HowTo copy a Logical Volume to another LV

hello all, Hoping for some help on copying Logical Volumes. I would like to copy an existing LV to a newly formed LV. I don't want to do a snapshot of an existing LV. Only way I've seen is to mount the to LV and: mount /dev/vg00/lv00 /mnt/orig mount /dev/vg00/lv01 /mnt/copy cd /mnt/orig tar cf - ./ |(cd /mnt/copy; tar xf - ) Is there a LV tool to do this? Or an option used with lvcreate, such as --autobackup? Or maybe pvmove, but that seems more for moving To LV from PV or vesa versa? Thanks in advance, Jesse Waters

Why not use yum mirrorlist= instead of baseurl= in CentOS-Base.repo

Currently the default yum configuration references mirror.centos.org. When yum looks up the IP address it finds several but it will only try one and fail if that server is down or does not have the headers for whatever reason. If yum were to reference a mirrorlist it would skip servers that fail and keep trying them all until it finds one that works or exhausts all the mirrors. Centos would host a file on their web server for each repository that has a list of mirror baseurls. I created a test script to generate mirrorlists from the mirror.centos.org DNS lookup and changed yum to reference the local files that were generated as a mirrorlist= and it worked. The non-synced servers that did not have the correct directories setup were skipped and it found servers that did work. Are there any plans to provide a centos-yumconf rpm that links to a mirrorlist on centos.org instead of just using the DNS round-robin of mirror.centos.org which will cause yum to fail if it happens to get an IP that does not work? Centos would just need to change the mirrorlist file on the main website to change mirrors for clients. Hey Guys, I need to run PHP4/PHP5 from the same physical server. I have apache + php5 currently. Im thinking of creating a new apache and php4 from srpms and installing It all in say /opt/apache_php4 and then running it from its own IP since The server has two external IP addresses available. Just wondering if anybody here has needed to do the same in the past and what did you do to achieve running them both from the same server? Thanks, Wayne

CentOS Network Exception

Hi, The following exception occurred. The system was upgraded from RedHat 9 Legacy (updated regularly using Fedora Legacy project) to CentOS 4.1 (Linux 2.6.9-11). When I installed yum and yum-conf, I had a problem of yum not getting $releasever. Thus I hand edited /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo $releasever to 4. I did the full update using yum. Now up2date gets the following exception. I don't understand why it is looking for CNS-CA-CERT. Possible to install centos keeping folders intact?

Hiya all, just going to do a couple of quick conversions from redhat to centos, an going to back up the folders anyway. But basically just wondering if there's a way to install centos and keep some rather large folders intact without having to backup/restore them. They are based from the root folder, i.e /home but they aren't on a separate partition and want to do a total new install from cd on it. No problem if there is no way, just thought I'd ask to see if anyones ever gone down that route if it is (and yes bad partitioning in the first place! Partly for exactly this reason and others). I found the best way to get yum working was to manually upgrade yum along with its dependencies and then do a yum upgrade to upgrade to CentOS 4.2. With the high traffic, it still bombs a few times. But it doesn't take as long. The new Yum 2.4 is way faster than Yum in CentOS 4.1. Paul

4.2 upgrade and kernels

Just curious about kernel requirements after the upgrade. I've been running the 2.6.9-11.106.unsupported kernel for some time. Now I see that the base kernel is up to 2.6.9-22.EL. Are there any plans to upgrade the unsupported kernel? Should I be using the newer kernel after the upgrade? Does it make any difference? Not trying to be pushy; just looking for information. Trying to get my wife's emails out of a proprietary format and into mbox for use on our local box. Doing some major file munging. In a test email the following doesn't work. Good book on setting up procmail/spamassassin?

Anyone know of one? Is that O'Reilly book good? I need to get my fetchmail setup with some good filtering in procmail pronto and I can't remember how to set it up and compose the recipes properly. I'm willing to just buy a book at this point to make the spam and unwanted emails go away. Any advice or direction is appreciated. Of course I'll Google, but I was hoping someone here might have the answer off the top of their head, so I could get something going tonight. Preston

Can't access files at localhost

I've created a symlink inside my /var/www/html/ folder called "web", which is points to a my /home/dave/web directory. Inside that directory, I created a folder for my web site called "website". I thought I should be able to access that web site through FireFox by going to either: httpd://localhost/web/website ... or: http://localhost/web/website ... but I just get errors. It says that httpd is not a registered protocol, and the connection to localhost/web/website was refused. Am I not addressing these sites correctly? Have I muddled the directory trees or http protocols somehow? Just to be clear, the directory with all the html and php files is: /home/dave/web/website The symlink is: /var/www/html/web Dave

I have change the /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources to a local repo. All the updated programs seems to appear, but there are nothing in them (158kb to download), and when downloading headers to solve dependencies it stops. Have I missed one config file? kai

How CentOS Mirrors Work

Can someone tell me how the mirroring process works? Like, is any portion of bandwidth useful, or should something like a full T-1 be considered a minimum useful addition? I guess I'm wondering if when I'm doing updates, when one RPM is coming in, if it is coming in from one mirror server at a time or if it is a cumulative situation? So, like would an additional 50k capped connection would be helpful or just be a slow update connection? Best, John Hinton

DoS Attack

Yesterday, I had a DoS attack on a php/mysql webpage which uses a lot of resources. I have learned today, as a for instance, in the last hour, about 3000 requests for that page were made by 610 different servers, mostly from 'odd' places... China, Russia, Poland, Turkey... the usual suspects from my experience. The bottom line is this... I hit server loads of 142 yesterday!!! And the server never crashed! Yeah, it might as well have been dead, but it wasn't. Yes, some things shut down temporarily... but the machine never went down. This is a remote server, about an hour away.. It took about 20 minutes for my mysqld stop command to execute, but with time it did respond! I'm extremely impressed by this and just wanted to pass this 'trivia' along. EL rocks! Best, John Hinton

rpmbuild a kernel module

We've been down this path before and I got things working but am not self-sufficient which is where I would like to be. Problem is new kernel 2.6.9-22 and I need 2 modules installed that aren't part of the RHEL kernels. 1 - megaraid for older non-supported megaraid cards. I have the source and can compile the modules and make them work no problem. We have archives in the mail list for that. 2 - appletalk - previously, it was suggested that I get the module from esmith which I did and it has worked fine but they have yet to update to the new kernel (which they will undoubtedly do). I'm trying out different music players. One that looks promising is called Quod Libet: http://www.sacredchao.net/quodlibet I downloaded the tar file and attempted to install it. I got this message: [dave@localhost quodlibet-0.13.1]$ ./quodlibet.py E: You need GTK+ 2.6 and PyGTK 2.6 or greater. E: You have GTK+ 2.4.13 and PyGTK 2.4.0. E: Please upgrade GTK+/PyGTK. I tried a YUM update, but it didn't say anything about new versions of GTK or PyGTK. What am I not understanding about this situation? Dave

I need a package updated...

...Where do I go? Hi please forgive me if I missed something obvious, but I've been reading and searching for a couple days to no avail. I'm trying to get the latest cinelerra running on CentOS4.1 on a dual Xeon machine. I need: cinelerra: /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.4' not found (required by cinelerra) (x86_64) and apparently the latest available is: libstdc++-3.4.3-22.1 (x86_64) So, my question is, who maintains these packages? Is there a way to request an upgrade? It is easy to build your own? Or am I opening up a can of worms. If so, where can I turn to for info? I have found libstdc++-3.4.4-2 but it's for ia64. Updates not catching up ?

Hi, I have downloaded and installed centos 4.1 from DVD and I a little confused with the update procedure. The faq from the centos.org site mentions something like 72 hrs (or less) from one security update to goes from the sources.rpm from rh to centos. I was cheking rh's site (https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/rhel4as-errata.html) and saw one update to mysql (https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/rhel4as-errata.html) that I can't get using yum upgrade. For example. My mysql is mysql.i386 0:4.1.10a-2.RHEL4.1 and rh is mysql-4.1.12-3.RHEL4.1.src.rpm.. I am using the standard yum.conf/yum.repos.d. Is this a mirror problem or it is taking longer than expected for the updates to be available ? tks.

way to keep program in memory

Is there a way to specify that program X should be kep in memory and not swap it out? I have a program that takes some time to load and as long as you keep using it its responsive but if after sometime its not in use and now I use it it has a slow response till it gets swapped back in. The box in question has 1 GIG ram and its not running much else just this program really. Just looking for a way to keep it in RAM. Thanks, Jerry

Samba Setup Fails or Samba Access Fails

I recently installed centos 4.1 and I'm trying to get samba working on it to serve windows boxes on a lan. I configured samba on the centos server using the graphical samba server configuration tool, which is similar to the samba setup on redhat 9 that I have successfully setup in the past. I setup samba user names and passwords with the same user names and passwords used on the win boxes. I'm not able to access any shared samba folders from win boxes on the lan. I disabled the firewall on the centos server using the graphical security level configuration tool but I still can't access the samba shares. When I use a win box to connect to samba it will not complete the connection. It acts like the firewall is still running. I disabled iptables on the centos server using the graphical services configuration tool but I still can't access the samba shares. I can ping the centos server from linux and windows boxes on the lan. The centos server can ping other machines on the lan and can access the internet. When I try to telnet into the centos server from win and linux boxes on the lan I get these messages: On linux boxes: "Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused" On win boxes: Connecting To 192.168.1.2...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23. No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. Can anyone tell me what Im doing wrong or what I need to do to get samba working on centos? Logrotate Issue

I keep logfiles for each of our hosted domains in their root/logs directory. Each month, logrotate runs but fails to recreate the logfiles after this rotation. I've noted that a restart of Apache fixes this. The issue is Webalizer doesn't have log files to work from for a day to several days depending on whatever the heck it is that seems to recreate them like on Sunday following the start of a new month. Perhaps my storage of the logs in a 'semi-non-standard' location is causing this? I sure would like to have some input into a best solution. I really don't like automatic restarts of Apache, but if there is no other option, I'll do that. Anybody had this issue and come up with a good cure? Thanks, John Hinton

List, I grabbed the sensors-applet file, and assumed there would be some note about how to execute it or add it to the panel. Nada.. in the README, there is an indication of ./configure --prefix=/usr and that's it. From what I read on a web page about it, and the screenshots, there should be something to configure the values. Heck, I can't even find the file now that its installed.. how does one go about getting the applet up and running? This is the x86-64 version if that matters..... Thanks... -- Snowman

Hi Bryan, Thanks for the reply. That was my first post to the list and sorry if my next comments seem too hard but... My idea to move from fedora to centos was trying to get a stable distribution that I can afford with long term plans for support. Fedora works fine for me but it's focus on bleeding edge tends to leave "old" (1 year-old) releases without "strong" support. They have the legacy but even that stop a while. On the other hand wait a week for a security update come from rh to centos seems too much. Some may argue that I can always grab the src myself and compile/install but that is not the point here.
