Newbie : Tar question

How did I overwrite a file to in "tar" file. For example I have file "backup.tar" in my home directory, which contains two file "x.sh" and "y.sh" I made some changes to one of the file "x.sh" and want to update the " backup.tar" I use tar -uvf, but this appends at the end of the tar file, but what I want is replace the file. The only way, I know of right now is, delete the file by issuing the following command tar --delete --file=backup.tar x.sh and then adding the file again using tar -uvf backup.tar x.sh Is there a better way of doing this, on a single command. Easiest virtual mail setup?

Hi. I wish to configure a CentOS 4.1 box to be a mail server. I'd like a setup with virtual mail accounts, using eg. exim, courier and mysql. Do any applications exist that already combine this in an easy to deploy manner (yum as far as possible)? I've seen XAMS.org but that's discontinued. Br, Morten

I had the the duuplicate rpms happen on a x86_64 install and rpm didn't crash to cause it. I basically listed all installed rpms and removed the older versions of the rpms that were dupilcated and did another yum update and all seems ok. Hi, I asked yum to update all packages on my CentOS 4.1 system and glibc was among them. Yum crashed in the middle and now I've some packages installed twice: 2 zlib-1.2.1.2-1.2 2 ncurses-5.4-13 2 mysql-4.1.10a-2.RHEL4.1 2 libstdc++-3.4.4-2 2 libstdc++-3.4.3-22.1 2 libselinux-1.19.1-7 2 libgcc-3.4.4-2 2 libgcc-3.4.3-22.1 2 glibc-2.3.4-2.9 2 glibc-2.3.4-2.13 2 e2fsprogs-1.35-12.2.EL4 2 device-mapper-1.01.04-1.0.RHEL4 2 device-mapper-1.01.01-1.RHEL4 Running yum again it complains about a package conflict: Finished Transaction Test Transaction Check Error: file /usr/share/man/man1/asn1parse.1ssl.gz from install of openssl-0.9.7a-43.4 conflicts with file from package openssl-0.9.7a-43.2 This system was beatiful now I've that, ugh :( Any idea about how to fix that ? Hi all, i am using a laptop for my work. When i need to go to some customers I need to change my tcp/ip configuration every time (phisical interface and wirelss interface). Most of them do not have a dhcpd server on their networks, and i need to this changes by hand. For this pourpose i make some scripts to do this changes automatically. All works ok, But i have problems with resolv.conf (postfix depends and another soft that I use too). How can i update this file like resolvconf (http://packages.debian.org/stable/net/resolvconf) does on debian/ubuntu distros ??? Can i use ifcfg-eth config files to do this?? Hi CentOS, I just completed the yum update to 4.2, hoping to get included with libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.4) for the x86_64. I need the libs to run cinelerra: [ryan@dorje]# cinelerra cinelerra: /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.4' not found (required by cinelerra) An: "rpm -q -i --provides -l libstdc++-3.4.4-2" returns: (A bunch of stuff....) libstdc++.so.6()(64bit) libstdc++.so.6(CXXABI_1.3)(64bit) libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4)(64bit) libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.1)(64bit) libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.2)(64bit) libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.3)(64bit) (A bunch more of stuff....) but no _3.4.4 :( I downloaded the 25 meg, compressed .srpm of gcc and started reading the docs. I was hoping to compile my own, but that seems to be quite the endeavor. Anybody have one (I've searched all the .rpm search sites)? How about any hints on getting just that addition to the lib suite? CentOS-4/beta/preview version immediate availability

Hi, I've had this like since last saturday or something. I don't seem to be getting it to beta.centos.org tho, so i'll just make it public thru the channels i control. ftp://centos.upi.iki.fi/pub/centos/4.2beta/isos/sparc/ There is ISOs and .torrents Know yourself out and try it out please. If you have something less than Ultra Sparc, you're out of luck with this as it's only targetted for Ultra Sparcs (ie. 64bit hardware). I've tested the installation to - U10 - U30 - Netra T1405 (quad) - Netra/X1 U30/UPA graphical installation didn't start, but it's something to be fixed before actual release. I'll post hte updates on tree that yum should use by default when i do have that tree (as in place to push updates). CentOS 3.5 to 3.6 yum dependency issues

When I do a yum update I get a couple of dependency issues: I see this one on every box I try to upgrade.. Package nptl-devel needs glibc-devel = 2.3.2-95.33, this is not available. I've only seen this one a couple of times.. Package up2date needs rpm >= 4.2.3-24_nonptl, this is not available. Tim

Yum Dependency errors

Greetings, This is a new install on CentOs 4.1 dvd from a couple weeks ago. The initial yum updates worked fine but now There are about 15 things that get dependency errors and yum will not install the updates. Rebuild the RPM database, removed /var/cache/yum/* , yum update yum for the latest version and the errors still exist. When you query the rpm database the dependency are installed. Can not get remote X connections to work on CentOS 4.1

I've encountered a strange problem in CentOS 4.1. I've never had this problem before, and I've been using X Windows since 1990, but I can't get remote X connections to work: $ hostname host00 $ echo $DISPLAY :0.0 $ xhost + access control disabled, clients can connect from any host $ rsh host01 $ xdpyinfo -d host00:0.0 xdpyinfo: unable to open display "host00:0.0" Both hosts are running CentOS 4.1 and SELinux is disabled. I know I can get this to wok with ssh, but that is not the point. Also, it's not a host name resolution problem, as substituting the IP address in the above command gives the same error. Finally, note that there is about a 3-4 second delay before the error message appears. Any recent changes in X that I am unaware of? Alfred

Upgrade=Broken x86_64

I just completed the upgrade of everything, and after a reboot, I have got some broken software. I am getting error messages from the NCAR command language that "Specified Workstation is NOT Open. In addition, a system call to opngks_() could not open "wrf_mass_plots.ncgm" which is the file it needs to read to produce the metafile. What changed that would cause software to think the workstation is not open? Next question.. is it possible to undo the upgrade, or would I be better off doing a clean install of system files should this breakage not be repairable with simplicity? Sam

Perl modules not working properly when installed via yum?

Hello, all - I've been dealing with this problem for quite a while, and most of my solutions have just been dirty hacks. I'd like to find an appropriate solution. I've installed perl modules in the past via yum. Sure, they get installed - but none of my perl applications can find them. I know that this is a long outstanding issue, because I have yet to find a real solution. Since I know nothing of perl, I'll go ahead and ask the stupid questions here. Is @INC defined anywhere in the system, where I can add paths to it, to include additional modules? Is inclusion of modules via @INC recursive, or does each path need to be defined seperately? I've tried to define $PERL5LIB, as I was told that this would be prepended to @INC, but this does not seem to be the case. Anyone want to lend a hand with this? I would greatly appreciate it. IP Management SW

Not a CentOS specific question, but I'll try anyway. :) I've decided I need a proper IP Management solution. In a perfect world I'd like something like QIP or NetID, but I have a feeling that's too much so ask, so I'll go for DHCP/DNS management. :) There's alot of different opensource products out there, but I'd rather get recommendations than spend days configuring all of them just for evaluation. :) Regards, Harald

The lates version of SAMBA is 3.0.10 for Centos yet the latest release from Sambas website is 3.0.20b? Where would I be able to find a more up to date package for Centos that has all the new features as well as the security fixes? The only negative thing I've noticed so far is a ton of messages in /var/log/messages from dbus regarding the audit system. At this point, I don't know what they mean but nothing critical seems to be broken. ATI Radeon 7000 and DRI

OK, so I've got two PCs with Radeon 7000. One has PCI version of the card, and the other has AGP version of the card. Before update to 4.2, I had DRI enabled on both of them, and it worked stable for me (lucky me). After update to 4.2, the PC with AGP version of the card does not load radeon kernel module anymore, and it seems DRI related options from xorg.conf file are ignored. On the PC with PCI version of the card radeon module gets loaded and everything still seems to work nicely and stable. I remember some talk about DRI being disabled when Radeon 7000 is detected on Alpha (or PPC, not sure), and this being CentOS specific modification. Has this modification by any chance accidentally leaked into i386 packages? Or is this something that came from upstream?

Java Error - 4.1 - JDK 1.3.1_02

Hi I posted a message some time ago regarding getting JDK 1.3.1_02 running on CentOS4.1 - I mamaged to get this to run by installing the Oracle patch from metalink. Security: should I be concerned?

Two things have been weighing on my mind regarding security issues. The first is that when I downloaded the CentOS 4.1 ISO images, I could not get the sums to match even using different downloads from different mirrors. I decided that that I was doing something wrong and decided to trust the images. So far no regrets. But I am concerned that I get it right the next time. I thought I had read everything carefully and I also had a small amount of experience with them in the past. Decided eventually maybe they just hadn't been updated (this was about a month or so ago, IIRC?). Can one post the command used to gen the numbers so I can use the correct parameters next time? TIA My second concern is with security update announcements. For all the announcers but one (IIRC) I get "Invalid signature" displayed (using Evolution). I would ask "Should I be concerned?", but the answer is self-evident in security circles. So instead, I'll ask if this is acceptable in the official CentOS and I can continue to rely on their stuff in their opinion. Again, TIA And, please, no comments on the irony inherent in this. We don't want to be un-subscribed, otherwise castigated or fan the flames of possible list moderation. I know "the powers that be" will appreciate our cooperation. Last TIA

Hi Default sendmail setup on a centos4.1 box - I need to send report type mails from this machine under cron. The SMTP relay i need to use requires user/pass so how can i send user/pass smtp auth from within the 'default' sendmail install? Anyone know what to change in sendmail.mc thanks

Missing In PATH

I'm a newb to linux so please be patient. Running CentOS 4. Using Bash. I'm not sure what happened, but now for some reason /sbin, /usr/sbin, and /usr/local/sbin are all missing from the path. I am su'd as root. I've tried several different methods to put this back including: PATH="/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/hom e/cholland/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/sbin" export PATH=$PATH:/sbin export PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/sbin All of these do add the directories to the path until I logout and log back in. Then they are gone again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Cody

CentOS 4.1 - Hang on boot

Hi Trying to install 4.1 on a chassis that has an Intel hardware RAID card in it - RedHat 7.3 was fine on this box. On boot the install runs through until i opt to skip the media test - After that it 'loading gdth driver' and the system hangs Any ideas as google is not my friend thanks

Thank you for the information. We are starting a new project on a dedicated development server. We therefore are looking at designing for v.8 from the outset, anticipating that this will be the common production version by the time the project is completed. I had previously built an early v8 release of Postgresql on CentOS 4, but that machine suffered a catastrophic disk failure and the work was lost. I was hoping, apparently vainly, that in the meantime a yummified rpm package had become available. Ah, well. Back to building the future, one bit at a time. Well, I'm a recent convert from WBEL. My biggest concern with CentOS is that the community here seems to want to be more than a recompile of RHEL. But WBEL is floundering, what with Katrina and Rita, and there really being only 1 developer behind it, etc. I offer an automated shell script to switch from WBEL4 to CentOS4 (easy, it's hosted on my home DSL line!) Hi, I have been using CenOS-4.1 quite sometime now on this laptop. Under CentOS I am having a problem during boots (soft or hard boots) that I never had with any other Linux distros including Fedora 4. I have to reboot the laptop twice as the first boot returns blank screen and hangs when it attempts to bring up login screen. I tested this a few times, there is no disk activity or any sign of OS activity.. In the end I switch the laptop off and start again.. It works fine perfectly in the second boot. Not sure what happens in the first boot (though all startup processes return OK till it gets hung) How can I diagnose this problem..? Is this a known problem..? Is there any workarounds..etc ? Radio software

Hi List, Does anyone know of any type of radio tuner software available for CentOS in either 32 or 64-bit versions? The card is an ATI X600. I've got the video driver from ATI installed, but they do not have any other user level software available. I think I remember reading something about some software being available for the BT chipset, but I'm a tad out of date on that. Also, while in my thoughts, who is the individual responsible for the screensaver(s) creation? I have a fantastic idea I'd love to pass to whoever does the coding. Thanks, -- Snowman

Update or not?

After reading all the problems with the x86-64 update, I'm in a quandry as to update this machine or not. Nothing that I am aware of is broken, and at least everything I use works. This is NOT a production machine, but it does have some important software that needs to run twice daily, and I sure don't want to break things for that. If upgrade is not necessary, how do I go about turning off that red exclaimation point on the upper menu bar? Just tell it to ignore everything? -- Snowman

Kernel Audit Messages

Since updating to 4.2 my Opteron server has been flooded by messages like: audit(1129565701.837:155): user pid=4700 uid=0 auid=4294967295 msg='PAM session open: user=root exe="/usr/sbin/crond" (hostname=?, addr=?, terminal=cron result=Success)' to both /var/log/messages and the kernel ring buffer. Looks like they are being generated by cron jobs being run on the server. Does anyone know how to turn these messages off or to redirect them? Kirk

Centos 4.1 Boot Problem on ML570 with Compag 5300 Storage Array Raid Controller

Looking at the console, I got: ---snip Setting Hostname: OK Checking root filesystem: /dev/cciss/c0d0p10 is mounted, e2fsck cannot continue, aborting failed *** an error occurred during the file system check *** Dropping you to a shell; The system will reboot *** when you leave the shell Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) ---snip So I did what any good sysadmin would do- I grabbed the boot disk and rebooted the box in rescue mode and ran e2fsck on the /root partition. No errors came up and rebooting the box resulted in the same error! So I dug a little, and found that putting some comments in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit would circumvent *the error* and allow the box to boot. logwatch and yum

Not sure if anybody noticed that logwatch is not reporting any stuff from /var/log/yum.log file. This is due to date format in log file (yum uses standard syslog date format, while logwatch script expects US date format). It seems that upstream doesn't ship with yum at all, so I guesss the problem was never detected there (and in most likeliness not applicable to it, although the upstream logwatch package does have yum scripts). The problem can be corrected by either modifying yum to use US date format for the log file, or by modifying logwatch to correctly parse yum.log file using standard date format. Don't have any Fedora Core box handy, so I can't check in what format is Fedora's yum.log file. I guess the best way would be to do whatever Fedora Core does (since that is the closest to the upstream).
