Looking for some recommendations for applications on CentOS (MP3, FTP)

Last time I asked for some recommendations on this list, I was told about some great software that I hadn't been able to find myself, so I'd like to ask again. I've been having a hard time finding software that satisfies in the following 2 areas: 1. MP3 player and play list manager. Something that can ideally generate smart playlists based on MP3 tags. (I've tried XMMS, Amarok, and Rhythmbox so far) 2. A GUI ftp application. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Dave

Upgrading kernel

So here's my questions. 1. If I install Kernel manually (downloading latest kernel), is the .config file on my disc and can I use it so my starting point is the setup for this pc? Is this the one? /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-11.EL-i686/.config 2. There is a routine for upgrading a upgraded kernel with the rpm tool, is it available a upgraded kernel for Centos 4.1 or can I use latest fedora kernel? 3. I read some place how to make a kernel the rh way or something (making a rh kernel from the kernel.org kernel) Has someone a good routine for this? Small pointers and links would be appreciated. Spec. and info CentOS 4.1 – amd64 athlon s754 Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.9-11.EL #1 Wed Jun 8 16:59:52 CDT 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux I have been running 64bit and 32 bit back and forward a couple of times on my desktop and ended up going back to 32 bit. Even thou I now 32 bit programs run on 64 bit, I need Java fully supported. My concern is that I believe that I visually can see some difference in performance and that the 64 bit seems to be a little more stable and faster. My impression nothing more, programs don't hang as long etc. Therefore I would like to upgrade my Kernel to see if this will help me. kai

pointers for using CentOS box as filter for children

greetings has anyone here setup a CentOS box to use as a home or business gateway for children through young adults or otherwise? i realize this is a generalized question and that iptables and many other things exist that could be implemented. im looking for a way to give the youngster the benefit of the doubt and allow them to "obey God/parents" first before they have to be totally restricted after having been disobedient. specifically we could do it two ways. one is, that which is not expressly permitted is denied... and i would prefer not to have to do it that way. it is too easy and may not allow for the child to choose to be obedient to God/parents. the other seems like it might be better, that which is not expressly denied is permitted... YET i want to make sure of only a few things if possible... how can i keep the youngster from using an IM program and how to make sure they are not transferring files larger that say 100k, ie no large music files etc? only small pics or homework things etc. can one hit a moving IM program protocol port target that recognizes the packets and shut it down? also, what packages out there are people using that have time based restrictions, like until 11pm or other configs? thanks - rh -- Robert Hanson - Abba Communications Computer & Internet Services www.abbacomm.net

Boot hanging and app for ham radio

Jim, Thanks for the suggestions. I think you hit the nail on the head with the nvidia card. X runs great with no obvious problems. I only need to get one more app runing and it is for ham radio. I am trying to compile a app called soundmodem. It interfaces the computer with a ham radio for packet operations. When I compile it I get errors telling me xml is not available. In my search for xml I have found that xml is replaced with xml2. I tried changing the source calls for xml with xml12 but it failed with modules not being present, and none of the names that it was looking for were not system modules. But I will get it going somehow. The app will be used by Emergency Services in the county where I live. Thanks for your help on the X problem. Dick

Reconstructing duplicate lvm

Hi All, Basically, I have an upgrade script for a system that breaks md mirrors and then constructs a chroot from the broken off members (i.e in this case partitions on /dev/sdb) and does the upgrade in this chroot. The end result is that until the reboot applications on this system can remain running while the chroot is being updated (much hand waving at this point). This works fine if LVM riding on top of md does not enter the equation. Now I have to contend with LVM, and it occured to me that after the mirror was broken I would in this chroot I would need to somehow reconstruct all the LVM stuff (pv's, vg's and lv's) with the pv now being a partition on /dev/sdb instead of some md device, because the current volume group was built on top of an md device for a physical volume and thus would only give me the active system no matter what I tried (or not work at all). So how does one do this without destroying data? And futhermore am I not seeing things clearly and am missing some important point? Thanks...james

Boot hanging with rhgb

Hello I have installed Centos-4.1 and love it over Fedora or Mandriva. A big thank you to all the hands and minds that have put together a very good distribution. However I do have a problem when I boot with rhgb enabled in grub.conf. The system hangs at the end loading IE(when the bar is full). I can get bye in either of two ways. The first is to switch to a virtual console before the system hangs and the other is to remove the rhgb option in grub.conf. I would ask for any comments on how to trouble shoot this problem so it can be fix. Or if it is not important please tell me and I will remove the option from grub.conf. As in, is it worth waiting and saving myself the later hassle extra downloads? Compile error

A bit off topic, but having trouble again with the 64-bit libs when trying to compile this short fortran code to build a shared object. Can anyone offer an explaination of what is meant by the relocation bit, and how to fix it? I've tried the -fPIC, but apparently I either didn't have it in the right place or it does not work. Be glad to take this offline if somone could help me. Here's the output from the compile.... centos on 64M 350Mhz pentimum II

All, I have an old computer 64M 350Mhz pentium II. centos os 4.1 installs on it fine. however on boot it says low memory and it kills certain processes. httpd or sendmail. I have a 2GIG swap and I did a chkconfig XXX off on a few things like xfs, nfs, httpd, kudzu. My old 2.4 kernel used to run in 4M with a swap... I had recompiled the kernel (took a while) to enable the cyclades module. Any suggestions on running with low memory, thanks, Jerry

LM_SENSORS

Sorry if this has been around many times before, but I've done quite a bit of reading and searching for some type of human readable guide for setting up the lm_sensors for hardware monitoring. I've dorked around with the stuff in the system here, but after looking at the /etc/sensors.conf, I don't think I want to delve into that and try to pull out the right group of settings. It is definately a bit intimidating. So, is there any other software already written or in use for hardware monitoring that does not require a PhD to set up? The current sensors displays both the ISA and smbus readings, but none are even remotely close. The board uses thermistors for temp, which is mainly what I want to monitor. -- Snowman

Hi list, I have the choice to use RHEL4 or Centos4.x on a Dell PowerEdge2850 who is linked to an AX100 storage system. My question is: does the QLA200 (the pci fiber channel card) driver will work on CentOS 4.1 . For now the card is listed like this on CentOS 4.1: --- #lspci 09:04.0 Fibre Channel: QLogic Corp.: Unknown device 6312 (rev 03) --- What kind of modification must/can I do to the original RPM driver for it to work on CentOS? Am I stuck to use RHEL? Thanks for any advice.

Iptables Rpm Missing Modules

The current build of iptables does not appear to include some modules. Among these are ipt_recent.so, a very handy module in deflecting the current flurry of sshd dictionary attacks. Lineox appears to have the same problem. This is because the RedHat source rpm spec file is not explicit in the kernel directory location and that omission affects these few modules. Required changes in the spec file are in bold and italics (everywhere there is a /usr just replace it by /usr/src/linux-2.4): make COPT_FLAGS="$OPT" KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/linux-2.4 LIBDIR=/%{_lib} make COPT_FLAGS="$OPT" KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/linux-2.4 LIBDIR=/%{_lib} iptables- save iptables-restore make COPT_FLAGS="$OPT" KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/linux-2.4 LIBDIR=/%{_lib} ip6tables-save ip6tables-restore make install DESTDIR=%{buildroot} KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/linux- 2.4 BINDIR=/sbin LIBDIR=/%{_lib} MANDIR=%{_mandir} %if %{build_devel} make install-devel DESTDIR=%{buildroot} KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/linux-2.4 BINDIR=/sbin LIBDIR=%{_libdir} MANDIR=%{_mandir} To fix this yourself, first download the iptables source rpm, install it, modify the spec (/usr/src/redhat/SPECS/iptables.spec) and run rpmbuild -ba /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/iptables.spec . Lost my menu options again - KDE messes with Gnome?

This was a problem I had a while back. I lost the "Preferences" menu item in my "Applications" menu in Gnome. After much discussion, the following commands got my "Preferences" menu item back, along with all the applications inside of it: rpm -e redhat-artwork redhat-menus --nodeps --allmatches yum install redhat-artwork redhat-menus But... For some reason it isn't working this time. My "Preferences" option in my application menu is gone, and I don't even know why it left. And doing the commands above aren't getting them back. Actually, I have some suspicion as to why I've lost my "Preferences" option in my "Applications" menu. Last time this happened, it happened after I installed Amarok and ended up with a bunch of KDE settings I didn't want. This time, I installed Quanta, which required some KDE libraries, but it didn't seem to cause as much chaos as last time. However, the implications are that for some reason, having any KDE programs seems to affect my Gnome options. What's up with that? Dave

mkinitrd-4.2.1.3-1 unsuitable for 2.6.13+ kernels?

Hi all, I have a Opteron-machine with the MPT SCSI-controller (Symbios 53c1030). At least in i386-mode, mkinitrd does not seem to build a usable initrd for 2.6.13.x (.3 tested) with this kernel. With 2.6.12.6 it works fine. I have not tested this in x86_64 -mode yet. The symptom is that mptbase and mptscsih load, but mptscsih does not discover any controllers nor drives, and things like Booting the kernel. Red Hat nash version 4.1.18 starting mkrootdev: lable / not found mount: error 2 mounting ext3 mount: error 2 mounting none switchroot: mount failed : 22 umount : /initrd/dev failed : 22 kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init occur. I have been informed that there are changes to the mpt-driver options between 2.6.12 and 2.6.13, and that part of the menuconfig-screens does indeed look different. So - are there any plans for an mkinitrd upgrade, either from CentOS or RH? Alternatively, is there a workaround for this problem? Paranoid Firewalling

After reading this article: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/08/31/blocking_chinese_ip_addresses/ I got to thinking that there is really no reason for *any* traffic to hit my servers that comes from anywhere outside North America. So I wrote the perl script at the end of this posting to extract selected IP ranges posted at iana.org and convert them into iptables rules blocking any traffic from those ranges. I'd like comments on this. I know it's not perfect as there are both corporate and 'various registries' address ranges that aren't covered but it's a start. Since my company web site is hosted elsewhere but we are doing the DNS, I put in the exceptions for DNS. In my ten or so years of administering Linux servers, following the usual security precautions has been sufficient: closing unused ports, keeping up to date on patches, limiting permissions and logins, etc. I've never had a system broken into. Centos 4.1 & ReiserFS

Hi, I'm upgrading my mail server tomorrow from CentOS 3 to CentOS 4.1. And I'd like to use ReiserFS this time around since everyone says it performs much better with smaller files (all the mail is in Maildir's instead of mbox'es). Right now I have a pretty basic filesystem layout: /boot, swap, and /. Am I making the correct assumption that I can't install CentOS with the CentOSPlus kernel? So I need to split it up: /boot -> 128MB ext3 swap / -> 4 GB ext3 <free space> Then i'll install the OS, upgrade the kernel to the CentOSPlus kernel, install reiserfs-utils, format the free space as resierfs and mount it as /home. This is an older server so I'm trying to suck as much out of it before forcing the company to upgrade. I figure a shiny new 2.6 kernel and reiserfs should buy me some more time. Thoughts? I think I solved the problem. ACPI was disabled in the bios. I had to run kudzu manually once the system came up, but it removed all the other stuff and added the new. All is well (again) ... Sam -- Snowman

Boot problems

My dead S-M motherboard is not so dead. Short between the seat and keyboard :-) I'm running into some problems booting up tho. When kudzu runs, it finds all the stuff from the Tyan board that the super micro board does not have. I've told it to remove the configurations for all those things, but kudzu never goes into the probing for new devices after removing, but halts or hangs at "enabling swap space". Nothing happens after that. Prior to all this tho, in the boot screen I see the message that ACPI cannot find the RSDP ?? whatever that is. Ok.. this time I didn't do anything, but just let it progress into the bootup, and it continues and completes, gives me a login, etc., like everything is OK. What should I do to get kudzu to remove all the stuff that is not there now, and find the new hardware? Thanks much.... Sam -- Snowman

I searched the repositories and wasn't sure exactly which packages ought to be installed to make this work properly. The systems are CentOS 4 w/Gnome. List, Being pretty new to CentOS and such, can someone answer a couple of questions about yum and up2date? I think I got the basic info, but I'm a bit confused about what does what. I configured yum to use the dag repo (I think) but now and then, I get the red circle from up2date stuff on the upper menubar. I have been using the up2date function to grab the latest bits when indicated something is available. I don't have yum running nightly as a cron job either. Now, what is the difference in using the up2date vs. yum? Should I be using yum exclusively to do updates, and if so, how does it know there are updates available? Are the files coming from the RH update site the same as would be avaliable via yum? Sorry if this is a newbie question, but while the machine is down waiting on the new mobo, I figured I could do a little brushing up on things I don't fully understand. Thanks.. -- Snowman

cyclades driver on centos 4.1

I have a 5 year old machine that had a working cyclades8ys (8 port ISA rs232) card. I installed centos 4.1 on the box. I installed the kernel source and rebuilt the the kernel, did menuconfig and seelcted the cyclades module. Did the modprode cyclades and got some driver information echoed to the screen but it did not detect the card. Does udev have anything to do with this? Does any one have an old ISA cyclades card working on centos 4.1? Can you share how? Thanks, jerry

2 httpd configs

I normally don't do this - haven't got any traction on taroon list and I want to get a backup going. I have an RHEL 3 server and it is serving some simple web stuff (horde/imp/etc.) I have installed BrightStor ArcServe and I need it to also serve some web pages. The ArcServe runs on a different port but has it's own httpd.conf with the distribution. The last time I did it, it was the only web pages I needed to serve on the system so it was easy enough to just replace the default /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf with the supplied httpd.conf from ArcServe This time, I can't do that so I guess that I want to run another instance of httpd, with the alternate httpd.conf file which I can do by copying /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd and altering the copy to use the ArcServe config file. intel dual core processors and new kernel packages

I've just got bunch of RHEL4 erratas (looks like U2 is out). Looking at the kernel errata (kernel-2.6.9-22.EL), one of the things in list of new features is "Intel dual core support". What does this exactly means? Does it mean if I have dual core pentium processor and use older kernel that it will use only one core, and I need newer kernel to use both cores? Or is it only something cosmetical (like updated output for /proc/cpuinfo)? Looking at the bug 167412, it looks more like the later. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has attempted to compile the tarballs for kde 3.5 beta 1 yet. I started mucking about with them on my CentOS 4.1 box, but none of them want to compile. They'll configure ok, but when I run the make command I just get a lot of errors. what I'd like to do is compile and install them in /opt so that I could run this version to test it without distrupting my current installation of KDE. dependency conflict on vixie-cron update

I'm having a problem with the new vixie-cron rpm for CentOS 4.1 when updating via yum. It complains with the message: Error: Missing Dependency: pam >= 0.77-66.8 is needed by package vixie-cron I got this error from calling 'yum update' on a clean install from the 4.1 isos. This version of pam is available in the 4.2 beta repository, but not the 4.1 repository. Did something from 4.2 sneak into the 4.1 updates?

In an effort to discover some of the details in /etc/shadow, I have downloaded and rebuilt the SRPM. It seems to be missing a dependency of gcc-c++. After installing that, the build went fine. Also, does anyone have a pointer to detailed information about /etc/shadow? The man page is many years out of date and is now a bit incorrect. It's just in case somene should rely on this distribution on real iron as i am not able to verify/support this scenario. New GNOME items not displayed automatically

Hello List, It seems whenever I try to download something via Firefox (which is saved by default to the GNOME desktop), I would still need to press Ctrl-R (Refresh) to make the new item show up. Anybody here know why this is so? Is there any tweak that I can do to make new items display automatically? Any help would be apprecidated. Disappearing mouse on CentOS 4.1

For the second time in two days, my mouse just "disappeared" from my desktop system running CentOS 4.1 (yes, I'm using CentOS as a workstation). At the time, I was trying to open the main Gnome menu from the panel, and I think my hand slipped before I released the mouse button. I tried accessing an alternate console (Ctrl-Alt-1) and then coming back to the X11 desktop (Alt-F7) but that didn't fix the problem. Alt-Tab wouldn't cycle through windows, and when I tried to do a xkill from the active xterm window, I got a "Can't grab the mouse" error. I killed the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and logged back in, and everything is back to normal. Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions on how to debug this next time it happens? To be fair, I should tell you that I am using Synergy (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net) to share the mouse and keyboard of the CentOS system with two other systems (my CentOS box is the Synergy server). I've been using Synergy for a long time, and CentOS almost as long, and have never had this problem until this week. My last yum update was on 9/17 and it did update the xorg-x11 packages. I wonder if this is a bug in the latest release... Alfred

All, I am installing centos 4.1 on dell precision 380 with RAID on the motherboard. I have setup the disks as RAID and when I get to the manual partition page I see both disks??? ant RPM for CentOS 4

Attempting to build OpenOffice 2 on CentOS 4 from rawhide (future FC5) SRPM. The spec file has EL4 target (which is nice), and I got almost all dependencies in place (mostly from 4.2beta and some from rawhide). However, I'm missing the ant package. Ant from rawhide doesn't compile since it is already gcc 4 based (fails on dependencies, getting it to use gcc4 instead of gcc seems like nice piece of work, but I might be wrong, I might need to do it after all). Similar story with FC4 ant SRPM. CentOS doesn't have ant RPM at all. FC3 (which is the closest match to EL4/CentOS4) doesn't have it either. Problems with Additional IP's, Sendmail, and iptables?

Hello CentOS, Setup: CentOS 4.1 (Latest YUM) Sendmail Multiple IP's on eth0:x (1 through 150 or so) iptables I've noticed that whenever I add another IP address to my servers on one of the eth0:x aliases, the IP comes up fine and restarting pure-ftpd and apache seems to be able to use the IP straight away. Sendmail also 'seems' to use it fine, but something odd is occuring that I have been able to track down. When adding the IP, any domains pointing to the IP are added to the local-host-names file, their email aliases are all configured, and sendmail is restarted. The problem is, none of the aliases ever work unless I actually reboot the entire machine. I've tried restarting as many of the running daemons as I can, I'm either looking in the wrong places, or there's no other choice?
