How do I get CentOS to do the same thing? Or can it not discern that two USB flash devices are plugged in? Preston

starting a java application as a service

I have a single requirement to launch a java application on startup as a service. The application is shipped in a file called jes.jar. It requires three arguments: a dotted quad IP address, an initial service port, and a translated service port. I can get the application running as a console command. Can someone point me to a site that documents how to script a sys V init.d style script so that I can run this as a daemon process? I tried copying a script in the age old fashion but I seem to be missing something(s). Lastly, I vaguely recall that there is a way to capture the pid of a program started in the shell but I cannot find any reference to it. Thanks for the history lessons, Bryan. This suggests to me a GCC flag -fForgive2.9xUsers which would accept syntax and grammar from code valid to the 2.9x compiler (warn rather than barf). This isn't the compat compiler/lib suite (which is a separate option), but is a grace-rather-than-pedantics approach to compiler evolution. Not necessarily... gcc 2.9x LOVES my code, and the program built under it runs like a champ. gcc 3.4 barfs on this same source code, so I see this as "Stoopidly Pedantic" on the part of the compiler-writers. Things that work and stop working because of a "better compiler" bring into question the definition of "better". If your program won't compile with a very stable GCC3, then you might want to fix the broken software rather than install an obsolete development environment, no? UPS tool ?

Hi all, I plan to upgrade some servers running good old RH7.2/7.3. Some of these machines' got UPS an I use nut to monitor them. I was very surprised to see that nut isn't included in RHEL 4.x (quite weird for an enterprise class distro). Is there any program I may use as a replacement for nut ? Or do I have to compile it by myself (I saw a nut SRPM was available for Fedora Core 4 so I guess it won't be hard to adapt it to CentOS 4.x). Thanks for your replies. Gilles.

Strange soundcard problem w/4.2

Hi there, I'm trying to repurpose an unused machine (athlon XP 3000+) for my young daughter to use. It's on a motherboard with a VIA KT880 chipset and VIA integrated soundcard (VIA 8237). The card seems to be detected during boot time and shows up in the system log, but when I try to actually use the sound card within Gnome, there's no sound. The device is detected, but there's no sound. So I figured this may be an "oddball" chipset, so I disabled the onboard sound device and installed a vanilla Soundblaster Live! card. Again, the card seems to be detected by the kernel at boot time, but there's no sound and the soundcard detection utility reports "no sound card detected." Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since my daughter is now camped at my expensive laptop so she can play tux racer (a great game for kids, BTW). :-) Cheers,

Exim on all interfaces

I have not set any local_interfaces values, as the default behaviour is to bind on all interfaces. CentOS 4.2 and VMWare

Has anyone successfully installed CentOS 4.2 within VMWare 5 and have it run successfully. I tried doing this last night, but after the install, it cannot boot. It hangs at the GRUB message. I have used CentOS 4.1 many times within VMWare without problems. I did a search and found some where people have had this problem, but not within VMWare. The problems seem to have been related to SCSI devices. I know VMWare allows you to choose between two types of SCSI interfaces, but I chose the default presented (for RedHat Enterprise 4). Maybe I need to use a different VM configuration? Derek

apt repository

Is there a problem with apt-get repo? i get 404 not found when i try to update the repositories? im using rpm http://mirror.centos.org for my repositories and here's the error of apt. a gotcha with cron and 4.2

the new cron in 4.2 activates the pam access module. if you have been using that to control ssh access or other things, now suddently cron is going to use it as well. this only seems to affect user crontabs and crontabs in /etc/cron.d. from some digging around i was able to determine that cron sets the tty to 'cron', so you can just add a line like: +:ALL:cron to /etc/security/access.conf and it will enable those cron jobs again. Apache won't start, semaphores exhausted

One of our systems run Apache 2.0.52 (httpd-2.0.52-12.2.ent.centos4 rpm). The kernel we're running is 2.6.9-11.ELsmp. After a few weeks of uptime, Apache refuses to start with the following error in error.log: [crit] (28)No space left on device: mod_jk: could not create jk_log_lock With Apache not running, there're a lot of semaphores left behind by Apache, e.g.: ------ Semaphore Arrays -------- key semid owner perms nsems 0x00000000 98304 root 600 1 0x00000000 131073 apache 600 1 0x00000000 163842 apache 600 1 0x00000000 196611 apache 600 1 0x00000000 229380 apache 600 1 0x00000000 786437 root 600 1 ... ... ... /proc/sys/kernel/sem has the following settings: 250 32000 32 128 Is this an Apache issue or is this a kernel issue? Why is Apache not releasing the semaphores? Thanks for any help.

OK - I only have one tape drive but a real problem these days backing up. With the decreasing price of USB Flash Memory Drives, I was wondering how I would go about creating a USB Flash Drive that could be used the same as CD 1 to install CentOS on my servers. Has anyone done this, and if so, can you tell me the procedure to make this work? Thanks!

CentOS mailing list, Thank you all for answering my questions and being so supportive over the last few months as I was running CentOS on my home machine. I have switched over to Ubuntu, and I will be devoting my learning efforts to that distribution from this point on. However, while I'm sure a new distribution will have the inevitable learning curve, a lot of the tips and tricks I learned here will definitely help me get a head start. Because a "good bye and thank you" message on it's own would not carry new information, I wanted to just offer an observation of mine which might help this list in communicating with future newbies who don't quite grasp CentOS objectives, as I did. It seems to me there is a division between a developer's focus on how things work, and a newbie's focus on results. Taking my recent situation with finding an MP3 player, I would look at PlayerA, and PlayerB, which both ran on CentOS. One had a great interface, and the other had a good tag editor. But I hoped to find a player that had both features together. Then I look on the web and discover PlayerC, which seems like it might carry both the features I want. I download it, but it doesn't work. I come to the list and ask why, and I'm advised that CentOS is an enterprise level distribution, and not meant for running cutting edge applications. So I'm confused. After all, PlayerC doesn't do anything that PlayerA and PlayerB don't already do on CentOS, it just happens to do them together. How, I wonder, am I doing anything "cutting edge", or that would threaten the stability of CentOS? It took me a while to realize that I was thinking about the results - playing MP3s, for example. But when developers were speaking about "cutting edge", they were speaking about the fact that the makers of the player were using exotic techniques which were incompatible with CentOS. Those techniques are opaque to me, so the miscommunication continued. So my parting advice is to suggest that the next time a newbie can't grasp why CentOS doesn't do what other distributions do, or why some applications don't work even though they are only doing something that other working applications do, that you explain the difference between results and methods. Had I seen that difference earlier, I might not have struggled with CentOS so long. It's clearly not the distribution for me. That's my suggestion, for whatever it's worth. I hope it can help with future newbies, as I would guess that I won't be the last to try CentOS. Good luck with making CentOS a preeminent enterprise class solution. Hi, I've just installed CentOS 4.2 I must recompile the kernel and for that i used to do a "yum install kernel-sourcecode". Now, it doesn't works anymore. In /usr/src/kernels/... compiling gives an error straight from the start. Where is now kernel's source code ? Warm Regards, Mário Gamito

Hi! A few days back ...I upgraded using yum update. I did this on 3 machines of which 2 of the machines are mirrors. I have no problems w/the other 2 machines which leads me to believe that the fault lies in 2.6 but rather I think I have a hard drive failure. while the system is trying to boot up. it goes to: grub stage 2....that's the first thing I seem to find outside of taking forever to find the drives. then when it is booting....lots of hdc errors here's an excerpt from /var/log/messages: ide: failed learn. I know, I probably don't have all the info that y'all probably need but I will surely get it and if someone would like to take this off the msg list, that would sure be ok as well. I swapped data cables w/others but this system still complains the same stuff. I think it's a hard drive but I want y'all to teach me how to really diagnose this. Also, say it's a hard drive. In this system, the raided drives are 1 maxtor 100gb and 1 wd 100gb....Now would it be possible to put a 200 gb in place of the faulty drive? OT: Apache Script Problem

I recently moved a web site from an old Windows NT machine running Apache to a server running CentOS 4.1. Everything is working fine on the site except for one perl script. I have the standard directory setup: /var/www/html /var/www/cgi-bin etc We had to change our scripts when we moved them because they had windows paths. We have a problem with one script called: contactp.pl It's located at: /var/www/cgi-bin [root@server cgi-bin]# pwd /var/www/cgi-bin [root@server cgi-bin]# ls -l: -rwxrwxrwx 1 apache root 1047 Oct 20 15:32 contactp.pl When the script is called I get a 500 Internal Server Error. The error log gives me the following two errors: [Thu Oct 20 15:43:35 2005] [error] (2)No such file or directory: exec of '/var/www/cgi-bin/contactp.pl' failed, referer: http://www.mysite.com/contactus.html [Thu Oct 20 15:43:35 2005] [error] Premature end of script headers: contactp.pl, referer: http://www.mysite.com/contactus.html The file is definitely there and apache owns it. I'm not sure what else to look for now. Anyone have any suggestions? I've googled for the premature headers error and I'm thinking it's because of the first error? Could be wrong. Other scripts in the same directory run fine, and I can run the script at the command line. Any help is appreciated. James

I'm trying to build driver for hpt374 raid controler on a new installation of contOS 4.2 followin the instroctions in this thread http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?viewmode=flat&order=DESC&… It says that I should run "yum install kernel-sourcecode" to get the files I need and it will create the path /usr/src/linux-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL which is needed. rebuilding mod_perl

If I say 'yum install mod_perl', on my CentOS-3 system, I get one built to work with the system's stock perl 5.8.0. I have built perl 5.8.7 and installed it in /usr/local/perl-5.8.7. How can I get the src rpm for mod_perl and build it against the newer perl? -- -ste

lvm over software raid error

Came across a strange problem, I have a software raid1 with LV sitting on top. When I try to mirror an existing LV to a new LV with the tar command I get these error messages. mount /dev/vg00/base.centos /mnt/orig mount /dev/vg00/test /mnt/new cd /mnt/orig tar cf - ./|(cd /mnt/new; tar xf - ) ... File shrank by 406815 bytes; padding with zeros ... Read error at byte 49152, reading 10240 bytes: Input/output error Do I have data corruption? If I removed the snapshots, will the padding errors disappear? RAID6 in production?

Is anyone using RAID6 in production? In moving from hardware RAID on my dual 3ware 7500-8 based systems to md, I decided I'd like to go with RAID6 (since md is less tolerant of marginal drives than is 3ware). I did some benchmarking and was getting decent speeds with a 128KiB chunksize. So the next step was failure testing. First, I fired off memtest.sh as found at <http://people.redhat.com/dledford/memtest.html>. Then, I did 'mdadm /dev/md0 -f /dev/sdo1', and it started to rebuild as it should. I cranked up /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min to 15000 so that it would reconstruct in a decent amount of time (the default of 1000 was leading to a 53 hour estimate for the recovery). But memtest.sh started kicking out errors (non-matching diffs). And then I got this: EXT3-fs error (device md0): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal Remounting filesystem read-only attempt to access beyond end of device md0: rw=0, want=28987566088, limit=4595422208 attempt to access beyond end of device md0: rw=0, want=28987566088, limit=4595422208 attempt to access beyond end of device md0: rw=0, want=28987566088, limit=4595422208 Needless to say it's not giving me that warm fuzzy feeling. The one caveat is that not all the members of my array were the same size -- one disk is 180GB while all the rest are 160GB. I'm going to test overnight with identically sized RAID members, but I also wanted to see if anyone else is using RAID6. Can't install CentOS4

Hi everyone, My email server is running CentOS 3 and I can't upgrade it to CentOS 4 using the CD's. At first I thought it was the old Megaraid card (that's no longer supported), so I replaced that with a new card. I've tried ISO's from CentOS 4, 4.1 and now 4.2 which I've tested and booted in other machines. Just not this one. I've never had a problem like this before so I'm not sure what information you need to help me debug this. The server stops right after the line about detecting the AGP video. I have tried booting with noprobe and some other kernel options but nothing seems to work. Please let me know what else I can try to get it to boot. Update 4.2 broke LVM

I upgrade using YUM my CentOS 4 system the other night. I was noticing that X wasn't coming up because of a gdk_thread issue (actually, the window manager wasn't starting. I cold get X to start from the command line). Surprised that it took 587MB of downloads, since I was current as of September 29th. When rebooting, I was forced to the login prompt, because my LVM group with my home directory couldn't be mounted. I'm not very familiar with LVM, I had only used it to make one consolidated directory for my 100 and 160GB hard drives. Though lvmdisplay could show the volume group, fsck and mount didn't like it. Oh, and the upgrade didn't fix the thread problem. Anyone have an idea whether it was just me having the LVM problem? I'm currently reinstalling CentOS4 (pre update 1) from CD. At least when running diskdruid, I could mount the LVM group. So, after my install, assuming it is still visible when booting from hard drive, I'll backup those drives before running YUM again. I'f the window manager doesn't start up again, I'll reformat on my next install.

4.1 being dropped from mirrors

Hi guys, Just to let everyone know that the CentOS 4.1 tree will be dropped from the mirrors shortly, since 4.2 has now been out for a week. If anyone has their yum config's hardwired to point at 4.1 - those config's will now stop working. The 4.1 repo's will be available at http://vault.centos.org/ once they are removed from http://mirror.centos.org/ ( and all external mirrors ).
